• Hugo LVN (7/5): Trying their best but still not there... - Owner and staff were very professional and warm. Dinner was very good, with a variety of dishes with local products, and very tasty. The hotel is old. Although it has been renovated in the common areas, the room was old, and not properly cleaned. Lot of dust on the walls (especially toilet door), the toilet was stinky, and there were large insects inside the lights in the ceiling. The Onsen baths were surprisingly small for an Onsen village. The facilities are old, and not well maintained. It shows no renovation for decades. There are no slippers provided to walk inside the venue, and you let your shoes at the entrance, thus you walk in the common area and in your room in your socks. It was not necessarily less expensive than other similar hotels, and rather pricy, considering how old and not well maintained some facilities were. The building is old and you will hear the other guests in the room above your head. Also, there is no flexibility in dinner time (18:00). For the price, it is not satisfying. Besides, the bath are small, so often crowded, and there is not much to do to kill time after dinner and bath... This said, the staff is doing their best, and surely they still need money to carry on with renovations, but it is not adequate in this state. Some minor changes (slippers, amenities) could be made to improve the feeling at a low cost.

There are also English translation on the menu and also how to eat natto. Dinner spread is very interesting, instead of sashimi we were serve konjac sashimi. • Guy (5/5): Cute but noisy place to stay. - Really cute place with some nice onsen. Free parking. A bit of confusion over whether they were able to provide vegan food as part of the breakfast. Initially they said no online, but then when we arrived they said they might be able to. The first day they didn’t quite get it and provided some meat options, but I could still eat some of the things provided in the traditional breakfast. The next day I think a different chef had a better understanding so I could eat a few more of the things provided. I appreciate the staff trying their best considering the language barrier and I didn’t go hungry :) The traditional bedding wasn’t very comfortable and the floors in the building are very thin. I was woken up on the first morning at 5am by what sounded like a herd of elephants in the room above. The rooms vibrate with the footsteps of the people above. I didn’t sleep well here as the same people were up at 6am the next morning.

Les repas (petits déjeuners et dîners) sont exceptionnels, avec des petits plats et de des jolies assiettes. Nous avons pu profiter du onsen privé en famille, une belle découverte pour les enfants. Micasa is a good place to have a first contact with Ryokans as there are not too many guestrooms and the hosts are soo welcoming. The onsen were usable in a private setting which made this another good place for first contacts with Japanese experiences. All in all this has been a memorable highlight of our visit to Japan and a core memory will remain the farewell by the staff member. She has such a loving and engaged attitude. I don't know why, but something informed us that we had shared bathrooms. In the end this turned out to be false, as we had our own private bathroom and shower. I assume there is a wrong entry in booking.com?

• Alexis (10/5): - I have truly enjoyed my time at this hotel because it also had personal Onsens and public Onsens on site. I really enjoyed my Ryukan traditional Japanese room with a large amount of great amenities and I want to come to this place every time I come to Japan though I must let you know if you’re staying in Tokyo it takes about almost 3 hours outside of Tokyo, which you can catch the trains to get to. This place is located in the mountains in Japan and it is very well worth it if you’re looking to relax and to be just Lord by the beautiful site that you will see and experience the custom of traditional Japanese people then you would definitely like to stay here because it was amazing.

The actual private onsen (¥2,200/hr) with river view was shut down, no reason given. There were only 3 rooms booked when we were there. Dinner was good, breakfast fair. The pictures on the Booking.com site do not match reality. This is a very old property and it shows. The rooms need a deep cleaning (dusty &dirty) or better, renovation. The public spaces were ok.

• Oleg (10/5): Great traditional accommodation close to ski resorts - I liked everything! But you should fast at least for a week before checking in - breakfast and dinner are just beyond compare ! My primary goal was skiing, and this location is very convenient to cover nearby ski resorts in Gunma and Niigata. One minor suggestion : the outlets in the room do not have the ground pin, so I couldn't use my laptop charger. I managed to power it from my phone charger, but I'd suggest keeping some extender which has grounded outlets on it, just in case.

We accidentally got off at the wrong train station and they came right away to pick us up which was very kind. We decided to stay longer which turned out to be a mistake since the staff did not offer us more waters or soaps or a change of the tradition clothing. When I did ask for more of these things I was treated as if it was a chore or I was asking too much. That upset me since we decided to stay extra days and didn’t feel welcome Everyone has their own dinning room which is separated with walls- the second part of our stay our room had stacked chairs and was next to the heater. It was unbearable. Again they sat us at the bar table after we decided to stay longer

Being off-season the town was very quiet so the hotel was also very quiet. It would have been more enjoyable with some more travelers to interact with. • Silja (9/5): Superb - Micasa is a traditional japanese ryokan with onsen. The entrance looks a little suspicious, but inside is beautifully decorated and smells really nice. The room was spacious with a balcony overlooking the river. There is no shower in the room, only toilet and wash basin, but there are 3 onsens in the small hotel you can use 24/7 and there you can wash yourself with much comfort. 2 different types of shampoo, conditioner and body wash was provided. After washing you can soak in the hot onsen water with minerals. The ryokan looked very child friendly with baby bath and toys in the onsens and small playing area with toys in the lobby. You sleep on tatami and mattress, no bed. But it was really comfortable. We also had the traditional dinner and breakfast. The food was server beautifully and there was a lot of it. Some were for an acquired taste, but it was a good setting to try natto and other traditional japanese foods. We were really happy with the experience.

Outstanding breakfast and dinner, wonderful onsens (we particularly liked the one in the open air), it's really magical when it's snowing outside, friendly staff. I've read that other guests complained about not having a private shower in their room - we had one. Wi-Fi was ok. Would definitely recommend! Maybe a couple more outlets in the room would have been nice

• Poe (1/5): Absolute worst. Not a Ryokan. - I loved every single hotel I stayed at in Japan, except for this one. Micasa was the absolute worst hotel I had the displeasure of experiencing. From the start, there is nobody at the front desk, with the exception of check-in. So imagine arriving a few hours early, wanting to just leave your luggage with someone for a moment so you can go out and explore the town until check in hour. Sorry - there's nobody there! and a sign in the lobby asking you not to roll your luggage on the tatami mats which is the entire floor of the building, with no place to store the luggage except outside the front door. And nobody around to hold onto or watch your bags for you. So if you want to take a stroll around town waiting for check-in hour, its not possible unless you leave your luggage unattended. I called all the hotel numbers and they don't answer their phones, or their emergency phones when they notice someone is in the lobby waiting for check-in. And its not as though they aren't in the building. Once 3PM rolled around a person magically appeared at the front desk, and the owners magically appeared from the back. Then the surrounding area, once you do get a moment to go for a walk - the majority of stores and restaurants are closed, the surrounding buildings are empty, boarded up and unmaintained. There are no cabs to call in the area with the exception of a few hours in the middle afternoon. So you want to go out for a late night dinner? Well, you will be walking 30+ minutes to get anywhere, and the street does not have a reliable amount of street lamps. Not to mention homeless drunk people loitering right outside the hotel. There is also no security if those people march right in to the hotel after you. Onto the actual room: though you may get a lovely email from booking letting you know your room contains a shower and a fireplace, your room will not contain either of those things! imagine spending an arm and a leg for a room and not even getting a shower. You will have to use the shower in the public onsen. The room I booked came with a yard, but there were literally plastic bags and garbage floating in the water. Also, despite this being a "ryokan", the hotel staff ask you to set out your traditional japanese beds yourself. The room was very dusty and honestly this ryokan felt more like a hostel than anything. The attitude of the owners and staff was extremely disappointing, and I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone. There is much  better accommodations in all of japan, and despite my years of travel Micasa was the only accommodation I was wholly displeased by. I didn't want to leave a negative review, but we did not end up staying the night out of safety concerns and discomfort, and instead swallowed the entire cost of the booking. Micasa wouldn't respond to any of our refund requests, or that of booking.com. We gave them a honest chance to rectify this experience but they were more interested in money than customer satisfaction.
• Brad (10/5): Our entire group of skiers could not have been happier with Micasa. - Breakfast and dinner were large and tasty, the onsens spectacular, staff kind and helpful, and rooms very comfortable and clean. Micasa is also very close to Tenjin skiing (a few minutes drive up the road) and located in a cute town with good restaurants (and even pretty good local beer). Only small issue would be to have more variation in dinners. For two nights its fine, but would recommend a menu rotation that lasts at least 3 and better 4 nights.
• YenDa (10/5): Very happy stay. - First of all, I will have to say this hotel has very minor stinkbug problem just like all the Japanese old style wood structure hotels have. In the winter those bugs will find a way to invade wood houses, but don't worry, they won't bite, and the staffs try to clean them at their best. Beside that, all the other service is top grade compare to the price, people are friendly and try to provide best they have, nice onsen, comfortable and clean rooms, I think I will consider to stay there again.

• Luke (10/5): Amazing ryokan, great onsen and delicious food - MICASA is fantastic. Beautiful property, with really comfy rooms with great views over the river and of the local train line. We were lucky enough that it started snowing just after we arrived, and we had a fantastic view of it from our room. The public and private onsens are both really nice and a good temperature. The food was fantastic. We’re not the biggest fans of kaiseki as it can often be too much food, but the quality and quantity of the food was spot on. The staff are lovely and always willing to help as well. For context, we’ve traveled all over Japan over 14 times now, and MICASA really does stand out from the crowd of Ryokans we’ve visited over the years. Can’t rate MICASA highly enough, and would love to visit again sometime.

Breakfast and dinner food was fantastic and service was english accommodating and very friendly. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to escape the city and have a tranquil few days.
• Maddy (10/5): Wonderful for a chill time as a solo or a couple - Love this property. It’s more on the traditional side but the room was large and the onsens were amazing. The highlight for me was the food. Highly recommend opting in to include the half board. The food was all home made and so good. It felt never ending as they give you around ~13 different types of food. The onsens change for male/female per specific time but I usually had them all to myself which was nice. The hotel is on the smaller side but definitely worth the price. It was beautiful when it snowed! It’s a ~15 min walk from Minakami station and a free shuttle back. You can also reach out to them before to request pickup.

• Anne (9/5): Superb - The staff took incredible care of me while I was staying at Micasa. They went above and beyond what I expected. I would recommend booking one of the rooms with an outdoor bath (I staying in the one with the round soaking tub) and meal plan (dinner was excellent and the menu was very well explained). The onsen facilities are well maintained and very clean. Just to note- the fireplace in the description means heating/cooling in the room rather than an external firepit- the building is made from wood, so it more sense! Free shuttle bus to Minakami station at set times in the morning. It is about a 15 minute walk otherwise through the town or you can go to a slightly closer train station- google maps will inform you. For people travelling by train to from Tokyo a few extra tips about different bus stops etc would be great- the bus stops at The Sun Mall and the hotel is a shorter walk from here than from Minakami station.
