Guest Reviews
- Eleanor (2/5): - Complicated check in which relied on app even though there was a member of staff on the premises. Finally we got to our room and it stank and looked dingy. Popped our head into the on-suite whic was tiny and cramp. Immediately booked another hotel and left.
I usually read the reviews but this time I was in a hurry. If I'd read the reviews I wouldn't have booked.
Also don't rely on the parking as there are only 4 spaces and the street is rammed. We had to pay for parking in the station carpark. The only benefit is its close proximity to the station and the see.
Not only will I never book this hotel again, I won't book any hotel in the chain.
- david (8/5): - Very good service and very comfortable, and spotless
- D (2/5): Discusting - We arrived at this hotel and we were told we had been cancelled But we were not CANCELLED?
We were then told if we want another room we would have to pay again!
We will never use this company again, how whole weekend was ruined
- Titi (4/5): - Thanks
- Sarah (2/5): - What a rip off. It was more like a hostel.
than a hotel. It was dirty, noisy and it smelt.
- Gordon (2/5): - Considering my reservation was "cancelled", but "luckily they had a free room", and I still haven't had my "cancelled" payment back, I think it's fair to say they scammed me out of my initial payment. Do not recommend.
- Linda (4/5): No, just no. Worst hotel I've been in this year. - The good; the location. That's it.
The bad; double bed and sofa bed beyond terrible. Friend and I woke up with pain every morning.
No toiletries in bathroom except for a small bar of soap.
Had a kitchen but no cutlery or dishes.
No response from hotel via WhatsApp chat and message is still not read 3 days later.
Urine stains on sofa bed (photo below)
Hotel doubles up as homeless hostel which is silent on the app. My female friend was pestered outside by a couple of residents who were either very high on drugs or very drunk and this was at 4 :30 pm.
It's a doss house trust doubles up as a hotel when rooms are free is my guess. First time I've felt safe in an area but not in the hotel. Just avoid and save yourself the pain of staying here.
- Cory (8/5): Good for single person budget - Overall good for the cost. TV with apps, nice shower, clean etc however bed was very basic, shower overfilled quickly, and walls thin and being on ground floor it was noisy when people entered. Very limited parking outside, was lucky to get a free space two streets away. Fine for single person, would not recommend as a family or couple
- Leo (10/5): Good value - Clean and efficient.
- Jonathan (6/5): Very disappointed - Had problems with automated check in after a long drive from Colchester where I had just run the Paras 10 event so needed to soak in a bath
There wasn’t one and there were issues with the shower the room was cold and tiny not worth the money!
- Simon (8/5): - Very close to Westliff station - it was fine for me but I know my wife would have wanted the room & en--suite to be refurbished/upgraded
- Catherine (4/5): - Truly awful stay, paper thin walls could hear next room breathing, body hair on teaspoon so didn’t dare use tea making facilities, unstable and uncomfortable bed that desperately needs replacing
- phil (6/5): - We had to ask for extra pillows, it felt like we were being a nuisance. No breakfast, no vending machines, no staff.
- Stuart (4/5): Don’t take your wife - Shabby accommodation, not the cleanest as per the pics. But at least the bed sheets were clean. Offered no breakfast options. But met the duty manager and she seemed nice. TV and hairdryer out of order too.. Need a code to enter the building and your room so make sure you save this or you will struggle to enter.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Basically expensive below par accommodation - Booking in via web at front door took forever due to limited phone signal. No staff on site. Only 1 tea and 1 coffee in room. Shower cubicle so small I wasn't able to use due to back issues. Basic but expensive for the standard of room
- D (2/5): - First and foremost i didn't stay there as the manager was very rude and his staff, they took my money and then kicked me out, telling me to go rent somewhere else, reason being is because i asked them questions on why they needed my passport
- Rhys (2/5): Absolutely awful! - This is the worst hotel I have ever been in. The light in the cupboard is about to fall off the wall, and doesn't even work. The shower doesn't even get hot. Dust everywhere! Bed is falling apart as lots of screws are either loose or missing. Doors about to fall off of cupboard. Desk is in awful condition. Screw hanging out of wall for no reason at all. Shower system is not even finished, it's hanging out of the wall and silicone splattered all around it. All skirting around top and bottom of wall looks like it's about to break. The coffee smells awful. Dirty tissues on top of bathroom ceiling. The TV is almost ancient and doesn't work, signal is Awful! WiFi doesn't even connect. Hairs/pubic hairs in beds and shower cubicle. I would be fully expecting a full refund for the condition of this room! Will not be returning!
- Nicholas (4/5): Not the best - Was a smelly room had to spray deodorant to mask it, chair was filthy no parking
- magdalena (6/5): get what you pay for - This hotel is a great location for exploring the areas around Southend. It is basic and you get what you pay for. The only annoying thing was that the shower was either too hot or too cold - which meant that we were not able to shower properly during our 2 day trip
- Amina (8/5): - Cook
- Joseph (8/5): - I only stayed few hours overnight leaving by 0600 am.
- domas (2/5): no hot water no heating - avoid at all costs no hot water no heating
- PAUL (2/5): Horrible stay - Old disgusting room ,freezing cold, inadequate heating, inadequate bedding we were freezing overnight. dull, dirty curtains, small room would never stay there again 0 out of 10 inadequate parking hated it.
- Ben (2/5): - Horrendous hotel bed was shocking not even suitable for a 1 night quick stay AVOID sleep in your car before booking here.
- Darrell (2/5): - Where do I start? Unless you are desperate, never stay here. There were problems with this hotel before I even arrived as there were issues with the check in information. The hotels position was that I was not going to be allowed to check in but that I could not have a refund! After 11/2 hours arguing over the phone with the hotel and Expedia, their position had not changed. Then for no obvious reason I was given the check in codes 10 minutes before check in anyway!
When I checked in I was allocated a code to access room 15. Upon entering the room, somebody was already in the room, a ‘permanent’ resident apparently. I was then given room 4 by a member of staff which was a downgrade on the room I paid for but at no point has anybody offered to refund the price difference. I am not a snob when it comes to hotel rooms but parts of the room were a disgrace. The bedside table was absolutely filthy as was the table and chair, which is probably a week or two away from breaking its so flimsy. The bed wasn’t too bad but creaked and groaned like mad if you moved even an inch. That and I had the pleasure due to the thin walls of having to listen to the room next door watching pornography in the night. An experience I will never be repeating!
- Mathieu (2/5): - Well over priced an the self check in is a pain in the arse cuz they dont send you all the numbers till you realise, you havent got all the numbers
- Verified traveler (2/5): I will be getting a refund - Currently trying to get my money back, room codes did not work and was left outside for over an hour two nights in a row while my medical equipment was stuck inside the room and when I got in contact with them they seemed to not even be able to find my booking or help me
- Gary (10/5): - Requested an extra pillow and it was given to me within the hour. Friendly staff. Clean room. Very close to train station and also to promenade. Fantastic location. Would highly recommend.
- Lee (6/5): - Stayed before and good place and location. Just faults on the quality of beds and shower filled up like a bath and broken door.
- Jack (2/5): Refund - Awful didn’t even stay want a refund . Bathroom full of mould plug in fresheners everywhere with big lights on like a hostel
- Shantanu (8/5): - I paid in 2 days advance, but i didn't received door keys/ numbers even after when i reached. I have to wait outside then i called the call center and arranged the keys. Chat was not replied back.
Also tea and milk sachets were replaced only once, although my stay was for 3 nights
- Sarah (8/5): - Great location we stayed overnight for the carnival and fireworks. Needs a bit of an update the decor is not grest and we didn't realise we needed to take our own towels
- Adam (4/5): - The shower in the room wasn't working for the whole week, it was fixed on the last day of the stay in the evening. I was told I need to shower in a shared bathroom.
- Martin (8/5): - Basic room , but good value and clean. Only problem was poor pillows
- Mitali (6/5): - Excellent Location and Good Service
I recently stayed at the OYO Devine Beach Hotel in Westcliff, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. Here's a detailed breakdown of my stay:
*Room*:
The room itself was fine—clean and comfortable, with all the basic amenities I needed for a short stay. The bed was cosy, and the room was spacious enough to move around comfortably. While it wasn’t luxurious, it was certainly sufficient for a budget-friendly hotel.
*Service*:
The service was good as well. The check-in was so smooth as they have sent us the code for the main gate as well as the room. The staff were friendly, I have not see any person to assist with any queries or needs. But they have WhatsApp chat service on 24*7 for any type of help and query. I did not have any requirement of these, that's why I did not chat as well. For check-out, it was smooth as well.
*Location*:
The standout feature of this hotel is undoubtedly its location. It’s just a one-minute walk to the Sea beach, which is fantastic if you're here for some seaside relaxation. The beach offers plenty of activities, including amusement rides, arcades, and lovely walks along the shore.
For one night, it was nearly 70 pound which is really high
- Bulent (6/5): - Not have park and no service reception
- Marc (4/5): - Very overpriced for such a basic room.
Good location but poor conditions
- Sharon (2/5): - Area was quaint however to many care homes an rehab facilities within the street. Very noisy. Party all night in room below an people talking outside at 2am in the morning. Some of the rooms are residential an one person was meeting there probation officer outside in car park when we arrived. Checked out a day early wouldnt stay here again. For younger party people.
- Adam (8/5): - Is ok
- Adrian (10/5): Was great from start to finish.will do it again - First class
- JOHN (2/5): - There were several unsavoury types staying there. Did not feel safe
- suhieb (6/5): - No shampoo, very early checkout , expensive for the experience
- Kathryn (6/5): You pay for what you get! - The bedding and towels were clean and the access/check in process worked really well. The property itself was a bit of a dump but you get what you pay for so no complaints
- Anna (10/5): - property located in
a quiet residential area located at 20 minutes walk from town centre .property is a bid dated and could do with a bit more cleaning .no much water coming for the shower ,bed and sofa bed very uncomfortable and we had a cockroach visiting while we were there .we found a trap
under the sink in
toilet therefore business must be aware of issue.
not many choices for a family room in the area especially at last minute but we won’t return in this hotel
- Azhar (8/5): Perfect location - I stay with OYO regularly when I visit Westcliff, they have not dissatisfied .
- Anthony (6/5): Basic - Good value but very basic, bathroom (in single room at least) not nice, and struggled to get wifi in the room (and no signal in that room either); entering codes to access quite fiddly.
- Tom (8/5): - Very reasonable for the cost
- Georgi (10/5): - Wonderful
- Natalie (2/5): - It was horrendous. Like a very bad bedsit. Bed was vile and needed to be thrown out I also got bitten by I’m assuming bed bugs. If we didn’t have to be in the area the next day we would have left immediately.
- Daniel (4/5): Not a fan - Not a fan of keyless entry systems. Guess im old fasgioned as i like a key!!
The bed in my room was awful, thinnest mattress ive ever slept on and the the noisiest bed frame that made silly noises every time i moved in the night. Poor nights sleep equals a grumpy middle aged man
- Ashley (2/5): Dirt - Arrived and after getting last space for parking( only 4 available) I used access codes to get into the property and then my room. The room had not been cleaned from previous guest and obvious signs bed had not been remade either. I complained and was given another room only to find rubbish in that one also. Disgusting
- Stacey (6/5): - Cheap and basic but fine for an overnight stay
- Natania (6/5): A stopover to visit friends, a bit chilly but ok. - This was a stopover to visit friends and I needed to be near them and the sea! The accommodation was easy to find and although there were parking spaces there that I could have used earlier in the day - at night there were none (so I was glad I'd left my car near my friend's house after our day out together. She gave me a lift there in the end, owing to the bitter cold that night (-2 outside).. I couldn't easily figure out how to enter the door code as it was a flat smart screen surface. I simply couldn't see the little hand written note below it in the dark saying how to enter codes. In the end, a hotel lady appeared to let me in. I explained I couldn't see the tiny note. First off, I made my way to the room I was supposedly allocated. It was a bit of a shock, as I entered a room that was clearly in occupation. Fortunatley no one was actually in the room, but their stuff was on the chairs and clearly this was someone's paid for room! I had to return downstairs, but this time was given a top floor room up in the garrett. This was ok and roomy enough, but rather cold. The heating was barely on! Fortunately I had bought myself a snug blanket top. I mentioned the cold to a lady on my exit at checkout the next day - she said I could have had an extra heater in there. I just wasn't sure about going back down again given the proprietor was apparently ready for bed and I was a bit concerned about leaving my room, after my earlier experience. Reasonable stay however.
- john (6/5): Review - Place is a bit run down and could do with a revamp. It was clean and well located for us.
- Amanda (2/5): Room not to description. - Room was not even close to the photographed example, bathroom was a closet with a toilet and a shower in it and the sink was literally in the living room. Did not see a single member of staff during my stay to discuss the matter and when I tried to phone the hotel I was met with a dialler which would not connect me to a human being. I will never be going near an OYO hotel again in my life.
- Suzanne (10/5): Ok for short stay - Hotel is basic but clean, reception had a damp smell, but room was clean and warm, only stayed for one night and didn’t spend anytime in the room, room had a fridge but it was noisy, bed seemed comfy enough,
- Martin (8/5): Basic, clean, affordable. - If you are looking for basic, affordable hotel for an overnight stay, this place ticks all the boxes.
Almost adjacent to Westcliff Railway Station and the Seafront and just a short walk (or train ride) to Southend itself.
Not sure I would want to stay here for a longer visit, but it certainly served its purpose for my brief overnight stay.
- Heather (6/5): Overnighter - Comfortable bed quite
Don’t like having to access both room and entrance via a code
Prefer maybe code to get into building key for the room
Staying overnight for a party
Not suitable if it was business
Table chair very basic but not applicable to us. Good price for an overnighter
- Jade (2/5): - Worst hotel ever is more like a hostel the window was broken and wouldn’t close the carpet had stains all over it absolutely terrible nothing like the pictures on line
- Andrew (6/5): - Ok for a cheap night over but even then £80 was too much for this. Kettle supplied but only water was from the bathroom and no notice if it was drinkable. Walls had been painted white and grey but I think they used the same roller for the grey after putting on the white. Do not attempt to put in the 9 digit room door code though if you have been out drinking :)
- Shanice (2/5): - The lady at reception was lovely when we arrived. My phone which held all the booking information was not working and so she helped get the information for our room etc. However, that is where the positive review ends, as the room looked as though it hadn’t had a good clean in quite some time. The bathroom needed re-grouting as well as a good clean. Whilst the carpet was dark, you could tell that it held a lot of dirt and no doubt bacteria so I didn’t let my feet touch it. We were put on the top floor (didn’t see an option to choose the floor) and so my mum struggled with her arthritis to go up all those flights. The internet which was included in the price, did not work once thankfully we had mobile data that we could rely on. We paid a little over £120 but it was only worth half that amount. No one got a good sleep and we didn’t feel comfortable taking a full shower.
- Emma (8/5): Quiet Area, Efficient Hotel - This hotel is exactly what it looks like, cheap and cheerfull. On the edge of central Southend in Westcliff, nice and quiet about 20 minute walk to the amusements.
Room was really warm, but the staff had the windows open beforehand and supplied a fan.
Refilled all the room supplies when we asked and were really polite. Bathroom could have a face lift with the sealant needing to be replaced. We were part of a group and all three rooms were of the same standard.
Would stay again.
- Susan (8/5): - Very clean bed was a bit small bit noisy outside but overall very good
- Carol (10/5): Excellent - Hotel was lovely, friendly staff always there to help, quick check in and check out and very clean and comfortable.
- Sam (8/5): Good - Very good for the price
- Samira (8/5): - I like it I'll go back again definitely.
- Paul (6/5): Paul from kent. - Comfitable, basis, domewhere to lay your head at the right price,
- Verified traveler (4/5): Unhappy stay - Room clean, staff friendly. But room so very cold, had a leak in bathroom ceiling, extractor fan banged constantly when the wind blew.
- Janice (10/5): Spotless and friendly - We were welcomed warmly and made to feel comfortable
The room was basic but had everything we needed
The room was absolutely spotless - bedding and towels were impeccable and every where was cleaned to a high standard
As a cleaning business owner I look in the non obvious places for dirt and found none - this is the most important thing for me when staying in hotels
It is not a fancy hotel but perfect for our needs, and every member of staff we encountered was friendly and helpful
We come to Southend often for events at the cliffs pavilion and are delighted to have found a clean and friendly hotel to stay in each time - we will definitely be back
- michael (8/5): - parking was ok.Value for money ok.I was given an extra heater since my bed was next to a window .I was given a room en suite at no extra charge.
- Verified traveler (8/5): More of a hostel than a hotel. - The room was very basic but for the price I wasn’t expecting much. The sheets were clean, the bathroom was clean. The bed was not the most comfortable and a bit squeaky. I was a little bit cold despite having the heater on. The real star of the hotel was Ronnie and her husband who were friendly and welcoming.
- lynne (8/5): Good value for money - Oyó is a basic hotel, and it’s priced appropriately. It’s clean and tidy, everything works, and the staff were very helpful and accommodating. The building itself is old and is in need of some refurbishment, but it’s not really a problem for me. The location is great.
- Helen (6/5): - The location of the property was the best feature for us and the fact you could park on the drive. Staff were very friendly too. I though check out was quite early and so we ended up paying more to check out later which in hindsight made it more expensive than the other hotels we were looking at. There was a damp smell in our room and the shower stopped working so my husband had to go in another room. We did get an apology but perhaps we could have been offered something to say sorry like a reimbursement of the extra we paid to check out late. I did think it felt more like a hostel than a hotel but can understand this based on the price. Overall it was good value, clean, had friendly staff, free wifi, parking and was a good location.
- PAUL (10/5): great hotel! - very close to Westcliff station at one end and the esplanade at the other. Friendly staff and clean, very comfortable room.
- Rob (2/5): Awful Experience - Terrible hotel with a rude and belligerent manager. Condition of the room is beyond careworn and is borderline dangerous. Room doors that wont open or close, dirty bedding and broken and dirty china.
Avoid this over-priced hotel
- Mia (10/5): Great time at Oyo Devine beach hotel! - Had a good time at this hotel, made even better by the lovely staff who work there. The vibe is homely and comforting, slightly older build but generally the best it could be given the age. Cleanliness was good too, overall nothing to complain about. Would definitely recommend.
- Tina (10/5): - Lovely friendly receptionist Ronnie, very close to beach and restaurants enjoyed our stay. Parking at site. Hoping to return.
- Josh (2/5): AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! - Avoid this place like the plague! It was very very dirty, receptionist was very very rude and ill mannered with zero customer service. There was no working toilet, shower or even sink in this place! When i asked for a refund so i could stay somewhere with a toilet and running water i was told no! The hotel should of cancelled as it is illegal to not having running water or a workkng toilet for guests but they didnt and have kept my money! Disgusting place with disgusting customer service.
- Jacqueline (2/5): Run down and smelly avoid! - Booked this stay for three of us for two nights. The place was smelly on arrival and run down. The reception request a deposit on arrival of £50 and check the room before releasing it at the end of the stay. I’m not sure what damage could be done as the rooms are already old and run down wardrobe was old and damaged with three coat hangers in! There was no hooks for towels and they didn’t change them the second day, The bedding was clean and that’s about it!
- Aurora (10/5): - MY STAY WAS AMAZING AND WONDERFUL STAFF.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Smells and looks scruffy
- Andrew (8/5): Good value for the price - I visited this hotel with my daughter after visiting a friend and found that the bedding was clean and comfortable.
The room was clean and tidy and provided everything that we needed for our stay.
While there are better hotels out there, this hotel is very good value for what you pay.
Bear in mind that when booking this room that Southend beach is about a mile away but as a consequence, the parking outside the hotel and in the immediate area is generally free.
- Andrew (2/5): Left outside in the cold - Don’t waste your time even reading this report, stay somewhere else.
Invest your time and money elsewhere.
I arrived at 2:05 and saw a great big sign on the door saying check-in does not start till 2 o’clock which was the first warning sign. I repeatedly rang both bells and nobody let me in for 20 minutes. I explained I needed to check in because I was going to work and wouldn’t be back until 2 am.
The cleaner said she wasn’t able to check me in as she didn’t know what room I should be in. She then went and knocked on the door of the daughter of the proprietor explaining that there was somebody to check in as if it was something unusual that doesn’t happen in a hotel!!
There was a discussion with the proprietor over the phone and then the daughter came down with the cleaner and this was the worst experience ever.
She spoke to the cleaner in front of me as if I wasn’t there, The worst was when she said to the cleaner “ make sure you get the deposit from him“
Considering the circumstances you thought she would’ve given a smile and an apology to me for the delay but she was more interested in getting a deposit from a business person dressed in the suit, despite the place full of DSS residents!
The room I had no mirror in the bathroom, the shower door wouldn’t close, Wi-Fi no code so not usable I am so and the weather was unusually cold for the time of year yet no heating in the room .
Awful experience never to be repeated
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The room was nice
- Morley (10/5): Very enjoyable stay - Fabulous stay, lovely welcome, helpful staff, clean and warm with kettle. Will come again
- anthony (10/5): - Fantastic value. My room was warm, clean and freshly decorated with a nice en-suite. The staff were all friendly and helpful. I would 100% stay again
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Property was very handy for Westcliff train station. Room was clean and warm. Shower in bathroom was weak and the shower head did not stay in the bracket very well.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Bed was the most uncomfortable I have ever slept in- you could feel the springs in the mattress and they were very noisy every time you moved!
Shower and bathroom had mould around the seal and everything very dated.
I’m not sure what sort of clientele they get here but I’ve never had to pay a £50 deposit and then have the room checked before I leave to make sure I hadn’t stolen anything! Ronnie the manager was lovely but I felt this treatment was a it much!
I know it’s cheap and you get what you pay for but I’d rather pay about £10 more and get a reliable room at the Premier Inn or similar.
Would not return.
- Daniel (8/5): Cheap and cheerful - A basic hotel but adequate for my needs. Unexpected charge of £50 deposit on arrival. Only 5 parking spaces with no legal parking nearby. Noisy early morning....I think some people had early flight from Southend airport. Good enough value for money if you are not looking for frills.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - i've stayed here a couple times and i love it each time :) this time i stayed with my 2 year old daughter just to get away for the night but my only problem with the room was that it was very chilly we had too keep our jumpers on but part from that i loved my stay
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value for a basic, comfortable hotel - Older hotel but clean and ordered. Good value for what I wanted: a clean bathroom and a warm, dry, comfortable place to sleep after a long day of walking-and-gawking.
- Sarah-Jayne (6/5): Basic b&b - We stayed overnight was visiting the westcliff pavilion. The room was basic bed a bit springy hairdryer on wall didn’t seem to work or plug in anywhere. Went home with wet hair! Basic
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The property is excellent value for money in a good position
It is a bit tired but it is very low budget, our room was clean and a good size
We were greeted at reception by a lovely lady called Ronnie and the staff were very helpful
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Ok bit dated . Good for a night and decent location
- Brian (6/5): Never again - Stay was so so. £50 deposit taken from my card on arrival, 8 days later and still not returned. Hotel very tired and staff quite rude. Have used OYO hotels around the country and always been OK but this o e is appalling.

- Verified traveler (4/5): - Not very clean, staff odd. Only continental breakfast (not stated when booking)
- Steve (10/5): - Great staff ,Ronnie was very helpful and friendly (even loaned me a charger for my phone) , Room was Quirky and small but Clean , the bed was comfortable towels soft, water was hot and perssure good Great place for a short stay !
- Adnan (8/5): Hmm - All ok but too expensive for its condition and location, very old building and smells old too, few things are over asked at checkin some unnecessary questions in the checkin form and the deposit of 50 is for nothing, not even the 5 star hotels are asking for hat kind of deposit
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Room was very nice clean and comfy. Staff were very friendly
