Guest Reviews
- Welch (8/5): -
- Isobel (1/5): Don’t bother booking, read the reviews and book elsewhere! - Nothing! Disgustingly dirty. No details to say that will be put up in a portacabin in the very dark unlit car park. Rude and unhelpful staff. There is a dog that bites that is allowed to roam freely in the car park leaving you with a Russian roulette dash to your car! Didn’t stay for the 2nd night we had booked - no refund offered or any interest shown why we chose to leave. Breakfast is a joke - a stale sausage sandwich.

Facilities and beds.
Parking.
Pub grub.
Quietness.
- Marek (6/5): - No cooked breakfast, just an all-day breakfast sandwich in the fridge. No chance to regulate temper for shower. Way to hot to take a shower
- RICHARD (10/5): - The pub food is exceptional. Nothing.
- Jason (9/5): -
- Ian (8/5): Great couple of weeks whilst up here working - Clean warm rooms good food and friendly staff Nothing
- Welch (10/5): - Great food well priced
- Darran (8/5): - Location. Lovely village but you really need to stay in the annex out back Room was cold ! Quilt cover was very thin
- Ben (7/5): -

- Leanne (1/5): Do Not Stay Here - Do not stay at this property.
Myself and a colleague checked ourselves into this property in the evening and left during the night. When we booked this accommodation we were completely unaware that we would not be residing inside of the pub itself, and we would in fact be in an outbuilding, at the end of a very dark carpark/wooded area.
This was a business trip and it did not feel like a safe location for us to stay. The bedding was also filthy.
I have tried to contact this accommodation and Booking.com on multiple occasions to register a complaint but neither has responded so far.
I will let you be the judge of the photographs taken
- Stuart (8/5): -
- Graeme (10/5): - Excellent stay, the room was very comfortable I had a great sleep. The food in the bar was also excellent, a very good pork chop.
- john (9/5): Great weekend for the horse racing - Great friendly pub, good evening meal Breakfast box was very nice, but you can't beat a good breakfast
- Welch (10/5): - Nice place - for 1 for 1 night nothing it was great
- Nigel (8/5): -
- Julie (10/5): -
- Owen (9/5): - Our room was very large, and the Sunday carvery was the best I've had in a long time Room could have been cleaner, beer garden needs some attention
- Salter (9/5): Lovely friendly place will be back - I liked everything. Room was cosy on a main road but not busy or too noisy. Bed was really comfy I have severe insomnia but slept well and slept in! Breakfast in room was enough and I liked not having to get up and rush down for breakfast it was just eat at your leisure. I don't eat meat but no worries was provided with a vegetarian sausage sandwich. Staff were fabulous and really thoughtful and id like too extend another thankyou for kindness that was shown and accommodating me with waiting for bus . I loved the area and the friendly folks definitely recommend. Nothing
- Caroline (7/5): Satisfactory - There was a fridge in the room, generous amount of milk, tea, coffee etc, nice biscuits. Massive cobweb above main bed. Room smelled a bit musty, especially the bathroom. It wouldn’t be that difficult to put a couple of air fresheners in there and do a more thorough cleaning job.
- Peter (9/5): -
- Neil (10/5): - Nice room and good dining options.
- Chris (9/5): -
- Julie (7/5): Nice place but needs a little TLC - Lovely garden to sit out in and for the dogs
Friendly staff
Food decent
Beds comfy In the morning the shower was too hot to use. It did not seem to be able to cool down. Stayed at one temperature
Although the breakfast was provided in the room it was not great only had the cereal
Volume on TV went up but not down using the remote. New batteries were provided but still didn't work.
Please get rid of the bird poo on the handrail!
- Karen (7/5): Met expectations - Breakfast had good choice. Shame milk was off. Basic but ok for Monday next. Nice welcome. Bed bit hard but ok.
- Mark (8/5): Very good - The landlord was very welcoming, accommodating and friendly. The bar was very comfortable and clean and it was priced reasonably. There was plenty of room in the spacious car park and our room had everything we needed. Great little stop over!
- Salamat (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (2/5): - Well what a load of rubbish, breakfast is a cold bacon sausage sandwich in the fridge with cornflakes and banana.Towels had a damp smell on them,Definitely won’t be staying here again
- Pamela (10/5): - Just used for a one night stay. Room not cleaned very well.
- Andrew (8/5): Good Valve. - Good old fashioned boozer.
Good selection of beers and food. Breakfast was in the fridge all day and night.
- Irvine (3/5): Unfortunately Disappointed - Staff were friendly and welcoming, lodge is set to the rear of the pub. Large room With the cleanliness of the room and being shocking, and stained towels, it made it difficult to feel comfortable.
Breakfast was a sausage and bacon sandwich in the fridge in your room, cereal and fruit.
Bathroom light cut out whilst in the shower.
- Neil (10/5): - Good sized room. Excellent menu options for dinner.
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (5/5): Passable - the room was huge. Not the cleanest, to be fair it was not filthy but there were a lot of old stains on floors and walls. The towels were pretty poor. Hotel is listed as breakfast included. That breakfast is a fun size box of corn flakes, packet of supermarket sandwiches, an apple, banana and a small orange juice. The food was all in the fridge in the room just a shame the fridge didn't actually work !!
- Victor (9/5): Manager and staff friendly and helpful.Would recommend. - Traditional pub with congenial food and ale on offer- quite satisfied overall. Problems with paying reservation booking - Booking.com could have been more helpful.
- Paul (8/5): Friendly place , great food , excellent value. - A friendly village pub , off street parking , great homemade food, welcoming atmosphere. Single room quite small but adequate.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Quiet - Quiet friendly place with food that wasn't bad. Off the beaten track but that suited me. A very cold night and even with extra heater was still nippy. Couldn't recommend in winter.
- Chaplin (10/5): great stay - Our stay here was lovely, staff friendly and helpful, Our evening meals were very nice, I thought the Venison sausage was very tasty!
Location is a bit out of the way for where we needed to be, but not too far to the motorways to travel to Scunthorpe and Doncaster. No outdoor light at the side of the rooms, so you walked in the dark, fine coming out because you had the shine of the Tavern light.
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (9/5): Superb - Clean accommodation, comfortable bed, good food.
- Tina (6/5): This was ok for what I needed that night but probably wouldn’t stay again - The lady on the bar was friendly. The room was a little tired , could have been cleaner the small lamp had dust on it which was obvious to anyone and generally the cleaning was ok but not great. Internet didn’t work . In the description it stated the room had a view this was actually the back yard with a load of wood in it
- Stephen (10/5): I loved it! - Its a delightful tavern. Plenty of room on the car park and onto a traditional, friendly bar where my hosts booked me in quickly and with a great intro to how everything worked. I had room 2, in a purpose built outbuilding and I was really pleased with the first impression. Everything worked as it should and there were lots of extras not normally given in this type of accommodation. The bed was kingsize, the room had alot of space, a fridge, hot chocolate as well as the usual tea and coffee. My breakfast was in the room (see pictures). Edit - the pictures won't upload!
I arrived too late to use the restaurant but the menu was varied and looked like the meals were good value - maybe next time...
- Kevin (6/5): River Don Tavern - Not up to scratch - Needs to make it clearer in the details that the restaurant does not operate on a Monday (and no local takeaways) & that the breakfast is sort of continental in the room.
Single room in main building is small but adequate, small fridge (but noisy).
Bed not very comfy.
Will not be staying here again
- Michael (10/5): Just a good place to be - Great place to stay. always made welcome
- Michelle (8/5): Very good - Nice comfortable room with mini fridge and milk tea and coffee supplied as well as biscuits. Not sure where to drop keys off in the morning
- Ian (7/5): Good -
- Nicholas (9/5): Good value , well hosted . - Single Room was small but very well equipped. Arrived on a Sunday and the carvery was still open - super meal !
- Michael (9/5): Friendly welcoming place with great single room - Well set up bedroom complete with fridge, eat in / takeaway breakfast. Everything you needed was there. Front of house friendly and helpful, nice real ale beer available. Good selection on menu Bathroom shower screen could have been cleaner but hard water area so slways a challenge.
- Jenny (8/5): - The girls/women were really helpful, friendly and polite.
The food was delicious and a great portion.
The bar was warm with a good atmosphere.
The chalet we had was clean, warm and had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable.
- Cassandra (10/5): Cozy warm rooms and great breakfast in room. - Lovely property with super friendly staff & cozy rooms. Was in a single room and it was perfect to get my head down. Good parking and lovely little breakfast in the mini fridge. Bacon & sausage sandwich, orange juice, milk for cereal, water and fruit.
Lovely idea
- Rob (8/5): Very good -
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Seb (9/5): Superb - Excellent location, good friendly staff.
Recommend the food in the pub, especially the chilli don burger.
- Jatinder (7/5): Good -
- John (2/5): Tired, unclean accommodation that requires immediate refresh, did not stay the duration booked. - Very little unfortunately, the staff member that I spoke with upon arrival was friendly. Overall general cleanliness of the accommodation was below par, the bedding was laundered but the runners upon the bed were stained. The towels were tired in need of renewing, there were dead insects at the border of the carpet and each wall (wood lice, damsel flies and flies).
The shower and bathroom had been cleaned but there were hairs stuck to the toilet, wash basin and shower tray. The complimentary shower get and soap dispensers were rusted and in need of renewing. TV remote was unhygienic with food matter or staining in amongst the buttons.
‘Breakfast’ that was included consisted of a cold sausage and bacon sandwich that was sweating within the fridge along with 2 boxes of cornflakes and muesli. This was unexpected from a venue that advertises full cooked breakfasts?!
We did not stay for the second night and due to extremely tight time commitments we did not have the time to discuss these issues with the hosts nor await any resolution as we needed to make other arrangements and attend a Wedding.
- Angela (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kantelis (5/5): Passable -
- Dennis (10/5): River Don Review - Easy check in at the bar and a friendly welcome. Car park was big enough to find a space at the rear. Room was clean and cosy, and I slept soundly. DIY breakfast in the room, though hot meals available for those planning a longer stay. Good, honest establishment and great value for money.
- Ian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Seb (7/5): Good - Excellent location, meals were superb. Had a lovely stay. Would most definately return. Only downside was the fact we couldn't turn the shower temp down. But this was quickly rectified once raised.
- Racheal (8/5): - The room was a good size with plenty of room for 2 people to stay comfortably. There was a fridge with a large bottle of drinkable tap water.
The bed was okay but I have a bad back so brought a single topper with me.
The staff were lovely and helpful. The TV remote wasn’t working so the lady swapped it for me. She also got me an extra bottle of water every day.
- Ronald (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly staff and locals alike, Steep stairs to room,
- Wayne (9/5): Tasty Tavern on River Don - Location, premises and staff. The carvery was superb and staff helpful and hardworking. Only problem was the "breakfast" fridge had not been plugged in so milk went off in the heat. Not a problem.
- Philip (5/5): Disappointing. Sure they could do better. - Breakfast OK, location good for us as we were just passing through the area. Room cleanliness. Lots of spiders webs, spiders , cobwebs etc around the ceiling. Some marks on bedding. Smell in bathroom, possibly from the drains.
- Holehouse (8/5): Very good -
- Jane (7/5): Good - Had dinner in the Tavern, which was excellent. The breakfast wasn't great, as it was a pre-cut sandwich, but it could have been swapped for a bun in the morning. Its' just that we wanted to leave early and it felt like too much faff. But apart from that it was clean, comfortable and good for the dog. Though I had booked a single room originally without a refund option, and then I was told it was not a dog friendly room and I had to have a more expensive room. Apparently this was a booking.com failure of information, but it was a bit annoying. As my husband ended up joining me it wasn't a problem, as then I needed a double room.
- Clair (5/5): Passable -
- Dan (8/5): Very good -
- Mellanie (8/5): In the middle of nowhere - Fantastic food and Gordon & Karen are great hosts
- Michael (10/5): - What a pleasure..By far the best in the area. .Room was a treat , Dinner was to die for..
- Nigel (10/5): - Comfortable little bolt-hole, just what I was looking for and needed. Will be using again.
- Lesley (10/5): Great place to stop and break up journey - Everything great location and away from tavern and very quiet Nothing
- Thomas (10/5): Great location and very friendly - Very friendly
- Ian (7/5): Location is easy to find, & parking is good. Restaurant food was good and prices were v reasonable. - Easy to locate and the parking is excellent, good selection on the menu and the prices were very reasonable. Nice selection of beers if you fancy a pint. Staff were friendly and helpful. The room was compact but adequate. Bed was comfy. The mini fridge sitting on top of the workspace/desktop containing the buffet style breakfast was leaking and the noise was intrusive. The coffee cup and spoons needed to be cleaned before use. The tray holding the tea coffee etc: looked as it had not been cleaned for some time. The ensuite was very cramped, just about enough space to sit on the loo.
- Darryl (10/5): Very comfortable and made felt welcome - Very friendly stayed here for four nights with work. Food was fantastic nice comfortable ensuite single person‘s room couldn’t fault the place would hardly recommend any work man on his own working away for a good evening meal and a good night sleep even when the food isn’t available on a Monday night you can order in, from the local village Indian is super is the pizza and kebab shop what can I say? The chef? Gorden Landlord cannot do enough for you very reasonable priced and very large portions
- Verified traveler (2/5): - I tried to cancel this booking but was unable to and Hotels.com isnt very helpful when trying to do this. I spoke with the property owner and he was unable to cancel the booking either.
- Roberts (7/5): I would stay again, despite some of the minor flaws - The room was spacious and comfortable, a huge bed with a handy desk for my laptop work and a tea and coffee making facility. Nice garden, quiet setting. Good sized bathroom also.
I had time to visit the local RSPB reserve just a few miles north. My kinda thing, enjoyed it. The breakfast, although included, was a self-catering in-room affair, comprising a pint of fresh milk and a pre-packed bacon and egg sandwich in the room fridge, a choice of two small box cereals and a banana and apple. A bit unusual and if this had been declared on the booking info, I would still have booked but I wouldn't have had a slightly underwhelming surprise.
I stayed on a Monday, the only day of the week they don't serve food in the tavern, again should have been made clear on the booking.
The shower was defective due to previous occupant forcing the thermostat control past the anti-scald stop, so had to get washed army style. The shower head should also be replaced.
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carol (10/5): - Easy to find. Lovely, quiet area.
- Nick (8/5): excellent value and comfort - breakfast and room comforts were excellent and appreciated. they will want to replace the tv soon as the sound is shot, but other than that small thing it was all good
- Richard (7/5): Good - I stayed here after travelling up from London for a music festival. The owner was really good and helped me out with sorting cabs etc prior to my stay and the staff member who checked us in was very friendly. The food in the pub was excellent, real comfort pub grub and reasonably priced. The area was quiet, and considering the pub car park is right outside, I barely heard a thing. The room was more than adequate and the bathroom is a decent size for an en-suite Though the rooms are very reasonably priced and more than adequate for a few nights, they do feel dated but there is nothing a bit of modernisation and decorating wouldn't sort. I felt that considering how isolated the location is and the likelihood of people returning early and spending the evening in the room , things like a smart TV with netfix etc would be a good addition and stronger WiFi that exclusively serves the lodge.
- Craig (8/5): - Great value for money and fantastic food - big portions...nom nom
- Carl (8/5): Perfect for our needs would stay again - Quiet location and Accommodation separate to pub Nothing
- Subramaniam (8/5): Very good -
- Brian (8/5): Very good - The locality and cost and pleasant staff No adjustment on the shower.
The water was scolding hot
- Louisa (5/5): Brilliant at first glance but a few niggles made the stay merely adequate. - The Room was a fantastic size
The room was very accessible for the elderly/disabled.
The double bed was huge and comfortable.
There were a good selection of hot drinks and a varied breakfast selection.
The staff and check in/check out were superb. The room smelled stale. Had to leave the window open all night.
The bathroom smelled a little of smoking.
The shower curtain had black mold on the bottom.
The TV didn't work. Kept glitching on anything other than BBC 1 and BBC 2.
The remote control was filthy.
- Kay (10/5): - Good location, quiet, large room and bed so plenty of space. Excellent food with good service; would recommend it and would stay again!
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marije (7/5): Good - Good location, with a garden and big parking space. Room in a separate building, clean, spaceous. Dog friendly. No dinner at this Tavern (we took dinner from an Indian place nearby, which was great), breakfast simple (2 sandwiches from a box or milk-cornflakes/muesli and orange juice).
- Billings (8/5): Very good -
- Pam (9/5): Been here numerous times before - happy to be back again - I like the setting - near to Blacktoft Sands which is excellent for marsh harriers!
Everything I needed was here for me. Can't think of anything
