- Mogotsi (10/5): - The proper was exceptional, the staff was always there to help. Excellent sea view on a tranquil area. Loved it. Will always come back with the fam. Very nice.
- Janice (1/5): - NA In reference to booking:
I would to formally like to complain about a very dissappointing stay at Grotto Bay.
As formally agreed with the owner, any extra guests would be paid for. When extra guests arrived, the security had been informed that they were not allowed to enter for almost a whole hour... after driving all the way from the city in the evening it is upsetting and unfair concidering the owner had previously consented at various points of our communications... I paid as I had stated and still they needed to wait...
Before arrival, the host informed me that the oven would be fixed the second day. On the second day of our stay I messaged the host and he stated that he could only come to fix the issue on the third day.
The sinks in the kitchen kept flooding, starting on day 1. The bathroom toilet for the first room kept clogging ... on the Sunday, my niece took a shower, and after 5 minutes of running the shower flooded and water ran through the floor boards into the living room within 4 minutes. We recorded this and, and immediately notified the owner. He called immediatley, citing that we flooded his "maliciously"...
I explained that it ran over after less then 5 minutes... he said that as He is a man of God, and as we are not of faith we do things maliciously... I explained that it was malicious and would report this comment...
He called back later and "apologised" saying he needs to work on himself...
The host sent the plumber the next morning... the plumber explained that the shower had a too small cup, the sink trap was leaking, the toilet clogged because the water ran in the wrong direction, causing clogging and obstruction, so water was stalled from flowing. Blaming guests for inept construction and plumbing by "a man of faith" is uncalled and ruined an expensive family vacation and left my niece in tears and everyone in our group unhappy!
My family paid alot of money.

- Jordan (6/5): Was short & sweet - I like that it was secure & spacious. It was spacious (although I think we got a different/bigger room than we booked). Didn’t provide anything “extra” like soap in the shower, there were no bowls so had our cereal out of a mug & the top 3 stairs felt a bit unstable.
- Murray (7/5): Good - Setting was spot on Noisey freezer
- Kim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mukondi (6/5): Pleasant -
- Mari (9/5): Superb -
- Johan (1/5): No power, because owner did not pay for pre paid power - Owners attitude
- Rishay (7/5): Friendly Home style stay - Lovely location, right on the beach. No back-up power. Property grounds are in a poor untidy state
- Eunice (7/5): Good - The rooms were spacious Loadshedding, most of the time we spent in our apartments at night was darkness, perhaps you could invest in a solar or battery system or even rechargeable light bulbs to make it better.
Also did not see the toiletries and iron that were stated on the booking confirmation, a bit disappointing.
No coffee and sugar in the rooms, a little as a welcome gift would have been appreciated
- Ferreira (4/5): will go back but will not use this accommodation - rather pay more for other places on premisses - the sea and the silence at Grotto Bay space too tight for 4 people, no place to sit in the unit like a sofa to sit on and relax (the one provide was used for a bed) only chairs where you could sit is at the table. Not really a view to look at. Braai facilities is bad, We have to walk around the building to find place to make fire for a braai.
Difficult to braai in front of main building when few other people was sitting in the dining room and lounge every evening and looking at you all the time and uses the braai for quite awhile.
Lack of privacy definitely a problem
UNIT: could recommend a larger fridge, not enough space for your ice and meat/food that needs a freezer
I choose a unit by the options given on booking.com, but I didn't receive the unit I've chosen. Does it matter if you are for instance two people and you prefer a large unit for the comfort and you are willing to pay the price as advertised???
- Vesa (1/5): A scam and the staff was absolutely awful. - The staff vas incredible rude!! Our place looked like it had not been cleaned in a very long time and the atmosphere was very hostile.
- Ayanda (10/5): The place is very quiet and private with good view. The owner upgraded our booking on arriival ❤️. - We made our own breakfast Everything was fine
- Siddons (5/5): Disappointing - Khumalo very good , lovely decor We didn't get the room we booked. Communal living area , crowded with children.
- Elizna_lee-ann (9/5): Superb -
- Slabber (3/5): Poor - The location The host were very nice at first. They do make it very obvious tho that they are running a business
. everything is charged for.. including salt and pepper at R10 or a piece of firelighthers for R5. If you want to borrow their braai grid and tongs you will have to fork out R55 to use it in the shared braai facility. There are tuckshop style pricelists everywhere... it did not come as a surprise that we were charged exra after we left for our laudry (white) for being exceptionally dirty(not sure what an exceptable level of dirt is?). i am refering to a bathmat that was used for 4 days by 2 adults and 2 children... with the added rain outside.. i was not aware that jik costs R300. The way the situation was handeled with threats from the pastor husband was unexceptable. Once the money was paid i was extended an invite to their other guesthouse in langebaan... money is really the top priority here .. and we felt it every minute we were there.
- Ziyanda (8/5): Very good -
- Ilse (7/5): Comfortable - The view is stunning. Did not have breakfast or dinner... But will try next time. Even if only a room. Koffie facilities would be nice in the room.. Bathroom not on suite, though private.
- Jacobs (8/5): Very good - Access to the beach
- Harold (7/5): Good - Beds comfortable and parking ok Could have placed tv in the room floors were noisy and we could hear the neighbour's light switches behind the bed so not easy to reach
- Sheetal (5/5): We enjoyed our one night very much - nice location. The host was very friendly. Not the best equipped for load shedding, you can’t cook during power outages.
- Chris (9/5): Superb -
- Mari (10/5): A roadtrip and breakaway with my bestie. This was just what was neededd! Angela kept us informed with what to expect whe - Lovely place & scenic surroundings!
- Selina (7/5): Good value for money and a great and isolated location - Separate living area from sleeping area, comfortable bed, close to the beach, surrounding is quiet. The fridge was loud, the wooden floor makes noises, thin walls, the light switch is on a bad position, difficult to set the shower to the right now temperature.
- Sheldon (8/5): Very good -
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bruce (7/5): Good -
- Grace (10/5): Exceptional - Liked the room had everything we needed and assistance was readily available The parking was a little difficult, space is small
- Adre (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adams (7/5): nice and clean, but a bit uncomfortable - the seaview we weren’t allowed to use their wine glasses, but we dis
- Jack (2/5): Robby can be more accommodative and friendly to address my concerns - The owner was not friendly, never replied to my email. Poor service delivery, poor manners A lack of communication and reply to my request
- Andreas (9/5): Superb - Nice view from braai area.
Friendly people
- Christian (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (9/5): Beautiful place for a comfortable, welcoming stay - The location inside the nature reserve, and a short walk from the beach is perfect for a short break-away.
The advice/recommendations from the owners / host should be acted upon. They are excellent and engaging.
A great weekend away for our family! Wooden floors and ceilings make for sound-sensitive areas so you can hear your neighbours. No issues with quiet time rules though
- Andrew (10/5): Perfect, peaceful, placid place of rest & timelessness - Peaceful, beautiful surroundings, owners & assistant were all just super people.
- Jamie (7/5): Good -
- Michael (8/5): Very good - Good No toilet upstairs
- Verna (2/5): Very poor -
- Magdalena (6/5): Great stay in Grotto Bay - Our host Angela was very warm and welcoming. We enjoyed our one nite stay. Beautiful view of the ocean. N/A
- Willem (4/5): Not worth the money - Nature Blocked toilet, Broken Bath, No towls, after asking very dirty towls, Sharing house, dirty mugs, stinking fridge, dirty cutlery and dish cloth. Not what we expected.
- Jessica (2/5): Very poor - The only good thing about this place is the sweet and wonderful staff. The caretaker went out of his way to try help me make things more comfortable. The room walls are extremely thin, and you feel like you might as well be in the living room of the person next door. You can hear EVERYTHING, from conversations, to toilet habits.
This is NOT family friendly, or a place you want to take kids. My child could not even play outside, as it's too loud.
I had to force my child to whisper and not play our entire stay.
Extremely stifling.
The rooms have no view
The communal area has the view, but you get the feeling you are NOT welcome there. At all.
The owners were both extremely rude and made us feel extremely awkward.
- Lynton (7/5): Good -
- Derick (9/5): Great beach view position - Amazing position with views, great hosts and ability to warm up food. Very reasonably priced. Be aware it is room only price, you can order breakfast which is charged for separately. Bring your own food as there are no shops or restaurants nearby. No coffee facilities in the room, when offered a coffee later by the host, I was charged for it. The headboard looked great, but creeks when leaned on.
- Nel (8/5): Very good -
- Toriq (8/5): Very good -
- Imtiyaaz (8/5): Very good -
- Saaiman (8/5): Very good -
- Wendy (6/5): Pleasant - Pretty area, secluded beaches, quiet. The unit didn't have much of a view, felt very claustrophobic. I personally couldn't wait to leave and head for the next place on our journey. The only bit of view of the bush and the sea was from the top room. Having to share a veranda and a possible glimpse of the sea/sunset with other guests was not pleasant, we felt we were invading their space and I'm sure they felt the same. The host also braaied for us, which was a bit strange, we are used to having our own braai and doing our meat the way we like it. It cost us R1900 for one evening, which was way over what it was worth.
- Anton (4/5): Beautiful accommodation but an unpleasant stay! - Guesthouse styled accommodation with beautiful rooms and stunning views. Clean and neat in a safe gated reserve. Checking in was sadly very unpleasant with security being sent by the owner to ask what we are doing there, after I showed the security the Booking.com confirmation. Even though the owners explained and defended their actions, we cancelled our second nights stay with them, as we did not feel treated as a paying guest should. I truly hope that the owners improve on their customer service etiquette.
- Damien (1/5): Unwelcomed - None Traveling by bicycle, I reached at midday.
Asked just to drop my bicycle to hike untill checkin time.
Got replied : Don't want to talk to anyone, checkin time 2pm !
No restaurant next to Grotto bay to wait for 2hours with a bicycle.
Had to move to next town. Of course no refund of anykind.
- Aivis (7/5): Good - Location close to the beach, nice views, parking space. While being located in a secluded and serene area, this guesthouse had a vibe of a transit hotel with visitors coming and going. Thin walls and shared spaces made our stay not as private as we hoped. Bring some food items (especially if you are with kids), since the nearest supermarket/ restaurant is at least 20min drive away (alternatively, the owner can cook - though it is overpriced).
- Xander (7/5): Good -
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional -
- Khanyisa (4/5): Bad Stay - There is Actually nothing to like about it honestly. The Awful smell that was coming through the pipes in the kitchen Zinc. The fact that we had to shower with cold water half of our stay there, we only got hot water once and that was after having to call the owner to complain about it.she asked if I don't mind going to shower upstairs since there is hot water there, the worst decision I've ever made, the shower was even Worse the walls are dirty it is so tiny and stinks... The place is not clean honestly the staff don't even pay attention to that as we were given dirty towels and sheets also had dirty spots on them.
Worse we needed water and they did not have stock to sell to us, instead we were sold a glass of water for R15,soap refill is also charged at R10, No extra Tissue incase you run out we had to go buy our own. Like anything you need there you must pay for it of which I don't even understand why would you charge your guest for braai tongs yet you claim to be a self catering unit.
Not to mention the fact that the walls in the rooms are so thin you actually here every conversation from the other rooms word for word, and the wooden floor does not do it any justice. So if you want some peace and quiet Moment this is definitely not the place to book.
I think they need to give themselves time to properly Deep clean the place as it is too dirty and clustered.
- Carel (4/5): Disappointing - The room was right below the owners living quarters... Heard all the footsteps and noises.
- Henry (8/5): Very good -
- Simone (7/5): Good -
- Malieta (8/5): Very good -
- Leon (9/5): Superb -
- Malieta (9/5): Superb -
- Dredd445 (8/5): Awesome break-away - The location is very scenic and a 2 minute walk to the beach. That there were no shops to get even basic amenities
- Nikolai (10/5): Much more than I expected! - Wonderful hosts and beautiful and quiet location.😎 -
- Nan (1/5): Bad -
- Uwe (9/5): Superb -
- Frans (7/5): Good -
- Bester (1/5): Bad -
- Christopher (9/5): Superb -
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Juanita (9/5): Superb -
- Coral (6/5): Pleasant - Location was good and hosts pleasant The facility does not offer a TV as advertised and kitchen not well catered for very basic. No welcome coffee and tea in the room and no complimentary bath accessories. Paying for the braai grill and tongs in my opinion is ludicrous.
- Kim (4/5): Disappointing - Good view close to the beach Pictures and description were not as portrayed on the site. The assumption was private self catering with your own entertainment area this was not the case its a guest house and everything is communal. TV was broken. If you sneezed you could hear it from 3 Doors down. No tea or coffee in the room. Everything was at an extra cost including the use of salt and pepper, braai grid, tongs and dishes if left in your unit. Quiet time from 10pm.
- Jeremy (8/5): Coastal comfort - Great location, easy access to the coast walking tracks. Breakfast with a view of the ocean. The wildlife in the area a bonus to the views.
- Langley (8/5): Very good -
- Elize (1/5): Bad -
- Joshua (1/5): Depressing. - Absolutely nothing. Guesthouse was wooden so could hear guest on tops every move. Hosts were terrible and made things uncomfortable. Robbie is just a con artist and tries to make an extra buck from his rat invested guest house.
- Elena (10/5): Super cozy guesthouse with great views, better food and even better hosts! - Beautiful and very cozy apartment in the guesthouse. Everything was clean and very welcoming. The common areas were also home-like and the location, next to the beach with a perfect sunset view, as well. The hospitality of Angela and Robbie can’t be overstated, incredible hosts, super kind and very attentive to everything. The pasta (vegetarian) and the coffees were also a perfect way to end and start the day, sitting in the porch and enjoying the views of Grotto Bay.
We can’t buy recommend this guesthouse, for couples and for families.
Thank you Robbie, thank you Angela. EVERYTHING was great.
- Danie (7/5): Good -
- Estie (1/5): Bad -
- Walsh (5/5): fine for 1 night stay, host was responsive and accommodating - love the location, proximity to flowers in west coast reserve run like a low cost airline , expect to pay extra for everything - early check-in, use of the braai or salt and pepper. lots of rules and notes about what not to do.
- Paul (8/5): good relaxing time - located well, friendly, helpful
- Marie (8/5): Beautiful stay - The Double Room is very comfortable and spacious. The nature reserve is gorgeous and the 2 minute walk to the beach is just a treat! It's a perfect place to unwind, but to also use as a base to discover the surrounding area. There's nothing to complain about. We would recommend, however, if you are sensitive to brackish water, to bring your own bottled water.
- Hilsje (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly owners, beautiful view and close to watching the flowers in the surrounding areas. The bed was very comfortable to sleep on. We had a fantastic stay. Nothing to mention. All was good.
- Kyle (10/5): Grotto Bays Best find. #N01 - The personal involvement from Robbie and Angela was amazing. They are super friendly and an amazing couple. Cuppachino was amazing. Just an amazing place. Great value for money. Will be back again and again I didn't like the fact that I only booked 1 night.
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (8/5): had a great time - very clean and quiet environment
- Cedric (5/5): Passable -
- Julie (9/5): A quick but restful, one-night getaway close to Cape Town but feels a million miles away. - Beautiful spot with uninterrupted views and the best sunset I have ever seen! We even saw some whales out to sea. The property is well situated, clean and comfortable. I would have loved tea/coffee making facilities in our room, this seemed to only be offered in the outside units. I wasn't aware that our bathroom was not ensuite, I may have missed this in the booking however, I just wasn't expecting that. This seemed to be the case only for our room though as others are ensuite.
- Candace (7/5): Good -
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We were upgraded to the family room, which was great, the only concern was going up and down the steep staircase having to access the kitchen and bathroom, and there is no TV in the bedroom. Something I did not see mentioned in the reviews I looked at was that the nearest shops are 20km away, in Ysterfontein.
- Lourens (4/5): NO VOLUME CONTROL! - I did not gather from the advert by Hotels.Com that it was a room in the private residence of somebody. Whilst the room and amenities were satisfactory the owner spoiled the whole experience. She is loud and inconsiderate to the peaceful surrounds of the premises.
