- janrG8794SJ (10/5): Couple lunch at The Portland. - My husband and I had an Anniversary lunch at The Portland on October 3rd. The decor is amazing, quite different and quirky! From arrival at the bar, food, drinks and cocktails the service from all the staff was lovely. Happy, friendly and professional. The food was delicious, we chose from the main menu but a special lunch menu was available. Some of my Chicken Pollo went home with me! Thank you for a special afternoon.

We had dinner in the restaurant which had a good variety reasonably priced meals and drinks. We opted not to have breakfast in the hotel as we thought this was a little expensive at £15 -£20 per person. Overall an enjoyable stay.

The rooms are beautiful, clean with everything you need, had a great night's sleep in a very comfortable bed, food is really good, and the staff team are outstanding, so welcoming and pleasant! Matt is such a great guy, very accommodating, arranged a late check out for us, we had the pleasure of meeting JMK this morning he is fabulous, greeting us at breakfast with a huge smile! Would highly reccomend the Portland and we will definitely stay again! Thank you for a lovely stay.

Toilet cistern... you must press both buttons together to flush otherwise the nouse of water all night long. Instructions would be helpful along with a notification to say milk in fridge. Staff go extea mike to look after you. Bed comfy. Pillows confy too.

- Sp1cey (10/5): Attentive staff, excellent! - Just returned from The Portland Hotel after staying the night for a family occasion. We stayed in the main hotel and the rooms did not disappoint. Very clean, modern and comfortable. The staff were so amazing, welcoming and lovely! We had a wonderful evening meal and drinks. There were quite a few of us, but we were all given excellent treatment. Breakfast in the morning was perfect. Much preferred staying here than the generic cheap, chain hotels...and this is still the same (or less) priced!
- Out-and-about-Wales (6/5): Great Staff, but Hotel Needs Improvement - We stayed at The Portland Hotel for a couple of nights and, while there were positives, a few key issues left us disappointed. Breakfast: The breakfast was very poor, with little choice and certainly not worth the £15 per person charge. We skipped it on the second morning as there are much better and cheaper options nearby. Parking: Charging £10 per night for parking is excessive, especially when free parking is available nearby. Worse still, when the pub was busy, there were no spaces left despite paying for parking. Rooms: The rooms are cheap, but this is reflected in the quality. They were very basic, and ours had a strong damp smell and feel to it. That said, it was clean and well maintained, which we appreciated. Positives: The staff were absolutely fantastic – friendly, welcoming, and always helpful. The bar food was reasonably priced for both quality and portion size, and drinks were also sensibly priced. Overall: The amazing staff and good value bar food are the hotel’s strongest points. However, the poor breakfast, overpriced parking, and damp-smelling rooms mean it’s not great value overall, even if the rooms are cheap.

Bathroom was a little worn, but clean and certainly did not affect the visit. First time we have had food when staying there, and it did not disappoint. Huge portions and tasty. There was live entertainment on the evening we arrived and it was really easy listening whilst eating our food.

- G9184UUmichaell (10/5): Great hotel , food lovely staff - Great hotel, wonderful friendly staff good location to get to numerous places worth visiting in Northumberland , fantastic food with all local produce great selection on the menu, I would recommend the tapas good size portions they are amazing very good value, could not fault it, staff down from management team John and Kaleef are great people very friendl and helpfull nothing was a problem great service from all the staff, will deffinatly be returning, also when weather is good excellent beer garden with bar pizza for outside dining,

- Paul (10/5): - Hotel rooms at the back of a large traditional local stone public house. Very good standard of room. Easy to park car park of a good size. Bus stops directly outside the hotel. 15mins walk to town centre. Check-in though was too slow, using staff that were occupied at the bar. Staff very friendly when eventually the lady arrived. Check-out also suffered by using staff from the pub area, although early in the morning the wait was not long.

- David (8/5): - I stayed at the Portland Hotel for just one night & in the Lodge. The double room with en suite was immaculate & well presented. The kingsize bed was ever so comfortable. The amenities provided at the Portland Hotel for guest's are great. However i simply did not like the fact i did not have an electric shower in the bathroom. I wanted toilet roll & not what was provided by the Portland Hotel. Furthermore i did not appreciate the noise at The Portland Hotel. Finally i would not recommend The Portland Hotel & i would never choose to stay their again.

- JonathanRippon (8/5): Decent standard of hotel with just a few annoyances ! - Good standard of hotel with spacious rooms but with a few annoyances ! Pub and hotel reception is just across the car park should you need food or assistance. Single sheet toilet paper dispenser is really annoying because otherwise it's a pretty decent bathroom. You now have to pay £10 for parking separately (it used to be included, like most places, in the price). It's reasonable value for money even with the parking, so they should include it in the price !
- Laurel (8/5): Overnight Stay - Great for a one night stay but be warned. You have to pay £10 to park your car overnight although I got mine for free due to my Hotels.com membership. Room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. There was a Mini fridge, hairdryer, iron and ironing board and the towels were nice and fluffy (some things you don’t always get). Only complaint was that the heated towel rail in the bathroom was rusty and I couldn’t work out how to turn it on. Would definitely recommend

- kathleenlY3339RY (10/5): The Portland, Ashington. - Dear Y’all, A couple of weeks ago, I returned to my home town, Ashington. I stayed at the Portland Hotel. I was only going to stay there a few nights, but I ended up staying there for the full two weeks. Khalifa the general manager and all his staff were welcoming, friendly…and funny! All the staff went above and beyond the call of duty to make my stay enjoyable and memorable. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was very relaxing. I had several groups of friends and family meet with me there. They were all impressed. I looked so frazzled when I arrived from New Orleans, that Khalifa took one look at me and upgraded my room! Thank you, me darlin’ Khali. My room was clean and comfy, and replenished each day with goodies. There was screened off area in the main building where guests could get coffee and snacks. The parking was convenient and security secured. The next time I come back to Ashington “on me hols”, I will stay at The Portland. Cheers, Kathleen Langan P.S. - annecF4120UV (10/5): Best CARVERY Ever and Definitely Should Not Be Missed YUM… - The best carvery I have ever had and the Yorkshire puddings were ginormous and absolutely fantastic. We went several times when we visited my hometown from Australia. My husband is Aussie and he was absolutely amazed. Food was delicious, staff were amazing and the atmosphere was top. When in Northumberland a definite Hotel for the list.

- Anthony (6/5): Needs improving. - OK place for short notice, not for longer trips. Staff friendly enough. The room I was in had a musty damp smell, although didn't feel or look damp. The pillows were terrible, very stained, so much so you could see it though the pillow cases. One of my pet hates is booking a super king bed then getting 2 beds pushed together, like here, very uncomfortable. Posatives are, free parking, good evening food options. Needs some upgrades here and there.
- Kune52 (8/5): No live music so much better - Stayed in the Lodge for the first time. Room 12. Lovely room. Only complaint was the room must have been designed by a man as plug sockets no where near the mirror when drying hair. Had to use make up mirror resting on headboard. I used to come to the Portland monthly for NSBSL until live music started on a Friday night and I have not been back for 6 months. The live music was far too loud. Thankfully no loud music tonight and there will be none when we stay again in 2 weeks. Live music and pubs do not mix. I hope to regularly visit the Portland once a month in 2025 on a Friday night but not if there is live music.
- James (8/5): Nice stay. - It was a nice stay and the room was comfortable, however, the bathroom smelled musty. Also, there’s nowhere to put wash bags in the bathroom so a shelf would be handy. Parking was included with my booking and there were plenty of spaces available.

- Richard (8/5): - Great hotel with marvellous staff. I was upgraded when i checked in and the room i was given was fantastic. It was a pity i was only in the hotel for one night and did not get the full advantage of my upgrade. I also had free parking, however overnight parking is normally charged by the hotel at £10.00 per night which i thought was quite expensive!

Had a really good singer on the Friday night so good atmosphere. Bedroom was great, spacious and well designed. Lovely sleep! Would recommend.

- Steven (2/5): - The staff were all nice so no complaints there. The room was ok but its clearly needing some investment and cleaning. The bathroom had lots of mould and shower head was so bad we all refused to use it. I manage a facility with showers and there are requirements to prevent legionella that are clearly not being followed. There was also an emergency light with a green led so bright it kept the room illuminated the whole night. Never seen this anywhere else but it kept us up and prevented our 1 year old sleeping.

- Eileen (6/5): - Nothing around the pub/hotel that you can walk to, it’s basically in the middle of a residential area. The rooms are in a block in the car park at the back of the pub so it can be somewhat noisy. Bathrooms are old and in need of refurbishment and there were some stains on the walls and carpets. On the plus side, the beds are huge and comfy and the pub staff were friendly and welcoming. It’s cheap and cheerful!

- Suzykew26 (10/5): Comfortable night stay with amazing food - From check in to check out we received 5 star treatment our twin bedroom was comfortable providing a good nights sleep. We were fortunate enough to stay on a Sunday evening when the restaurant was offering their Italian menu and the food was amazing. There was continental breakfast offered in the room price and this did not disappoint, we were surprised with the choice and quality that was offered to us, along with the offer of a bucks fizz. The staff were very customer focused and pleasant, going out of their way to make our visit one to remember. All in all, an amazing find for a overnight stay and we hope to stay longer on our next visit. Thank you
- SteveGof (8/5): A warm welcome, from The Portland Hotel. - A friendly , welcoming hotel/ restaurant on the outskirts of Ashington. We were welcomed by a member of staff, who after booking us in, showed us to our room, explaining how the hotel/ restaurant worked. We had a long trip to get to the hotel, so decided to eat in the restaurant . This was a pleasant experience, the staff were very friendly and prompt taking our drink orders, and then the food order. Which came out very promptly, best of all very hot and very tasty. The menu was being updated whilst we were visiting and some items that were on the website, were no longer available. But this didn’t detract from the food that was available. Unusually for this type of hotel/ restaurant they don’t serve a cooked breakfast during the week, there is only a continental type. With a good choice of cereal, fruits, meats , cheeses,yoghurts, pasties and breads although this is a separate cost and some might think it’s not worth it. The cook breakfast is available at an extra cost on the weekend and personally didn’t think it was worth it. I had a cooked breakfast an hour after breakfast started and a majority of the food was cold. On the other hand, the Sunday carvery, is a must. (This must be booked in advance)You can have 1 of 3 sized plates, and then fill up on a choice of meat(s) that are tender and juicy, a large Yorkshire pudding, and a great range of vegetables, lovely gravy and a great choice of sauces. The hotel side for us was a large comfortable room, with a comfortable bed and unusually a fridge, which we enjoyed. Our room came with a large TV, iron , ironing board and a fan. Large soft towels that were changed on request and a complementary shower gel/ conditioner in the bathroom. We had a decent complementary tea/ coffee tray in our room, with plenty of tea bags, different types of coffee and hot chocolate. With various types of biscuits. The milk was in the usual little plastic dispenser, and this was stored in the fridge. The whole feel of this place is relaxed, yes it can get noisy in the evening if people sit outside in the pub garden, but it didn’t go on late. The car park is on the tight side and on a Sunday ( carvery) gets full quickly. My down side. There is a £10 per night for the carpark if you are staying over This added an extra £100+ to our bill, The breakfasts costs were a little steep if eating there very day, as charged per person . I know you don’t have to eat there but it is a extra cost. Overall this is a friendly , comfortable hotel / restaurant . All the staff from the cleaners to the front of house staff have been friendly, helpful , and nothing seemed to much effort. Would happily come here again, and have recommended it to friends.
- Robert (6/5): - We lived in Ashington for 50 years before moving away and have used the Portland hotel when returning to visit family and friends. In those 50 years we have never had to pay for parking anywhere in Ashington and the whole town is still free parking. The Portland has now decided to fleece customers by charging £10 for overnight parking In the hotel car park while there is ample free parking all over town. The bar closes at 10pm or earlier if it is quiet even for residents and their guests so making arrangements for meeting with friends is difficult.
- lynnemiller2015 (4/5): Rubbish sleep from poor soundproofed room - We stayed for one night on our return to Scotland. We opted for The Portland as it looked fab and had a restaurant which also had good reviews. There is a £10 charge for car parking which I wasn’t overly happy with given we could have parked free if we were in the restaurant and I think this should have been included for guests staying overnight. We were delighted with our lodge ground floor room after we were welcomed by friendly staff and shown to our room. Bathroom was also modern and clean. We had a delicious meal in the restaurant again served by helpful and friendly staff. Unfortunately it went downhill when we retired to our room. It was very hot and we could only open our window on the very limited latch due to being ground floor. There was no fan or air conditioning so it was very uncomfortably hot. It became apparent there is very little sound proofing in the building and I could hear voices from other rooms, neighbouring room guest coughing, guests in bedroom above walking and also could hear taps and toilets flushing from other rooms. I was woken at 5.30am with the people in the room above getting up/ready and coming down the stairs and rolling their case wheels on the floor. It was the worst nights sleep I’ve had in any hotel and purely on this, I wouldn’t return which is a real shame as it was otherwise lovely.
- Keith (8/5): Good value for bed & breakfast - Reception was good if a little slow to get us signed in. We were at a family wedding which we knew would mean getting back late so looking for bed & breakfast only. Hotel matched our needs. Only issue was the bathroom smelt of cat wee. Since we didn't get back till late no one on reception to sort it out. Pity as I would have given the hotel a higher score.
- Richard (10/5): Lovely first time stay. - Great reception when we arrived, shown to our room, explained about parking and if we wanted meals/drinks in the restaurant, what times and cost was. Room was lovely and large, clean and tidy, modern. Bed comfy, lovely tea/coffee/hot chocolate facilities. Bathroom was nice and clean. Towels were soft. It was quiet of a night time, room was warm and dark so perfect to help sleep.

- Tom (8/5): Hotel trying to be something its not - Room was nice. We were annoyed that we had to pay £10 per night parking and the hotel wanted £15.00 per head for breakfast. We ate elsewhere. Manager was blaming Expedia however Portland web site does not explain the ectra payments either. GM kept calling me Mr Tom instead of Mr Slater or Tom. Saw a drug exchange in car park. Will not be staying again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Would definitely come back. Fab staff - This was a lovely place to stay for business. The staff were fantastic and friendly. The food and drink were great. The only things that could be improved would be getting rid of the dirt and mould on the shower screen and bath edge and changing the shower/bath mixer for a better quality one to control the shower temperature without fluctuation. As the venue attracts a lot of working travellers why not offer an earlier breakfast at 0700 or even 0630. More people might take it up then.

- Derek (8/5): Excellent value for money - Really enjoyed our stay based in a recently built (or upgraded?) annex. Very friendly staff who were helpful and supportive. We ate one night in the hotel and enjoyed a wide ranging choice of menu. Food was served quickly (although we did have to chase the waiter for the dessert menu). Excellent location for touring the area. 10 minutes drive to Morpeth and the A1 (or national rail) and 5 minutes from the coast at Newbiggin. There is a country park on the outskirts of Ashington. This was definitely an excellent value for money trip and we would be keen to return. Newcastle is only 20 minutes away.

- Melanie (8/5): - Great pub with very nice annexe of lovely rooms. A local power cut meant I didn’t get to try the shower or in-room hot drinks and they couldn’t serve cooked breakfast but this was totally outside their control - the emergency lighting worked!

Right from check in we were treated like royalty and our requests were never a problem. We stayed for 3 nights due to my mum having surgery in wansbeck, which is a 5 minute drive from the hotel..You all went above and beyond in your hospitality. A big shout out to Kahlyfa & Tracey for your welcoming and friendliness. The rooms were perfect and had everything we needed and your restaurant was A**+ the food was absolutely delicious. - snorksncat (10/5): 5* service from Khalifa & his staff ! - We stayed at the Portland hotel on Saturday night along with 3 other couples as we were attending a pool competition at the nearby Premier Club. From the moment we stepped foot in the hotel, we were treated like Royalty! Every member of staff went above and beyond to make sure we had a great stay. The hotel is lovely as was the food we had. Would definitely recommend this hotel and wouldn't hesitate in stayign again. Special mention to Khalifa, the hotel manager...he was an absolute star :)

The towel rail in room 3 is without doubt the dirtiest thing I’ve seen in a hotel room in years. Ewww….

- Steven (10/5): Nice hotel with modern clean room - Graet hotel. Pleasant staff, very helpful. Room was modern and recently decorated. Spacious and comfortable although the TV was in a weird place at right angles to the bed? If the bed was turned onto the side wall it wouldn't be quite so awkward to watch but this is just a minor observation. Good choice of food in the bar downstairs. Breakfast was freshly cooked and not buffet style.
- ALAN (8/5): - It was not convenient to dry your hair where the wall outlet was and also the mirror was not in the convenient place. There was also not enough shelf space in the bathroom for all our toiletries. Having said this, it was improved from the last time we stayed at the Hotel.

- Craig (8/5): Excellent customer service - The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The room was pleasant enough, couple of points - limited plugs we only found 1, the door rattled everytime anyone walked past or used the doors in the corridor. Paying for parking is a bit odd but as vip members we got that included. Bar restaurant was very pleasant although music was loud and made conversation hard. Charged 2 different prices for same round ? Overall very pleasant and would be happy to return.
- Sherpa784147 (2/5): Waste of money - The breakfast is over priced you can get a better breakfast at premier in fir half the price Parking is ridiculous to pay 10 pounds a day is day light robbery There is a bit of waste ground which I was told to move my car to the car park by the manager just so he could get 20 pounds for 2 night’s ridiculous Also bedroom are no where near a deluxe double nothing spectacular in them I could get a room in premier inn for a better price with luxury This hotel stay clear of it’s not worth the money Also it is in a unsafe residential run down area highly recommend you look else where to stay Better places to stay in Morpeth
- carol (2/5): - The hotel is in a run down area and it needs a bit of a decor vamp. Aldo having to pay for parking at 10 pounds a day is ridiculous as I was on a spare piece of land outside the hotel . The manager asked me to move no wonder he was getting 20 pounds out of me moving my car Was supposed to be in a deluxe double room if this was deluxe then why would I not have special favours like little soap’s conditioner etc etc Also breakfast was 15 pounds each not worth it No bacon and beans were cold Also the fresh fruit was from a tin terrible
