Guest Reviews
- Anna (10/5): - Very friendly staff, very clean and organised.
Staff would go above and beyond for you
- Jeffrey (10/5): - It's an interesting cross between a homestay and a resort. The beautiful welcoming staff made it a memorable stay in spite of the rough by western standards facilities. I'd go back!
- Margaret (10/5): The Real Fiji - This is a place with true feeling. You get a real sense of being part of a Fijian family. Loved the beautiful singing to accompany a good variety of meals. Although old, the bures are spacious with lots of natural light and are progressively being renovated. We enjoyed relaxing, snorkeling and walking around the area. We would go back.
- Erin (10/5): - We absolutely loved our stay at Naqalia Lodge. The entire staff instantly made you feel welcome and cared for. Meals are lovingly prepared and the food is plentiful. The island is beautiful with great snorkeling out front and hiking nearby. We would absolutely come again.
- Victoria (10/5): - I asked ChatGPT to suggest a non resort, run by a village in the Yasawa Islands. Top choice. I had such a special experience. Beautiful people.
- Brandon (10/5): - The best 5 days of my life. Originally booked for 3 nights but had to extend my stay because I didn’t want to leave. They truly welcome you into their family and make your experience an unforgettable one. Made some real deep connections with the staff and other guests that I’ll never forget. Truly a magical place.
- Christina (10/5): Experience the real Fiji! - This eco-resort is perfect for a relaxing break on a secluded beach. We stayed in a spacious beachfront bungalow for 4 nights. The staff are so friendly and accommodating! You can choose to do a multitude of activities and the staff are happy to take you. All of the meals are freshly cooked and are so delicious! We experienced a kava ceremony and a traditional dinner cooked in a lovo oven. I recommend this resort for adventurous adults who want to experience true Fijian culture and life. Come as guests, leave as family!
- Kaige (10/5): - Beautiful place, beautiful people, and the best food! Felt like part of the family from the moment we arrived. You can’t go wrong booking here.
- Howard (10/5): - This is our third visit to Nacalia Lodge. it is special because of the friendly accommodating staff and real Fijian culture, Its safe and child friendly, really plentiful and good food, the best we had in the Yasawas, lots of activities, plenty of laughing and singing and great coral snorkelling off the beach
The manager Akoo, will help with anything, he took us to the beautiful spit beach between the islands where the coral garden is magnificent, and provided a great picnic. You can arrange to swim with the sharks or you can simple relax and enjoy the beach. We will come again.
- Andrew (10/5): - Stunning location. Beautiful house reef for snorkelling.
Not a 5 star resort but very friendly family environment.
Food was good and plentiful and accommodated vegan and vegetarian needs.
Wish we had stayed longer.
- leon (10/5): - Very friendly people, make you feel very welcome, beautiful beach and snorkeling. Amazing and loads of food
- Alexander (8/5): - Really friendly and caring staff. They could provide a good array of activities on request. Really good food on offer too. Beautiful location to watch the beach from a hammock. Spotty roaming wifi connection but still able to connect to internet. Minor issues with the power occassionally cutting out at the lodges. More stable power available in the dining hall.
- Sonia (10/5): - We have left a piece of our heart at Naqalia Lodge and at the Yasawa Island. The staff and Management at Naqalia went above and beyond to make our stay nothing short of amazing and they were always smiling and happy to help. We stayed in the garden Bure, a traditional Fijian house, which was a pretty authentic experience of the life on the island. The food was home cooked, traditional and always in very generous portions. We sat at the table with the other guests and were a "family -like" meal times while the staff and management was playing guitar and singing songs for us.
The lodge is on the beach surrounded by nature at the feet of a mountain, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the other island when you wake up with the sounds of chicken and roosters roaming around the Bure. The coral reefs just off the beach are SPECTACULAR, we could see many tropical fish of every colour, size and shape. It definitely was one of the best snorkeling spots that we have been to. The lodge offers also paid activities such as shark feeding, fishing and village visit. We spent 4 days there but we really wished we could stay more. Vinaka.
- Meg (2/5): - 1/10. Fake reviews online. Fake website photos. Villas were atrocious: bathrooms were disgusting with broken toilets, broken shower and basin, basically unusable. Activities were overpriced and didnt deliver what they said. NO snorkelling. Food was basically inedible and way over priced. Dont go!
- Leslie (10/5): - Wow! Amazing! Aka, Oni, Sia and Manu were amazing! I was fresh off the boat when I arrived here and they got me to Fiji time quickly! The most stressful part of the trip was choosing which hammock. Thank you for a great experience!!
- Constance (10/5): Paradise with an amazing my kind staff! - What a magic place in the world. Naqalia Lodge might be the best place I ever stayed and God knows I have been traveling! It is not a 5 star hotel and the accommodations are very simple but you have everything you need. Sleeping with the wind on your face and the sound of waves, mosquitoes nets everywhere for you to be well. This I will miss a lot. Showers are cold but you don’t really need hot showers as the temperature is quite warm even in the evenings.
The spot in itself is for everyone else that stayed here while I was there including me, the best snorkeling spot we’ve seen so far with the most amazing plate corals with all types of colors. Incredible!
The activities are great between fishing, hiking (steep climbs!), going to the village is also a must to meet the children. You never get bored and have time to relax during your day and snorkel all day!
The meal plan is perfect, you are never hungry and the food is good. Breakfast is the best!!
And finally, the kindness, the continuous efforts of the team to make you happy, to make you feel at home but also to get to know you and share their history and culture with you. Oni, Sia, Aku, Manu, Mana, Toui a very big THANK YOU. I will remember your kindness and generosity forever!
- Helen (6/5): Amazing staff and snorkeling off the beach - Pluses: great staff, lovely family run authentic resort who thank you for coming and play guitar and sing thru every dinner. There's a reef in front of the lodge with the most diverse corals I've ever seen- snorkeled 3 days in a row and loved every minute (and it ended up being some of the best snorkeling we had in the country, and at no extra charge)! Food was great despite cooking for only 3 of us (low season), Fijians love onions and garlic!
Negatives: the place is a bit grotty... upholstery on chairs and couches is very dirty. Bathrooms are a bit gross. No fan at night when power is off. No room cleaning in 3 days even after asking to have it swept due to sand tracking in.
So take your not-so-nice clothes, mosquito spray and enjoy the snorkeling!
- Elena (10/5): - Had an amazing time here in the dorm! Small, family run property with the best food I had in Fiji. Electricity during the day and decent phone service. Aku and his family went above and beyond making me feel like family. The hike and snorkeling are must dos!
- Nathan (10/5): - incredible welcome, simply magnificent place, team taking great care of you, very good food and good portion, nice activities and at good prices. Thank you for these two days spent with you
- Jana (10/5): - If you're looking for a true Fijian experience, picturesque scenery and you want to just relax and soak it all in, this is your spot. It's atmosphere is super calming and welcoming from the first minute. But it's not for everyone as it's not a resort. Think about it more like camping.
The accommodation is simple and spacious. Yes, the bathroom is "a bit scary" (that's how our 5 years old described it :-) but you don't need much there.
The meals are traditional Fijian. Very tasty and plenty for everyone. Tab water wasn't potable during our stay so we had to purchase bottled water. They also provided drinking water and fresh juices with meals. Staff are wonderful.
Great snorkelling right off the beach. We rented a kayak ($50 fjd) to go around the island. It was a good 3 hours paddle. Worth the effort as the scenery is beautiful and there are nice swim spots along the shore.
Cell coverage was available only on the beach. We didn't inquire about wifi but I believe they offer paid wifi by the main building.
Electricity isn't an issue. They have solar panels and generator.
We loved our 2 nights stay and wished we booked 3. We need to come back again :-)
- Mark (8/5): - Beautiful island with great snorkeling directly in front of lodge. Whilst the area in front of the room was clean and well maintained there were piles of rubbish and disused materials spread across the grounds as well as rubbish on the beach. The room and bed were comfortable although the bathroom was in poor condition with cold water shower only which we didn’t mind. It felt quite awkward as the only guests at the lodge for 4 days especially at meals where the nice staff would all sit directly facing us singing and watching us eat including the cute hungry children all waiting for us to finish so they could eat only after we had finished I think it was a good option to stay here for a few days to support the local villagers and get to know some of the locals and its a great location with lots of activities and excellent snorkelling at your front door but it’s very basic, a bit dirty, and little awkward at times. Would recommend staying here for a few days but incorporating it with another resort option in the area.
- Tom (10/5): - We stayed here for 3 nights, went to another (already booked) resort and after that came back in a hurry! We missed the place, the staff, the dogs, everything! Felt very at home here with our kids (7 & 9), had a lot of fun, delicious food and amazing trips. Made memories that will hopefully never fade.
- Sheryl (10/5): - The family has created a very friendly and social environment which we loved! Food was great and the diving was phenomenal.
- Salome (10/5): - The stay at Naqalia Lodge was amazing. Great staff and best food we had in Fiji. The food is buffet style and also has veggie options. The staff were super friendly and shared a lot of stories after dinner and at kava sessions. There were a lot of different activities that could be booked.
- Stefania (10/5): - We had an amazing experience at Naqalia Lodge, which is a family run lodge with a real feeling of Fiji, not only for the amazing place but for the people and food as well.
All the staff, Aku, Tūī, Sia, Oni and Manu did everything possible to make our staying very special and made us feel part of the family.
We did activities such as fishing, snorkelling, swimming, trekking and visiting the villa.
We will definitely be back and highly recommend it to anyone interested in knowing and learning from the real Fijian life.
- Julian (10/5): - I had a lovely vacation at Naqalia Lodge. From the moment I arrived at the Lautoka boat dock, Bill, his brother, his wife welcomed me with open arms, making me feel like part of their Fijian family.
Sia was a wonderful host throughout my visit, and Oni's incredible cooking was a definite highlight. Her delicious and original vegetarian meals were so good that guests (including this one) ask for her secret recipes. And Stubby, their adorable dog, was also a joy to have around and added to the warm, welcoming atmosphere. He even welcomed me as I stepped out of the boat.
The experience is minimalist with cold showers and solar power, but when staying in Paradise - isn't that all you need? Oh, and don't miss the morning sunrise hike where you'll be greeted with breathtaking South Pacific views. If you're looking for an authentic, rustic stay with genuine hospitality and character, stay here.
- Amanda (10/5): - The staff are so lovely and make you feel so welcomed, the food is delicious with a great variety and plenty of it. It was a truly wonderful Fijian experience, I am planning my next trip already!
- Bruno (10/5): - Amazing staff, lovely people and authentic fiji experience with locals.
I definitely would recommend it.
- Verne (10/5): Family of 6. - Absolutely wonderful. This lodge is run by an amazing fiji family. We felt welcome from the moment we arrived. Nothing was too much. The cabins were very cute, and so much love put into them. A beautiful welcome message in the bed, and flowers we felt the fiji spirit here. Location was gorgeous. Snorkeling was beautiful. Hike up the mountain to watch the sunrise was lovely. Kids enjoyed volleyball with the Fijian family daily.
Snorkeling with the sharks was one of the best experiences ever, and in one of the most spectacular reefs I've seen. 10/10.
My son and husband went fishing and also had a great time.
We got taught how to do fijian dancing, and that was so much fun, had a bonfire on the beach that was magical, and even got to drink kava with the family.
If you are after a true fijian homestay type holiday, then this is the place to visit. Drink coconuts, sleep in hammocks, be in fiji time from the moment you arrive.
Will definitely stay here again. Really loved our 3 nights, 4 days here.
- Renee (2/5): - I went to this island to hike to the peak and go diving with the sharks. I was told I wasn’t ‘allowed’ to hike alone as it was too dangerous and if anything happened I would be responsible for them being shut down. I’m a skilled hiker and an adult and this felt like an invasion of my freedom to make my own decisions. I was watched constantly and felt like I had no privacy and they constantly tried to sell me on their tours. For someone who wanted this it may have been ok but I just wanted some privacy and independence to do what I wanted.
Further, I was the only guest and they sang to me and watched me eat at every meal. It was very awkward. The welcome was nice but it all felt very contrived and I told them I don’t want it or enjoy it. I asked them to leave me during meals or join me to talk, which may have been better, but they insisted on singing and sitting across the room watching while I ate alone.
When I left they set up a sales table outside my hut and tried to charge me extra for my dive tour which is always paid for. I was very glad to get out of there and will never be back. Unfortunate because the property was beautiful and their dog was really cute. There was a young couple that was quite nice but the all round vibe was icky, restrictive and pressure sales. Yuck.
I’ve heard that different families take turns running the facility so perhaps it will be different if you go. It probably wouldn’t have been so bad if all their energies hadn’t been focused on me.
- Lisa (10/5): - Loved that it is run by family. Only 4 bures so very personal. The food was delicious and plenty of it. The snorkelling right out front with beautiful coral.
- Nadine (8/5): - The personnal are nice and always there to answer any question or to help you with your activity
The good was great and the portion is big … everybody can eat as they like
- Elise (8/5): A great place to stay! - Highly recommend!
This is a wonderful Homestay. The food is great and plentiful, feeding sharks was amazing, good snorkeling, and most prominent the family that runs it are truly lovely, wonderful people. They were super caring, helpful and fun people to stay with. Our best experience with Homestay on our holiday in Fiji.
The facilities are like most homestays simple. Not always good reception, but possible to pay for internet there. We lived in dorms and had a good time, a bit run down, but quite clean.
All in all, thank you for having us, we had a great time!
- Sabine Ulrike (10/5): - The hospitality is outstanding and deep from the heart. Vinaka kawa levu!
Vinaka !
- Conor (10/5): True Island Living - If you want a luxury, stay this is not it. However this is as close to authentic Fiji island living as you can find. All the staff are part of the same family and you become part of it. The snorkeling off the beach was really good, the beach beautiful and they offer daily free snorkel trips to show you the best spots. An amazing unique experience 100% recommended.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staffs are friendly and entertaining. Makes you feel like home.
I like the hammocks so much, it is comfortable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I loved every moment I spent there. Basic in terms of amenities, but sometimes that’s exactly what is needed to truly relax. The cold showers took some getting used to but then I realized how great I felt afterwards. Really, I wouldn’t change a thing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice, quiet and friendly stay. The staff is eager to help make sure that everyone is welcomed.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This is more of a homestay which is good for backpackers, rather than a resort. The family who run the property are really nice and accommodating. The meals are basic and quite bland but you are encouraged to eat a lot, which would suit hungry backpackers.
There was an overbooking on the night we arrived and we were put into the locals hut, rather than the beach hut that we had booked and paid for. This locals hut was not clean, did not have running water for most of the evening so we couldn’t flush the toilet or have water to brush out teeth etc, and was not at all similar to the photos of the hut that we had booked. After we complained, we were then told that we were in there due to the overbooking. It was upsetting and disappointing to have been put in that room and not told there was an overbooking etc. as we felt otherwise we would have be len in there for 3 nights. We got moved into the beach hut that we had booked the following night and we were given shark snorkeling for free, but no other discount for the bad experience.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - it's a rustic resort, no a/c, and it was really hot. But it worked fine for us.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We cried when we left. Great people, great insight into Fijian culture. Aku2 puts his heart and soul into the business. Thanks so much to The good sam, the bad sam, Josie, max, philip, the geko hunter and all the rest of you gorgeous people.
Also lost 2kg due to lots of exercise and healthy food - bonus!!
- Melanie (8/5): Friendly local run small scale resort. - Only four bures and a dormitory so it’s not full of different people, it’s very friendly and you often have the whole beach to yourself😊. We stayed five nights so had plenty of time to relax and also do the shark tour and hike. There is good snorkelling with coral and a variety of fish about 50m off the beach at high tide. The generator only runs 6pm to 6am so the bathroom which had no windows was a bit dark. Cold showers were fine. We enjoyed the beautiful environment and lovely local people. Thank you to Mary for helping us settle in and making our stay very enjoyable.
- Kimberly (10/5): Amazing experience - I took my 11 and 13 yr old nieces to Naqalia for one night to experience the islands and we did not want to leave. We had come from the Sofitel in Denarau and while that is a lovely resort it didn’t feel like we were in Fiji, Naqalia changed that for us.
Yes the accommodation is budget but it is clean and the welcoming is warm and makes you feel part of a family. They were so thoughtful and patient with the kids when we did the sunset hike and went snorkelling, we did not want to leave and are already planning our trip back, hopefully in a year.
The girls can’t stop going on about the Fijian family they had so much fun with.
Thank you so much to all of you, we can’t remember all of your names but we can’t wait to see you all again.
- astrid (10/5): Es werden viele Aktivitäten angeboten - Die Logde müsste unbedingt renoviert werden. Die Herzlichkeit der Bewohner ist einfach klasse
- Jackie (8/5): - Upon my arrival with the boat I was greeted with a hand full of them singing . That was such a lovely touch .
Then went to the dinning room for a meet and greet. We were offered a drink as well. Wow I was so pleaseantly supprised .
Its those little things that make a difference.
Kava ceremony nightly were we laughed the night away.
The food was simple but nice. It was served as a buffet style where you can help yourself
Great home stay and keep it up.
Vinaka Jackie Chan
- Mardy (8/5): Rustic opportunity to disconnect - These accommodations are much more rustic/primitive than I was led to expect based on the online reviews that I read. There is no hot water available and the water that is available in the bures and dorm is rainwater straight from the collection barrels. Electricity is offered thru only part of the day and WiFi is available during those times at an additional charge ($25us for 24hrs). The WiFi (as expected) was very weak and unreliable. Drinking water is available for sale in the main bure as well as several other drink options. Three plentiful meals per day were prepared and included in the price we paid but if you need snacks you should bring them as there is no place near to buy such items. The meals were tasty but alternative options were not offered. If you have specific dietary needs make sure that you express those needs well in advance of your stay and bring options with you. The people who run the Lodge are wonderful, happy, gregarious people who welcome you with a hospitality and joy. This is a perfect spot to relax and disconnect from the stresses of modern society. Expect to pay extra for most activities. Activities we paid extra for were: jewelry making/weaving, kayaks ($10us per hour), shark swimming/feeding ($30us). Lots of backpackers come and go from this Lodge as it offers a dormitory option. This was a once in a lifetime experience for us. We very much enjoyed the Fijian people & the hospitality shown to us during our trip.
- Laura (10/5): Loved my stay - Perfect place to relax. The staff is fantastic and makes you feel like family. The hike and snorkelling is a must!
- Michael (10/5): Genuine fiji experience. - I travelled there with my wife and 2 daughters (12,9) for 4 nights. When we arrived we received a welcome song on the beach. We were startled by their warmth and kindness. After and introduction we were taken to our Bure. Which was very basic but after an initial adjustment perfectly comfortable. The ocean was our constant companion. Whether it was watching "ocean TV" from our veranda or listening to the waves crash on the beach at night. Highlights included the free snorkelling and kava gatherings in the evening. In fact we enjoyed all the activities. The thing that really makes it special is the way they make you feel part of the family and will do anything to make your stay more fun and fulfilling. The food is made and served with love. Thanks to Mary and the kitchen staff. Take some snacks with you for between meals and/or ask the staff for a refreshing coconut. We will miss this place and never forget their generousity and kindness.
