Guest Reviews
- Steve (10/5): - The Inn and its staff and the food were excellent, very helpful and friendly.
The position was perfect.
- Judith (10/5): - it was an interesting old building, thefood was excellent.
Brendan was very heplful and friendly, as were some of the locals.
- Elliott (10/5): - Friendly welcome Superb walk up far easedale look round grasmere such a nice village followed by an excellent meal in the travellers rest
- Michael (10/5): - Great atmosphere, excellent food.
- Julian (10/5): - Location
- John (10/5): - Excellent attention to detail from the team
- Neil (8/5): - Nice inn
Bed very squeaky
Bathroom average
- Rosalyn (8/5): - Excellent position away from the bustle of the town but walkable. Excellent food!
- Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointing stay - The bedroom was small, with a tiny ensuite. The mattress was flimsy and very uncomfortable. The hotel sits on a busy main road and the traffic noise keeps you awake.
We stayed two nights and when our room was cleaned the shower gel wasn't restocked so had nothing to clean ourselves with. The shower itself is awful, with no water pressure, and the shower head isn't attached properly, so water comes out the top of it. The toilet seat doesn't work properly and keeps closing on itself, so hits you in the back when you sit on it.
Breakfast was disappointing - I had the Eggs Royale and the poached egg was hard and they didn't even toast the mufffin - not worth the extra £13 we paid each for breakfast.
All in all it wasn't a great stay and I wouldn't stay here again or recommend it to anyone, unless you're after somewhere really basic. Definitely wasn't worth the money.
We spent most of our stay at The Swan just down the road (which roughly costs the same) and if we ever return to the area we will stay there instead.
- Tariq (6/5): - The entrance was stinking with wine or some other foul smell which we couldn’t withstand. The beds were too small although it says double bed.
Rest was good, the washrooms were clean and the towels as well.
- Jeff (8/5): - What a charming property. An old inn so it should be expected it is not modern but has been sensitively maintained. Staff were helpful and the manager was very hospitable. Food was exceptional. If you want a more traditional stay in a lovely location within the Lakes I would recommend
- Paul (10/5): - As it was an old property it had lots of character
- Heather (10/5): - What’s not to love about this place! Quirky, amazing food and drinks, fantastic location, dog friendly and wonderful staff!!
- Pauline (8/5): - Our evening meal was not good, but staff handled it ok.
- Daniel (10/5): - Absolutely stunning location , lovely lovely staff and beautiful rooms , couldn’t have asked for a better stay ! Thank you to everyone there for making our trip very memorable
- Dawn (10/5): - The location was brilliant for visiting in and around Grasmere, a few minutes walk away. The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The room was cosy and had everything needed. Had evening meal and breakfast - both fantastic. Would highly recommend.
- Kathryn (10/5): - We very much enjoyed our two night stay that included an amazing hike that started right out front of the Inn. Our room was lovely but a tad noisey as the Inn is right on the road. It quiets down at night. We had realfast and dinner on site and all were delicious! A cozy spot very easily reached without a car.
- Alan (10/5): - Staff are amazing at this place, I very rarely leave a tip but I did here!
- KERRY (10/5): Excellent Stay - Excellent room, excellent food, excellent people. Lovely stay!!
- Diane (8/5): Lovely Inn - Great little place for an overnight stop. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. Room was compact, but clean and quiet.
- Christopher (10/5): - Friendly, good food, and great location
- carole (6/5): Just ok - Very very limited menu, rooms are very small, and the toilet is inside a cupboard door?.
- Bernadette (10/5): Great overnight stay - Staff amazing si friendly and attentive. Loved my room. The atmosphere in the public area was relaxed
- Beverley (6/5): Very rigid corporate rules, staff very polite - Stayed with dog for one night before doing a long distance walk over to ulswater. Wasn’t able to leave my car on car
Park for an extra day till I could return for it. Had to buy a 3 day pass to park in grasmere at an additional cost of £20.20.Had to pay £10 extra for the dog which I didn’t mind paying but after paying full breakfast price for myself and only opting for a bowl porridge would even let me order an extra sausage for the dog.
- Cheryl (8/5): - Fantastic staff and food. Great location
- Kevin (10/5): Highly recommended - Warm cosy room with great views. Fantastic breakfast and dinner the evening before in an atmospheric traditional pub. Great friendly staff and in a great location.
- Paul (10/5): 3 Night Stay - A very old style country pub serving excellent food and local beers run by extremely friendly & helpful staff
- Jonathan (10/5): - Very helpful and welcoming staff, great food. Perfect for walking and getting out on the fells around Grasmere.
- julie (10/5): Lovely hikers pub cosey bnb stay - Lovely pub for a 1 night stay with my mum. Enjoyed a lovely pub meal with excellent friendly service
- Diane (10/5): Perfect stay - A nice bijou room tastefully decorated, comfortable and clean.
Would definitely stay again.
Breakfast was very good too.
We had an evening meal at night and would highly recommend booking ahead too.
- Kenneth (10/5): A Great Place To Stay. - This is a very welcoming hotel. Ample on site parking and super dog friendly. Everyone of the staff delivered a high standard of customer service. Food is excellent. We stayed in a standard sized room which was very clean and comfortable. I will return but next time I will go for a larger room as I found the standard sized room bathroom a bit small for my large size frame ( I’m over six feet tall. ).
- Daniel (8/5): Nice place to stay - Lovely facilities and great atmosphere. Easy check in/out and clean room.
The only issue I had was that the room itself was very cold throughout the night. But I did make the booking fairly last minute so it’s possible this was an oversight.
- Geoffrey (10/5): Westmorland hospitality at it’s best. - Wonderful Westmorland hospitality.
Nice real fire in the Bar, so welcome on an Autumn evening. Chats with local regulars.
Beautiful room. Excellent menu and eventual meal plus brilliant choice of wine with no overpricing.
Excellent breakfast to complete our visit.
- Nicholas (10/5): - Great place to stay for a rest after a week walking.
Regards
- Helen (6/5): - Have stayed hear twice yearly for past 3 years but sadly found the room this time looked quite shabby in places & needing upgrade - especially in shower room Sad as i liked this place
- Jason (10/5): - Beautiful place to stay in a very beautiful area of the Lake District. Room was perfect staff and service was amazing. Food was also lovely will definitely be staying again when I visit the area
- Julie (6/5): - The welcome was good, and all the staff were friendly and helpful. The room had everything in it we needed, but was rather tired, and the bathroom needed some minor repairs. The water was hot whenever we needed it.
The food was excellent.
- Rose (10/5): - Pub was amazing. Food was first class. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Service all around was really amazing. Would definitely recommend to friends and family ❤️
- Robert (10/5): - Wonderful overnight stay. Free parking adjacent to property. Nice building with relaxed vibe. Even the background music was different and interesting. Evening meal very tasty and well presented. Ambiance very nice. Bedroom good size, comfortable large bed, and quiet. Breakfast (we had pancakes, back bacon and maple syrup with berries) was superb. Would definitely stay again. Highly recommended. .
- Stuart (8/5): - A very welcoming inn with friendly, helpful staff and a warm atmosphere. Bedroom was a bit basic but very clean and comfortable. The breakfasts are absolutely superb!
- paul (6/5): - For the cost of the room, I was bitterly disappointed with the standard of the room. The photographs on the website do not remotely represent the actual room we got. The room stank of dogs, the en-suite bathroom was particularly dirty and run Down, mouldy ceiling sink cupboard doors damaged beyond repair by water damage. The toilet was unclean, the fan was useless and unsuitable for getting rid of the built up steam and giving adequate ventilation but in general, the whole room was generally run down.
- Joss (10/5): - Great stay in some nasty weather with my dog. Fish and chips were outstanding and the service was brilliant!
- Kate (10/5): - Lovely, dog friendly stay. Excellent food in the restaurant downstairs. Lovely staff. Thank you.
- Kathleen (6/5): - The room and en suite were extremely small.
- Robert (10/5): - This inn is quaint in a way that makes it perfect for anyone visiting Grasmere. It is not fancy, but is very comfortable and has excellent staff. I would gladly stay here for a week or more.
- Harry (10/5): - The staff were absolutely fantastic. Very accommodating. The restaurant serves wonderful food, with all special requests adhered to. A great break away.
- DARREN (10/5): Return to a little bit of heaven - The check in was simple, with clear instructions provided in the room. Access to good quality WiFi was again simple.
I ate in the pub for breakfast and dinner, it was easy to put my dinner bill and associated drinks on my bill.
All the staff were friendly and relaxed, despite being a busy bank holiday weekend, which is a credit to them.
All the food was fantastic, served hot and without too much of a wait. The staff were on it and keen to give you a good stay.
I would definitely stay again!
- Margaret (8/5): - Great place to stay and we would happily rebook next time we are in the area. The staff were lovely, and the food ( breakfast and dinner was good )
- Annette (10/5): Lovely cozy pub - I am a repeat guest. Lovely cozy pub in a good location with decent sized car park and short walk into Grasmere. Excellent food. Lovely staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): Charming pub in stunning location. - A fantastic location. The views from the rooms were stunning. Generally peaceful (slight road noise, but nothing to worry about at night!). Breakfast was wonderful. Very tasty and good menu.
The pub itself is very charming. Open fires, great food! Perfect location for a stay. Bus stop not far from pub with links to Keswick and Ambleside/Windermere. Footpath directly opposite.
I feel the room was becoming a little tired but generally good quality. Grouting missing from floor tiles in bathroom, extractor fan seemed to not work. Could do with better places for bedside plugs for phone charging.
Comfy bed. Slept very well.
- D J (10/5): Great location, great service - I loved this place. I had passed by it many times, but it was the first time I had stayed. Great location, friendly staff, everything a walker needs
- Tim (10/5): - Very good
- David (8/5): - We stayed at the Traveller's Rest Inn for one night recently, and were impressed with the friendliness of the staff, the location and the extremely high quality of the meals we were served. We ate in the restaurant for our evening meal, and were really impressed with the service, presentation and quality of the food. Our breakfast the following morning was equally as good, with a very substantial and tasty full Cumbrian.
Our room was comfortable, with pleasant decor, but I would also say that maybe a little more attention to detail is required with the cleaning, as we did find a few grubby marks on the doors in our room. However, this did not spoil what was a very pleasant stay at the Traveller's Rest.
- Jon (10/5): 3 day mini break - Lovely traditional inn , comfy beds , great staff , good food and beer , 15/20 minutes walk into grasmere
- Debbie (10/5): - Fantastic stay, food was excellent, rooms cosy and very clean. Staff were wonderful and very friendly they even dried our swimming kit in the boiler room over night 😃. Great value for money and we will definitely return.
- Joseph (10/5): - Just enjoyed a 2 night stay here. Very friendly & helpful staff, the room was clean, bed very comfy. The food was very nice & reasonably priced. Great location within 10-15 mins of Ambleside, Windermere & around 20 mins to Keswick. Will definitely come back.
- Zoe (10/5): - Fantastic place to stay with stunning views. The staff were so lovely, helpful and friendly and couldn’t do enough to make us welcome and ensure our stay was enjoyable.
- Lewis (2/5): - .
- Manuel (8/5): - It's a very lovely place in the midst of the Lake District with hiking trails and Grasmere (20min) very close by. The building is quite old and very charming and the room was cozy. The didn't dine here, but the pints wear tasteful. Breakfast was good, but some could have been more fresh.
- Jan (10/5): Lovely place - We had a lovely time, the room was very clean and comfortable. The restaurant in the inn is very good, and there are many places to visit nearby.
- Brian (10/5): Great stay - Very nice stay at the Inn. Ideally situated for easy visits to Grasmere, Ambleside & Keswick.
Friendly staff, lovely breakfast, plenty parking, dog friendly and reasonable prices.
Would definitely recommend
- Bernadette (10/5): Great Experience would love to return - This was my first trip on my own since my partner died in September. I needed to bite the bullet and see if I could visit they Lakes on my own.
I have to say it was a huge success. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was extremely clean and comfortable. In fact to my surprise, even though I was alone in a different place, I slept really well.
My dinner was absolutely delicious, I opted for a venison burger and after that didn’t have room for afters.
After dinner, I felt really comfortable and relaxed in the lounge reading with a drink.
I pre-paid for breakfast and the menu was really nice. I decided to have porridge as my 'cooked' option and helped myself to a slice of toast and glass of orange juice from the buffet table.
The hotel offers great value for money, and
I would definitely recommend the hotel to others and I would definitely return again as a 'solo' traveller.
- Lorraine (10/5): Faultless - We were here less than three weeks after our last visit. Our trips get closer together. Obviously, we love it! Everything is perfect- especially the staff. Thank you.
- Dawn Marie (8/5): - Down to earth friendly establishments. Food good.
- Bill (10/5): - Great staff, great food
- Andrew (10/5): - Brilliant break, lovely place, excellent food and the staff were lovely.
Our dog was made to feel so welcome.
- Deborah (8/5): - Had a lovely stay room was clean bed was a bit to hard for me and we kept knocking are knees on the sides of the beds could do with something on the corners food was lovely location was picturesque but we did get quite a bit of traffic as it was on a main road
- Lorraine (10/5): - The best! Cannot fault it. The staff are so lovely. Excellent food and comfy rooms. Thank you.
- Richard (10/5): - Great little pub b&b
- Chris (10/5): - Comfortable accommodation, good food and beer.
- philip (10/5): Great staff! - All staff were excellent from the start. Good rooms and restaurant.
- J (10/5): A peaceful retreat - What a wonderful couple of days myself, my wife and our beagle have just had at the Travellers Rest. Nothing is too much trouble. All the staff were so friendly and happy to help.
The food is excellent and I would highly recommend calling in even if its just to have a drink in comfortable surroundings with spectacular views. Thank you
- Manuel Marcelo Granado (10/5): - It is small enough where staff make you feel welcome. Lots of character. Some great walks nearby although a bit of a walk to centre of village.
- Michael (10/5): - Lovely location, friendly and helpful staff. Rooms clean and comfortable.
- Gareth (10/5): - The staff are excellent. The food is superb well cooked and presented. Just far enough out of the towns to be a nice quiet country retreat.
- Paul (10/5): - Great location, lovely staff, comfy bed and great food. Couldn’t have been better
- DONNA (10/5): - The staff were lovely and nothing was too much. The food was amazing so much so we ate there both nights of our stay.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Room smelt damp/foisty. Decor tired and not as advertised. Room cleanliness not good. However, staff pleasant and decent food.
- Sean (10/5): - Fantastic staff and great location
- Dawn (10/5): - First time in Grasmere and first time staying in the travellers rest …lovely place to visit !! The travellers rest is such a good find ,staff are so friendly and the bedrooms very clean and comfortable ….couldn’t fault the food ,had two very tasty evening meals and breakfast was spot on …would definitely recommend
- Edward (10/5): - Staff were great, food was good. Room was clean. Small but sufficient. We would recommend for sure. Thank you
- Daria (10/5): Good place to stay ! - Nice and comfy. Clean bathroom with good shower pressure. Nice location with a beautiful view to country side. Once downside is the room size, wish there was enough space for the languages.
- paul (8/5): - The location is wonderful as it’s nice and quiet!! Very accommodating to us and the dog and was kept clean and tidy. The food and service was excellent would rate it 6 stars if there was an option to. Our shower room needed a little bit of TLC albeit in full working order which would be the only negative comment I could make. All in all a wonderful stay and would happily recommend to others.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Not good value - Very small bathroom. The gap to get into the shower was not much more than a foot wide. The staff were nice and food good but definitely wouldn't stay there again.
- Amanda (10/5): - Perfect setting, brilliant room and view and amazing staff.
- Lorraine (10/5): - We love it here and have been many times. Last week our dog died and it was our go to place for solace. We went again this week and stayed for two nights. It is great for us. The staff are a delight, the food is excellent and the bed is extremely comfortable. And it's in a perfect spot. Can't ask for much more. As for dislikes, we don't have any but I would say for others that rooms 7 and 8 are quite loud early evening with music and chatting - though 8 is worse. It doesn't bother us but it might others. Just avoid those rooms if it would! We love it all. Thank you.
- Heather (10/5): - Comfortable room, helpful & friendly staff
- Nicholas (10/5): - Very pleased / convenient for Grasmere / quiet / very helpful staff / lovely breakfast / amazing views / basic accommodation but clean and affordable
- Phillippa (10/5): - A very nice historic pub/hotel with good food and friendly staff. Plenty of parking.
The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was modern and a good size.
It is conveniently situated on the main road just outside the village of Grasmere, so reaching other parts of the Lake District is easy. The rooms have double glazing but the road noise may be a problem for some people. It didn’t bother us.
- Rob (10/5): Perfect - In a word ‘Perfect’ very friendly & helpful staff, great beer & food, ( I recommend the lamb rump 🤗) & beautiful views, will definitely return 🤗🤗🤗
- EDWARD (8/5): Fantastic setting - The overall experience of staying at The Travellers Rest was very pleasant. The setting is fabulous, the room was quite comfortable and the proximity to Grasmere mde visiting the town very easy. The min concern we had was the price of breakfast compared to other hotels we have stayed in. We did not believe it was value for money.
- Michael (8/5): - Very friendly and clean hotel offering free carpark, outside space lovely breakfast and dinner menu. With amazing countryside views
- Amie (10/5): - Fantastic staff, amazing food and lovely bedroom
- Steve (10/5): Beutiful spot - Wonderful hotel just a short stroll from Beutiful Grasmere village. Friendly staff that couldn't do enough for us.
- Mark (10/5): Travellers rest , Grasmere - Fantastic breakfast and dinner. Spotless room and comfortable bed. Short walk into Grasmere and great local walks and scenery.
- Jane (10/5): Excellent view - Nice old pub, close to Grasmere. Staff all friendly and service good. Food good and breakfast very good.
- Helen (10/5): - Lovely cosy pub Great room Staff very friendly Lovely walk from pub to Grasmere - 20 minutes
- Lisa (8/5): Dog friendly stay - Great location , good food , nice comfortable room, freindly helpful staff and very dog friendly .
- David (6/5): - On arrival, parking was restricted due to workmen’s vans taking over half of the car park. Our superior double room was very noisy from traffic noise as it only had secondary glazing and faced the main road. The room was cold and we were not able to turn on the heating ourselves. At 5.30pm We complained to reception who then agreed to turn it on. It went off again at 8.30pm and did not resume until 7.30am the next morning. It was a really cold night.
- Mette (10/5): - Lovely stay and the service was amazing. We woke up looking at the mountains and it was just beautiful.
The only drawback was the shower which we named “monsoon shower” as it only had one setting for the pressure and it made the entire bathroom soaked within seconds. Other than that, we had the most amazing stay and would not hesitate to come back!
