- Joanne (8/5): Lovely hotel and staff, just don't bother with the spa - The hotel was beautiful and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.... The porter was lovely and helpful as were the bar staff (the bar was nice also) Fresh flowers in beautiful arrangements and small flowers on each dining table adorned the hotel which was lovely. Food was ok, nothing amazing but it was tasty and hot The leisure facilities. The swimming pool had a 6" scummy tide mark all around it, the floor of the pool area was old concrete that was just disgusting, the jacuzzi was very dated (as was the decor etc) and the sauna was a health hazard. The boards were all splitting and were dirty, the floors were minging and had rubbish in it and to top it off, there were 3 lads in there with foul mouths.... not ideal when holidaying with your mother! When we complained the staff were most apologetic which was appreciated but it still was a great dampener on our break

- Moira (10/5): Perfect, old fashioned hospitality. - Location perfect for touring Portpatrick, Mull of Galloway, etc. Stranraer is a nice town with lovely people. The hotel has old fashioned hospitality, dining and comfort. Perfect for a relaxing break. Our room had a huge bed and a single bed. The room itself was enormous with both a bath and shower. Also, a decent hairdryer! Beautiful views. Breakfast is served in the large dining room with set tables and waitress service. I’d recommend staying for dinner too. The housekeeping staff were friendly and couldn’t do enough to help. All staff were professional and friendly. It’s also obvious that the Manager knows his hotel well. Car is safe in hotel car park. We enjoyed our swim, jacuzzi and sauna each evening. Although we didn’t visit Stranraer beach we did visit Sandhead. Nothing.

- Mick (9/5): - Super comfy bed. Luxurious lounge areas. We ate one night in the dining room and the food was outstanding. We were there for work but would definitely go back for leisure. Small niggles that wouldn't stop us staying again. Our room was a bit tired and needed a spruce. The nozzle for the hairdryer was the wrong one and didn't fit. The room could benefit with a phone to contact reception and an iron and ironing board would have been handy. Also no plug socket near.the bed for charging phones

The staff were exceptional - couldn't have been more helpful. Nothing the hotel could really change. That part of Stranraer has been affected by the ferry company moving out and there is lot of waste land. In fairness, it's also a bit dated but great value for all that.

Really convenient for the P&O and Stena Ferry services at Cairnryan - We booked a room at the last minute, for a 2am check-in, with a 54kg pet dog, 24/7 reception, and parking needed. WOW - This Hotel is a little gem!! We had an emergency trip to Belfast, going out and back same day - knowing we were going to be too tired to drive the 8 hours home, we decided to book. The communal facilities reflect the age and history of the building. The bedroom we stayed in was absolutely beautiful, with plush carpet, fixtures and fittings. I booked a large double bed - which was heavenly. The bathroom was modern and clean, the shower was amazing!!! There was plenty of room for our 54kg dog to lay out and sleep. Breakfast HOT and continental was included within our booking. The cost for a last minute arrival, at stupid o'clock in the morning - was absolutely reasonable. Staff were respectful and efficient. I like to sleep with the window open, so both myself and our dog don't get too hot (I am a female of an age, lol) - unfortunately the room we had backed onto a Morrison's click and collect station, the Morrison's was functional all night moving cages and working overnight to load distribution trucks as well as arranging goods in the yard. On the plus side, once I closed the window we could not hear the noise but the room was warm. Bedding: The sheets and pillows on the bed were not the same level of thread count as the duvet cover. So the pillows and sheets were not as silky on the skin - but not the end of the world given our circumstances.

Nice seating arrangements to sit comfortably and have a few beers with my Friends. Rooms are fine and a good size. Ample parking. - Tibor Beetles (8/5): Comfortable and full of character - Very characterful hotel with an "old glamour" feel but not rundown by any means. Room was very comfortable and clean and the fitness centre was good. One of our friends incurred noise from wedding guests late at night. Car Park was fairly small and almost full by early evening.

Easy car parking and they now have electric vehicle charging stations available. Although, none electric cars did seem to be blocking most stations. WiFi was terrible, had to link to my phones signal to enable my laptop to access the internet

- Hugo Grotius (7/5): A dignified hotel in a scrappy town, professional in its housekeeping but let down by its restaurant - The hotel was very accessible and had ample parking. It was large and had a certain period grandeur, which we enjoyed - especially in a town without much to look at. The cleanliness and furnishing was excellent throughout; one felt the benefit of the professional managerial experience of the Bespoke group that runs it. The period atmosphere extended to the lift, which was a bit like the lifts one used to encounter in small provincial hotels in France; either you enjoyed it or it made you slightly nervous. The room was large, light and had a good view out over the harbour (which is not picturesque) and the loch (which is). There were (a minor but rare point) plenty of solid wooden clothes-hangers in the closet - thank you! Soundproofing between the floors could have been better. More seriously, the restaurant does not match the quality the hotel achieves in other respects. Guests depend on the hotel restaurant, since Stranraer offers rather little in the way of dining otherwise. This one, though housed in a handsome dining room with plush table-settings, has an unimaginative dinner-menu and a tediously samey breakfast buffet. We found no evidence of use of local produce, which in Galloway ought to be an obvious feature. The best wine available by the glass is of second-rate quality, and there is no brewed decaffeinated coffee to be had. One has a sense that it relies on traffic from the ferries, and aims at the lowest common denominator.

- Graham (10/5): An enjoyable experience. - The bar was a lovely panelled space. Bar prices were reasonable. The dining room was airy and spacious. Our original room had a whistling noise and staff were wonderful in locating us a different quiet one. Being allocated a noisy room in the first place when a quiet one was available elsewhere.

Breakfast was a bit greasy and no square sliced sausage. Too much cheese on nachos. Bit dated in places. Shame Only allowed in morning room for meals or drinks with dog, especially as a walk through at times by staff or guests. Be good to have music in games room or drinks to purchase there.

Beds were very uncomfortable, my husband and I kept rolling into the middle of the bed. We didn't eat at hotel so couldn't comment on that side of things but certainly nothing in this hotel or Stranraer to lure us back, only thing I ended up was with a sore back.

Upon arrival, the staff asked if I would prefer a twin room because I was with my son (there were only doubles left available on booking.com). As it turned out, they didn’t have any twins left so offered me a family room instead at no extra charge. It was very thoughtful of them, though not surprising as Stranraer excels in kindness and hospitality! N/A

- Charlie (10/5): Excellent historical hotel - It's an iconic hotel which has been modernised but still has many traditional features. I had a brilliant room right at the top with a superb view all the way up Loch Ryan to Ailsa Craig and Kintyre where I watched a great sunset. The room was large and had a nice deep bath. It's a 15 minute walk from Agnew parkrun and 10 minutes from the centre. Nothing apart from the train service down to Stranraer from the Central Belt being infrequent and slow.

- Elizabeth (7/5): Stayed many times. Celebrated my 80th there with family. Will definitely be bsck - Location very good but I felt breakfast a little overcooked. Haggis crisp ...tomato...very small end and overcooked. Egg hard ...not freshly fried. The overall taste was good and I didn't mention any of these things but as you're asking i may as well say as I found it. Felt like breakfast had been kept hot and not freshly cooked. We went down at 9. Maybe should have gone earlier... but you shouldn't need to.

- Ewa (10/5): Wonderful place - Beautiful big room. Very nice and clean. Pool available at the hotel. Close by to the shops and local restaurants. There was no soap/shampoo in the shower at swimming
