- Alma (10/5): Great experience - Very quiet really enjoy to be here None
- Kristin (8/5): -
- Lalitha (10/5): - Beautiful and quiet location within easy walking distance to the main square
- Stephanie (10/5): Hidden gem. Beautiful hacienda. - On the edge of town, so very tranquil and quiet. Best sleep webhave had in Mexico. Charming room with a two story turret Sent a message that was never responded to. Driveway is very narrow and very steep.
- Paolo Renzo (9/5): Relax and staff very helpful! - Relax atmosphere Property in a slope that makes it difficult parking
- Soledad (10/5): Peaceful stay, exceptional service and delicious food. - Hacienda Caudillos is set on the side of a mountain. It’s absolutely pristine. Beautiful views out of the dining area. Wonderful service. This was our first family visit and we hope to make it a regular vacation destination. If you are looking for peace and tranquility, this is the place for you.
- Jeremy (10/5): Exceptional - This hacienda is so cool. We rented two rooms for our family of four. The rooms and other facilities were beautiful, comfortable, and historic. The staff treated us like royalty. And San Sebastien del Oeste is a really neat town.
- Gregory (10/5): Serenity in the forest at San Sebastian del Oeste. - The hotel is so pleasant, made even better by the friendliness and service orientation of the staff.
Isobel was amazing in her can-do attitude, and even provided early morning boxed breakfast service, suitable for birder's hours.
Speaking of birds, the property is surrounded by native pine-oak woodland, replete with seasonal flowering plants. Bird song soothes from the forest while drinking a glass of wine on the outdoor verandah next to the restaurant.
We will be back. Parking is a bit cramped and limited... though this is workable... and most of the time there aren't that many vehicles anyway.
- Kristin (6/5): Pleasant - Beautiful place and location. Staff was very friendly and helpful Hot tub was not operational until the day we were leaving and there was no operational restaurant or room service even though it's advertised that these amenities were there. There was also no water for showers or flushing toilets one morning.
- Alfredo (10/5): Exceptional - The place is absolutely beautiful with well appointed rooms. You're totally transported to the luxurious Haciendas.
- Robert (9/5): Superb -
- Gregory (9/5): Comfort in the mountains, surrounded by beautiful nature and singing birds. - Location. Lunch and dinner not served regularly.
- Susan (10/5): Exceptional - This is an amazing, unique property. We loved our stay and will be back
- Diana (7/5): Greata for a quick overnight to San Sebastian. - It was nice to have coffee and cookies. We declined breakfast.
The facility was very nice and interesting. a couple of friendly cats.
Loved the fireplace. Staff was very nice and helpful. No internet or phone service. Location was too far from town. You could not walk
it. you would need a car.
- Eyal (7/5): Good - Staff was really nice and helpful. The Jacuzzi is cold.
- Lars (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful place with gas fireplace inside the room.
- Jeff (9/5): Easy going and accommodating staff, much nicer than the other hotel in town - Spacious Way more mosquitos than the other hotel in town
- Alberto (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mike (8/5): Very good - We liked our host Isabella room was excellent. We recommend this property
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kelly (8/5): Great Experience - The king room was beautiful. Enjoyed the fireplace. The setting is gorgeous...surrounded by nature. It's a bit of a trek to the center of the pueblo, but an enjoyable one. Bed was comfy and the room was quiet. Had to ask for hair drier and hand towels. At this price point, they should be in room. Had trouble with cable TV...out more than in.
- Bonner (9/5): Superb - Nice room, very big, great bed and amenities. Staff was very helpful. Breakfast was very good. Some of window screens were damaged and not keeping the mosquitos and bugs out. With no AC, it was too hot to keep windows closed so had bugs in room. The hot tub wasn't working.
- Kimberley (10/5): Charming Step Back in Time - Beautiful; Tranquil; Charming No restaurant open and no room service available
- Peggy (7/5): Not bad but pricey for what was offered in area - It was a little expensive for the area as we have visited other hotels on various occasion less pricey…room lovely but no services such as refrigerator, bar, breakfast not included in a bed & breakfast over $220 USD? 2 towels only-no hand towels -but property was nice. See above
- Reginald (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent property The Jacuzzi was not working and the restaurant was closed
- Eric (9/5): we liked our suite , different , clean , confortable - Hacienda caracter , very nice
- Tim (10/5): Exceptional - Fabulous host and pristine property.
- Andrew (9/5): Great stay, would recommend to others. - Alejandro was a lovely host, readily available upon our arrival and attentive throughout our stay. The property is beautiful, calm, quiet and peaceful; exactly what we were seeking during our short visit to San Sebastian del Oueste. A fridge in the room would have been a nice addition.
- Colleen (10/5): Can’t wait to return - Beautiful setting, comfortable accommodations, and efficient friendly staff
- Jeannette (10/5): Absolutely relaxing and comfortable. - The location was gorgeous. The rooms were comfortable and cozy. The staff was friendly and kind. The hot tub was wonderful.
- Richard (7/5): Nice place, but could be better. - The old world charm.
Nice rooms and bathrooms
The staff The whirlpool in the center of the courtyard either never got turned on or didn’t work.
No coffee available before breakfast at 9.
I understand it is unusual but very loud young children were there for one of the nights. Thick wooden doors but they didn’t keep the sound out.
Supposedly had Netflix but couldn’t bring it up on the tv in the room.
- William (7/5): Nice Place, but Nothing to Rave About - Charming restored hacienda. Quiet. Not an easy hotel to get to. Very steep, narrow and cobbled driveway. Parking is difficult. Jets in spa weren’t working.
- Roger (6/5): Unpleasant stay . - Location is ok and away from crowds They advertised themselves as five stars but I don’t think they are. No coffee machine in the room to make your own coffee. Second night the bathroom light bulb burned out and the front desk guy tried to change the bulb with no success , so he only said, it’s broken and I cannot remove the light cover. So we did not have light in the bathroom the last night from 7pm. So using the toilet and taking a shower in the dark was not fun at all.
- Loretta (8/5): Great option for a weekend getaway at the mountain! 🤍 - The haciendas is a nice space, the room es cool and the views are pretty a very natural. It has a jacuzzi that makes a nice experience. The locations is conviniente since it's a the entrance of the town but the views are super green a the woods surround the property The jacuzzi wasn't that hot and the second day it wasn't hot at all!!! The service for food it's only for breakfast and since the team it's little it take a loooong time to get your food. The team at the hotel is very nice and the service they give you is the best they can do, that's for sure. And just one element... I get that the classic vibe of an Hacienda involves so many elements, but just outside my room there was a "Confesionario with a priest" and that was a bit freaky!
I mean in 2024 we should keep spaces religion free in my opinion.
- Polly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Keith (10/5): Exceptional - Very cool property, excellent breakfast
- Clint (7/5): Good -
- Katie (8/5): Very good - Comfortable beds, excellent staff, beautiful rooms and location We were there in low season so we were the only guests for our one night stay. The hot water in the shower was not turned on in advance and the coffee and breakfast were not ready at 8:00am as advertised. Both problems were remedied by the staff.
- Stephen (10/5): A great experience in a beautiful location, we will return - Great location...away from some of the noise in town, excellent service, friendly staff, nice facilities, comfortable bed. We will return. No complaints.
- Gerald (9/5): Superb -
- Lynette (6/5): Beautiful hotel, but pricey! - Beautiful surroundings, furnishings, comfortable rooms, hot showers No coffee facilities in room or by reception, breakfast only from 9am, no hair dryer in room, quite expensive for what you get.
- Melissa (4/5): While beautiful, I would not return to this hotel. - The setting was lovely and peaceful. It is well maintained. The hot tub was lukewarm making it unusable. There was no coffee available in the morning unless you were there for breakfast. The size of the water bottles was quite small given that the water from the tap is not potable. Also, most places we have used at this price point include a breakfast at no charge.
- James (4/5): No luxury at this disappointing luxury hotel - The hotel promotes itself as luxury and the rate for this town is a luxury rate. However, there was nothing to luxuriate in here and the overall stay was disappointing. No assistance with luggage was offered upon arrival or after check-in. San Sebastian is a mountain town, so it's cold at night. The hotel is new (built 2017), but was designed and built with no heat. The only source of heat is a gas fireplace that has to be manually started each time by the staff (but the fireplaces are not vented so one has to leave a window open while using it, and turn it off while sleeping--scary). No extra blankets were available from the staff.
The room key is a large, iron skeletal key the size of a kitten, and one has to carry it with them if they plan to return to the hotel after 10 pm since the front desk is not staffed. We returned before 10 pm and nobody was at the desk to give us our key, but luckily we found someone in the restaurant.
Our toilet malfunctioned twice during our one night stay and had to be fixed by the staff.
The rooms do not have a hair dryer nor do they offer laundry service. There is one bar of soap both for sink and shower, shampoo, but no conditioner. We wanted to take advantage of the large hot tub in the courtyard, but the owner said it was working but wasn't heated because the gas was broken. To me, that means it isn't working. I decided not to enjoy a cold soak in a non-hot hot tub. Breakfast was good, but not included with the room price.
- Sean (10/5): Beautiful room & romantic fireplace. Peaceful & quiet location. Chef Daniel incredible!. - Exceptional. All made even better by the incredible Chef Daniel. The food was amazing.
- Joshua (9/5): Superb -
- Anahi (10/5): The perfect getaway - Beautiful facilities.
Quiet & cozy. Amazing staff and delicious food Everything was fine
- Merle (10/5): Beautiful, unique hotel. We loved our stay! - Great service, beautiful, clean, comfortable room. Unique furnishings, and delicious breakfast. Very quiet. Highly recommended!
- Frank (8/5): Very good - Beautiful hacienda in great location. Not far from town center.
Very spacious rooms with a super king bed
Great food! Very nice chef!
The atmosphere is very quiet and relaxed The hacienda needs some repairs. The food is a little expensive.
- Rodrigo (9/5): Superb -
- Carmen (10/5): The hotel is beautiful, great rooms, quiet and next to nature. The food was fantastic! - It’s very pretty, great location, super quiet and the food was fantastic.
- Alessandro (10/5): - Great service
- Mark (8/5): - The property upkeep by owners is not good especially for $200USD a night. Way overpriced but the manager was outstanding as were their breakfast.
- James (10/5): - What a hidden gem! We were looking for a fun escape from Puerto Vallarta and our “staycation” was perfect. The town is old Mexico, quaint, friendly and magical. The Hacienda was beautiful and everyone went out of their way to make us feel like honored guests. Very comfortable accommodations, remember that your in the mountains and it is much cooler up there. We grabbed shawls on our way out of the house (in PV) and they were perfect for sitting out on the patio for dinner. The food was excellent, the mushroom soup with rustic bread for dinner and the chorizo omelette for breakfast was just perfect. I will be back often.
- Mary (6/5): - This is a beautiful hotel, in a historic hacienda. Our room was not only comfortable, but elegant. We enjoyed the large hot tub in the central courtyard.
Dinner was good; breakfast was excellent. The staff was helpful and friendly.
BUT - we had MAJOR issues trying to pay at this hotel. They claimed to accept credit cards, but nothing worked. We talked to a couple who had stayed there the night before, and they encountered the same problem. The manager insisted there wasn't a problem, which we found very irritating, and in the end we had to go into town to get money from the ATM. The whole thing left us feeling sour, and we will not return to this hotel.
By all means stay here - it's very nice - but bring plenty of cash.
By the way, the wifi ONLY works in the office. Not a big deal for us, since we were vacationing, but it would be a mistake to rely on it.
Ampliamente recomendado.
- Paja (10/5): Full of charm - What a gem this place was, just beautiful and charming. Super clean although it was obviously historic. If we make it back to the area will definitely stay again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Like a museum. - Very difficult to reach when wet due to steep cobblestone road. Very peaceful and relaxing place. Very many nice antiques.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - There was no heat in the room and the temperature lowers to the 5o’s at night. Our rate was higher that quoted on Orbitz. We didn’t need our second room booked, tried many times to call ahead before arriving but no phone numbers quoijted to this hotel worked. Then took both rooms as we had originally ordered.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Poor unfriendly management - I have to say the place is amazingly beautiful! The location is perfect and the views are absolutely stunning!
The reason for the low rating is entirely based on the very unfriendly manager and poor welcome we received!
2 couples traveling together. Doing the correspondence with the place they seemed so friendly and accommodating and they wanted to make an exception so we could bring our 2 small dogs which we much appreciated! Doing arrival the tone was very different! The manager was standing outside and without even saying welcome he immediately ordered us not to let the dogs walk on the premises! We would have to carry them to the rooms and put them in cages!?! We were not told to bring cages so we didn’t have any! So the dogs were then to stay in the rooms. At check in it turned out our friends had made a mistake when booking their room the night before and booked it for same evening instead of next day! So when my friend told her name and her reservation number the manager pretended he didn’t have anything under that name or number even though her reservation was the first paper on his desk so I pointed to it and said but it right there in front of you!?! He said yes but that was for yesterday! Clearly that was my friends mistake she had booked it late in the evening for same night instead of next day! The manager wouldn’t help her out at all even though there was no other reservation for the room she had to pay full price again. He was unfriendly throughout our stay
- Amanda (10/5): Homey for royalty - Really beautiful, felt homey for royalty
- Verified traveler (10/5): perfect little town experience - Great stay
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice property.
We had a great view of the valley below.
Also, You must have Cash as they do not have a credit card machine.!!!!
- R&J (8/5): - The property boasts an eclectic vibe with antiques, replica's and oddities throughout the property. Our room was large, clean and included a turret room, fireplace and piano! We assumed the bottle of wine was complimentary, but cannot be certain as we didn't partake. The manager was very friendly and the better than most continental breakfast was a great way to start the day. We would definitely stay there again!
- Kenneth (10/5): Fit for a king (or queen) - The staff made us feel very special. San Sebastian is an incredible place to visit and Hacienda Matel was the icing on the cake. I reccomend that you stay here.
- Laurence (10/5): Great stay !! - Great stay, quiet place and beautiful..close to town , but a bit of a hill to get to downtown , if one doesn't mind walking ,this is great..fabulous restaurant close by too .Vila el nogal..not to be missed !! The employees at hotel hacienda Matel were all very nice and helpfull .san sebastian is a beautiful ,quiet little town, with plenty of nice streets and a nice plaza to walk around. With nice little cafes and restaurants...we really enjoyed our stay there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place to stay. The staff is very kind and they will make everything to make your stay memorable.
Only down point would be the short and tiny breakfast they offer.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good place to relax and get away from the Heat of the coast
- Gary (10/5): Outstanding!!! - Amazing property. It is like staying in a Museum of local antiquities.
Fun place to stay.
Highly recommended
- Martha (10/5): Great place to stay at - Our stay at Hacienda Matel was AMAZING. The place itself is beautiful. Extremely clean. The manager Francisco has a great customer service. Very helpful and very well informed on the history of San Sebastián. I would totally recommend this place to anyone. We left the hotel with a smile in our face since, hoping to be back soo
