Definitely one of our favourites on our trip. The service and friendliness of the staff were second to none. The breakfasts were delicious and the afternoon tea an added treat. The location was perfect for exploring GalIe Fort. I would definitely recommend!

Very comfortable bed, superb shower, room spotlessly clean and when we arrived they had the A/C on and a wax melt burning in the room which smelt wonderful. Great view from the balcony and roof terrace over the fort wall to the sea. Perfect to watch the sunset. Really lovely and friendly staff, we will definitely come back as this is 5* accommodation with character.

The breakfast was healthy and generous. Beds were comfortable and room was cool and clean. Sunset view from rooftop was amazing.

The location of the hotel within the walls of the city is outstanding, it allows you to be in the city at the start and end of the the day and see the citizens going about their everyday life. The staff are outstanding, breakfast is excellent and personal touches like a birthday cake for my wife and the manager lending a book on the city to read made the stay my favorite in Sri Lanka. It is a fabulous experience to stay in the Bartizan

- potatogirl2018 (10/5): Small charming hotel, next to the ocean; highly recommend - We stayed for two nights in July 2025 and LOVED this charming hotel. It has about 10 rooms and it's an old, restored building with a lot of charm. The checkin process was easy, and the entire time we were there, the staff was always attentive and asking if everything was okay. They were all very warm and kind to us. The staff helped us with recommendations for things to do, etc. The room we booked was large enough for a family of four, which is not easy in Sri Lanka to find. (I don't why but it's not easy to find a hotel for four people/two queen beds). Anyways, I was very happy to find this hotel, and were very comfortable. There was a fridge, tea/coffee, bottled water, air conditioning, free wifi, etc. I noted there was no TV in our room, but I really didn't mind. We had a balcony and could hear and see the ocean. The view was not a full view, as there was some obstruction, but I still enjoyed the view and location so much. The breakfast was really nice: fresh fruit, toast, eggs, juice, coffee, etc. They even had an option to select kiri bath, which is one of my favorites! I really want to say thank you for all the attention and kindness the staff showed us during our time here.

- Jacinta (10/5): - The Bartizan's rooms were spacious and clean. The bathroom was gorgeous. The breakfast was generous, and we were given a packed breakfast on the day we left early. The staff were very attentive. It is located on the coast and walkable to loads of shops and restaurants. It was our favourite hotel in the two weeks we spent in Sri Lanka.

Andrew is a gracious host who takes time to get to know his guests ensuring their stay is comfortable and perfect . The friendly team are efficient and extremely helpful. The rooftop is perfect for watching sunsets, delicious breakfast are served in the courtyard or balcony if you’re in an up stairs room. Spotlessly clean, thoughtful design cannot find fault. The staff, the warm hospitality, they were like family!! Excellent location, rooms, breakfast - everything is excellent. From the time of arrival we were greeted by staff and security guard Ranjith, to our departure, we were waited on every moment. We couldn't have asked for more! Big thank you to - GM Andrew Milhuisen, Thank you for all you did during our stay, really appreciate it!
- Trenton (8/5): Want something different? Check the Bartizan - The hotel has character and can't beat the location within the Fort. The room we had is West facing, so great sunset from the room and the rooftop area, but conversely the rooms get hot and the a/c in the room (we had Family Suite, 1 Bedroom, Ocean View, Oceanfront) just didn't seem to do the job. The hotel is expensive given the facilities are limited. Staff are welcoming supportive and friendly. We did end up taking our own suitcases downstairs when we left. Would recommend if it fits in your budget, but maybe just 1-2 nights if you are a family looking for more comfort on an extended stay.

Thus, I came to you again and will again and again every time I visit Srilanka. If anyone wants to experience peak colonial era energy and vibes they must take refuge within your warm embrace in the avatar of your amazing hospitality, smiling staffs and most importantly the love that exudes from each of the stay . It is truly magical how you take one back to a different time. Each nook and cranny whispers a story of its own. In the bustling heart of the Peddler’s street you are a coveted space that gave so much peace to a hustler like me who earns your presence in difficult days. - 506thilinar (10/5): nice place to stay in galle fort - Right from the start, the staff was really friendly specially the security uncle at the door and they did everything to make the stay a memorable one, breakfast provided was really good. Some may find the room a bit small but we really liked it and enjoyed our stay at bartizan.

Small rooms , very well appointed and restored to perfection, Really helpful staff with overall great service. Extensive large breakfast. You really get the feeling of being in a special historic place -highly recommended.

We were upgraded to a large room with a terrace and a sea view which was appreciated.The room was extremely comfortable with a complimentary mini bar. We loved the roof terrace with its great view over the fort and the sea. Although there is no pool, a small, safe beach is just steps away with beach towels provided by the hotel.
- Serra (10/5): Old Charm - I loved this hotel. It was old with lots of charm and located just across the street from the fort wall. It was next to Pedler Street with great shopping. Breakfast was really good with an amazing array of fruit. Overall, this is a great hotel.
- Sophia (8/5): - The Bartizan is a really nice hotel with a great view over the ocean. I had the tower room which was small and gorgeous. However, it was not perfectly clean (the fan was super dusty, my bedsheets did not smell very fresh), plus the water pressure in the shower was super low and the water cold. Breakfast was really good and was served in the courtyard - or on the terrace upon request (only advisable in early morning hours, otherwise it will be too hot).
- jandaniel99 (10/5): An original boutique hotel in a beautiful location - We spent five nights at The Bartizan in February and really enjoyed our stay there. The location is perfect for exploring the vast fort and the lanes within it. From the moment we arrived, Andrew the manager welcomed us and showed us to our room. He was helpful and gracious throughout our visit, always checking if we needed anything. Our room was a quirky one at the top of a spiral staircase with a fabulous outside space, and even more fabulous views. The bed was very comfortable and the shower great with complimentary toiletries, not to mention a view of the lighthouse. Breakfast was perfect and plentiful, a fruit plate, toast and bread rolls and a cooked choice as well. They even catered specially for my fussy choices! We had such an enjoyable stay, we didn’t want to leave, so thank you Andrew and all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing stay, highly recommend! - I've just returned from a two night stay at the Bartizan and it was nothing short of splendid! The only downside was that stay was too short. My room was stunning and incredibly spacious. It had a very comfortable bed, cold AC, a beautiful balcony with dining table and comfortable chairs to sit and watch the sea. Breakfast could be delivered to the room or you could dine in the private courtyard downstairs. You choose daily from several options/styles. The two I tried were both delicious and quite a big meal. The hotel has been beautifully renovated and the staff were exceedingly kind, friendly and accommodating. They really went out of their way to help me have a wonderful stay and really contributed to my experience visiting Southern Sri Lanka. It is a boutique hotel, privately owned and in a historic building, so if this isn't your thing and you are looking for something more bland and more like a big standardized US chain then this might not be for you, but if you are drawn to Galle because of the history, the beauty of the architecture and the sea then I highly recommend.
- KIRSTY (10/5): - The hotel was really beautiful and our room incredibly spacious and well appointed with a fabulous balcony with views out to sea. It is located in the heart of Galle Fort with easy access to all points of the fort and to a couple of beaches. The breakfasts were delicious and the staff could not have been more accommodating helping us to arrange a cooking class and arranging a visit from a barber. We had a really excellent time.

- summertime2010London (10/5): Outstanding Boutique Hotel within the Fort - The Bartizan is a beautifully converted and decorated small hotel within the confines of Galle Fort. Our room was spacious with an extremely comfortable bed. We also had our own private balcony with a view of the sea. The staff are fantastic- welcoming, friendly and committed to ensuring that their guests enjoy their stay. Highly recommended!
- TheteamGuildford (2/5): Disappointing - This was probably not the best choice of hotel for us. We expected a "modern, stylish hotel" as advertised on their website. Instead, our small courtyard room was as per the attached photos - walls had been polyfillered but not sanded or over-painted; the under sink cupboard was full of dirty old used water bottles. Perhaps the cracked concrete walls and floor are part of the charm but it was lost on us. We re-located to another hotel.

- firozu2018 (8/5): A lovely setting for a 2-night stay. - My room was the superior balcony room with a partial sea view. Firstly, all the hotels within the city walls have a certain configuration so you may not have the usual benefits of other hotels. Nonetheless, our stay at the Bartizan was a relaxing one. Although we had a partial view of the sea, the view was still nice to have and hearing the waves at night was very smoothing for me personally. The room was spacious enough for 2 people. It is very dimly lit and no TV is within the room. No lifts as well but I believe the other hotels within walls have the same layout. Coffee and tea were complimentary alongside the items inside the mini-bar, which was helpful in terms of not having to always buy water. Our room had a AC unit and an overhead fan. There was an option to have breakfast on our balcony, which we took and proved to be very convenient. The staff very quickly cleaned up once we gave them a call. The staff were always very friendly and courteous, even offering us an umbrella to shade us from the fierce heat. They helped us check in smoothly and were accommodating to our needs. Andrew (who I believe was the hotel manager) always greeted us whenever we entered or left the hotel alongside the other staff members. Located really close to the sea, all the main sites and restaurants are easily reachable from the hotel. A section of the Galle walls is right outside the hotel, so you can start your walk of them straight away. I had a lovely stay in Galle and would recommend the hotel if you are staying for a short period, or even using it as a base to cover other sites close by.
- Helen (10/5): - Bartizan is locted on edge of Galle Fort. It has a rooftop with seating which has great sea views and more importantly a breeze in the swealtering heat! Breakfast amazing, with nice choices, staff supet freindly and very polite. Well worth booking a room with seaview or partial seaview rather than courtyard room ( although these are fine). Would recommend this hotel.
- 233Sharon (10/5): The perfect place to stay in Galle. - Beautiful building and rooms. We had a large double with balcony facing the sea which was huge and fabulous. The beds are extremely comfortable. The shower was great. Our daughter had the North Tower room with rooftop terrace. The room is small but the roof terrace offers uninterrupted views of the ocean. Breakfast was delicious. The staff were very friendly, helpful and cheerful.

Staff lovely and friendly, included breakfast was great with fruit, juice, yoghurt and also hot with sausages, bacon etc. Can have delivered privately to your balcony or in courtyard. Easy access into Galle to walk around. Lots to explore and so much character. Great spot
- olafr649 (10/5): Sleep in a hystorical building with charme and a perfect service - It is a particular Boutique Hotel and when you book don’t expect the features of a 5 star hotel, but you can be sure to have a 5 star service. The rooms are inside a hystorical building and therefore peculiar with a kind a charme you don’t find in luxury hotels. The manager Andrew and his staff are offering a very warm support in all our needs, which made us feel better than home.
- 134chantellek (8/5): Little treasure in the fort - Well designed, perfectly clean and comfortable room. We had the courtyard room and while it’s not the biggest room, it has everything you need. The only negative was that it didn’t have a window, but the air conditioner and fan help keep the room comfortable on hot Galle summer afternoons. Would definitely recommend staying here.

We were lucky enough to have the top floor room from where we enjoyed the view. We were also served our delicious breakfast there. The room was large with a well stocked complementary selection of drinks & toiletries, and a nice sitting area.

Very comfortable bed & pillows , spotless & comfortable , European 5 star standard the room even a hair dryer ! hand towels for taking off make up , nice touches like a full mini fridge with refreshments & treats . I feel we paid a fair price for the level of luxury of this hotel , many many others of this standard are a lot more expensive!! The breakfast was very good ,staff go over & above at all times . Andrew the GM is a very professional & kind person. Arranging tuk tuks & tours. If you’re planning a trip to Galle fort ,this is your hotel.
- enda111 (10/5): Our Favourite Hotel In Sri Lanka - We loved our stay at The Bartizan Hotel, Galle Fort. Andrew, the manager is brilliant. We stayed three nights and because we were staying in a small room we got upgraded on our last night. Unlike alot of hotels in Sri Lanka, everything in the room works! Sockets, good shower, fridge stocked with free drinks etc and air-con that does not wake you up!! Great breakfast, lovely staff and restaurant recommendations as well as advice on shops, tuc tuc etc. We were overcharged in a shop in Galle and Andrew and staff went back to the shop with my wife to renegotiate the price!! That is the level of service at the Bartizan. We would love to stay again and without reservations I would highly recommend. 😎

Conveniently located within the ramparts of the Galle Fort, its super comfortable, with luxury shower products and impeccable service. Loved the breakfast!! Taking very good care of it is Andrew the general manager , who is extremely helpful and genial along with his very capable n friendly staff ! - Shelley (8/5): - This property was wonderful so why only 4 stars? Although I think it should be 5 stars, one consistent item knocked it down a notch. For this calibre of hotel, daily room make up service is a must. The fact that I was asked each day if I wanted this, to which my response was yes, and then to return to the untouched room at the end of the afternoon isn’t 5 star service. Stayed 3 nights and each day this happened, so would have to request it again. With that said, I loved the room, property itself, and the cordial staff. Breakfast was exceptional, the place is spotless and location is excellent. Even with the room makeup misses, I would stay here again in a flash and recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in the fort.

- Verified traveler (2/5): Terrible Experience with Staff and Owner - This hotel left a terrible taste in my partner and I’d mouths. My partner acquired covid and they refused to give us a refund which is extremely distasteful no matter which way you look at it. The staff lacked empathy for our situation and kept telling us “don’t worry” when we were scrambling trying to figure out what to do. From what I could see their staff had no experience dealing with someone who is ill, and could not provide straight answers to what we should do. The owner is apparently a doctor, therefore you’d expect an above and beyond understanding of our circumstance but sadly we got the complete opposite. I rarely review places negatively and choose to give them the benefit of the doubt, but this hotel is a sad disgrace for a ‘hospitable’ place. On another note they are currently doing renovations which were very loud, cleanliness was not up to par and the property has definitely dated from the pictures.

- Verified traveler (8/5): Pleasant Stay - This boutique hotel is situated right in the centre of Galle- with the rooftop area overlooking the fort and walking distance to plenty of restaurants, gelato and massage places. The hotel is a short drive from Unawatuna- a beach town with a calm sea. We stayed here for two nights and had a packed breakfast (sandwich and fruit) one morning and the usual breakfast on our second day- not bad- the usual eggs, pancakes, tea/ coffee, fruit. The rooms are a reasonable size, but dark due to 'the bartizan' nature of the hotel - shutters. We found it perfect for what we needed and the wifi is fast. The roof area is really nice for afternoon tea/ reading (and they offer free tea and cake between 3-5pm). Overall we were really happy with our stay. Only small niggle was there are no shower facilities after check out (11am which they kindly extended until 12pm) which meant we couldn't do much on our last day and were just hanging about the area. Also we were told they were full so couldn't offer another room to shower (which we would have gladly paid to use), but I later found out there was actually a room available.

- Tinman (8/5): - Difficult to review this really unusual hotel. Great location, lovely feel. Particularly liked the courtyard and roof terrace. Our room was small and without a window, which isn't great for me. Storage was poor,we were really living out of the suitcases. Bathroom privacy may be an issue - as only a partition glass screen between bedroom and bathroom (in our room, don't know about other rooms). We stayed for three nights which is probably the most one would wish to do. Breakfast good, but quantities for us too large. We scaled down for second morning, but witnessed a lot of wasted food on places which is a pity in this essential poor country. I would recommend.

Location was superb, right by the ramparts and directly off strategic pedlar st. Bartizan is a small boutique hotel with all the requisite facilities and amenities. rooms are well appointed and equipped, nice touches like designer toileteries. cosy and intimate rooftop lounge area for amazing sunsets over the indian ocean. Service was discreet and attentive. good bespoke breakfast served in the quaint and cool courtyard or outside your room. Special credit goes to Andrew, the GM, who is extremely personable, approachable, informative, warm and down to earth. overall one of the best price-value-quality boutique options in the Fort. would certainly return and make this my base
- Shilpa (10/5): Incredible boutique comfort in the heart of Galle - The Bartizan is without a doubt one of the best hotels there is. Literally everything was exception - spacious room and terrace design, beautiful decor, kind and super attentive staff, excellent breakfasts, and little details like afternoon tea. As someone who travels frequently for work (and lives out of hotels), I was blown away by how phenomenal the Bartizan is and would love to make it my home away from home. It’s a must in Galle.

- CMH (6/5): Experienced a black out in the middle of the night - Experienced a black out in the middle of the night. The staffs were not trained to deal with the situation, I had to call the front desk a couple of times as the room was stuffy and hot. Eventually, I opened all the windows and the door leading to the balcony, which invited additional security risks. The constant howling of the wind and waves made it an unbearable night, loosely held pipes and unsecured doors added to the orchestra of polluting noises.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a safe, wifi and a proper bathroom door

Erhalten haben wir ein Zimmer mit geschätzt 6 qm, die Klimaanlage war so verdreckt, dass keine Luft mehr passieren konnte und folglich keine Kühlung stattfand, das Doppelbett hatte eine Breite von 130cm, folglich haben wir kaum geschlafen. In der Toilette und der Dusche konnte man sich wegen der Beengtheit fast nicht umdrehen um wir beide sind schon extrem schlank. Es gab keinen Fernseher, das hat uns aber auch nicht gefehlt. Das europäische Frühstück war hervorragend. Der Service war nett. Das Gesamtpaket stimmt nicht.

- Paul (10/5): Great Hotel - Great location and a lovely hotel. The rooms were a little bit different in the way that they are set up, but different in a good way. We stayed in the top room with a panoramic view and a balcony that has a sea view, were you can sit in the evening and watch the sunset. Service and staff were excellent. The hotel is in a great location in Galle Fort Area, with great little shops and wonderful cafes and restaurants. If I had one small comment is that you are expected to let the hotel know what time you want breakfast in the morning, I felt a little under pressure to make the stated time, but that's just me! We loved our stay and we will visit again soon.
