Guest Reviews
- Leena (10/5): Excellent overall stay - Spacious rooms. We loved the breakfast area amidst the trees - enjoyed watching the colorful butterflies and birds all around us! Special shout out to Armando who spotted several sloths during the sloth tour and frogs during the night tour
- Naomi (10/5): - I loved this place . This is not a fancy resort nor is it trying to be. This hotel was affordable and perfect for my family of four: spacious rooms, Good breakfast , lots of birds outside our rooms. Nice and helpful staff walking distance to town . We had a car so we did not take advantage of the many tours they were able to provide . I do regret not doing the sloth tour with Armando but we didn’t have enough time in La Fortuna.
- Migdalia (8/5): - La estadia estuvo muy buena y amena. Atencion y servicio al cliente estuvo agradable. Recomendado.
- Kelli (10/5): - The suite we had was perfect for our family of 6. It was spacious, with plenty of sleeping space, hot water, air conditioning, quiet atmosphere yet still close to anything we needed in La Fortuna. We saw toucans! The kids played billiards and enjoyed exploring the property.
- Luanne (10/5): - We loved Xilopalo! It was authentic to the area and felt like a private resort but was close and walkable to town. We enjoyed the pool. The highlight was that breakfast was delicious and had an excellent view of the Arenal volcano. Our suite was spacious. Staff was helpful.
- Nilesh (8/5): - It's right in the middle of the town. The hotel is basic and clean
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great location, walking distance to bar/restaurants - We were surprised to an upgraded massive room so that was great! Staff was friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): If you love nature, you'll love this hotel - We loved our stay at this hotel. It had everything we needed as well as being great value for money.
The staff were polite and friendly and showed us around the facilities on arrival. It's not 5* accommodation but it more than makes up for it with the wildlife and views. Our room was spacious with 2 double beds, kitchenette and fridge.
You can pay for breakfast with a decent choice each morning.
Slightly out of the main La Fortuna area, but only a short stroll to restaurants. The main attraction for us was the location and wildlife.
Mount Arenal is the backdrop where you can view it over breakfast, alongside all the wildlife that visit. We saw toucans, hummingbirds, red squirrels and woodpeckers and countless other exotic birds I can't name.
There is a relax/pool area too.
We booked a number of tours through the hotel and they were cheaper than booking through the providers website.
I would highly recommend doing Armandos sloth tour, and he was also on hand just after sunset to take you through the gardens and point out the frogs and lizards which we'd never have found.
All in all we loved our here.
- Ye (8/5): - There is bird watching every morning at the breakfast area which is amazing. We saw variety of birds. The hotel room is very basic, the shower was not great.
- Sarah (8/5): - Arenal Xilopalo was well situated in area providing quiet evenings and beautiful breakfast views of the bird’s local to the area. Rooms were spacious but outdated. If looking for luxury this is not the place. It is affordable, roomy, and meets needs for a group traveling. Loved the rates to book excursions through hotel also. Did many things and staff were amazing. Night tour by guide on property was worth the pictures we will have for a lifetime. Much gratitude for this place.
- Janet (10/5): - I think the best asset of this hotel is the staff. They are friendly, approachable and with great communication skills. I also like the location because the hotel is beside a forest and lots of animals and birds visit it.
- Jodi (10/5): - Great option for hotel in la fortuna, especially for the price. Rooms are dated, but nice property and staff. Ee really enjoyed our stay, breakfast was also really good.
- Christine (8/5): - My favorite feature was the attached restaurant that overlooked a field. They had trees right nearby with fruit hung up so that all sorts of birds came up close. Good areas to sit and read by the pool. Easy 5-min walk or less into town for shopping, groceries, pharmacy, or more food. Bathrooms were average, but rooms are spacious, with AC and a desk.
- Lawrence (6/5): - Convenient location. Great breakfast
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok room - Hard to find good places in La Fortuna during busy season. Everything is either booked or overpriced. The price here was good but the room was old and shower water was not hot. Location was good
- Samantha (10/5): - Had a wonderful stay here, the staff were lovely and really helpful. The room was basic but had everything I needed, and I didn't spend much time in it anyway! Housekeeping cleaned the room daily. Lovely little restaurant upstairs serving a choice of breakfast, you can sit and watch the birds from the seating area. They put bananas up in the trees and you can see toucans, plus a variety of other birds eating them. A big shout out to Armando, who made my stay here, he's so knowledgeable and spends ages ensuring you get great photographs when you go on tours with him. I was so lucky and saw a sloth come to the ground right in front of me; I came to Costa Rica to see sloths and I still can't believe how many I saw! He would also knock on my hotel if he saw any cool wildlife (because he knew how much I loved it!), so I could go and get photos.
The hotel is easily walkable to restaurants and shops and if you're feeling up to it, you can walk to La Fortuna Waterfall (I did this, be warned it's very steep! But worth it!)
Thank you for a great start to my holiday in Costa Rica.
Pura vida :)
- Omid (10/5): - You definitely get the Costa Rica experience staying at this hotel. Great price, within walking distance of the town/ restaurants. Clean pool, rooms and plenty of wildlife within the facility. There are plenty hummingbirds around the bushes by the parking lot.
- Patricia (10/5): - We stayed in various places around Costa Rica and this was our best .
- Andrés (8/5): Relajante - Un lugar Natural, muy cerca del centro pero alejado del ruido, El desayuno estuvo muy bueno.
- Honorine (8/5): - Great place to stay to visit Arenal volcano. A bit away from the noice and the traffic of la Fortuna which is good.
- Lavanya (10/5): - Love the property and nature
- Marie-Eve (8/5): - Room was large and comfortable. Food was excellent, bird watching was very interesting. Other services including a cold pool and a pool table were available but we haven't used it. A nice place to stay. Tours at reasonable prices are also available.
- Pamela (10/5): - Lovely view of Arenal volcano from the dining area. Definitely have the reception desk book all your excursions and transportation for you. They are very helpful and can get you good rates. John was very helpful in making travel arrangements for me. Just 3 short blocks from central zone of town.
- Jennifer (8/5): - Loved breakfast (not included) and bird watching in the mornings, the sloth tour with Armando offered through the hotel was amazing and well worth the price. Location was great, short and safe walk to town (bring a flashlight or phone light). Beds weren’t the best and the sheets were musty but we slept so well and weren’t bothered by any noise.
- Kathleen (6/5): - Centrally located but receptionist tried to get us to pay in cash at a higher rate than listed on Expedia
- Dierdre (10/5): - Fantastic place! Tucked away on a dead end road, so very quiet, with wonderful views of both the volcano and great bird watching at the bird feeding stations. We can’t recommend the Sloth tour with Armando enough. Make sure you do it if at all possible!
- Sukhdeep (10/5): - Staff was very friendly and helpful and answering our million questions. The facilities were great, water and natural environment. The room was really big and clean.
- Donald (8/5): - Great staff! Solid location just in town but bordering natural area. Local staff took us on a little frog walk to show us frogs on the property. The breakfast and dinner area is a nice terrace with a stunner view of Arenal and some areas for birds to come eat fruit. Very pleasant. Overall a great stay!
- Bryan (10/5): - It's beauty is unparalleled. The owners were friendly and accommodating. They went out of their way to help us. An unforgettable experience.
- Hayato (10/5): - The manager Jose did an amazing job! They have an onsite restaurant which has an amazing view of the volcano. To top it off there are about 200 birds that come for the morning while you eat to feed on the fruits they hang. Also they offer us a " mini night hike" for free ( we tipped of course) around the property which has a bunch of frogs , toads and insects to see which we wouldn't have been able to see otherwise. The room was "huge" and our kids loved being in a separate room from us. Very close to everything!
- Christopher (10/5): - Beautiful hotel in a quiet location but still near the center of town. Wonderful property where I saw birds and other kinds of wildlife. The rooms were a little older but we didn't mind. Highly recommend the breakfast with a view of the volcano.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The restaurant has amazing views of the volcano! Very low expectations and was pleasantly surprised as the room was very clean and included a mini fridge and there was hot water!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It is nice place
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Family owned property! Right in la fortuna city but still in nature. Great restaurant and staff is amazing. Great bite watching and we saw lots of frogs around their water feature. Truly a great place at a great price!
- Gretchen (10/5): Great stay - This place is amzing, especially for the price. Rooms are large and clean. Close to town so you can walk in for dinner. Very helpful in booking tours and their tour prices are cheaper than anywhere else we saw. The back deck overlooked undeveloped land and the bird feeder attracted many interesting birds including tucans! We would definately stay here again!
- Hazriq (10/5): - The staff were top notch. Very friendly and extremely helpful. They welcome you with a refreshing cold juice.
The location is next to the nature reserve so you can actually see some wildlife if you are lucky. Also within walking distance to the town center without all the noise and chaos.
Room was big and full of amenities, including coffee and a jar of cookies. Ample parking space.
- ALLAN (10/5): Quiet birders paradise - This is a great hotel, the location is perfect. The effort they put into attracting an amazing array of birds makes this the best place to stay in the area, and the great breakfasts make you never want to leave.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly and helpful staff. We were given a room upgrade to a really great room. Hotel is within walking distance of shops and restaurants.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The owner and his son are great people who are happy to help you with anything you need no matter what. its not a 4 star or 5 star hotel but if your looking for a quiet clean place with great staff and close to everything this place is great i give it a thumbs up
- Marla (10/5): Very Helpful Staff - The staff was very helpful with giving us suggestions of activities and directions. This is a new hotel. I would like to give some suggestions. A trash can in the kitchen area would be very helpful. The toilet seat was for the wrong size toilet and there is no sound barriers. We could hear the conversations in the office In our room. Also we could hear other people in other rooms and outside. I still give this place a high review. We would stay again.
- Jose (10/5): Excellent option for those who don’t need luxury. - Staff amazing. More geared toward locals, foreigners may find it a bit rustic or basic but overall is VERY NICE. The gardens, the property is upkept very well. Will definitely come back and be surrounded by nature.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very cheap hotel (21US$/night) for the location and very close to restaurants, grocery store and shops.
Staff very friendly and helpful with many choices of activities.
Bogarin trail right next to the hotel (100meters) with discounted price (8US$) is a must, we saw many sloths and birds!
Hotel is still in construction but will sure become awesome.
Room had AC, fridge, cookies and coffee machine which was great.
Room was spacious but a strong urine smell when we arrived (we had to let the door open few hours)!
Overall enjoyed our stay and recommand!
- Sayitlikeitis (10/5): - Great customer service. Facilities were clean and welcoming. Check in was great. Our only regret was we only had one night stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Easily walkable to town, but also quiet. Enjoyed everything about it, just didn't have enough time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value for travelers - This hotel was very good value for money and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The room seemed to have a damp smell initially but this went once the AC was on. Room had a fridge and filter coffee machine and nice cookies other wise fairly basic. Great for the budget conscious traveler who just needs a place to sleep while exploring the area during the day.
- Cameo (10/5): - We loved that this hotel was surrounded by nature, while still being very close to town. My son was obsessed with all the creatures he was able to find on the grounds, including poison dart frogs, spiders, birds, agouti, as well as the beautiful plants.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff always go above and beyond to ensure you have a great stay! The hotel property borders a park so it’s an amazing place to watch birds.
- Tracy (10/5): - great location, a lot of restaurant around that area. staffs are nice and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - great location. a lot of restaurantaround staffs are nice and helpful.
- ClearwaterRob (8/5): - A great option for the value conscious traveller. The room was very clean, and huge! The small fridge was also a nice bonus.
- Verified traveler (8/5): New and large rooms. - New and large rooms. very helpful front desk. A little hard to find the location.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Staff are great, they go out of their way to assist and always happy to help.
- Maria-Luisa (10/5): Just great!! - Perfect location, great customer service, very clean for an unbelievably price
- Nick (10/5): - We had a great stay here, the rooms firstly are a great size with heaps of room, the aircon and fridge run cold, the shower is hot! The staff were great as well and after trying to find cheaper prices for activities online and in shops i couldn't. We highly recommend doing the rafting the hotel offers, amazing!
- Shauna (6/5): Very acceptable - Very acceptable lower cost lodging. It worked well for our family of 6 adults for 2 nights. We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit with a kitchenette. I think if 6 people are allowed, there should be enough glasses, plates and utensils for 6. Otherwise it was as described and convenient for visiting the nearby area..
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is an excellent location in La Fortuna! It is just on the edge of town so you can walk anywhere yet the grounds back onto a natural area where you can view Arenal Volcano and bird watch. I was able to take some amazing photos of birds right beside my room! The staff were super friendly and helpful with everything! The only complaint I had was that my room smelt moldy (although I didn’t complaint to the staff so they may have been able to move me to a room that wasn’t so - not sure?). I would definitely stay with them again but I would recommend requesting a room on the second floor as I had the end unit and the stairs going up was loud.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Pleasantly surprise! The property is still undergoing renovation, but the accommodations are nice. Private and spacious. The staffs were courteous friendly and helpful! Jose was able to secure a last minute tour for us to which I am very grateful. I would stay here again for sure!
- Ginny (8/5): - Most staff were very friendly but one time the only person at the front desk was new to CR and did not understand English so could not help with recommendations.
If you are a no-frills person who simply wants a clean, safe, quiet, spacious, very convenient location and very economical place- this is a perfect place! A 5 minute walk to town but feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. We would definitely stay here again.
However if you are looking for anything like a Holiday Inn, definitely not the place for you.
Very little room service (we stayed more than one night) just made the bed but no new towels etc. (although probably would have given them to us if we had thought to ask) nothing for breakfast (although there are very reasonable priced and delicious restaurants nearby costing approximately $5), once inside your place, the walls between bathroom and between rooms does not go completely to the ceiling, so no privacy in your apt/within your room and not completely dark in your room until all lights are turned off. However full privacy between guest rooms etc
- Verified traveler (4/5): - I did not like the Cleanliness, and also there were small holes in the floor, which led to lots of bugs in the area. Extremely dissatisfied with my choice of this hotel. Also, the location of the hotel was behind the whole town, which was a bit freaky because it was all alone.
- Hamed (6/5): - Appliances inside the room were very old and not clean.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Noisy - The staff is amazing, very helpful, but the place itself is not stafisying, it’s a family style hotel, you can get a suite for a nice price, but the room condition is not very good, and At the night we stay, it is extremely noisy
- Judith (8/5): Rustic hotel accommodations at a reasonable price! - Hosts were extremely friendly and accommodating, especially since it was a last minute booking. The hotel, although it was adequate, gave us more of a “cabin rental” feeling rather than that of a typical hotel room rental. But it was great to actually see many native plants and wildlife right on the premises...the hosts put out fresh fruit daily to attract beautiful birds, and various types of frogs are abundant in the area.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Reception was very welcoming and helpful. The family room we stayed in was very spacious and had great amenities. The cleaning staff did a great job when we were out. It was conveniently located, just a 5 minute walk from the town center. Would highly recommend to anyone.
- Cassie (6/5): - The beds are so hard it was like sleeping on the ground.
- Terry (8/5): Nice hotel tucked away at the edge of town. - We had a wonderful two-night stay at this little hotel tucked away at the edge of town. Easy walking distance to numerous restaurants and shops, yet far away enough to escape the town noise. Staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and spacious. Coffee and cookies were provided, as well as a tv, mini-fridge, and effective air conditioner. This hotel met every expectation we had of it and we would definitely choose it again.
- Emily (8/5): Looks Can Be Deceiving - Our flight was delayed 3 times. We arrived well past midnight, nevertheless the owner waited for our arrival which is quite unusual as most Costa Rican hotel check-ins must be done by 9pm.The hotel is located in a forest clearing which made waking up each morning an experience in itself. If you want luxury comfort, you're at the wrong hotel. The no frills room (bring your own washcloths, soap and shampoo) was perfect for my son and I.It felt like we were camping which just added to our whole CR experience. Our room was equipped w/ a coffee machine (free cookies),refrigerator, blow dryer & ac.You cannot beat the price, which first attracted me to Xilopalo.Book this hotel, save your money, and use it to site see wonderful Costa Rica.
The hotel provides taxi service to & from various locations at cheaper rates. There is an amazing & affordable restaurant onsite as well as an inexpensive sloth tour given by a local expert guide. Baldi Hot Springs is a 7-10 minute drive (which the hotel provided a discount), the White Water Rafting Company the hotel suggested was also at a reduced rate with pick up at Xilopalo. They also suggested we hike Arenal ourselves for more savings which we did at our own pace & loved it.Restaurants, souvenir shops, (an awesome) Chocoliteria, church, park, bank with ATM, dune buggy company, grocery stores, laundrymat, ice cream shops,& much more are all within walking distance.Staff genuinely aims to please visitors.Loved Xilopalo !!!
- John (10/5): Excellent experience set the tone for our trip - My family, including our 3 sons aged 17, 18, and 21, loved this stay. We are a family that loves nature. This is not a 5 star hotel by U.S. standards -- it didnt have chandeliers, concierge, laundry service or multiple overpriced restaurants on the site. However, I've never seen a U.S. 5 star hotel offer a nature trail, starting right out our front door, leading to sloths, poison dart frogs, red eyed tree frogs, agoutis, caimans, and a variety of tropical birds. Big rooms. Bed seemed hard but slept great. Staff was more than pleasant. One man I met (owner?), Norman, impressed me so much that I believe I will remember my experience with him for the rest of my life. He set the tone for my trip. When the staff discovered the members of our two rooms were one family they offered us a very large two bedroom family suite at no extra charge. We almost took it but decided we loved the view from benches outside our original rooms too much to leave them. Tropical jungle in front of us and the volcano Arenal itself off to the side in the morning (afternoon clouds obscure the volcano). The room had a refrigerator that we used to keep pinapple and guanabana cold, and the staff brought knives we could use to cut the fruit and Costa Rican chocolate that we bought in town. Bars, restaurants, grocery store, panaderia, and bank (debit card access to colones or dollars) are all easy walking distance (a few short blocks). The hotel is wonderful now and is being worked on. Door locks a bit tricky
- Dayanne (10/5): - Awesome place to stay!
- Joyce (10/5): Good affordable lodging - This is a great place to stay for the budget conscious traveller located close to hustle and bustle of town but far enough so that it is quiet. Upon arrival I was greeted with delicious orange juice and they supply coffee which tastes amazing. They have some short walking trails on property with wildlife.
- Joyce (10/5): Great affordable lodging close to town - This is a nice little place a short walk into town but far enough away from the noise and bustle. The room was spacious and the coffee amazing. The grounds offer a little oasis with little hiking trails. The bed was comfortable and the Wi-Fi was excellent. This is not an upscale hotel but a great place to stay for the value minded traveller looking to be close to town but not IN town. I would definitely stay again.
- Keri (8/5): Good value and location - Hotel is in a good location for being picked up by the tours and walking into downtown for food. Bird feeder on grounds is cool. The shower wasn’t very enjoyable - seemed to lose heat for a second shower in a row and got water all over with strong spray. The curtains fell down when we tried to close them. We did like having the mini fridge and the cookies with our coffee. I would stay again, but it helps to be prepared for some of the potential pitfalls.
- k (10/5): - This was our favorite hotel of our trip we stayed for 4 nights. The property is wonderful, just on the edge of town so it is quiet and peaceful. There is a bird feeding area and a great view off the back property. The staff was very helpful and walked us through the adjacent paths to show us some local wildlife including a family of caimans. The hotel is easy walking distance to town maybe 5 minutes. As other reviews said the water for the shower was not hot but we still loved this place.
- William (10/5): Arenal Xilopalo - an ideal choice in La Fortuna - Arenal Xilopalo was a great choice for La Fortuna. We wanted an easy walk to downtown restaurants, etc., but a quiet location that offered some chance to see birds, tropical plants, etc. Arenal Xilopalo delivered exactly that. At the price we paid, it was an exceptional value. The property is being fairly recently redeveloped and will likely continue to improve over time. There is a nice bird-watching area adjacent the reception where they have water features and place fruit to attract birds. We saw aracari (smaller toucans) and numerous other birds. A staff member took time to point out small colorful frogs and other creatures. A view of Arenal can be had from one area of the property. The property adjoins a nice trail that makes an excellent walk to see an amazing variety of plant life, as well as, often, sloths. I believe this requires a relatively inexpensive fee. The room was spacious and had good A/C and a TV. It also had a small (but decent size) refrigerator and two sinks outside the bathroom.
In the reception, there are displays of fossilized tree trunks, or "xilopalo" after which the place was named.
I would stay at Arenal Xilopalo again, and recommend it!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Location and fantastic Bargain - I stayed here two nights with my grown son. At the time it was listed as a hostel and was a good price in a convenient location. We were pleasantly surprised to find it much more like a hotel than hostel, with spotless, roomy and very comfortable rooms. I think the hostel part has become "hotel" and/or apartments now, but the bargain and all the rest remains the same.
The staff was helpful and friendly, the grounds are lovely and all in all you just can't go wrong here.
- phil (10/5): Friendly - Excellent experience with the staff
Loved the walk through the forest to the restaurant
We will stay there again for sure
