Guest Reviews
- SONG (10/5): -
- Lucian (9/5): Highly recommended - Very cozy and spacious. Great location and the host was very responsive and accommodating. Nothing
- Clara (9/5): Kan varmt anbefales - Virkelig charmerende og rummeligt hus, som hele min familie og jeg nød at være i. Utroligt god beliggenhed.
- Mohan (8/5): - Nice place just in front it the castle
- Jeremy (10/5): -
- Ibuki (10/5): -
- Perry (10/5): - The owner is very responsive and helpul.
House is Japanese style and we liked it. None
- Peggy (9/5): - Popotel is directly located next to the Matsumoto castle and everything is within walking distance. During late autumn/winter it can become quite cold so make sure to turn on the provided heater
- Kai Wen (8/5): -
- Georgia (10/5): - The amazing cubby
thingamajiggy that was up high so we could watch TV while in it BASICALLY NOTHING!!!
- Hung (10/5): -
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Evelien (9/5): Great and cozy house, especially with kids! - What a nice and cozy house!! We were with 2 little kids and it is really convenient to put them to bed and have some relaxing time in the living room. They also had a super cute sort of corner for the kids where they could relax. It would be so helpful if they could make the curtains darker. In the room with the double bed there is a curtain, but early morning the sun comes through the sides of it, I think it is an easy fix! Also in the other bedroom it would be great if they could make the curtains darker and make sure that there are curtains in front of all the windows (so the kids also sleep a little longer!).
- Cheryl (9/5): Traditional but modern special place - Location, all facilities to cook a meal, able to warm or cool house, size and atmosphere Steps between rooms trip hazard
- Thamonwan (9/5): Superb - Very close to Matsumoto castle, the parking is nearby. The house a bit old but still comfortable and clean.
- Chiann (9/5): Superb -
- Daniel (9/5): Great place and brilliant ocation, huge space and friendly atmosphere. -
- Lynnette (9/5): vintage cozy home - THIS HOUSE WAS SUPER COZY AND A VIBE!!!
We had everything we needed for our stay and there was even a dryer and washer. Many rooms and definitely worth it if you stay with friends. We stayed during early winter where temperatures can drop to -4°C. The toilets were freezing cold and we were constantly camping in front of the heaters, which did time out every 3 hours. So whenever we sleep, we either have to turn on the heater again or just wake up to a cold room.
- Wing (9/5): Fun experience staying in a former hostel - It was very spacious with lots of amenities and personal touch. The host even created a space for kids to play in. The curtains weren’t dark enough in the bunk bed area and there weren’t any curtains in the attic
- Pauline (10/5): Exceptional - Very english friendly house. Had everything needed
Bonus the little accessibility maps in the living room
- Denis (10/5): Exceptional - Extremely cosy accomodation! It's full of fun and entertaining stuff - you really at risk of spending several hours exploring the place. Location is great near the Matsumoto Castle and a stone throw to other main sights. It has everything inside you need for your stay. And it's spacious to accommodate maybe 8 or even 10 people. So if you are just 4 like we - then you live almost like in palace. Nothing to mention.
- David (10/5): Really enjoyed our stay and would stay here again - The vibe. Could watch Netflix in English. Also close to castle. Enjoyed riding bikes. Also two bathrooms. Relatively close to train station for day trips. Had refrigerator and freezer and stove to cook meals
- Sebastian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kotyk (10/5): amazing stay at Matsumoto Castle - amazing location, fun decor, tons and tons of space, kitchen was better stocked than anywhere else we've stayed, super comfy, lots of outlets, washers and dryer
- Emily (10/5): Amazing Japanese accomodation! - Amazing house which will give you the Japanese family house experience! Price was great for the facility provided and location was just 10 minutes walk to the city center, perfect!
- Kate (8/5): Lovely experience, both the property and city ticked all of our boxes. - The house was huge for a family of 4. We enjoyed the traditional features and living. The property was homely, comfortable and interesting. It offered everything we needed.
It is located within a short walk to Matsumoto Castle, park and other featured attractions. The bicycles provided by the property also offered an additional 'win' for us as we cycled around the city and enjoyed the sights and food on offer.
- Vanessa (10/5): Exceptional - Nice house, nice town
- Matt (10/5): Surprisingly large and convenient option - I realize it's stated clearly here, but I was not prepared for how large this space actually is! It is a former hostel which could easily house 10-15 people across multiple bedrooms and you get to rent the whole thing! It has an unheard-of amount of space for lodging in Japan, and it also happens to be within view of Matsumoto Castle and within easy walking distance to the main draws of Matsumoto city. Definitely don't pass on this option if you are traveling with a large family. We were sad to check out.
- Mck (9/5): Superb - Location, staff and rhe services, clean accommodation. The price ( very generous). We struggled to lock the door of the entrance each time, and it was difficult to open the window of the 2nd floor (room).
- Silke (9/5): Superb - Perfect location. Very clean. -
- David (10/5): A wonderful and spacious house - We had the whole house to ourselves staying as a family of five. The home was beautiful, very very spacious and comfortable and spotlessly clean throughout. There was every kind of appliance you could ever imagine needing throughout the house with very useful instructions on everything. The kitchen was also very well equipped. The location is next to Matsumoto castle and there is plenty of parking available nearby. The host was very kind and helpful. TOP ! nothing
- Ian (7/5): Good - Property is close to Matsumoto Castle, parking close by for a few and it felt really authentic. Some doors don’t lock on the courtyard
- Georgina (8/5): Very good -
- Piotr (10/5): Exceptional - Spacious property with a lot of possibilities for arranging your stay. Great and extremely helpful host, who was very concerned about our smallest requests. Bikes on site, which help a lot in moving around Matsumoto. The perfect location near the castle makes it a center of your stay in the city, while Matsumoto itself makes it a great starting point for one-day trips in the region. There are maps and tips all around the property. The equipment and switches are all subtitled in English, so it's much easier to use them. And last but not least: the beds/futons were the most comfortable and warm in the of our trip in Japan! Next time we'll stay much longer, it's a real home away from home! Nearby parking is just 800JPY per day, a real bargain.
- Ahmad (10/5): Awesom - Just 2 minute away by foot from Matsumoto Castle. All good
- Belinda (9/5): Fun house for family, excellent location, excellent communication. - The staff were excellent, they were off site of course so we never met them but the communication was outstanding! The location was fantastic and the house was as super cute. The only thing we didn’t like was that it was quite cold, even with all the heat pumps on ( we didn’t like the kerosene heaters). Though were warm enough in bed because of the fabulous thick duvets.
- Christopher (9/5): Home away from home - A home environment gives you plenty of space and room for the family to spread out, especially with so many bed/sleeping options. Way bigger than we needed for 5, but the pricing was great value. So close the the Matsumoto Castle and easy walking to local shopping and dining. Time restrictions on using the washing machine was annoying, especially with a one night stay.
- Nolan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Graeme (10/5): Cute and comfortable - A cute and very comfortable house. We felt at home straight away. The hosts were very responsive and friendly. Try the Hankyu archery that the hosts provide. It’s lots of fun!
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ashwin1092 (7/5): Good -
- Krit (9/5): Superb - Close to matsumoto castle.
- Noor (8/5): A comfortable stay near Matsumoto Castle - Hippo Inn is located about 5 minutes from Matsumoto Castle, the main attraction of the city. And it is also walkable to the train station and Nakawate and Nakamachi shopping streets.
The property was comfortably furnished and had all the amenities we needed during our stay.
But most importantly, our host Eiryo san was very helpful and accommodating. He was very responsive and helped us in every way he could. He even helped sent our luggages to the train station when we were leaving Matsumoto.
- Teresa (10/5): Homely and confortable! - Cosy and homely. We have been tired from travelling and the space was so lovely we pretty much stayed in all evening and watched tv in the heated table. We also slept really well! Would definitely come back. Nothing.
- Cathy (9/5): Memorable for mainly good reasons - Amazingly quirky. A bit cluttered in the living area
Some low ceilings/ doorways
- Marcus (7/5): Good - Very quaint and cosy with lots of character. Great having the entire place to ourselves. Helpful instructions given on how to use the facilities. Shower and kitchen were simple but had everything we needed. Board games were provided. Big Tv. Offers some experience of living in a traditional Japanese home. While it was located right beside the castle, this meant that it was a little further off from the main shopping area near the train station. It was one of only two buildings beside an empty stretch of road and felt a little too quiet at night.
Upon entering the space also felt a bit stuffy and dusty. But this improved once we turned on the AC. We slept comfortably overall!
- Jiaying (9/5): Superb - The house is huge and comfortable, with all the facilities you need. The large TV with Netflix and Amazon is a big plus for my 7yo and keeps him entertained. Super close to the castle and we enjoyed the night walk. Many eateries within walking distance and we used the free bikes for a quick ride around the town too:)
- Jelmer (9/5): Wonderful - If you go to Matsumoto stay here. Wonderful place. You have the whole house to yourself. It is right next to Matsumoto Castle. Try the Hankyu bow and arrow which the hosts offer. It was great doing this my sons. Nothing, it was great
- 晶子 (10/5): Great place! Love the place! We will come back for sure😊 - The location was perfect! It was right next to h he Matsumoto castle. The place has everything you need. Really EVERYTHING! There is no parking area so you need to use coin parking which is very close.
- Soroth (10/5): Worth of money Best Location and very convenient. - The place is cute and feel like I am home. I would recommend this place if you visit Matsumoto. This place has no parking but there is a private parking about 1 to 2 minutes walk from the place and the parking fees is about 700 JPY for whole day, very convenient. Owner is very friendly. I will stay here again for sure if I have a chance to visit Matsumoto. If the group is very big. I think that it can be a long line for the shower room. But for my group only 5 pax, not a problem.
- Havlenová (10/5): such a lovely house and a host - The location is just amazing. We loved to look inside of a japanese home and experience the hospitality. there was nothing wrong
- Ian (9/5): Superb - big house, traditional Japanese style, quirky and fun, great location! i liked everything
- Taranjeet (10/5): faculty has got everything which needs to be there - Everything is arranged and planned so nicely and thoughtfully
it is spacious , good enough for 2 families
- Heather (7/5): One night stop over in April - We booked the entire house for a family of 3 and the place is huge! Way bigger than we needed but great fun place to stay in. Nice funky vibe. The location proved perfect for an early morning photo shoot at Crow Castle (a minute’s stroll away) before it opened and the crowds descend! At the end of the day it is a hostel and geared up for that function rather than as a single family place to stay.
- Erez (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ariel (10/5): Exceptional - Hosts were very responsive and accommodating. They helped us with some last minute changes and we're very kind. Location was perfect for walking to the Matsumoto castle ice festival, which was what we were visiting for. The family room was so fun for the kids. The kids also enjoyed the bunk beds and mom and dad had our own space just down the hall. Heaters were provided for the chilly evening that warmed us up after enjoying the cold night of ice sculpture adventures.
- Melanie (10/5): Amazon Host. - it’s quirky old school Japanese vibe. nothing. it was perfect for our 6 travelers.
- Nancy (10/5): Exceptional - The house was very spacious, it was probably a hostel with a lot of rooms before Covid19, as everything was accommodated for it. Very good location next to the Matsumoto Castle. The host was so super nice, he even gave us access to his private Cable TV to be able to watch the World Cup, as Argentina was playing the Finals! It was very important for me to watch the game, as I´m Argentinian. As it´s a very old house you need to heat every single room with the heaters. Well, it´s winter, so we managed...there were enough heaters so we could keep the rooms we used warm and cosy...
- Sarah (10/5): Very close to castle - Great location, would be ideal for a bigger group. Having Netflix was a nice touch nothing
- Tetsuya (8/5): Very good -
