Guest Reviews
- Harald (10/5): The coolest place ive ever been. - Its a historic gem 170 y.o. house in the coolest area. Of all my travels around the world and a lot of times to acores it was the coolest place i ever stayed. You feel like in a movie. The crazy windows and high ceiling is a dream.
The only downside is you need to know how to live in a old building next to water. I own one too so i know. In winter put one or more ac to heating a little and put one ac to demoisture or use the demoisture device. It will remove the water from the air that comes naturally from stone walls next to the water. After 1-2 days it will be nice. They had to build the lake houses like that 170 years ago. In summer the ac will demoisture anyway.

- julian (9/5): - the location and access to nearby garden was great. enough rooms for everyone and kitchen functioned as expected. nice gift basket upon arrival and very friendly, supportive staff as well as uncomplicated key handover.
The layaks are great and there are plenty of paddles and life vests. The bikes are all rather on the small side. Good enough to ride around the lake but going any further would probably be tiring. The house is drafty/damp (however, they have air conditioning heating and cooling in almost all rooms so you can stay warm easily). During our stay it stormed quite heavily and water would leak in through the windows. the dehumidifier was full every 7-8 hours or so. In the living room we were missing a large table to play games or eat, the only table is located in the kitchen.
- Esther (8/5): - De locatie direct aan het meer, privegebruik buiten opening van de naastgelegen tuin, gebruik van dr kanoes Het huis is wat vochtig en er zijn wat insecten, maar dit is passend bij de locatie en het klimaat
- matthew (6/5): READ THE WHOLE THING! - Look.... the location is obviously stunning; I had the whole house to myself (solo traveler) and the kayaks and bikes were a great addition. I guarantee you'll be the only person(s) kayaking on the lagoa if you rent this place...cuz I was...😊 It was moldy inside - it may have just been fumigated, as there was a chemical smell upon arrival that lasted almost all three days. Ants were in the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom after two nights, even though all I ate in the house was cheese and crackers, spilling no crumbs.
It's fairly rundown. There's not a lot of maintenance occuring on this place.
There is not as much privacy as you think - the gardener/caretaker and cleaning lady were in and out of the basement, coming in and out of the gate. People were constantly walking by...one flew her drone right by the rear (private side) windows when I was partially dressed.
The air conditioning DID NOT WORK. The remotes to the A/C did not work. I put the screens in the windows. Mosquitos and gnats got in and I had numerous bites in a.m.
Seriously, put one USB port in a few rooms - it's a very inexpensive upgrade.
It was a unique experience; a 6 means I enjoyed it. I would not stay again - I'm glad the people I invited to join me were unable to make it, as it would have been embarrassingly shoddy...
- Nati (10/5): - Amazing location right by the lake—truly couldn’t ask for better. We had a wonderful stay at Casa dos Barcos. The house is perfectly situated, comfortable for a family, and comes with extras like kayaks and bikes, which made our visit even more enjoyable. We had a great time and genuinely believe this is one of the best places to stay in Furnas. Just a couple of small notes: being right by the lake, it's natural to encounter some flying insects. Also, while the house's age adds to its charm, a bit of additional upkeep could enhance the overall experience.
- Raquel (10/5): Exceptional - The location is stunning! What a privilege! And the possibility to visit at any time the Jardim José de Canto is priceless. A truly magical place impossible to forget.
- Alexandra (10/5): Casa dos Barcos: Far from common, utterly wonderful. A truly memorable escape! - What a wonderfully uncommon find Casa dos Barcos is! The house, the breathtaking lakeside location, and the serene private garden with Camellias and many other plants and trees truly made for an unforgettable experience. And the thoughtful basket of local treats was such a lovely touch. Thank you for everything!
- Maxime (9/5): Superb - A beautiful house, much larger than expected, in a stunning location, with everything you might need (including a generous welcome basket). The master bed is good but the upstairs beds, less so.
- Graham (9/5): Absolutely loved spending time in and around this unique house and waking every day to the fantastic views. - Fabulous lake views and outside space. Lots of interior space. Well stocked kitchen. Use of kayaks and bicycles. Key to botanical gardens. Off road parking. Unique property with history. Great walks immediately outside the door. Friendly hosts and nice welcome pack and essentials. Slight dampness but dehumidifiers enough to keep it in check. Bicycles great but in need of basic attention / repair. Limited storage in downstairs bedroom but plenty in adjacent living room. Outside furniture could do with upgrading.
- Ross (10/5): Totally amazing house and location! - Totally amazing house and location. Enjoyed provision of bikes and kayaks. Loved the access to the botanical gardens.
- Briney (10/5): A memorable stay at an historically unique treasure - This is a special, historic Lakeside house that leaves long and fond memories after days of discovery and fun. Although the owners are not close the staff at the adjacent park are available daylight hours and extremely helpful. We did not have enough warm weather in April to enjoy paddling in the lake, but we found the adjacent arboretum-like park always inviting, especially the one hour hike to the water fall. As expected, the half day trips to Nordest with its cliff hanging manicured parks above the ocean and historic Povoacao were fun and memorable. We did not do well with the food choices in Furnas town.
- Laura (8/5): Very good - staff was great, reception went well. very nice snacks left in kitchen and the kitchen was excellently stocked with cooking things, utensils and basic things like napkins, salt and pepper etc. Check in was easy. The location is amazing - right on Lagoa Furnas. It is a 15 minute drive to Furnas so not good if you want to walk to stores and restaurants. It was a bit damp at first but I think no one had been there for a bit before us. Fridge not working well at first but they were great at getting someone in to look at it.
- Katrin (9/5): Nice stay along the lake - We actually did not know we booked the entire house. The location was great, it offeres a lot- bikes, canoes, amazing garden, lake views, so we replanned our staying to explore the surroundings more. And it was definetely a good idea. We appreciated the keys to the garden so we could explore it all along and there is much to see: it is beautiful!. We also appreciated the gesture of showing us the family chapel and upon our arrival a basket of local products. At times we had a feeling it was a bit loud - due to heating or the roads nearby.
- Aleta (8/5): Charming - This is a beautiful and historic home. It shows up in all the pictures of Lago Furnas and it's really cool to stay in an iconic home. The home is large a spacious and the value for the money was unbeatable. Having private access to the garden was delightful as we did an evening walk after closing and it felt really special to have the place to ourselves. There are also laundry facilities which were much appreciated. I would have loved to use the kayaks but with an infant and some very foggy weather we didn't get the chance.
Included photos of the home and our adventures in the garden adjacent to the property. We had a big rainstorm and there was a small amount of leakage into the bathroom. We alerted the staff. It's an old home in what feels like a rainforest so a bit of water is not shocking, but it something to be mindful of. If you want pristine everything look elsewhere. However, if you want a truly unique stay this is the place.
- Margaret (9/5): Superb - Amazing historical experience! Beautiful views. Extraordinary location by amazing park for walks. Very romantic. There are needs for upkeep of this historic site!
- Joanna (8/5): Historical house with an unbeatable lake view. House had everything we needed for a comfortable stay - Location and view. House had all of the amenities for a comfortable stay. We also loved the basket of fresh food and it was a lovely touch. We also liked how the stay included free access to Mata Jardim José do Canto
- Leonie (10/5): What a location...on a private estate on the edge of Lake! The kayaks and bikes were a bonus. -
- Thomas (9/5): Superb - Fantastic location by the lake and the botanical garden. Extremely beautiful surroundings. And wonderful with the free kayaks.
We really enjoyed our stay and everybody were so kind.
Also the basket with bread, milk and local specialities was a really nice treat. It was a little damp both inside and outside the house.
- Vitaly (9/5): Superb -
- Jonathan (9/5): Just great can't wait to return - The property is just what I look for when I'm traveling. So charming on the lakeside and all the history and gardens. The only comment I would make would be to upgrade the outdoor furniture from molded plastic to something more in keeping with the history and integrity of the property.
- Filip (10/5): Wonderful stay at Casa dos Barcos - We had a wonderful stay at Casa dos Barcos! The house is located in an amazing spot by the lake, and it comes with all the necessary amenities. We especially loved the beautiful botanical garden next door and the friendly staff. We highly recommend this place!
- Mags (9/5): Don't miss this slice of Azores history! - The beauty of the adjacent botanical garden is underrated! Such a historic feel to the cozy, sunlit kitchen. Quiet, warm, a delightful spot. Enjoyed kayaking on lagoa Furnas. Recommended! Had some plumbing issues that marred our escape from hassle, but they took care of it rapidly.
- Eliška (10/5): Exceptional - The atmosphere of the old beautiful house, the location by the lake, the beautiful botanical garden by your door (that you have keys from) with chickens and cows...everything was excellent. I highly recommend!
- Ghislaine (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic experience, beautiful old, well maintained house, comfortable beds, heating, and lake view. Very much appreciated welcome basket, which is like having breakfast included. Beautiful walk through the gardens to the waterfall. Sorry that this year we could not stay as long as last year.
- Ags (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely loved the stay in Casa Dos Barcos Furnas. We felt privileged to have the opportunity to stay there. The house has a history and it feels special. The owners left the food basket with the fabulous local produce, which was very much appreciated. We also had the acces to bicycles and kayaks which made our stay even more special. Every morning we would go to the garden opposite the goose to see the chickens that welcomed us running very excited. Very special stay. One of the kind. Loved every moment. Thank you 😊 Nothing
- Guennadi (8/5): Very good -
- Raul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marten (10/5): - One of our best stays ever, in a fantastic house with a lovely garden and a superb view over the lake. João, the grandson of the owners, was very helpful.
Cannot recommend it more highly, especially for those who love older houses, with high ceilings, wooden shutters, etc. For some things, perhaps it showed there no longer was a small army maintaining the estate, but to us that only added to the charm. Hope to come back!
- Jay (6/5): A very different experience but worth it - A unique historical home on a small lake. You'll find this place like no other you've been but a few things to consider. Ensure you talk to owners several days in advance to understand how to enter the property.
The home is located in a barricaded government park. All you have to do is creep your car very very close to the barricade and it will open up but I saw others intimidated and turn around. There was no one to greet me at home so I had to seek out a neighbour borrow a phone and find the owners, again this could have been avoided if the owners had reached out and provided an email address, meeting times, documentation etc.
Once you get settled you'll have a great time. It's well located for day trips throughout the island. The home is large with most amenities, many non-documented. The day I was leaving I found out there is a bike room and laundry in the locked basement. Not sure if you're allowed to use the laundry but its there. Lots of bugs so bring mosquito spray. Lots of considerations, but now I know them and plan to return again for more than 4 days this time.
