- Susan (8/5): Convenient place to stay to explore Kirkcudbright - Liked having the restaurant integrated in the hotel and that it was close to the town center. Nothing
- Deborah (8/5): - Good staff with lovely warm welcome. Great breakfast. Evening meal was tasty too. Bed very comfortable. Good central location for exploring with secluded garden and on site parking. Didn't seem to be any hot water early morning but loads by breakfast time and later on. Maybe we were just too early.
- elaine (8/5): -
- brown (7/5): - DINNER SERVICE WAS A LITTLE SLOW, BUT FOOD VERY GOOD AND HOT WHEN IT ARRIVED.
- Carole (9/5): - Breakfast was delicious and included in the price of the room. Regretted not having our evening meal in the hotel … local options for eating were disappointing by comparison. Location of hotel was ideal for strolling round this beautiful town. Art galleries, museum and friendly local pub all within easy reach of the accommodation. Staff were helpful and friendly. Would happily book again.
- Janet (10/5): - .Friendly staff, comfy rooms and fab food. Room were quite small but fine for just one night. Nothing
- Cynthia (9/5): A comfortable and friendly place to stay - Friendly staff and excellent situation
- Venu (9/5): Good place to stay if you are visiting Galloway or nearby places. - Great location. The town itself has so many places to visit. There’s a car park right behind the hotel and it has a couple of Charge Scotland EV as well. Amazing breakfast included in the room rent. The room was very small. It didn’t bother me much because I was a solo traveller. But some may find it a bit claustrophobic.
- Alastair (9/5): Happy Spring days! - Staff were on good form. Good breakfast, dinner and drinks. Room was fairly easy to access (a consideration with age) and had what was needed. We've been a few times and this visit went very smoothly. The downsides are related to the age and style of the building. A historic place cannot have all the convenience and facilities of somewhere new but offers compensatory satisfactions that make it worth going.
- Craig (10/5): -
- Paula (9/5): We enjoyed our stay. The bed was comfy, the location was great and the staff was wonderful. - The staff. So friendly and helpful. The toilet in our room wasn’t working and they moved us to a new room right away. We also had to deal with our Visa being compromised while we were there and we forgot to make a reservation for dinner which was recommended - when we came down for dinner, the accommodated us and we ended our not-so-great day in a good way. Thank you! Prior to moving rooms, first thing in the morning, there was a man on a ladder right outside our window scraping paint and working on the window sill (9 am). We were up and heading out but it was uncomfortable.
- Philip (9/5): -
- Carol (10/5): The staff were really lovely and attentive - Very central in town . Bedroom lovely size and clean extras like tea coffee biscuits shower gel and handwash welcomed . The dinner was amazing and breakfast was a delight . The breakfast menu had the days weather on it , the low and high tide times and a local walk and cycle route which was a lovely touch . Would recommend to anyone
- Kirsten (10/5): - Really helpful and friendly staff. Evening meal and breakfast were both delicious. Excellent location only a short walk from the delights of Kirkcudbright.
- John (10/5): - The most helpful and friendly staff. Really make you feel welcome.
- May (9/5): Relaxing stay with an incredible breakfast - Wonderful historic hotel. The breakfast was really tasty and outstanding. The staff were kind and helpful. The pillows were a little too soft and unsupportive.
- Gareth (10/5): Fantastic stay in great surroundings, great food, lovely staff, highly recommend 😊 - Warm and welcoming, lovely converted cottage room
- Jane (8/5): Brilliant and we plan to return, - All meals were delicious, served by attentive and efficient staff There was no lift, so some floors were a bit of a hike.
- Jacqui (10/5): We’re looking for excuses to come back. - I liked the sense of history. It felt quirky and full of character and individual, unlike corporate-owned chains.
The food was really good. The staff were really accommodating and friendly.
We felt cared about. Nothing really, only a little inconvenience of the extractor fan not working in the bathroom.
- Howard (10/5): Perfection - Everything, !!
Lovely comfortable stay over Easter .Nothing was too much trouble, and the extra finishing touches were noticed and appreciated.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Food both breakfast and eve meal exceptional, very good choice, portions, value for money and delicious.

- George (10/5): Brilliant - Very nice hotel and nice room Just shower not working properly
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional quality service - The staff could not do enough for you, nothing was to much trouble, always polite, friendly and professional, the hotel was excellent, my wife is hard of walking and needs easy access which the staff / management made for her, and adviced the room to have the next time we come, which we will as this is the place for us when visiting friends Nothing, everything was great for us, the menus for breakfast, snacks and dinner were great, the delivery was even better, its the many extra little touches that make it all so good example breakfast menu has things to do today, the expected weather, tides etc, great thought goes into the well being of the customer, on the last day I invited a friend to join us for breakfast before we left for the long drive home, nothing was a problem.... This is quality service, thank you very much
- Lynne (9/5): Excellent stay. - It all went very well, the room was good and nice and warm and comfy. the food was great and tasty. There was nothing not to like.
- John (9/5): We have stayed at The Selkirk Arms a number of times and always enjoy our visits. - The breakfast was excellent and offered several choices and used high quality local produces .
The location in a quiet picturesque street close to the harbour and town centre of Kirkudbright is very good and offers both an hotel car park plus ample on street parking with no restrictions.
- Anne (9/5): -
- Jennifer (10/5): - Lovely room, clean and tidy. Staff were lovely- we had to be up early and they arranged early breakfast and check out without any hesitation. Nothing
- Andrew (10/5): Nice hotel tucked away in a lovely location - Lovely restaurant and garden at the back of the property. Nothing
- Trevor (10/5): - Everything Nothing
- Jean (8/5): I like the hotel and location - Excellent hotel and evening meal Very small room
Vegetarian breakfast not recommended
No vegetarian haggis on both days
One tasteless vegetarian sausage
- Elizabeth (10/5): Our second stay in the Selkirk Arms and it didn’t disappoint - Stayed in room 1, it was cosy and comfortable, shower excellent. N/A everything was great
- Guy (10/5): Excellent will definitely stay again should we head that way. - One of the best, if not the best, hotel we have stayed in for many years.
Quiet, comfortable, attentive staff, good food and sensible prices.
What's not to like? Nothing to report.
- Rory (6/5): -
- Hunt (8/5): - The hotel is very good and staff are excellent. Very helpful and friendly Shower was a little disappointing. Water flow was poor
- Jenni (9/5): Friendly cosy hotel, lovely town 🥰 - Lovely overnight stay visiting family, cosy atmosphere, delightful staff, so friendly and helpful, would definitely recommend 🥰 Hot water took a while to come through in the morning, maybe just a heads up to run the tap for a long time 🥰piping hot when it came through!!
- Julie (10/5): Very good - Very comfortable room.
Welcome good.
Nice breakfast
Would definitely return
- Watson (8/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): Warm, comfy, cosy. Great welcome and great food. - Warm and cosy. Rooms nice, comfortable. Hotel is lovely. Bar abd resturant were excellent with variety of local produce alongside the Christmas menu. Nothing - all was good.
- John (9/5): - Nothing
- Alex (9/5): Good hotel nice friendly staff and very good food - Close to where I am working and easy to book.
- Mark (10/5): -
- Shona (9/5): Well looked after by the staff, excellent facilities - Very clean and well decorated
- Paul (9/5): - The most amazing, excellent food, massive compliments to the chef. Fresh ingredients superbly cooked. Professional pleasant staff. Decor and ambience v good. Room was a bit chilly, condensation on single glazed windows didn,t help, but fully appreviate this is an old property. Water pressure not v good, took ages to get hot water coming through. Also, cheeseboard andcreal ales a bit disappointing
- ALFONS (8/5): Klassiek hotel in oude stijl, met kleinere kamers, maar mooie ruimtes beneden om bvb iets te lezen - Heel klassiek Schots hotel. Mooie gemeenschappelijke ruimtes. Kleine kamer
- Natalie (9/5): -
- Rose (9/5): Relaxing, friendly, most enjoyable stay. Will return. - The staff were exceptionally helpful and flexible. The food was lovely with lots of choices. It was quiet and very conveniently positioned in Kirkcudbright for exploring the area. We were in single beds but duvets seemed to be double size. They tended to slide to the side because of their weight. I felt pinned down.
- nicholas (10/5): -
- Paula (9/5): Beautiful hotel, rich in history. Very helpful staff and lovely meal - Location, food was fab Our room was lovely and clean but on the small side
- Matthew (10/5): -
- John (9/5): - Really good
- Michael (9/5): A lovely hotel, made exceptional by the outstanding staff and quality of the food. - The staff were exceptional. Joanna welcomed us so warmly and made us feel very welcomed throughout.
Food in the restaurant at dinner was exceptional. Fantastic breakfast. Room 9 is next to an extractor fan in the room next door (shower maybe). Our neighbours were early risers and the fan is ‘wake me up’ noisy.
But the overall experience outweighed that.
- Glenn (8/5): - For Robert Burns fans, this is a must stop. And lots of Burns commemorations in the lounge area. I happened to get the room they said Burns stayed in, but they had no portrait, plaque, or other acknowledgement of the fact. I was delighted to be there, but disappointed that there was nothing in that room to celebrate the multiple stays by Scotland's most historic VIP.
- Christopher (8/5): - Location. Use of annex.
- Ian (7/5): Pets allowed, but not dog friendly - Location, parking, lovely breakfast, nicely decorated, cosy rooms. Lovely outside space for warmer months. Reception and waiting staff friendly and helpful. Bathroom needs updating, loose floor tiles, gapping around the bath, old windows lovely but need some tlc..
Not dog friendly, dogs not allowed anywhere you can eat, only in one room for drinks only.
Housekeeping not up to scratch, needed to ask for water, tea tray re stock and hoovering, as not done until we asked on day 4.
Managers attitude.
- Ann (8/5): -
- Tammy (8/5): -
- Liz (10/5): A lovely friendly hotel with great food. - The food is excellent. We had a fantastic dinner in the evening and the next morning breakfast was also great. Staff were lovely, very welcoming and friendly. A good place to stay if you want to explore that part of Scotland. The weather but it is Scotland
- Caroline (9/5): - Lovely large room by the garden. Great breakfast. Helpful staff. Replenished supplies such as water, tea/coffee every day Footstep noise from occupants in room above early in morning.
- Robert (5/5): centralt, lugnt, bra frukost men litet trångt dubbelrum - bra frukost. generös och vällagad
rymligt badrum med badkar rummet var alldeles för litet. vette mot soptunnor och en restaurangfläkt(!)
- Trevor (10/5): Keep coming back every year - Central location, friendly professional staff, excellent breakfast cooked to order and dinner was fantastic highly recommend dining in their restaurant. Nothing
- simon (9/5): -
- Manja (9/5): Schönes Hotel mit super Lage - Sehr nettes Hotel mit guter Lage in den Ort. Private Parkplätze vor der Tür.
Abendessen war hervorragend.
- Ingrid (5/5): Not great - Main light in the bedroom not working
Impossible to reach the soap from the bath tub as mounted high up the wall
Difficult to get soap out of the dispenser
No hot water in the morning
- paul (9/5): -
- Tim (10/5): -
- Robert (8/5): -
- Jacqueline (10/5): - Everything. Friendly prompt service, excellent bed and bedding. Food wonderful. Just all over great.
- Lesley (8/5): -
- Gillian (9/5): Very pleasant couple of days. Would happily stay there again. - Hotel was spotlessly clean. Staff very attentive. Lots of lovely little details. Breakfast was lovely. Room spacious. Had dinner on both nights which was delicious too. More choice at breakfast buffet maybe.
- Wendy (10/5): Lovely place to stay - Very safe, great breakfast N/A
- Ricche (10/5): Ottimo - Ottimo albergo, miglior ristorante di questa vacanza in Inghilterra (Tour di 20 gg) putto perfetto
- jane (10/5): excellent - everything
- Richard (9/5): Relaxing in a pleasant environment - Great staff . Lovely garden to rear. A nice well priced menu Nothing
- Moira (9/5): - Lovely, friendly hotel. We were made to feel very welcome. Everything was fine
- Sandra (10/5): Can not wait to go back. - What a fantastic town, so friendly, lots of places to visit and things to do. Hotel was fantastic great room, very comfy bed, lots Celt bar and restaurants outstanding food. Staff were wonderful. Nothing
- Jill (4/5): - Kirkcudbright is a nice town to stop at.
I think there is probably not a massive range of good accommodation available.
I would say the room was clean. Decor. The whole place looked like it needed a complete overall.
It was easily the least desirable place we had stayed for the most money.
Food was very average for quite a lot of money. We stayed in a pub in Portpagrick for £60 less and it was just as nice and the evening meal was massively better.
- Helen (8/5): Enjoyable stay but room and bathroom felt a little tired. - Good location staff excellent.
Food very tasty. One of the main courses could have been served hotter.
The room above appeared to have quite a noisy macerator.
- Wendy (9/5): Excellent stay - Lovely spacious room, very comfortable bed. Plenty of tea & coffee, even a sachet of hot chocolate. The breakfast was very good, the black pudding was excellent. The staff were all lovely and friendly. Only minor gripe i had personally was that someone ran a bath very early in the morning and you could hear the bath running and then the water draining away, obviously this is an old building so maybe the walls are not soundproof. I was in room 20. This would definitely not put me off staying here though.
- MsThornton (5/5): Nice location and room. Fine Breakfast. Noisy Room. Poor Sleep Quality. Dont take your Dog. - The location of the hotel was good with easy parking. The breakfast was fine - but verged a little on the stodgy side. No croissants, cheeses or meat. The tea was always cold in the pot. But the food served seems to have been plentiful if you are into fried breakfasts. The room was large with plenty of storage. The bed was comfortable. The was generally OK but not really worth the £320 that we paid for the two nights. Especially as our sleep quality was so poor. The bathrooms are in a serious need of upgrade - every morning the two people in the room next door - and indeed in the evening - when they had a shower the noise sounded like concorde landing. So no cosy late lies for us - it was the worst noise I have ever heard in a hotel - so bad I recorded it. I reported this to the staff on the desk - but no one got back to me. There also seems to be a cistern noise in Room 7 and that sounded like chains being dragged about - it was quite constant. The noise factor would certainly put me off having a second stay or advising Room 7 as a good place to stay. I would have requested a different room but it was fully booked. When I got home I was so tired, I went to bed. Also having arthristis and mobility issues - I found leaning over to grasp a rail on the opposite wall to clamber over the side of the bath a bit of a to-do. I worried about slipping. The toiletries on offer for £320 for two nights seemed rather poor value. Just a hand wash attached to the wall next to the sink and another in the shower area - if you did choose to have a bath - I am not sure how you would have got to the cleaning product. I could hardly get it out of the bottle due to it being firmly attached to the wall - it was not good. I was a wee bit penny pinching - there seemed to be a lot of penny pinching - which takes me nicely onto our dog!
I didnt like the fee for the dog being advertised at £7 on booking.com - where I booked - but there was an attended they tried to charge £10 for a dog for the night as their own website said £10. It also was rather poor value for money - as the dog wasnt really allowed anywhere - just in the room. Nae drinks for us then at the bar! Given other reviews about the food and the stodginess of the breakfast fare - we didnt book dinner. To be fair it was sold out - so the food must be good.
But would I stay here again. Not with those bathrooms and the noise - did I leave and feel rested no - did I think it was expensive YES
