Guest Reviews
- Gloria (4/5): - Hotel too rustic if what you are looking for is Resort/Local vibes. No front desk, no restaurant, no bar, easy access to the bay but hotel communal area not well maintained, housekeeping, the minimal (straining the bed, garbage, towels) they turn off the AC when you are not in the room, easy access, walking distance to all the restaurants and bars in the area, 25 minutes from the airport they arrange airport transportation with 24 hours notice.
- julianmH4916FM (10/5): Incredible hotel with excellent reef - The staff were friendly and it felt very private. This is our second time back and there is an incredible reef in the back that you can snorkel. We saw more marine life in the morning around 730 off the back of our hotel than we saw on a paid snorkeling excursion. We loved lounging in the hammocks and the will continue to return as repeat customers. Thank you
- Julian (10/5): Excellent return visit - We had an incredible time at the half Moon Bay resort. This is our second time here and we saw more marine life on the reef off our back porch tha we saw on our paid snorkel excursion. We will continue to return, the staff are excellent. The room is simple and it is great for us, they will also arrange rides to/from the airport.
- Yulia (10/5): Absolutely loved our stay at Roatan Halfmoon Resor - This place is a hidden gem -- cozy, peaceful, and clearly very well taken care of. The rooms and grounds were spotless, and everything felt welcoming and comfortable. We had hot water, good AC, and everything we needed within a short walking distance, including restaurants and dive shops.
The real highlight was the snorkeling -- just steps from the shore, we found vibrant coral and tons of marine life. No need for a boat trip when you have that right out front!
Special thanks to Rene, the owner, who went above and beyond to make our stay smooth and enjoyable. He was incredibly helpful and accommodating throughout. Can’t recommend this place more -- would absolutely come back!
- James (10/5): - This place was excellent. Private beach with a 2-minute walk to the main street. You could not ask for anything better. Hot water and AC work great. The best is the view from the hammocks. Excellent snorkeling right off the property. Highly recommended!
- Karen Marie (10/5): - I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. My favorite was the hammock on the balcony overlooking the ocean. I spent a lot of time relaxing there. The treetops surrounding had small flowers that the hummingbirds frequented. The used to have a restaurant but i was not bothered in the least that it was closed. The owners hooked me up with airport transportation for $30 each way and a private guide, Marvin that took me out snorkeling. The snorkeling was amazing! Everything was within walking distance or $5 water taxi. Woody's grocery is about 2 blocks away for easy access. I would return to say here.
- Cassandra (10/5): - This property is clean and in the perfect location —close to shops and just steps from the water. The staff is amazing!
- Eric Matthew (10/5): - If you are staying on the island and want a tranquil experience this is the resort for you. Most of the cabins on this property are closed along with the restaurant and bar, which makes for the best experience to enjoy the sounds of nature and the overwhelming feeling that this slice of heaven is all for you. That’s right, why have a crowded noisy restaurant and bar where you want to relax? Here at half moon resort you still have the convenience of a two minute walk to all the restaurants and bars you will ever need and still be able to retreat back to your own secluded, very rustic private hideaway. And best of all the owners Renée and a sister are two of the kindest people you’ll ever meet.
- Ann Marie (10/5): - Ideal location, rustic but perfect for snorkeling and exploring Roatan.
- Randall (10/5): - Great place! Clean, close to town, and a mostly private beach. No frills. Basic cabin living. Wifi worked most times. Walk out your door and swim or snorkels. Will stay there again.
- Anna (10/5): Great as always - This was our fourth trip at Half Moon Bay and it was excellent as always! Great snorkeling access, very walkable to the rest of west end, located on a quiet area within west end. Rooms are simple but clean and have everything that we need.
- David (10/5): - The cabins are simple but great. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. The bonus is the water is 20 feet away
- Valerie (10/5): - Can’t wait to go back!
- Sean (10/5): - Great location and a nice owners at a small place struggling since Covid.
- Brian (10/5): - Very quiet, very basic accommodations. Walk out of your room and in the water snorkeling in seconds. It was our own private lodge. Minutes to walk to any kind of restaurant or diving. Would recommend to anyone. The owners are super cool!
- Nicholas (10/5): - Very nice place right on the beautiful water for easy swimming and snorkeling. Short walk to restaurants and bars
- Kiah (10/5): - The room was simple and cozy with clean linens and a wonderful view from the balcony. We were there during Semana Santa and the music from across the bay was incredibly loud. But other than that, we loved this place.
- Tess (10/5): - Really friendly and helpful team, snorkeling just outside your room, and a short walk to the main strip without having to hear it :)
- JUAN (8/5): - The rooms are big, clean, A/C worked well. Bathroom is fine and beds are comfortable. Wi-Fi worked well. The hotel does not have a restaurant or other services, but the location is excellent, quiet and right next to the water and it's very easy to go swimming in the protected bay. It's only a short walk to restaurants, grocery store, dive shops and "downtown" West End. The owners are friendly and helpfull.
- ERIC L (8/5): - Half moon bay property is very bare bones. Do not come here wanting to be pampered. The rooms are very basic. No Tv, just a bed, couple end tables and a small fridge to put your water in. With that being said the Staff was super friendly the grounds were clean, the surrounding were very quite a couple blocks from the main town center. It was nice to decompress and spend time in the Ocean which is just feet away from the resort. The snorkeling was great as the reef you can see from your room and walk right out to it.
With that being said Half moon bay was exactly what I was looking for to get away from work and recharge with the beauty of the ocean at my toes.
- Ram (10/5): - Half moon resort was perfect for us.
Room was basic but clean and comfortable.
Our room was right on the beach - it was very quiet at night with the sounds of waves very relaxing.
It’s within a short walking distance to the main street with many cafes, restaurants and travel services.
- Todd (8/5): Quick 2 night stay - Budget friendly room with a 5 star view and location. Would definitely stay here again.
- Karen (10/5): Beautiful secluded hotel on the bay - I had such an amazing time. The hotel was cozy and the ac worked well. We are right on the bay so we did plenty of snorkleing. The deck was great to dry out dive gear as well. They really take care of this place and i would recommned it to anyone. Hope to visot again soon! Renee is amazing!!
- Anna (10/5): Best place on the bay! - Second time back! Absolutely love it there!
- Marshall (10/5): Excellent snorkeling, great value - Incredible snorkeling right off the shore and secluded portion safe from boats. Off the back porch we saw eel, stingray, parrotfish, flounder, trumpetfish, and countless other varieties. We will stay here when we return. They also arranged transport, could not have been happier
- Amanda (10/5): - Beautiful and quaint property, great location. Directly on the water, swimming access.
- Paul (10/5): Outstanding - Amazing experience, beautiful rustic cabin right in the water, walking distance to a wonderful downtown with excellent choices for food and drinks. You can walk right out your door and into the water for fantastic snorkeling, friendly dive shop right at the end of the driveway. Overall experience 10/10
- Andrew (10/5): - Incredibly friendly staff and clean. Good wifi and excellent location a short stroll to everything but tucked away in a quite area with private beach. Excellent snorkeling steps from your door!
- Sean (10/5): - This was my second stay at Half Moon Resort. The new cabins are fabulous, as are the owners. The location cannot be beat - walk right out of your room and step into the water for snorkeling. Easy walking distance to West End yet private and relaxing. Thanks for another amazing holiday!
- Robert (10/5): - This is a small family-owned resort consisting of cozy cabin-style units which are comfortable and well-equipped with good AC, hot/cold running water, and a small refridgerator. It is showing its age -- if you are looking for a luxury resort, then go to one of the big self-contained resorts in West Bay. If you are looking for a quiet, yet easily walkable (to West End dive shops, stores, and restaurants) place to stay with a fantastic view and access to Half Moon Bay right outside your door, then this is the place.
- Michael D. (6/5): - A
- 488faithp (10/5): Understanding - Honestly i have not had the chance to come to this resort yet as my flight was cancelled. That said i did have repeated texts with Half moon resort regarding flight delays and changed requirements and they were more than willing to accommodate and responded to me in a timely manner. When they learned my flight was cancelled i got a full refund. I do hope i get the chance to visit some day.
- H4606QOandreah (10/5): Quiet and convenient - Our stay here was amazing start to finish. It is in a fantastic location if you want to be close to the action in West End but still in a secluded area. Its only 5 minutes away but at night when all the bars and restaurants are loud you can sleep soundly across the bay. Unfortunately the restaurant and dive shop weren’t reopened yet since COVID, but Rene was always in the main building and let us boil water for ramen soups, and borrow some dishes for our early morning cereal breakfasts before going scuba diving every day.
If you like to snorkel the spot just in front of the rooms is well known for being a great spot to see all kinds of marine life including octopus and eels.
The rooms are simple and clean. We had a mini fridge, fan and AC. The beds were comfortable and we slept very well. The hammock on the front porch of the room got used a lot for some mid-afternoon naps. :)
- Joseph (6/5): - The view is fantastic with good snorkeling in the bay. The rooms are good sized and rustic. If you are coming to stay here expect the bare minimum. The sheets are stained and the towels have holes in them. There is virtually no room service. We got it twice and it consisted of sweeping the room and making the bed. We had to ask for room service. We will stay somewhere else for the same money.
- Z4354ZKgabrielleb (10/5): Pictoresque honeymoon! - Rene kindly upgraded us to the king room without extra charge for our honeymoon! The view is like a postcard, and the water and coral right outside the resort were extremely pleasant for snorkeling and swimming. With the iron shore and not much traffic noise it was a relaxing place to be. We did not realize the eco divers is still closed, which was disappointing, however, there are many affordable snorkleing rentals nearby.
- FLAVIA (10/5): - This property is perfect for snorkeling and relaxing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Hidden treasure - Great little place, out of the way and on the water, yet the main street with restaurants and shops and dive centres are a couple minutes walk. The resort's dive centre appears to be closed now, but there are lots of nearby options on the mainstreet. Small private beach, shade available, nice snorkeling or swim. The restaurant on site is also closed, but Loreta's, and a baleada (like a breakfast wrap) takeout, are near, and you can request a fridge for snacks. Bottled water is provided to refill your water bottles. We were in one of the rustic cabins, nothing fancy, facing the water and beach, and it was perfect for us. There are some larger and newer cabins a well. There was AC available, but we never turned it on as there was always a nice breeze at night. The surroundings are like a small nature reserve, with hummingbirds, woodpeckers, small deer, and a couple of the endangered Agouti regularly crossed the property. Owned by Hondurans. On Departure day, I had left a book in the room for their book exchange, but without an explanatory note, so the owner, René, thought I had forgotten it, and contacted me to make arrangements to deliver it to the airport. I thought that was very thoughtful, Thank you René! We would definitely stay there again.
- Doris (10/5): - I've stayed here several times. West End shops and restaurants are just minutes away on foot. The snorkling at the resort is great and I love the quiet location.
- Claudia (10/5): - Is so amazing because super close for snorkeling, swimming, and scuba diving. No restaurant service.
- mark (10/5): Great value, can’t beat the location - Modest units but amazing location and friendly service. One of the few places that has quick access to snorkeling on the reef, just steps from your door. Beautiful sunsets over the water.
The restaurant is closed but Loretta’s is a 2 minute walk for breakfast, or 4 minutes to Yahungreh. Several dive shops within a 5 minute walk.
Would definitely stay there again. Thanks Rene!
- leslie (10/5): - Beautiful private beach front property and premier snorkeling. The owner Rene was very friendly and helpful. Cabins are rustic but clean. Unfortunately bar and restaurant were closed.
- RUBEN (10/5): - I love it Half moon resort. Very good location, the best views of Roatan, very clean , ecological hotel and very friendly staff .
I’ll highly recommend it!
- Leah (10/5): Could have stayed longer - Beautiful place. Quaint little beach cabins with a nice reef to snorkel. The owner is very hospitable and friendly. I will definitely return.
- Charlene (10/5): Safe place for female travelers - I just want to rave about this place! Lovely little cabin on the beach, lots of amazing wildlife and the owner is really great! I had an issue with a male that was traveling in our group and needed to get away from him quickly. They have gone out of their way to ensure I not only got away but that there was no place for him here. I've felt very safe here and can't say enough good things about what they've done to help me.
- Liam (8/5): - Nice location right on Half Moon Bay
- Cristian (10/5): - This property it's fine for our purpose of the trip
- shannongunter (6/5): Not so great this trip - Renee didn’t tell us that eco divers and the restaurant aren’t open yet. Had to go find a dive shop quick. I hope they’re able to open up and clean it up to get people there. We Had to go get water from him, no water in the room this time. Needs trash cans by water to help people clean up after themselves.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It is a beautiful place. The view is lovely. The staff is wonderful. Would most definitely stay again. Plus Sue took great care of me.
- Gregory (8/5): - I had a great visit here. Stayed lots of time on the hammock, snorkeled outside in the clear bay and enjoyed breakfast by the water.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good value for your money
- CHRISTOPHER (10/5): Beautiful private water side location - Our group of 12 had the place pretty much to ourselves and could walk to just about everything, including water and land taxis. Our stay included breakfast overlooking the ocean too! Awesome place to stay on a budget!!
- T3203HPjasonh (8/5): Roatan 2021 - Rene, Michael, and Sue worked very hard to accommodate our group of 13. Rooms were cleaned every day, breakfast every morning was awesome, and the staff kept our extra ice in the freezer! The only problem was that the wi fi went down for a couple days, but it got fixed.
- KeoneL (10/5): Amazing location - This is our second time staying here and Renee, and his crew do a great job! The accommodations being right on the water are spot on, and you’re not even a simple 3-5 minute walk to Sundowners and the heart of west end....nice and relaxing...stay with these guys you won’t be disappointed!
- michellehI9801HX (10/5): Amazing vacation - We were lucky enough to get "stranded" at Half Moon Resort during the Corona virus pandemic. Believe me, being stuck here at this resort was perfect! The cabins were extremely clean, rustic and quaint. Breakfast was always delicious and overlooks the beautiful bay. Our beach was raked every morning and no visitors were allowed as it's a private beach, which was nice. It's close enough to town so you can walk everywhere but if you did need something, the staff was always willing to bend over backwards for us. And speaking of the great staff, every one of them was so nice, always had a smile and made us feel at home every minute of the day! When we were quarantined and asked to stay off the streets, the staff even went out of their way to drive around looking for different dining options for us! This is a place we can't wait to go back to! Thanks again to all of you at Half Moon Resort...we'll see you soon!
- chuckn267 (6/5): Good Value close to West End also right on the waters edge. - We have stayed at Half Moon Resort twice, It is walking distance to West End where there are restaurants and shops. The resort also has a restaurant with good food. Service was good. We tried to book a third trip to Roatan ad it was booked. The rooms are comfortable but last time we were there the room, shower needed some repairs. The local vendors that walk through the grounds however were quite annoying especially the Massage lady. Rates were about $75 a night.
- Bruno (8/5): - Nice area to snorkel in. Good quiet area. Cook, housekeeping and waiters were friendly and accommodating This is not a place to stay expecting dinner. We had breakfast every morning and few lunches.convenient to walk to many other restaurants and shops.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good basic accommodation right on the beach - Spent three nights there, decent but rustic cabin right on the beach. No sand as such but deck chairs available and the cabin had a hammock. Snorkeling right in front of the hotel.
A short walk into bars and restaurants in West end
- kenk429 (10/5): Peaceful Oasis - Beautiful, quiet, and tucked away in a safe and cozy location. Wooden shiplap interior with ocean front balconies on a private beach. Absolutely serene. Extremely clean and bug free.
You are a very short walk to the main strip, with restaurants and shops and the hustle bustle of the crowds.
Renee and Matilda also run an on site restaurant and bar, and along with their staff they are extremely kind and accommodating. The on site bar/restaurant closes early, which is a bonus as there are no drunken shenanigans or noise.
You may here acceptable levels of chatter from the on site dive shop or restaurant patrons, but I assure you it is only during working hours and is never excessive.
- Navigate44840434922 (10/5): Rustic, Tranquil and Amazing - I stayed at Half Moon Resort for a full week as part of a SCUBA trip. I had a cabin to myself, right in front of the dock. The experience was sublime.
Before I go any farther, I want to emphasize this is a rustic resort. I had air conditioning, WiFi, coffee, refrigerator, and great service. But I wasn't pampered, nor did I want to be. Staying at the Half Moon is a few steps up from camping, but with amazing ambiance.
The food and drinks were excellent, made better by the attentive service. We SCUBA dived with Eco Divers (right on the property) and also snorkeled off the small beach. The West End is less than 5 minutes away on foot. Each night, I slept like a baby.
I highly recommend the Half Moon Resort and I will definitely be back!
- Sharon (10/5): - Half Moon Resort really delivers exceptional VALUE for the price.
The LOCATION can't be beat. It's right on Half Moon Bay and all rooms have a waterfront view. It's easy walking distance to everything in West End but off the main street. so it's tranquil.
Plenty of ACTIVITIES are available right at the resort. You can snorkel along the seagrass bottom and see a variety of life — starfish, conch, tropical fish, and other marine animals (a moray eel that lives under the dock next door!) Glass bottom boat tours leave from the resort's dock. And the Roatan Institute of Deepsea Exploration next door is one of two commercial operations in the world that offer the general public submarine expeditions that go deeper than the 120 feet that can be reached scuba diving.
Best of all for divers, there’s great dive operator onsite offering 3-5 scheduled boat dives per day. And EcoDivers is not only eco-friendly -- they offer reef restoration dives and a program to "pay with plastic" collected on one of their organized beach cleanups -- but it's economically friendly to your budget as well, offering a discount to Half Moon Resort guests.
Other AMENITIES include a restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch daily and offers free coffee and purified water (from a bubbler, not plastic bottles) to resort guests. Showers are hot and all rooms are air-conditioned. For a small fee, you can have a mini-fridge added to your room (recommended).
Last but definitely not least, the SERVICE is terrific.
- explore961 (10/5): THE place to stay in Roatan - The LOCATION of Half Moon Resort can't be beat. It's right on the water of Half Moon Bay and all rooms have a waterfront view. It's easy walking distance to everything in West End but off the main street. Therefore it's quieter and peaceful so you can relax without the bustle of West End locations along the main street (which are also separated from the water by the road and public beach).
There are plenty of ACTIVITIES available right at the resort. You can snorkel from a centrally located access point with a few steps leading down to the water. Snorkeling there along the seagrass bottom you'll see a variety of life such as starfish, conch, tropical fish, and other marine animals. There's even a moray eel that lives under the dock next door! You can easily swim out to the iSoar (not eyesore) sailboat moored nearby, which has been retrofitted for recreation with a dive platforms and rock climbing footholds. (The kids we saw playing on it looked like they were having great fun.) Glass bottom boat tours leave from the resort's dock. And the Roatan Institute of Deepsea Exploration just next door is one of only two commercial operations in the world that offer the general public submarine expeditions that go to depths far beyond the 120 feet that can be reached by non-technical scuba diving or in tourist subs that take non-divers to the same depths that recreational divers can reach.
Best of all for scuba divers, there is great dive operator located onsite that offers 3-5 scheduled boat dives per day that depart right from the Half Moon Resort dock. Moreover, EcoDivers is not only eco-friendly -- e.g., they offer reef restoration dives and a program by which you can "pay with plastic" collected on one of their organized beach cleanups -- but it's economically friendly to your budget as well, offering a discount to divers staying at Half Moon Resort.
Other AMENITIES include a restaurant that serves both breakfast and lunch daily and offers free coffee and purified water (from a bubbler, not plastic bottles) to resort guests. It was so convenient we ate there once a day (alternating between breakfast and lunch) and every dish we tried was excellent. Showers are hot and all rooms are air-conditioned. For a small flat fee, you can have a mini-fridge added to your room (recommended). Reliable airport transfers can also be arranged at a reasonable cost. There's also a safe available at the desk for securely storing valuables such as extra cash, passports, etc.
Last but definitely not least, the SERVICE is terrific. Your hosts René and Matilda make sure you have everything you need. (René even loaned me a bottle opener for the week to use to open the beer I was keeping in my room fridge.) It's a family-run operation -- René is the son of the owner -- and they take pride in their business. All of the staff were friendly and helpful, especially Sean and Renny, the waiters in the restaurant, and Sherry who freshened our room daily and made sure we had water if we'd run out.
The only minor issue for me -- not a general complaint, I imagine -- was that the beds were a bit too soft for my liking as I'm used to a firmer mattress.
In sum, Half Moon Resort really delivers exceptional VALUE for the price. With it's great location, activities, amenities, and service (and with cushy beds being the only slight minus), I can enthusiastically give Half Moon Resort a five-star rating and highly recommend it to other travelers. Not surprisingly, several of the other guests while we were there are regulars. I will definitely stay there next time I'm in Roatan -- and I'm already looking forward to going back.
- Connector781173 (10/5): Scuba Diving Roatan location location location - The property location is spot on and near everything great for West End. Dive shop is onsite, tasty breakfast every morning. Very Clean and comfy in the newly constructed rental with comfy beds and friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Liked the lounge chairs out front . Hammock was nice. Very little storage space for our belongings. Needs more places to hang and dry our wet clothes, towels, etc. More hangers needed for clothes rod too.
- JILOA (10/5): Best Location in West End! - Away from the din of the clubs, but a short walk into this town filled with interesting shops & restaurants to please even the fussiest foodie, this resort is a serene & exotic snorkeler’s paradise! THANKS, Matilda & René...you are winsome hosts! I’ve stayed at other places in West Bay, but Half Moon Bay is my favorite spot for detox & spiritual renewal!
- fredw495 (10/5): Great Location on Roatan - Rene was so wonderful on all correspondences, every question was completely answered in great detail.
We loved the location it was so close to everything and a 4 minute walk to the Round-a-bout which is the starting line to all of the fun!!!
- RoatanBaby (10/5): Summer 2017 and 2019 - Stayed for two weeks the first time in 2017 and absolutely fell in love! Went back in July 2019. Rene and Matilde are amazing, as well as the staff. You are steps away from snorkeling and can swim out to the iSoar. Very convenient location near shops and nightlife, and you can take a water tax to West Bay.
- WanderinHumanitarian (8/5): Everything you need for a nature retreat - Basic bungalows on fantastic plot of land tucked away from main drag of West Bay. Beautiful views of the bay and unbeatable house reef! Tons of fish and marine life just steps away from your door. I saw sea turtles and lots of different species of fish. Never ate at the restaurant so can't say anything about the food. Staff could not have been more helpful and friendly!
- 61iv_np (10/5): Just next to more living part in the island and still quiet and lovely place - A few blocks from the rush night action in West End, Quiet place rooms surrounded by trees, a nice spot for snorkeling. There is a dive center inside the hotel, friendly guys very pro. (EcoDivers) No restorant service just rooms. This is better so you can have lunch and dinner in many places near by.
- pamelacharris (10/5): Amazing - But please don't come- I want to keep this place a secret- all to myself (and a few thousand others). Accommodation is minimal, but clean, with AC and clean sheets every day. Hot shower, nice restaurant with good breakfast and lunch/cocktails. But the best part? mere steps away from some wonderful snorkeling- I stayed a week and it wasn't long enough!! Management couldn't be more kind, thoughtful and helpful. I'll be back!
- Joelle257 (10/5): Wonderful stay - My sister and I stayed here for a week . What a great place .Our room was clean and the beds are comfy. There was always hot water . The staff are very good. The food was great too. I just loved the fish fingers . The snorkeling in front of the resort was good . We loved the fact that we could walk to town. . We also rented a car and there was lots of parking. We rented a fridge for $20.00 the week which was good. I can't wait to return
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The property was in an ideal location, walking distance to dive shops and many restaurants. Quiet location and friendly staff
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Due to researching and reading reviews, Half Moon Bay Resort was exactly what I expected in regards to the facility so I cannot say one bad thing about this place!
