Guest Reviews
- Christine (10/5): - The owner is very kind and helpful. He picked us up and drove us to the station when we arrived and departed. Half a block to the ski shuttle. Get there a little early especially if there is fresh snow! Beds seemed older and I thought they were going to be uncomfortable, but I slept great and my back felt totally good in the morning. Good selection of places to eat nearby. Clean shower and Onsen downstairs. Comfortable common area. Far from konbini.
- 明 (8/5): エコーランドでお得に泊まれた - エコーランドの中にあるにも関わらず、とてもリーズナブルに宿泊できること。 トレイとシャワーは部屋についていない

- Mary (9/5): - It was like sharing a big Japanese home. Living area was great and included a grand piano. It was shared. Bathroom which was fine, Drying room and friendly helpful staff.made the stay memorable. Having to walk down a flight of stairs to ladies toilet. (There was a male one next to our room which I used often).

- Carissa (9/5): Great service, would happily stay again! - The owner was super helpful, helping us with luggage transfer and driving us around. The location was superb, down a quiet street and a 1 minute walk and you’re on the Main Street
- ashling (10/5): - The place was so cozy and cute. The facilities were pristine and the host was absolutely amazing! He went above and beyond to assist us. It was the details that made it so special such as a lit fireplace and sleepy time music each night. I would recommend to all my family and friends!
- OBA (6/5): -
- Richards (10/5): Fantastic stay, our host was Absolutely amazing. Super clean, comfortable in a great location and the shared facilities -
- Greg (8/5): Very good -
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lilly (9/5): Great value for money and in the ideal location! - Friendly staff which are happy to help and made us instantly feel at home. There is a beautiful fire place in the common area which is perfect to sit by after a day on the mountain. The location is perfect and the room was spacious. There was only one shower for all the ladies at the property which made things a bit tricky but honestly wasn’t that much of an issue.
- Sawyer (10/5): I WILL return! …with friends. - The location was awesome, quiet and tucked away but 30 seconds to Main Street echoland. The downstairs common area was soothing and relaxing, warm and inviting. I can’t say enough about Matsua and his hospitality and willingness to help. I HIGHLY suggest Pension Marrionette for several reasons. I’m solo but had two beds and upstairs loft that was either for morning relaxing yoga or to house another two individuals. I hope I return and can enjoy the Marionette again soon. Everything was clean and well looked after. No complaints.
- Carson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Manuel (8/5): Very good - Nice place and great customer service. Rooms are spacious and exactly as pictured in the listing. Having the ability to pay for breakfast would be nice.
- Paula (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our stay here. Musata went above and beyond for us. Picking us up at the train station and even taking us to the luggage transport hub to get our luggage as they hadn't delivered it yet. Location is amazing. We knew when we booked it was single beds and they weren't the most comfy but they sufficed. Bathroom facilities were awesome. I didn't realize until the last day that there was a deep hot tub in the shower room! Ugggh it was amazing too, wish I had of used it every night lol. So if you go lift the lid in the shower to find a deep deep tub filled with the hottest water. Thankyou so much for a wonderful stay x
- Joshua (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lindy (10/5): 10/10 service, good location, friendly and accommodating staff! - I can’t explain enough how glad I am to have stayed at this property. I received amazing customer service throughout the stay, from check in to even after check out as I had left a few important things behind! Staff were so friendly. Communication was great, with fast responses through the app. In person, google translate also worked a treat. I loved that there was hot water and green tea available to drink. Location was great, just a short walk away from the shuttle buses to the snow fields. I would definitely stay here again, based on the customer service alone! Nothing
- Brendan (8/5): Great place for a large group - Great spot in the middle of echoland. Massa is a lovely person and works hard to keep the place nice. The living space is wonderful and comfortable with a nice fireplace to sit by at night.
The rooms are spacious enough, and the place is warm during the snow.
The bath was super hot too which was relaxing after a lot of snowboarding.
If you had a big group this place would be great. There was just two of us and there were 2 groups in the place that filled the hotel. It was crowded when we were there and the dry room was packed. The beds weren't that soft, but my friend didn't complain, so could just be me.
- Harry (9/5): Superb - Masuda was very nice, and the property was clean and cozy. Location was great It is communal so be aware that there is a curfew at 11pm. Although Masuda was lenient and happy to stay out longer if you are quiet on return.
- Katie (10/5): Exceptional - rooms were spacious, staff were friendly, good location within ecoland
- Kristan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alexis (10/5): It was fantastic!! -
- Leanne (10/5): Coming back next year - Location was exceptional and the owner was fantastic Everything was great
- Erin (8/5): Very good - Host were amazing, even gave us a lift to town to catch our bus!
- Daniel (7/5): Good -
- Yanna (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing location! So close to all the restaurants and the convenient store. Mesuda was an amazing host and made us feel at home.
Cozy home with an amazing shared space. Definitely met amazing people during my stay! Nothing!
- Glenn (7/5): Good - Great location, great host who picked us up from Happo Bus station and dropped us back there. Perfect accom for a few nights with shuttle buses to the ski fields only a short walk from the front door.
- Beste (8/5): Very good -
- Lawrence (10/5): Hakuba Snowbaord Trip - Amazing place! Location is very convenient with a 2 min walk to Echoland Main St for shuttle buses and restaurants, cafes and bars. Very cosy cottage with fireplace and nice bath to use at the end of the day. Host was great and provided transportation to Hakuba Bus Terminal on my day of departure. Great value for money. Highly recommended. Will definitely be staying again 😀
- Amy (10/5): Incredible stay, will definitely return! - The hosts were very accomodating!! Allowed me to use the hotel phone to call locally & assisted with transport around Echoland. Very clean facilities and convenient location, close to restaurants & cafes. Great stay!
- James (9/5): Superb - Great location, 100m from main bus pickups. Large rooms. Heating in rooms (and common areas) worked great.
Onsen was nice and hot! Washing facilities would have been nice.
- Nathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jessica (10/5): Amazing and cute bnb right near echoland's main street. - Amazing little bnb right by echoland. A beautiful couple runs this and they were incredibly helpful and welcoming. The bath was so good after a busy day. And reading by the fire was a dream.
We really loved our stay! If you are tall, most doorways are short, so be mindful. The beds are quite firm, and we found sleeping on the futons more comfortable than the beds. There is also only one women's shower and one men's shower for all guests staying, so sometimes there was a little wait.
- Peter (9/5): Excellent - Lovely host, great location, excellent value for money for a family who like to ski an art fussed about basic accommodation. This is our fourth time staying here..
- Thierry (7/5): Good value, great location. - Friendly staff, clean and perfect location. Beds are old and not really comfy. Rooms are not soundproof so it can be very noisy.
- Pippita (8/5): Very good - Amazing location, great hospitality from staff, lovely and clean with everything we needed. There was no communal kitchen so only microwave and toaster for cooking but very close to restaurants
- Monica (10/5): Owner provided free shuttles to and from Hoppo-one, pick up from bus terminal for the first and last day 😇 - Location and service None
- Amy (9/5): Beautiful small size lodge, very cozy and excellent value for money. - Really nice staff, amazing rooms, beautiful Japanese style loft gives a lot of space. The decoration was so lovely, I felt very at home. It was super warm and had a cozy dry room for all our ski gear. Walls were not very sound proof - could hear woman next to us coughing all night.
- Jonas (10/5): The host is a lovely guy who welcomes you with open arms. Definitely recommend this place - Nice vibe, cozy and warm For the price it was perfect.
- Bernadette (10/5): Lovely host. So helpful. Picked us up and dropped us at bus station. Thank you. Enjoyable stay i - Location fantastic for ski buses and restaurants Nothing very good
- Michael (7/5): Great stay and great option in Echoland - Great location,
While a bit aged, this added character.
- Adrian (9/5): Superb - Quiet location away from main road but short walk to shops, buses and restaurants. There is a food option but you needed to have booked on their site.
- Carter (10/5): Had such a good stay at here didn’t want to leave. Staff go above and beyond to help you in every way. Staff picked me u - Such a nice feel and in the best spot ever.
- Melania (7/5): Good - The host was lovely. He picked/drop us up/off from the bus station to take us to the property. The place was welcoming. The common area have an European look, home feeling. Water and green tea were available all the time. Unfortunately it was not breakfast included even though the property mentioned breakfast on our booking. We asked if they could make some breakfast for us but it was not possible. The room don't have any place to store belongings or cloths. we were a family of 4 and it was tricky to keep the room in order. I would suggest to have a little kitchenette open to the guests to cook something for themselves.
- Dmitriy (8/5): Very good -
- Maurizio (8/5): Nice stay will come back for sure - Very friendly owner came to pick me up at Happo Bus Station and dropped me off at departure with no charge.
Room has a wooden loft that’s where I slept I also liked the “classic “wallpaper!
Lounge with plenty of space and big Japanese style bathroom with hot tub Sometimes youth parties in the nearby rooms until AM. A bit noisy but hey who didn’t do the same back in time?
- Bre (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mauri (8/5): Good balance service offered price paid - Good position host very friendly and polite!
Near facilities and ski bus.
Would redo it without hesitation Sometimes group of youth a bit noisy till late at night but that their vibe.
- Thomas (10/5): Thank you for having me, I hope to be back soon - Marionette had an amazing atmosphere, incredible welcoming and inviting. Super clean and everything was well thought out! Highly recommend, the staff were incredibly friendly
- Chini (10/5): Exceptional - Cozy hostel with helpful and friendly staff. The common area is super nice. Close to convenient store and restaurant. Center of Echoland.
- Francesco (8/5): Works well, cosy and well positioned. Excellent value for money. - Works well, cosy and well positioned. Excellent value for money.
- Marrianne (8/5): Very good -
- Tiffany (7/5): Good - Nice layout, had a small hang out area and big table to eat at. The owner was able to scramble some eggs for us. There is no longer breakfast or dinner option. Wish there ad been more access to preparing breakfast if it wasn’t served any more. Microwave, hot water and small fridge available.
Close to shuttles but the shuttles don’t come very often which is not the hotels fault.
- Mitchell (10/5): Amazing location and host, the rooms and bathrooms were well kept. The host was amazing - The host was amazing. Nothing
- Xiangxiong (10/5): Wonderful experience! - Very good location,it is very convenient for shuttle bus to ski area and ski rental, the view around is beatiful, the host is very warmhearted,he thought of very thing for my family.I recommend strongly settle down here when you arrange a ski holiday
- Ali (9/5): Great place to stay and meet some other people skiing in Japan - Lovely host, clean cute place in a great location for the bus / shops ect
- Amy (8/5): Very good - The person who run the hotel very helpful. He pick us up at the bus terminal and drop us off to the bus terminal without charging us. Big dining place with tea coffee water free. Good value
- Catherine (10/5): Exceptional - The staff! The cosy fireplace and lounge area The beds :(
- Chiayin (10/5): Exceptional - Great lobby with stove and piano.
It’s a place that we can eat dinner and talk together at night.
The master is very nice and friendly.
He makes this journey perfect! No
- Henry (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic host who was very helpful. Very comfortable rooms and lovely onsen bath to use after a day at the slopes. Ski drying room was an added plus too :) No complaints :)
- Jimmy (8/5): Very good - The bus stop for skiing are 4mins walk away. The grocery are also 4mins walk away, just opposite the bus stop. The restaurants are about 5mins to 10 mins walk. Suggest to walk to all restaurant to reserve on your first day there. The bath are shared but we usually lock the bath room when we shower, so there is no one showering next to you. This is possible as the place is not big. Sometimes, there is a short queue at the shower. A guys shared toilet on the second floor. A ladies shared toilet on the first floor. A single mix toilet on the first floor. All rooms are on the second floor. There is a room for putting the skis, boots, helmet and gloves at the basement. The owner will heat up this room and all these ski equipment will dry up for next day skiing. A fridge, mini oven and microwave oven on the next basement room. Mineral water is provided foc. The owner pick us up from the bus stop and sent us out on the last day. We sent our luggage to this pension from the airport and sent the luggage to the airport when we left. The futon bed is very comfy. Towel is provided. Nice place to relax on the first floor. The bed is a bit hard. Room is a bit cold as the place is slightly dated.
- Paul (8/5): Great value for money, super helpful staff - Great value in the Hakuba area. Super helpful and friendly staff. Access to convenient shuttle bus services for skiers. Overall we felt like Hakuba was struggling with the number of visitors and that meant that the location put us too far away from places we could eat without a long walk or a taxi ride. Waiting times at restaurants were very long, unless you booked, but then you have to know what's available to book - this has nothing to do with the Marionette except location.
Rooms are smallish but that doesn't matter if you're just crashing there after skiing etc.
Beds were a little on the saggy side, which might affect some people.
Still excellent value for money though.
- Saran (8/5): Hidden homey stay in Hakuba - There's separated room for wet equipment to dry and storage. Central sharing space give a relaxing vibe and nice for just sitting, playing board game, or simply having a tea. Also, the host is super friendly which make everything very very homey. While the location is great for evening (pub, restaurant), it is fairly far from any ski resort and would require a fairly limited bus to access, which usually gets very crowded.
- Chris (5/5): Ecoland stay - Value for money Only one bathroom for the whole building
- Joseph (8/5): Lovely staff and very close to all the local amenities. - Staff were very friendly and location was very close to local restaurants. There was a nice bath tub downstairs, which was nice after a day on the slopes. Rooms did not have their own bathrooms, so they were shared and sometimes you had to wait/queue in the evenings for your turn to use the shower.
- Mckenna (7/5): Quaint, central and good value - Great central location, convenient to shuttle buses and local restaurants.
Quaint / semi-traditional atmosphere with cosy and well appointed common / lounge / dining space.
Helpful host who provided easy transfers to / from main bus station at Happo. Would have preferred traditional Japanese futon bedding in rooms rather than the western beds (which were a little uncomfortable but which are typical of western beds in Japan).
The small size of the lodge can make you feel 'taken over' if you are staying at the same time as a larger group booking.
Very little noise insulation between rooms on the sleeping floor and we unfortunately had some very noisy neighbours.
Bathrooms are traditional Japanese style, gender segregated but very small. This was absolutely fine for our family, but unfortunately other groups staying at the lodge obviously wanted private bathrooms and would lock us out of the bathrooms at peak times for their exclusive use. Signage or removal of the locks to prevent this would be helpful so we did not have to confront guests ourselves to get bathroom access.
- Natalie (9/5): It was lovely would definitely go again - The owner was so amazingly helpful The stairs to my room after a day of skiing
- Hugh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jenna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mitchell (10/5): Amazing place and people! - The place was amazing, so cosy! And the people go above and beyond to help you and make sure you enjoy your stay.
- John (9/5): We’ll be back to stay with Matsuda-san again. - Matsuda was great. We loved how he set the place up, he had a lot of European nick knacks that fit well to the homey feel of his place.
My son and I slept on the futons instead of the beds and we both slept really well.
It was nice coming back here after a day snowboarding, it felt very homey. I loved the fireplace and the wooden tables in the main shared room.
One thing I did need was a white noise machine, but I need those everywhere. We go to sleep early, so it’s mostly us. Once everyone is settled in their rooms, it was really quiet at night and through the morning.I slept really well at Pension Marionette. I think the interior, like the wallpaper, would feel outdated to some people. But I actually really liked the interior. It did not feel sterile to me like a corporate hotel. It felt like some old personality to it.
One thing that could have been great was some kind of breakfast. I would have loved to have had food available in the morning.
- Cristian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Samantha (9/5): Would go back it a heartbeat! - Very comfortable and cosy room. Great location and excellent staff. Room was small for a family of five but manageable.
