- Berwickshirenat12 (10/5): A joy to return to Cally - We have visited over many years, when in family ownership now Bespoke, saddened to read that it has been put on the market. Bought as a a bundle of three, the other two nearer the ferry, oyster festival, skiff racing we understand desire to focus on revenues there…however, Cally is unique and ought to remain part of their portfolio. Our recent visit was a joy, a much needed break after busy parish and hospital duties and my wife’s hospitalisation. The staff could not have been more helpful and engaging. We were allowed the run of the house without being fussed over, staff on hand whenever needed, day two we felt we owned the place and perhaps that is Cally’s secret. It provides a venue where folk can enjoy grander days beyond our imagining, an antidote to synthetic or over restored hotels. Swim, Sauna and jacuzzi before leisurely breakfast…drives to Kirkcudbright, Threave Castle and Gardens, book town of Wigton….through the remnants of ancient rain forests just north of the hotel…so much to see and do before returning to the swimming pool and cocktails before supper. The bar staff helpfully creating cocktails for my wife. Chef is an artist, each dish prepared with skill and care, their mother must be very proud. Cally is an oasis of changelessness in a world of fast change …long may it be there for us and all the other appreciative customers.
- macdivot (6/5): I have mixed views about this place. - Lovely 1 mile drive in to the hotel which is grand in appearance. Arrived 10 mins before check in time of 3pm and asked to sit in lounge. Room key given 5 mins later. Odd, why not at reception desk? Deluxe room on second floor was huge. Bedroom area and bathroom so spacious, but tired looking. Table scratched. Why was the walk in shower so small when so much space in the bathroom? The bed was bad. I suffer from a bad back, and the pain I have was increased severely after sleeping on it for the 2 nights. Service by the staff was mixed. Good in the bar, and not so good in the dining room. Asked for ice to put in my water and was told “right away” by the waitress. Same girl passed by our table several times, and eventually had to ask another waitress, who immediately brought it to the table. Also, no salt in the small shaker on the table. Why not checked before service? The food was very good, and the chef did an excellent job on everything we chose to eat at dinner. Breakfast buffet was very good. The public areas and grounds are impressive. That said, it’s clear the building is in bad need of some tlc. Paint flaking off window frames, scuff marks on doors and walls, all needing attention. It’s advertised as 4 star, maybe because of the spa and golf course, neither of which we used. It’s owned by Bespoke Hotel group. Serious money needs to be spent on interior and exterior painting/ refurbishment to revitalize what is a beautiful old manor house.
- OutragedD9 (10/5): An enjoyable break - Had a great stay at the Cally Palace for my mum's 80th. The staff couldn't have been nicer and were particularly great in helping us get the room decorated etc to make the day special. Special shout to Annie, Arron and the food & beverage manager (sorry I can't recall his name!) as they all went above and beyond. The grounds and old house are lovely with the swimming pool area in particular being very nice. I played the golf course and it was in decent condition despite the poor weather around our visit. One thing I would note to future guests is that there's no pro shop etc so bring all your own gear. Also don't hire the clubs, they were only a fiver but they've a cheek charging that. The set I was given didn't have a driver! As previous reviews have mentioned the rooms, and other aspects of the hotel, are in need of an upgrade/modernisation but I think this could be underway albeit at a slow pace. Finally, a big plus is that the hotel is dog friendly! We didn't have ours with us but it made us happy to see other people's pups about the place.
- Sallyhugh (8/5): Lovely Hotel - The initial drive up to the hotel was very impressive with the grounds being well tended+ manicured. Our welcome from the receptionist who's first language was not English was quite sharp. The interior of the entrance had a beautiful flower display and an amazing entrance. On walking to our room past the swimming pool which looked and turned out to be lovely, we passed wicker chairs which were broken and had holes in them .Removal of these broken chairs would cost nil and improve the impression of the hotel. Our room 115 was massive, clean + with a lovely balcony which was well used as our stay was during a spring heatwave! The views were very impressive, but again simple things like lifting a blown down cushion from a balcony would improve impressions and cost nothing. The public rooms were very impressive in keeping with the age + stature of the building. It would have been good if the paintings had been named so you knew who you were looking at. We ate dinner on the first night and the quality of the food was very good as was the friendliness of all staff we encountered especially the barman who had been with the hotel for 30 years. Breakfast was good but with no apparent dietary exceptions and I missed my usual greek / lactose free yogurt with my fruit. Certain items in hot buffet was very dried out, possibly as the hotel was not too busy and there was not a big turnover of food. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our 2 day break in an impressive country house which retained the history of its past grandeur .There were impressive grounds and walks. Attention to small details would make a big difference to the view of the hotel to others.

With spacious rooms and enormous comfortable beds. We eat in the hotel and enjoy the buffet breakfast. There is a pool, jacuzzi and sauna available and a snooker and pool table. The location is ideal

You are left to make your own bed as room cleaning making up has been abolished, Very young and inexperienced staff in restaurant. . Don t bother I will nit be coming back. .

- daveinglasgow (8/5): Above average and delightfully v Scottish - The rooms are far bigger than average. Slightly out dated but huge beds, comfortable etc. Ours had 2 desks in it and a balcony. Pool is brilliant as is the sauna and hot tub. Shame no ice machine or cold shower next to the sauna but these are minor things. Love the paintings, the snooker table etc. It has an old world feel about the place.. think of titanic style but not quite as opulent. Breakfast is good and had haggis, and a wide selection. So if you like red carpet, high stunning ceilings, big comfortable rooms.... yes this place is worth it.

Our room was spotless and on request was cleaned and replenished daily. We used the swimming pool each day which was an added bonus to our stay. Breakfast was varied, plentiful and delicious; waiting staff always friendly and efficient. We will definitely be returning.

- AlandSueGlasgow (10/5): Family break away - Hotel is down a single track road through the woods, close to the lovely village of Gatehouse of fleet which is well worth a visit. The hotel is a grand affair, with huge reception rooms and huge bedrooms. It is very well kept and full of history. The pool area needs some TLC but perfectly usable, with a new hot tub just fitted. Bedrooms are massive, very clean and were very warm, had to open the windows to cool the rooms we had to cooldown. 3 rooms booked, 2 with walk in showers were the accessible room and the deluxe double. The other types of room only have a bath/shower combo. The showers were hot and strong flow. The deluxe double was on 3rd floor but had a lift to it, not all rooms can be accessed by the lift so be careful if stairs are a problem. Found the rooms quiet and comfortable, tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms. Reception has a dozen steps to the ground floor, a ramp is at the rear of the hotel, round to the right, a few hundred meters walk. If dinning with your pet, you can eat in the conservatory with your dog, dinner is table service, for breakfast you go to the buffet and walk the 50 meters back with your food. The conservatory was lovely and warm in the winter. Breakfast is worth it, Dinner was not, some was overcooked rubbery, some burnt and the rest had no flavour, huge disappointment. The staff were mainly great, a couple went above and beyond, most very friendly and helpful with a couple having a bad day, but in no way rude. Highly recommend the hotel for staying and breakfast, give dinner a miss and go to the village for far better quality, we will definitely be back to see what its like in the summer.
- petulas2017 (10/5): Beautiful old Hotel with cozy atmosphere - Beautiful old hotel with super helpful staff, excellent food and brilliant facilities. We used the hotel pool, jacuzzi and sauna each day and had fluffy robes provided. Such a lovely atmosphere and the log fires each night - fantastic. We ate out a couple of nights and wished we had stayed at hotel, lovely food and amazing breakfast. Our room was HUGE and really warm (no 43) Couldn’t ask for more, reading other reviews I would say some people have just been unlucky! Highly recommend

We stayed for the 4 night Christmas break and everything was superb. The food was delicious (and plentiful), the staff were brilliant, there was so much to do. Even the weather was great so we could get a couple of rounds of golf in! Definitely recommend 💖

The food was delicious, great pool, huge room and the whole place is kept so clean. The staff were all so helpful and friendly too! - Exploremore94 (8/5): Nice hotel but serious issues with the barman at night time who is a ‘manager’. - Came here for a birthday celebration. The two rooms we had were lovely. The pool was fab. We did however have issues with the barman who is believed to be a manager in the evening, extremely rude to myself and my family and totally uncalled for with rude inappropriate remarks. He said it was his ‘sense of humour’ after we brought it up with reception. I had a look at other reviews to see if anyone else has had issues with this same man and there are quite a few, he did ruin our evening sadly!

Food was excellent (freshly cooked meals). Pool, sauna, hot tub, gym. Red squirrels and deer on the golf course at dawn. Very large bedroom. Just beautiful.
- C9768CMstuartb (2/5): Very Dissapointing. - Overall very disappointing. It is in a lovely location, the swimming pool is fine apart from clumps of grass walked in from the golf course. The food is not inspired but not bad, though items on the main menu were sometimes not available. Apart from that our three night stay was not good. Booked a ‘delux’ room in the old house. The lift was not working, so climbed the stairs with our suitcases. There was a hoover, left in the middle of the room which was a surprise, however the worst thing was that the window in our room was covered by, and I don't exaggerate, hundreds of houseflies. After a liberal application of fly spray by housekeeping the room was still unusable. After a delay an alternative was found on the ground floor. We very nearly left after the first night. The whole place is in need of investment. Lift and sauna broken, fixtures and fittings worn, areas of one of the main lounges cordoned off due to water coming through the ceiling. Staff in the dining room were casual, bordering on rude. The dining room is very large, on the first night, with only four couples in the room, they were 'Not sure if we can seat you"! It was a Faulty Towers experience writ large. The one exception was the lady in the bar who was very competent and highly professional. It was well below the standard you might reasonably expect from a four start hotel at this price point.
- D9496BJallyw (4/5): Disappointment - It looks grand from the outside and certain aspects of the interior still are, but it's all downhill after that! We asked for an accessible room and were given a room up several flights of stairs. The lift was out of order. The lounge areas on the first floor only have one toilet/baby change and it's at the furthest end of the building. We called several days before arrival to ask about facilities and were told the part we wanted to use was out of order. It was functioning when we arrived, but we didn't bring swimwear after being wrongly informed. To say our room was dated is an understatement, the furniture and fittings must be from the 1930's! There are no plug points for electronics. We were in a family group and several points were raised over food quality. We had to pre order food 6 days in advance, probably to make sure 3663 had stock, and some of it wasn't available on the night! I left my main course of risotto as it tasted of being over salted. My wife and I didn't have breakfast. On arrival Dave and the lovely young lady serving the bar ( sorry I can't remember your name ) were extremely chatty, polite and helpful. The barman at night was bad mannered to the point of being downright rude. Overall, not a good experience and we won't return.
- fionabQ2388VE (4/5): Disappointing - The hotel is in a lovely setting and looks nice from the outside. The receptionist on arrival was helpful and took care of our requests. The pool is nice and the jacuzzi hot. Towels were provided as we were using facilities prior to check in. We were advised that the sauna wasn't working before our arrival but once inside the pool area, we found it was. The hotel is tired and needs a good overhaul. Squeaky floor boards. The bedroom doors were loud when closing. Could hear people in their rooms opposite. Bar staff not always pleasant. Some waiting staff were good, others not so. It all seemed a bit disjointed and not at all what we were expecting for our weekend away. We were asked to preorder our meals prior to arriving at the hotel, then advised on the evening that there was no cheesecake! That's not acceptable considering we were the first in the dining area for dinner service. The meals were nice but very overpriced imo. The rooms were large and clean but, again tired. Only one usable plug socket next to the door and not near the mirror at the desk to be able to use straighteners. No usb sockets. Complimentary white company toiletries available for use. Breakfast was buffet style although there was a menu you could ask for other items at an extra cost.

We enjoyed our stay, in a very large room with a small balcony overlooking part of the garden. Well enough equipped, although an in-room iron/board would have come in useful. Breakfasts were plentiful, including a to-order section, and good. Friendly and accommodating staff team. Overall an nice relaxing experience. For the price, I would rather stay here than in a boring corporate hotel.
- welltravelled785 (4/5): Not a good experience. - God this was awful food wise. My husband had a round of golf here and I met him for lunch after it. My parents used to go here regularly with their friends back in the day, it is a big old place and sadly showing its age now. I did start with an excellently made Mojito and then our food arrived. I had the ploughman's salad, I couldn't eat it, the elements on the plate looked as though they had come from the convenience store down the road. Cheap white bread, anaemic pre formed ham, tiny slice of cheap cheddar, sad looking shiny coleslaw, no salad etc etc, my husband had the soup and a sandwich made with the same bread and cheapest ham - he eats pretty much anything and was hungry so ate his. The waiter was so good, he refunded my meal including the Mojito, which he didn't have to do, without a quibble. We left as soon as we could embarrassed, my first experience of declining a meal somewhere. Husband also didn't enjoy the golf course, he is an avid golfer though, he thought it was in very poor condition and played badly. I thought the course looked interesting but I am no golfer!
- Scotlandio (8/5): Dated but could be gorgeous - This is a strange one. It could be an absolutely beautiful hotel but it is just a bit dated. The common areas are all gorgeous, it is well maintained and you can see the original splendour it once had. The bedroom though was very dated. It was still in very good order, well maintained and very clean but very old. I wouldn’t say tired because it has been looked after - but in this day, it’s probably not what people would expect. The bar area is lovely and the pool looks lovely too. Breakfast was a hot and cold buffet which is always our preference but quite hard to find these days. The staff were all excellent with only one notable exception, but we can all have an off day so I’ll not dwell on that. Would I return, yes, would I recommend it possibly not as everyone’s expectations are different. I understand it’s up for sale, I hope the new owners overhaul the bedrooms and make it into the hotel it could and deserves to be.
- 713gordons (6/5): Going downhill - Having stayed at this hotel over many years, we have noticed the decline in services and increase in prices since Bespoke Hotels took over. On our latest stay, one of the receptionists was admonished by the other in our presence which was a bit awkward for us. The same thing happened in August with the same two receptists. Our balcony room had biscuit crumbs all over the floor, there was no bottled water provided and the balcony door lock was broken. As we were on the ground floor, it gave easy access to our room at any time. We stayed in a different room in August and the door lock was broken there too. We've also noticed when checking out, the staff never ask how our stay was. Perhaps they're worried to ask! It's a shame that things are steadily going downhill as it's such a lovely building and surrounds.
- lauramQ2706IL (6/5): Mixed feelings - First the positive aspects- the hotel is set in beautiful grounds and we stayed in a deluxe room on the ground floor. The room and bathroom were extremely spacious and very clean. The bed was extra large and very comfortable. The hotel has a lovely 15 metre swimming pool and I swam twice there and found it to be very relaxing. The waiting staff at the restaurant both at evening service and breakfast were very helpful and friendly. Now for the less positive aspects- there was a poor welcome from reception on our arrival and no information given apart from where our room was. The sauna in the leisure suite was out of order and the water in the supposed hot tub was not warm. The restaurant has no atmosphere and it feels more like a canteen. The food was very disappointing and expensive. I ordered the duck and it was overcooked and served with one large roast potato rather than fondant potato - I complained and it was taken off the bill. My husband’s venison pie was ok and was supposed to come with fries, but they did not arrive until he had eaten half of it. It’s a shame that both the food and reception service let the hotel down. The management really needs to sort these things out as you want to feel welcome when you arrive somewhere for the night after a long journey and you also want to enjoy your meal without having to complain.

- rjf48 (8/5): Two night pleasant stay. - We had a couple nights here BB staying in a large forest room (118) one night with dinner. Our room was huge with two bathrooms and plenty of storage. Beds were really comfortable, the shower great and a view over part of the forest/fields. Breakfasts were very good. Dinner excellent on both nights. We paid for dinner second night. Drinks are a little expensive I think. Staff really friendly and helpful. It has a decent sized indoor pool with jacuzzi. We used it lots and enjoyed our time swimming. Ok maybe it may need a little upgrade here and there but on the whole we enjoyed our stay very much. If you fancy a couple of nights away it’s well worth a trip. Gatehouse of Fleet is small but has a nice little tourist spot where you can grab a coffee and have a look around the small museum.

- Skipper870 (6/5): An enjoyable stay but some aspects disappointing. - We stayed at the Cally Palace at the start of September for 3 nights. We were in room 114 which has a balcony and overlooks grass and trees at the rear of the hotel. The hotel has obviously been a grand house in the past and the lounge and dinning areas were large. Our room was also very large but badly in need of some refurbishment. Everything was very clean and there was tea and coffee making facilities plus tasty biscuits on a tray. There were a few downsides to the room however. The flat screen TV must be one of the very first models being a 26 inch model manufactured in 2009. We could only get BBC channels on it, never mind smart TV! Furniture is decidedly tired, the brown/grey carpet doesn't help though the beds were comfy. The bathroom was small given the size of the room and the balcony was a bit grubby with one of the two chairs being wobbly. We were booked for bed and breakfast and the breakfasts were excellent. Plenty of choice and very tasty. On the first night we also ate in the dinning room. This had been moved to a different dinning room as there was a large conference the following day so the main dinning area was being set up. It felt a bit like eating our meal in a care home! Food is pricey with fish and chips being £23.50. We opted for Balmoral chicken at the same price which was excellent and we'd consider an acceptable price. Wines on the wine list were very expensive though a pint of draught lager was OK. There is free Wi-Fi in the hotel which was good. A big plus is the spa facilities. It's probably stretching it to call it a spa as the sauna was out of action and appears to have been so for some time. There is a jacuzzi and an excellent 15 m pool. There were also a few exercise machines in an enclosed area which we didn't use. The pool was quiet with only one or two people in the area at any one time. Overall, we enjoyed our stay but the hotel needs some money spent on it if it really wants to call itself 4 star. The main down side is the tired state of some areas.

Great staff. - There are some criticisms about the Cally Palace; some say it's dated, that it's a bit jaded, but I found I could excuse that when so many other aspects of the hotel shone through. I did find someone's complaint that they'd run out of croissants at breakfast somewhat petty minded. Firstly, the location. The entrance drive is long and impressive and, in my opinion well signposted, through beautiful leafy woodland leading to the hotel, which is set in stunning secluded forest and gardens including the golf course and water features. It's like entering Downton Abbey with all its grandeur. You half expect to be greeted by a kilted Laird at the door. The main body of the building is certainly impressive like a stately home. Every member of staff I encountered was cheerful, welcoming and happy to help. I stayed in a double balcony room (107) which is in a more contemporary part of the hotel. A benefit of this was easy access out to the car park from a ground floor door for unloading my luggage without having to walk too far along corridors. My room was very spacious with a King sized bed. Yes, it was a bit dated, but it was clean. There were two armchairs with a coffee table plus two wardrobes with robes and pool towels inside, a dressing table with mirror and two charging points/sockets, with hairdryer in the drawer and a work desk. Another unit housed the TV and tea/coffee making facilities, milks, various teas, sugars and biscuits. There was a luggage rack and plenty of storage/hanging space. Large sliding doors led out to the balcony with two chairs and a table. The views were of woodland overlooking part of the golf course. The balcony is part undercover from the balcony above, so even when it was lightly raining I could sit outside. The bathroom was again dated, but again very clean with plenty of soft towels. There were hand-wash, body lotion, shower gel and shampoo available and a decent supply of spare toilet rolls. The shower is an over bath one with a curtain. Unfortunately, on my second morning it wouldn't work, but I managed without and reported it as I was leaving. I did look quite ancient to be honest. I was impressed to see a body dryer in the bathroom which was very effective, although it looked like something out of ghostbusters! The bed was reasonably comfortable, a bit lumpy in parts, but nevertheless I slept like a baby. The bedding was clean and the pillows soft and like new, although I bring my own due to neck problems. There was an additional blanket in the wardrobe. I did eat in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. I've read criticisms about certain aspects of the restaurant, but I certainly found the service to be excellent. The staff here were so attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Harry and Ezra both deserve a special mention for their friendly can-do attitude. At breakfast I ordered porridge and it arrived quickly, was hot and better than I could make, so creamy. I saw other guests being served freshly poached eggs to order. The buffet is pretty extensive. A decent selection of juices, cereals, yogurts and fresh fruits plus a toasting station. Lots of Danish pastries and croissants. There is a hot buffet section with everything to make a full Scottish - scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausages, bacon, haggis, baked beans, tomatoes and mushrooms. If you're fussy about your scrambled eggs, which are sitting out in a hot dish, perhaps ask for a freshly cooked one instead. I was OK with the scrambled, but some people have complained they're rubbery. You make your own coffee at machines, but for tea drinkers they will get fresh boiling water in teapots for you. My dinner was actually a starter, followed by a dessert because I couldn't eat a large meal. It wasn't a true reflection of the menu as I only ate there one night. There did look like a good selection on offer. The service was once again excellent. I used the swimming pool early one morning. This is a lovely feature and the facilities are well maintained. There are showers and hairdryer in the ladies changing room. There are lockers for personal items and a wee machine to spin your wet swimwear plus a bag to pop it in. I didn't use the hot tub and the sauna was out of order. There are plenty of loungers around the pool. I was so impressed with the Cally Palace I stayed an extra night, although I didn't eat dinner the second night. I would definitely stay again. Highly recommended.

Sadly the real efforts of the staff could not overcome the really poor level of management that has brought down what was once a lovely hotel. A manager was called and they realised a previous guest on check out had mentioned their bill was not correct assume their dinner etc was billed to our room no by mistake. Were planning on stopping off again on our return journey as its a lovely but are having second thoughts due to poor administration.

We arrived about 2.30 and decided to get some food, however we were told by the bar staff that food wasn't available as they had stopped serving lunch. We ordered 2 teas and drank them in the Conservatory, after about 20 mins a member of staff kindly brought us a dish of nuts and offered to try a get us a scone or some sandwiches, we declined as there were wasps flying about! Windowsills were dirty and generally there was a feeling of decay about the Conservatory. On the bright side our bedroom was big with a large bathroom containing a bath and shower and nice products. The room was advertised as traditional however it was really just old fashioned. The beds were clean and comfortable. We didn't mind there wasn't daily housekeeping as there were plenty of towels and a well-stocked hospitality tray. Food on the whole was good both evening meal and breakfast. Lovey setting and lots of walks, It would be helpful if some signage could be organised showing the different pathways to Gatehouse of Fleet. Our highlight was seeing hundreds of stars over the golf course, which was the reason we booked this hotel as it is situated in Cally Woods. There is so much potential for this hotel to be a great 4 star, but would need investment. It just feels so unloved and uncared for as most of the windows appear to be rotting away. In our opinion it's not 4 star. I do think that it will appeal to an older clientele.

The hotel, which looks like an old castle, is situated at the end of a long driveway through the woods and is surrounded by stunning grounds and a golf course. The interior of the hotel is what I would class as rustic, but I think if it was to be modernised, it would spoil this beautiful building. It's a beautiful building with extensive, gorgeous grounds. The staff went above and beyond to welcome us and made our stay comfortable and enjoyable. * The pool, hot tub, and sauna were lovely and the kids enjoyed it. * The beds were soft and felt like we were sleeping on a cloud. * They have 1 free pool and snooker table which are both well looked after. * There are some lovely sitting areas where you can have a drink or a bite to eat. They were rock hard. The scrambled eggs tasted like rubber. Better to just order some fresh fried or poached eggs. 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 I feel the one thing that saves the hotel here is definitely the staff. I would have given it an extra star if it wasn't for the bird poo, dog hair, pool area etc. It is a stunning place as I said and we'd definitely stay again. We just wish the little things were looked after better. We didn't have dinner here as we had made plans to dine out elsewhere. The food look great otherwise. I think Bespoke Hotels need to pull their finger out and pump some money into this hotel to bring it up to spec. Other than that, I think it's worth checking out.
- Joy (6/5): - Lovely setting, full of old-fashioned charm. Dinner was really disappointing - multiple dishes from the menu were not available, and our 3rd choice of sirloin steak was mediocre. Cheese platter was good with a generous helping. Bed was far too soft, no support at all, a really uncomfortable night. Breakfast was ok but nothing special.

- SusieBells (8/5): Grand hotel for a get-away escape. - Sumptuous surroundings, this grand old hotel feels a bit like staying in a stately home. Staff were warm and more than helpful, food excellent and the furniture was so comfy I didn't want to leave the armchair in my bedroom! Bathroom spotless and the surroundings luscious greens of the hills, forest and golf course.
- Jeremy (8/5): - A lovely and luxurious hotel in need of updating in some respects. Our room was a little odd - enormous but with a low ceiling and small windows for the size of room which made it rather dark. It is also rather dated and the furnishings are showing their age a little, but still very comfortable. We ate at the hotel on one evening and none of the items we ordered (both mains and wine) was available although on the menu. Porridge was a strange omission from breakfast for a Scottish hotel.
- john (4/5): - Food, service ok. Room needs upgrade. Door closing mechanism requires maintenance, along with fire doors. Noise of doors closing in middle of night not acceptable!!!!
- katiecE1389GQ (10/5): A honest review - Cally palace is set in an exquisite forest set right back down a long beautiful drive . Upon arrival I have to say my first impressions started to kick in and I was worried that the interior of the hotel looked a bit tired (I had seen this on previous reviews ) however… this all changed and very quickly, we had an amazing 3 nights! The facilities are fantastic, the hotel itself is SPOTLESS and I mean spotlessly clean . The food is to a high standard and the breakfast was amazing! Hot and cold buffet options plus you can order a breakfast from a menu they had available. I think what really makes the hotel special are the staff ! They are all incredible ! Barry and another young man (who wasn’t there on Tuesday when we checked out ) were just amazing and all the staff couldn’t do enough for you! The housekeeping staff were also so kind and welcoming . Dave on the bar an amazing chap! He’s done 29 years of service and you can tell he I very proud of what Cally Palace has to offer , I also observed how good he was with the younger members of staff and he was great with my little boy who was 7. There is a swimming pool and hot tub which is excellent and open all day! There is a great snooker table which looks new and a games chest which is in the main sitting room behind the sofa at the back of the room. There is a little town less than a mile away which has a lovely pub called the Murray arms and there’s a lovely coffee shop and other little shops . The only things I would mention that maybe could be a bit of feedback would be good to have the kids menu available all day (we ended up having lunch elsewhere as it’s only available in the evening) and the sofa and chairs in the middle of the reception area and sitting room really did need some attention.

- 442hilaryc (6/5): Beautiful surroundings - We were desperate for a break following some difficult medical treatment. We hoped to find a comfortable place in beautiful, peaceful surroundings and felt Cally Palace might fit the bill. In some senses it did: the building is impressive and in a lovely situation. We weren't allowed to check in until 3pm ( it said so on the booking, but it's always nice if you're allowed in your room if you arrive a little early) Anyway, no luck there, but that was the hotel's privilege. Our room was nice. It was a long way from reception, carrying our cases, with many stairs and doors to contend with. I knew my partner wouldn't be able to manage this for the duration of our stay, however once we'd negotiated the long journey, we found there was a door straight onto the car park just near our room, so that was all right then. A shame no one directed us that way. There were copies of the menu in the bedroom. I couldn't understand the difference between the a la carte menu and the Tasting Menu. Both seemed similar. There was quite a lot of fish choices, a veggie option or two, and not many meat choices. It was quite expensive and I was expecting it to be good. Staff in the dining room were pleasant and competent. There seemed to be enough of them and they didn't seem to be pressured at all. I intended to have Scallops then Langoustines for my dinner, but there weren't any Langoustines, so I ordered mussels instead. They were advertised as being served with a garlic cream sauce and served with crusty bread and matchstick chips. My scallop starter was fine, although it wasn't served with peashoots as described. The mussels were over cooked and coldish. The "cream sauce" was actually a thick, flour- based gloop. I didn't really want chips and crusty bread. This was just as well because they didn't materialise. My partner had a goats cheese starter and haddock and chips. They were OK. These modest choices plus a single portion of cheese & crackers took us over our total £60 dinner allowance and we paid the difference. Breakfast was a standard hotel buffet. Quite acceptable, but nothing exceptional. All in all I think the hotel should offer a table d'hote style menu for guests who've paid for dinner in advance, so no one is worried about going over their "allowance" We felt the hotel offered reasonable value , but the menu needed some attention.
- Curiosity661480 (8/5): Nearly a 5 star review - It was a lovely hotel set in beautiful grounds. Rooms extremely large with lovely views. The breakfast was delicious, however to run out of croissants at 9.10am isn't good form. A lengthy wait for bacon and mushrooms to arrive at the buffet. Also tea and coffee would be nicer brought to your table rather than waiting in a queue to dispense from a machine. On checkout I was presented with a bill that made no sense, and had to explain that the extras were only 4 breakfasts. Apart from these minor irritations we had a lovely time.
- Nicola (10/5): A great family stay - Stayed in a deluxe family room which was excellent. Very spacious with 2 large seperate bedrooms, hall and very large modern and beautifully finished bathroom. Smart technology mirrors in both bedrooms and good sized tvs. Beautiful views from the large windows and good storage in cupboards. Bathrobes and towels for the pool in the cupboards. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and glad we paid a bit extra for the deluxe room. We’ll definitely be back. Lovely traditional expansive entrance with lots of character. Great full sized snooker table room. Dining areas and conservatory all very nice and traditional. Swimming pool was a really good size, with good sized changing rooms. Lovely large windows overlooking the golf course. Jacuzzi was good but not the most modern. Sauna was out of order. Beautiful surroundings and lovely vast historical building. A nice walk through the woodland and past the golf course into Gatehouse. Overall really enjoyed our stay and will definitely return.

The room was spacious and very comfortable. Perfect for golfers as the hotel has its own course. The pool was out of action during our visit but looked a good size. We dined in the restaurant and the food was a good standard. Staff efficient and friendly.
- gordonmN7130EW (8/5): Still a great place to stay….. but - We’ve stayed at the Cally for years and it is still a great venue in wonderful surroundings with welcoming staff. But…. The thing that golfers need, and will remember, is good greens and they’re not good and the shame is that it’s a great track with some memorable holes. More golfers would return if the greens were better.

- gordontolland (10/5): Brilliant stay as always. Food, rooms and hospitality all superb. - Yet another fantastic week at Cally Palace, which remains comfortably dependable in all respects. It really is a wonderful Hotel in a super setting. There's lots to do. Golf, swimming, snooker, Pool, table tennis, Tennis (in the nearby village) and numerous walks & visits to historic places. Quite a lot of the superb staff who I've known for years & years remain in place, notwithstanding that the Hotel changed hands about 2 years ago. Many thanks as always to Robert, Billy, Dave & Steve, Lucy and everyone for making the stay so enjoyable. The rooms were immaculate as usual, and the food is pretty good as well. Also, the Wi-Fi (previously a bit dodgy) seems to be much improved. The Snooker table has been refurbished in the last 2 years, albeit some of the equipment (such as cues and rests) needs replaced. Perhaps also a new table tennis net would not go amiss either. The Golf course seems to have undergone improvement too, albeit the 13th is still horrendously testing - perhaps that's because I'm not very good at golf!!! Breakfast is still superb. It's much more efficient now with "self-service" for the cooked breakfast items but specialised things such as Eggs benedict or Kippers can still be ordered as usual. I'm not entirely sure about having another Dining Room in addition to the age-old one, but it didn't really bother me. As I've said for about 15 years, the lighting in the main Dining Room could be SO much better. It needs to be far less bright, and candles on the tables would be a very nice touch. I also miss the live Pianist at dinner, but perhaps it's not practical to bring that back. All in all, Cally Palace remains a wonderful place to stay, particularly at the reasonable prices, and I recommend it to everyone.

- cmvintage57 (10/5): Wonderful! - We were given an overnight as a Xmas present. We upgraded to a deluxe room for £30 and what a room we got! Room 58, biggest room we have ever stayed in , so comfortable with amazing views over back of hotel. Dinner was delicious as was breakfast. We must mention Nat in the dining room who made sure my husband got what he wanted which wasn't actually on menu. Would totally recommend this hotel, truly amazing place.
