Guest Reviews
- Dean (6/5): - The room was fine. Small, but the three of us made it work. The bathroom and shower were good. If we were staying in town longer I would have booked something more expensive, but for the price and one night, We're happy.
- Lauri (10/5): - We booked an overnight here while attending a surprise 50th birthday party. We were met by Bruce who showed us to our apartment, we were over the moon with it, it was absolutely 1st class. We finished our night off in The Star Hotel bar downstairs, so was just a short trip upstairs to bed, which i thought would have been noisy tbh, but we never heard a thing. We would definitely recommend staying here, great little place.
- Lee (10/5): - Staff where nice and friendly and the room was clean and tidy.very local for all amenities.would book again next time we go north.
- Andy (10/5): - Hotel is excellent
- Sharlene (10/5): Great Accommodation - Booked this property as an overnight stay while visiting the surrounding areas. On arrival we were greeted by the Bartender who showed us up to our room ( or so we thought). On entering it become apparent that it was actually an apartment and not just a room which we thought we would be getting for the price we’d paid. Accommodation was excellent! Lovely modern Kitchen area, spacious living area, leading to a small corridor to the bedroom with a lovely modern en-suite bathroom and a small dressing room. Complimentary breakfast was also provided which was also something we were not expecting. Breakfast provided was selection of porridge, breakfast cereal, loaf of bread, Pack of butter, jar of jam, pack of chocolate chip cookies, 6 eggs. 2pint of fresh milk was in fridge, along with 6 pack of sausages & pack of bacon. Totally overwhelmed by the selection of breakfast options which we did not expect at all! Refreshment tray was fully stocked also. Great stay and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a stay in Montrose.
- JAGANADHA (10/5): - This hotel is in the downtown and we realized that parking is a challenge. When I went in, met Bruce who owns it and explained my situation. Bruce immediately came out, explained where we should park our car. Since we are from US, he realized how difficult to drive in UK, and personally assisted me until I parked the car. The rooms were very clean, spacious with modern amenities. We like it very much. I highly recommend if u are planning to stay in Montrose.
- christopher (10/5): Excellent stay - Had an excellent stay at the star hotel. The staff were brilliant. So warm ,friendly and welcoming on arrival . Quite being up a side street. But has excellent location being thirty yards from city centre high street. And Forty yards from main bus stops.
- Charlotte (2/5): - The staff were nice and friendly and the room was clean as was the bathroom. No reception and six flights of stairs to our room. Towels were not changed or room even looked at . Seagulls at 430 am on next roof woke us. Breakfast was pitiful although advertised as English, there was no hot options and the carpet was filthy in that area. My wife said she would be very uncomfortable if she was staying on her own. This is not really a hotel, more of a room above a club slash pub. You feel as though you are the only ones there.
- Jurij (10/5): - !
- Aldona (10/5): - We were told, as we had ordered breakfast, that the chef was unwell and was not able to work. So Bruce rang me and asked what we would like for breakfast, that he was unable to do a cooked one, but what else could he do for us. so he provided cereal, yoghurt and fruit and gluten free toast as well as the usual bread, juice, tea and coffee and porridge. He seemed to be on his own and worked very hard. The service and his professional attitude was much appreciated.
- Gordon (10/5): - There is not much to dislike about this property
- George (2/5): Very poor - This was one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. Situated in a back lane just off the high street, it was difficult to get the car anywhere near. Then there was no parking anywhere near the hotel. No reception or staff onsite. I was met by someone who took me up the 3-flights of steep stairs and gave me a room key. The room and hotel in general was very tired and in desperate need of refurbishment. The room door had obviously been smashed in and repaired!! The walls were paper thin, as you could hear everything in rooms on both sides. The breakfast was awful. The night time drunks shouting up at other residents at 2am just topped off a really bad experience. Never again!!
- Paul (8/5): Bargain suprise - good value room, comfy bed with slow to warm but hot shower. good wifi and a bonus of breakfast which I was not expecting.
- Margaret (6/5): - Hotel seemed to have no onsite staff. No reception. There were only 4 guests staying and we were all put on the third floor with no lift. This was difficult as we are an elderly couple. The bar is not open every day so no-one in the hotel at all although there is a contact number in the room. Cooked breakfast was very good, cook was very friendly and also served food. We booked a 2 night stay and the room was not serviced on our second day. We managed to get towels in the evening from the barmaid who was great and went out of her way to help.
I thought the information and reviews on hotels.com were very misleading and I wouldn't have booked had I known what it was like.
- Michael (4/5): No Breakfast - The room was fine but I was informed that breakfast was between eight and ten, when I went down at nine it was all locked up and there was no staff around to help. Not having breakfast spoiled my stay and I had to get breakfast elsewhere.
- John (10/5): - Very well situated in a wynd off Montrose High Street. Staff were very friendly & helpful.
- Stuart (8/5): - Clean room, good shower and lovely breakfast.
Friendly staff and very helpful.
- colin (8/5): - It was clean and warm comfortable bed, the room and en suite all very nice, the public area a bit tired, staff helpful and pleasant, would go back
- Greta (10/5): - Bedrooms/shower room great, rest of the facilities tired.
- Valerie (10/5): - It’s an old property there’s a lot of stairs BUT the room was spacious the water pressure is great Staff carried my case upstairs breakfast is great location is central Entertainment in the bar disco karaoke pool etc value for money 💛
- John (6/5): - Overnight stay as golfing next day. Room 204 was a decent size however no bedroom or bathroom heating. Shower was tiny but decent.
- Brian P (8/5): Monty - Comfortable, central but a lot of stairs if you are not very able.
- Julie (10/5): - Hotel is cleaned daily and offer a generous breakfast each morning
- JOSE CARLOS (8/5): - Bien en general. Lo único negativo es la falta de aparcamiento en el mismo hotel aunque conseguí aparcar a 150 metros.
- pamela (8/5): - staff were really helpful and it was very clean but there was lots of stairs too go up and down and there wasnt a lift for disabled people and no parking
- william (2/5): - My wife was born in kirkaldy she is 79yrs I am 82yrs we were shocked when we were put on the third floor when there is no lift we stuck it out for two days bot the muscles on our legs could not bear it anymore in fact my hip joint is still giving me pain the whole holiday was ruined it was supposed to be her last chance to recap on her family and places to visit
- Daniel (4/5): - On my arrival, Hayden the young gentleman at the bar was extremely welcoming and personable. He took me to my room and allowed me time to settle in. I returned down to the local bar and had some drinks. On my arrival to the dining room in the morning after an eventful night, i was greeted by hostility and insults from the cook Colin. Colin was initially not allowing me to sit in the dining room reporting "You are putting off other guests with the way you are and the smell coming off you with alcohal." I apologised and reported that i did have too much last night, but was just needing some food. He refused to serve me. I sat down and had some apple juice. He then returned to my table and said "What did you order then?" I reported the full english breakfast. He returned a while later and threw the plate down in front of me and walked away. He stood at the kitchen door and watched me the whole time i sat at the table. I had stayed in the hotel earlier in the week and could not fault it. It was excellent. This experience with the cook Colin has put a black mark on my stay.
- Steven (10/5): - What's not to like? Nice clean room with little extras like a bottle of water, and shampoo and shower gel, which are thoughtful and appreciated. Excellent staff, and had a brilliant full Scottish breakfast cooked for me fresh. Would definitely stay here again. Many thanks to the staff for a pleasant stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Hotel is comfortable and clean. Staff really friendly. Great bar and lovely breakfast.
Great value for money.
- George (8/5): Basic but it gets the important stuff right. - Comfortable beds and bedding with a clean well kept bathroom. The public spaces and corridors are a bit glum but the staff are friendly and helpful and the rooms are clean and comfortable. It can get a bit rowdy at the weekends but I slept through it all. You get a decent breakfast including vegetarian option included.
- thomas (10/5): Good stay - Clean comfortable room nice breakfast good value
- Gordon (10/5): - Stayed the one night when looking for a stopover, hotel looks nothing special from outside but made welcome and the room was very good, bed comfortable and shower room nice. My wife asked if they had vegetarian options for breakfast and they went and got vegetarian sausages and oat milk for her.
My only criticism would be cooked breakfast could have been warmer as we like ours really hot.
We would stay again.
- David (8/5): Basic but ok. - Hotel was basic but ok very noisy with people at the pub underneath and sounded like thousands of seagulls about all night we had to ask for extra towel's as they had only left one set there was no milk for brews and the drains stunk on first night
- Darren (8/5): - Staff very friendly
Room clean and bed comfortable
Prices for alcohol very reasonable
Central location easy to get to all required places
- John (6/5): - I was disappointed on arrival to be notified that the bar would not be available Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Also not restaurant facilities. Parking is available at The Argos Car Park, about 100m away.
Had to run the shower for about 5 minutes before any hot water came through. On the last day, the shower would not run hot and not hot water came through the taps in wash hand basin. I had to boil a kettle to have hot water to wash with.
- Nancy (8/5): Bedre komfort enn førsteinntrykket, bra bad og bel - Rimeliig overnatting, bedre opplevelse enn fryktet ved første øyekast fra utsiden. Romslig rom, bra bad/dusj! Helt ok frokost, og sentralt beliggende. Kan anbefales.
- Susan (4/5): - No receptionist, no brewing facilities in the dining room. A notice in the bathroom, in red and black that stated the cold water was not for drinking. No chairs to sit on in the bedroom. There were 2 bottles of water provided on the first day but none after that.
- Valerie (10/5): - I love Montrose The people are great A staff member carried my bag upstairs The room was spacious The shower deserves a mention it had plenty force and hot water It’s very central to everything and it’s all walkable. Also the guy on breakfast is doing a great job enough to set you up for the day and served really quickly 💛 I will definitely be back😀
- Heather (8/5): - The room is spacious for 3 Adults.
Could do with another mirror in the bedroom area.
- Mladen (8/5): - Liked cleanness, bed, bathroom. Not liked noise
- Agnes (8/5): - Small TV too far away from bed
- Neva (8/5): - We had a superb room, top floor, with a brand new updated bathroom, lovely towels. The stairs were steep but in a hotel built in 1765 that was understandable. The entrance was a bit of a surprise but the staff were sincere and hugely accommodating. They are the heart of the business! I look forward to seeing this hotel continue to keep it’s character and continue to work on its check in.
- Janet (10/5): - We enjoyed our stay in the oldest hotel in Montrose! The showers, staff and beds were great! We arrived on a night when the bar area was not open and so had to call for someone to come and let us in and they were there in 5 minutes😊
- Charlie (10/5): - Was greeted and well looked after, very accommodating to our arrival times. Very enjoyable stay, the pub downstairs was a little noisy when arriving back later on but this was totally inaudible from our rooms. Breakfast was great, we felt very looked after and attended to. The stairs were a bit of a challenge with cases but that was the only downside, certainly wouldn't put us off returning in the future.
- Robert (6/5): - The room was fine. Clean and comfortable but the feel is more a room to rent rather than a hotel. The bar was closed and not really a hotel feel.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Poor Quality Hotel - The hotel is very tired and needs a complete refurbishment. When I booked seven months in advance I had requested a room on the 2nd floor, partly as there is no lift, however our room allocated was on the 3rd floor with no option to change. At the time of our stay in August 2023 there is NO wifi available.
- mandy (6/5): - 3 flights of stairs, not good for disabled people. Fight in bar and please called. Police out again on next night. But breakfast was great.
- David (10/5): - Friendly staff, good location, reasonably priced.
Tasty breakfast
- Wendy (10/5): - It was very local to all amenties , friendly and very welcoming and very nice breakfast.
- Jason (10/5): - Thanks great
- David (8/5): Good value for money. - The accommodation was good value for money. A typical mid town old hotel with a bar underneath. Bed was comfortable. We were promised on site parking but there are only 2 spaces. We had to park down the road in the Argos carpark and only free for 2 hours after 8.00am so had to be out by 10.00. Breakfast was okay/good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Close to everything and very friendly
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Liked:clean bed linen, clean ensuite
Disliked:public bar entrance on arrival, no Reception Area, 3 floors to climb after 7 hr journey, smelly, nicotine infused stair carpets (probably from pre-smoking ban), 2 disturbed nights: one through noisy neighbour (thin walls) and second through fire alarm at 4am- we stood outside for about 20 mins, in nightwear. In-room Wi-Fi did not work, Breakfast was limited with no filter coffee, cereals, fruit.
- Paul (8/5): enjoyed - Staying for work in montrose and certainly one of tghe better hotels. Staff lovely and friendly. Would come again.
- James (8/5): Very Enjoyable - I enjoyed my stay at the Star Hotel. The staff were great and 'Dave' carried my 22 kilo bag all the way to the top floor (3 flights, I was only able to help on the first one).
Being that the tap water is labeled as Not for Drinking. I think a 1 to 1-1/2 liter bottle should be included with the room. The small bottle hardly leaves enough for a drink at night, coffee in the morning and still be able to get the blood pressure pills down :)
But I do recommend the Star. I wish I still drank alcohol. I would have enjoyed some good local brew.
- Henry (6/5): - You have to go through the bar to sing in, in my case I was regersted and given my kyes in the bar. Some of my detales are private and I dont think it is profentual to shair them in a public bar
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I liked it here, owners were nice and welcoming on arrival, the bar staff were also a good bunch. The area is like a stereotypical coastal town including hundreds of VERY noisy seagulls so make sure you pack some ear plugs, they’re a MUST. Breakfast room was great, could do with a tv on in the background for me. Good value breakfast. Good value everything really.
- Keith (8/5): Quaint and good value - We found the Star (one of the oldest coaching inns left in Scotland we were told), was absolutely fine for a couple of nights and Montrose is a small but quaint town, with a few things to do over a short stay. The Star hotel is also a pub and one should not be put off by the check-in being in the bar, where you are likely to walk past a few regular local characters. Our room was on the 3rd floor and there is no lift, but David the owner very helpfully carried our case all the way up. The owners are trying to sell up, but the standards are fine, albeit the decor and furnishings need updating. Would we go there again for a short stay - yes we would, so that says it all.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely rooms, helpful staff , however communal areas tired looking
- Phillip (8/5): Clean spacious room - First impressions was that it was run down and in need of some renovation but once showed to my room it was obvious that some money had been spent. The room was very spacious with a large bed and nice bathroom with a good shower which is very important for me. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Parking is limited but you can park for free about 20 yards away. Breakfast was good and cooked fresh to your liking.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Old hotel needing some work - It was not so good as pictures , staff was lovely but hotel is very old and run down
- Amy (10/5): Great little place to stay! - The ladies who checked us in and showed us to our room were both extremely nice. The room looked recently renovated and the bathroom was spacious and was very clean. The room was a good size for two people. The booklet of information was very helpful and the free water and tea pot was convenient. Cozy!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Easy check in and check out, friendly staff and clean, comfy room
- Joe (8/5): So So - Needs a lot of TLC, friendly staff, car parking a issue, overpriced not including breakfast
