• StevieBis (8/5): Enjoyed our stay - Two nights at The Peacock, which is a lovely hotel with great staff. When shown to our room, first impressions were favourable, but we did have an unfortunate incident with cleaning, which was dealt with quickly & professionally, but was a little disappointing. Also, the curtains in our room were off the hooks in places as they are very heavy. We did report to reception, but small things like that make all the difference and you'd think it would be checked beforehand. We didn't have evening meal at the hotel, but did have drinks in the lovely surroundings. Breakfast was excellent, but as someone has said before, it is a bit strange to have to give a breakfast time, it puts you under a bit of pressure to be down on time. All in all this was a great stay and we did a couple of long walks which we enjoyed very much.
• Conniesawedathotmail (4/5): Birthday lunch - Beautiful old stone hotel, latticed windows and large well kept gardens. We were half an hour late but the staff were very pleasant, said it wasn’t a problem. Lovely sunny day so sat outside. We decided to eat outside so Lucas the Polish waiter and Mandy the English waitress kindly moved our table into the sun. They were both excellent in their jobs that’s why I’m awarding the two stars. The food, unfortunately was not! Starter of celeriac soup was too thick, lacked flavour, the small bread roll was delicious, ( suppose that’s worth one star) but no butter to accompany it. Main course of brisket beef which is a favourite, was pulled, it had the warmed up flavour, had been cooked, left to go cold then warmed up! The gravy was delicious but it’s difficult not to make good gravy with brisket. The Boulangere potatoes were inedible! So undercooked some of the slices were raw. The mange tout were just about aldente but broccoli was raw. We waited 40 minutes for first course then 30 minutes for main course. Have no idea who the chef is but obviously the menu is beyond his capabilities. All the front of house were lovely and are an asset to the hotel. Just the cooking let’s the hotel down!
• elainehO2055YT (2/5): Terrible - Went for a Mother’s day meal, 2 of us being coeliac and one not. After repeated requests and their assurances for gluten free food, within two hours of leaving the restaurant, we were both very sick and were still suffering 24 hours later. If you are coeliac or need a gluten-free diet do not trust this restaurant as their gluten-free protocols are not up to standard. Even though the menu is labelled gf their safety standards are severely lacking. We rang the restaurant the next day, they gave the standard diatribe, they denied our meals weren’t gf and went as far as to assure us that according to their documentation all gf protocols had been followed. Clearly their gf safety procedures are completely inadequate. They even asked us to provide a doctor’s note to say we have been glutened - I am a 55-year-old woman who has had coeliac disease for 26 years. I have travelled extensively and I have never been asked to provide a doctors note. They refused to refund our 2 meals which was £150 so not a cheap restaurant. We expected better!! I would go as far as to call this restaurant negligent.
• IsobelB267 (10/5): Perfection - I cannot think of anything they could have done that would have made our stay more comfortable or enjoyable - everything was perfect from start to finish. The staff are exemplary (and very lovely people) - everyone we encountered was friendly, helpful and engaging and went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable at every turn. The hotel is beautifully appointed, and they spare no effort or expense to create a lovely atmostphere and a luxury stay. The little extra attention to detail does not go unnoticed and was much appreciated. We found the food to be exceptional in quality and presentation - failry expensive but worth it. And such a pretty garden. The Peacock has it all. We will be back for sure.

Lovely welcome; cosy log fire lounge; intimate comfortable bar; excellent dining., all in a lovely 17th century dower house. Stayed 2 nights, would have loved to stay longer. If its in your budget then go and enjoy.
• tompyle10 (10/5): A wonderful hotel! - We decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary in the Peak District and booked into The Peacock for an overnight stay. We had a junior suite and were thrilled; it was wonderful. Full of old English charm, with a four poster bed, leather furniture and tasteful lighting. The hotel itself was wonderful, with log fires and comfortable lounges. The staff were first rate and were so friendly, helpful and attentive. We did not eat dinner but did have breakfast; it was superb, well cooked, hot and plentiful. A lovely hotel and highly recommended.
• jaredm423 (8/5): Corporate takeover has reduced quality - My husband and I have been visiting The Peacock for 15 years. Staying twice a year, usually for a couple of nights. I often leave a Tripadvisor review and sadly this will be the first time it is not 5 stars, the signs of cost cutting becoming clear, at least to us. Please don’t get me wrong, this is still a great place to visit and you will be looked after, but some small changes in details don’t work for us and this will regrettably no longer be our favourite close to home getaway it once was. All staff members were friendly, polite and well intentioned. Our personal taste means that we preferred the venue prior to the refurbishment last year (although this is our second visit since then). The new style feels more like a posh pub than the historic, antique coaching house feel it once had. The covering of the original stone floor in the bar, to us, is criminal! That along though would not have impacted our score. On check in we were asked to advise what time we would be eating breakfast. I queried this and was told it was new to help the staff plan! That isn’t putting the customer first. If I’m going to stay away from home I want to decide when I want my breakfast (within your hours) in the morning. I might take a walk first, or have a lie in. I might wake up early and hungry. It really isn’t a luxury experience to have to make that decision the afternoon prior. The room itself was lovely (room 7) but they have now done away with two prior amenities (complimentary shortbread and tea/coffee on arrival, and a turndown service). This is the first sign of cost cutting we noticed. On coming down for dinner at 17:30 for 18:00, despite passing the receptionist, we waited maybe 15 minutes before anybody came to the bar to take our drinks order. We were disappointed with the new (dare I say boring) offering of cocktails. On enquiring if they could still make our old favourite the cucumber and chilli martini, we were told not, albeit we were told that we weren’t the first people to ask that. The drinks we did order were well made. We were then asked which one of us was the pescatarian. Not once but in the end three times, each time advising that we had no food restrictions at all and neither of us were a pescatarian. The GM did say something like “don’t mind us we do know what we’re doing, honestly”. It didn’t fill me with confidence albeit the evening that followed was generally wonderful. The portions have reduced on the tasting menu, but, I actually think they are more suitable. Previously despite the awesome food quality, portions were so big that they were uncomfortable for a tasting menu. That said, the butter portion resembling the size of a pecan nut was insufficient to spread on half of one piece of bread (Lee gladly brought us more). I did miss the original Bakewell Best Bitter bread which was a staple for so long, but I understand things change. Dinner service was well paced and generally delicious but two dishes didn’t hit the spot. The halibut was overcooked (slightly but dry as a result) and the panna cotta was overset and quite hard. The deep bowl the halibut in was not suitable to enjoy the dish properly either. These are small points - those items certainly weren’t inedible, just that they missed perfection. That has never been the case previously so I wonder whether there has been a change in chef. Other than Lee (whose service was really great) we were not asked how dishes were when staff cleared our plates so did not raise this on the evening. Furthermore, when we declined a too up our wine which was offered, the waitress proceeded to top up our glasses anyway - clearly she just misheard. The breakfast offering has been reducing for some years now with the wonderful continental spread once offered long gone, but even since our last visit a few months ago, it’s dropped again in quality and offering. No longer are fruit, yoghurt and granola offered, for example. And our real bugbear with breakfast was the juice quality. Cheap, sweetened, nasty concentrated orange juice. A big drop in the premium freshly squeezed juices poured last time. Please charge an extra £5 a night if you have to but please bring back quality juice. This is not in keeping with your general offering. Thankfully the bacon quality remained exceptional, more akin to gammon. The food at breakfast was delicious, and great coffee too. Sadly it feels to us that Longbow have brought in some common aspects that suit their other pub like venues. This was a super find back 15 years ago and we enjoyed it thoroughly but its identity appears to be slipping away and more pub type aspects are being brought it like the bonquet seating in the dining rooms. This could be due to Longbow or possible the loss of several great staff recently who had been here for years. It was however lovely as always to see Valentine, one of the original staff members who always wears a smile and works incredibly hard to ensure everyone is looked after.
• R5163CRjulieh (10/5): Wonderful stay. - My husband and I had an overnight stay recently. It was a lovely place to visit. We had a very welcoming experience on arrival. Our room was 16 at the very top of the hotel. The stairs may have been problematic if you had reduced mobility so best to check. We had the Sunday roast which was beautifully cooked and presented. The waiting on staff were all very professional and personable. The lounges pre and post dinner were charming and had beautiful log burners adding to the ambience. Our bedroom was quiet, warm and cosy. The extra touches of chocolates, quality tea and coffee products and Penhaligon bathroom products added a touch of quality. The bed linens were high quality and the bed very comfortable. We had breakfast the next morning which was plentiful and a good choice of options. All the staff should be commended for their professionalism. One man stood out but sadly we didn’t get his name. He was a very tall slim man and he was very attentive and informative about what the hotel had to offer. He served our meal in the restaurant at night. Thank you to all staff for making our stay special. We will return.
• 24ht (10/5): Amazing afternoon in a lovely setting! - Took my partner, friends and out 5 doggies for afternoon tea on a random Wednesday in February. Just happened to be my 50th. Lovely experience, the afternoon tea, drinks and setting amazing. Any oversea visits would be wowed by this place. I am going to return to sample the full menu soon, but highly recommended !
• 260clarissad (10/5): Lovely January Getaway - Enjoyed a lovely 2 night stay at the Peacock. Beautifully decorated, nice touches including Penhaligon toiletries and a comfortable bed. Very peaceful with easy access to lots of top Peak District locations. The sitting room and bar area downstairs were excellent for an evening nightcap. Easy parking and staff very helpful. Thank-you!
• BeanandBird (8/5): A new favourite place to stay! - We stayed here for three nights for a quick getaway break on the recommendation of our friends. The welcome was pleasant and helpful and our room (6), was charming. Bed linens and bed comfort was top notch. Penhaligons toiletries appreciated and the little box of luxury chocs is a nice touch. The hotel is just lovely, very comfortable, beautifully decorated and the staff all willing and pleasant. The bar is a beautiful space and warm fires tended all day could be found in the lounge and bar areas. The first breakfast service was not at all great but the manager soon put it right and all was well thereafter. The breakfast ingredients are all high quality and it arrived hot, although my ‘over easy’ eggs never quite arrived as runny as they aught to have been. Chef puts a lot of thought into the menu and we enjoyed all our food which was perfectly seasoned, something not always found in restaurants these days. The wine list had a good spread of wines for most tastes. Cocktails all excellent and perfectly mixed and presented with little dishes of crisps and warm nuts. The shower/bath arrangement in room 6 needs a re-think. The shower flow is weak, presumably due to the screening not being adequate due to the configuration. It is difficult to get close to the stream of water because of the bath slope. It’s awkward and not commensurate with the room experience. We would suggest removing the bath and creating a fully enclosed double shower space. This was the only thing that kept our rating away from ‘excellent’. Staff need to be clear about how customers should be using the loyalty app as I had conflicting information offered throughout the stay. All in all we had the most relaxing time and would like to thank everyone for looking after us so nicely. Highly recommended!
• D1411QTlindsaym (4/5): Food was inedible - We visited the peacock for lunch, unfortunately I was unable to eat mine, it was over seasoned, all I could taste was salt. We did mention this to the waiting staff who I found to be a little rude. I also over heard another diner complaining about the same thing. We left disappointed we had read reviews before making our booking and it looked really nice, unfortunately this wasn’t the case
• KPO-RPO (10/5): Brilliant visit on Boxing day. - Friendly and helpful staff. Dog friendly. The bar area had an excellent atmosphere on Boxing day. Food and drink was top notch. Gorgeouse hotel with superb staff.
• Jewels801 (10/5): Fantastic New Year stay - Just returned from a 3 night stay over twixmas /NY. This is the third time we have treated ourselves here at this time of year and it once again did not disappoint. We stayed in Room 5, our favourite - a junior suite with lovely four poster bed and a nice comfy chairs to relax. Our first night we ate in the bar at our favourite “peacock table”. The menu was still the same as the dining room but it made it a little less formal after our long drive. The special tasting menu on New Year’s Eve was a spectacular event from start to finish - the food was just first class and the service was excellent. Once again a special shout out to Lee who looked after us that night along with his expert knowledge on the wine flight we enjoyed with each course. Once again (like during our stay last Easter), Lee made it such a memorable occasion and we felt very special. The staff overall are wonderful, the level of service is so good without being overbearing (would also like to shout out Sammy, Rhiannon, Marcus and Valentine amongst many others who looked after us so well). On our last night we had dinner in the dining room, another wonderful feast and service to match. My husband is gluten intolerant but this was no problem at all as adaptations were made to menu items which weren’t already GF. Overall we had such a wonderful time making more memories and look forward to returning soon. Thank you to everyone.

The hotel is a beautiful old building our room was traditionally furnished the bed was extremely comfortable. Fantastic walk in shower. We had dinner in the restaurant which was very good and breakfast the following morning equally as good. Service was impeccable by all members of staff. Can’t wait to return.

• LauraWarrington96 (10/5): Perfect place for a festive night away! - This was our first stay at this beautiful, peaceful hotel set in the lovely village of Rowsley, and it exceeded all our expectations. The atmosphere was cosy, warm, and festive. Excellent service and delicious food. It was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a countryside getaway, with Bakewell and Chatsworth House right on the doorstep. We will most certainly be returning for another visit soon!
• ToursJones (10/5): A luxury Christmasy break - It’s a real treat to stay here in this 17th century inn. The traditional country style is lovely at this time of year with Christmas decorations and log fires. The welcome is warm and all the staff are very friendly. Our room had a huge comfortable bed and a view over the garden. A delicious breakfast is included and cooked to order - try the eggs benedict with top quality ham. We also enjoyed dinner, especially the duck and beef Wellington main courses. The cheese board is very good. The drinks menu offers a lot of choice and beer on tap is avaiable - try the Chatsworth Gold. All is beautifully presented and well served. A luxury stay here combined with a visit to Christmas at Chatsworth is magical.
• katherineeclark (10/5): Don’t hesitate to book - We stayed recently, following a day at Chatsworth, as a treat for my mother’s 80th birthday and it was absolutely perfect. Everything was wonderful from the moment we entered, the staff, the decor, the beautiful Christmas decorations. We stayed for dinner and it was wonderful. Another review mentioned it was cold and they should light the fire, we sat next to the fire and were grateful it wasn’t lit as we’d have been too hot. I stayed in a single room and they’d thought of everything, beautiful tea / coffee with fresh milk, dressing gown / slippers, well positioned plug sockets, gorgeous chocolates and bottled water. I’d 100% recommend.
• katelE9215IA (4/5): Very expensive and uninspiring burger and fries - My husband and I live locally and received a £20 voucher off the menu. We went on a Saturday lunch and ordered the burger and fries at £25 each! We assumed for this amount of money it would be something special. How wrong we were. It wasn’t even worth the £15 reduced amount we paid each. The small burger was on a very average bun with a small amount of tomato relish plus 1 lettuce leaf and 1 slice of tomato plus 2 tiny slices of gherkin. We had a few “triple cooked” cold and shrivelled chips which were rock hard and inedible. No side salad or coleslaw. That was it. For £25!!!! We won’t be back.

Why? - Lovely hotel would recommend if the heating is turned up Bedroom: comfy bed, very nice linen Bathroom: clean, nice, good large basin Dining room: slightly souless, chilly - fireplace but fire wasn't lit ..... A shame. The food is excellent, service friendly and very nice, but dinner rather spoilt by lack of heating and dull atmosphere Lounge Comfortable - but what's the point of a log burner if it isn't lit? We realize times are hard for hotels, but if your guests are cold they won't be happy.
• mshaw2025 (10/5): Luxury, friendliness and history. - If you want a really special place, in a beautiful setting, near to some amazing things to do in the Peak District. Stay here. We have stayed here about 7 times. We have booked alomst all the rooms and the suite. Every room is stunning. The bar area and the restuarant are both top notch and the staff are friendly and informal - in a good way. You don't feel like you have to behave in a 'posh' way - we always hosted my Dad here - a proper local Derbyshire man, and he loved it. The best thing here is that I am a bit strange in that I always take my cuddly Scooby Doo to hotels. At this hotel, when we got back to the room in the afternoon or evening, Scooby was tucked up in bed with a tangerine in his hand or holding the TV remote. We laughed a lot. Nothing was ever said by the staff - it was just such a nice touch. Yes, it's not cheap. It shouldn't be. You will be treated so well here. It's special in a very top way. The people who work here really know how to host people - they're just brilliant. Of course, the food is great and you can bring your dog in some rooms.
• D4364KSlindaa (10/5): Excellent hotel in beautiful surroundings - We stayed 1 night after visiting Chatsworth House & Gardens & Christmas Market. I have eaten at the Peacock many years ago but never stayed, its fabulous. The situation within Rowsley village is beautiful with ample parking. We were greeted very warmly on arrival and offered drinks and coffee. The lounge is very cozy and comfortable with reading material to sit and relax. Our room was a suite with every facility you needed from coffee/tea making facilities, radio, TV etc. The furniture is excellent and bed linens and drapes very high quality. The superking bed was like sleeping on a cloud, with a wonderful mattress topper. Beautiful products in the bathroom also. Great shower ! The full English breakfast was delicious, with great staff serving. Check out again was friendly and every effort had been made to ensure we had a good stay. Im sure we will be back in the future, our stay was excellent.
• SueGee66 (10/5): The perfect haven - Leaving a wonderful family wedding on a high, bad weather and a car breakdown forced us to make last minute arrangements in an area we were not familiar with. Luck would have it that the breakdown in Rowsley led us to The Peacock. Hospitality beyond expectations from Hilary on reception, Lee and Poppy in the bar, transformed a bleak situation to an unexpected special end to our weekend. The hotel oozes comfort with its warming fire in the bar and plush furnishings. The delicious light meal & drinks, along with the service, were of high quality restaurant standards. • Explorer1964 (10/5): A warm welcome - I've only ever visited The Peacock for a drink, whilst on a walk, once earlier in the year when I was doing the Derwent Valley Heritage Way and again today after a short ramble from Chatsworth. On both occasions I enjoyed my visit, the beer was excellent and the staff were friendly. A nice warm fire in the public bar area adds to the cosy feel of the place. The building itself is fascinating, dating from the 17th century, and the period features are exquisite. I look forward to another visit.
• I4743JArichardl (8/5): Lovely stay in this beautiful cozy hotel. - We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful hotel. It is cosy and welcoming- the staff were all very friendly, cheerful and helpful (despite us overhearing other guests speaking to them in a condescending manner at times). The small bar area is lovely with a big open fire and good quality wines and glasses (I hate cheap glasses!) . The restaurant is very nice- we enjoyed our meal and the wine was very good for a sensible price. The food is expensive, which we don’t mind as it was good quality, but it’s nudging the top end of cost for what it was, in our opinion. Breakfast was a little inconsistent, but the ingredients were all good quality, and again staff were helpful and friendly. Our room was fairly small, which is ok as I booked the cheaper room option, but very nicely done with a lovely bathroom- good quality soap/ shower gels etc were appreciated along with quality teas/ coffee/ lovely chocolates. Everything was perfect, apart from the crucial bit… the bed! I’d guess that more has likely been spent on the beautiful curtains than the bedding which was not quite the standard we’d expect for the hotel: the pillows were synthetic and not very comfortable, the mattress had a gap between it and the headboard, and the bed slopes to one side due to the uneven floor (expected in an old building, but the bed could be levelled I’d think). I also think the hotel could reduce their heating bill- our room was very hot with radiators on despite it being fairly mild outside so we had to leave a window open all the time. If the bed was better, I’d happily give 5/5!
• Cleveleysfoodie (10/5): Classic - We recently stayed here to celebrate my wife’s birthday and from start to finish our stay was excellent, this is a classic English hotel with lovely ambiance and decor the food is delicious and the staff are brilliant what ever the season this is a wonderful place to stay.

Having passed by lots and lots of times, I was looking forward to staying at the Peacock and what an experience it was! It is probably the best hotel experience I’ve ever had - anywhere. Everything about the place is top notch; the atmosphere, the food, the room, the service, the comfort and the attention to details- just wonderful!
• JulianPeace66 (10/5): Charm with comfort - A one night getaway as a treat to ourselves. Well worth the trip. The hotel is a mix of old world charm and comfortable guest experiences. Our room was lovely, with a view out of the front of the hotel. Dinner was excellent, from the canapes to the dessert and breakfast was similarly good - one of the best Eggs Benedict I have ever had. Staff were great - very friendly, but also quietly efficient. I think we'll be back!

• Q7059OLtrevorw (6/5): Disappointing Lunch - We are long-standing visitors to the restaurant at the Peacock. It has been our favourite local go-to place to have lunch for many years. We were nervous when it got taken over this year, but pleasantly surprised by seeing the tasteful and sympathetic renovation when it re-opened. More importantly we were relieved to see the new management had retained Dan Smith, the outstanding chef whose dishes we love (his fish of the day creations were exquisite). But, sadly, we were informed he no longer works at the Peacock, and our lunch today with friends disappointed all of us. The confit duck was tiny, slightly greasy and had no crispy outer skin. The rosti was more like a small (single) croquet potato, and apart from three tiny slivers of apple that was it (£27). Other choices in our group were equally disappointing. Waiters used to bring out different varieties of bread and home-made butter to nibble on while you waited for your meal, but not any more. Gone are the free petit-fours with the coffee too. The menu has increased its amount of standard pub fare such as burgers/fish and chips etc. For us it has lost its unique and special dining experience, both in terms of the menu and the extra little touches (portion size was always on the smaller size, but quality of cooking and a few extra bits meant you could always come away satisfied without the need for three courses). The staff (although there seems to have been a big turnover) were as lovely and attentive as always but, at the moment, they have no overall chef and it certainly shows.
• hoteljunkie99 (10/5): Elegant rooms and good food - Peacock Hotel review We spent two nights at the Peacock in a lovely room high up on the second floor. This was not very sensible from the point of view of the stairs (the second flight is very steep and narrow), but we decided to book the only room that has a walk-in shower – it was apparently put in because they couldn't fit a bath in the space. With my mobility issues, I attempted to minimise the number of times I had to go up and down said stairs. But the room and furnishings are lovely, with Penhaligon toiletries and hand-made chocolates, cute little boxes of tea and fresh (sterilised) milk in bottles. It's also really quiet, even though the hotel is on a main road (there is secondary double glazing on the windows.) The young lady who checked us in was pleasant and efficient, and made sure our cases were carried up and down. (Thanks Katie.) The drinks in the bar were excessively expensive; when we came to pay our bill, we found we'd been charged £36 for two gin and tonics! We chose the Chatsworth gin, but even so... I fear the hotel is Having A Laugh where drinks are concerned. Food was generally excellent; the chocolate fondant was a particular standout. If I have some slight criticisms, I felt that the baby artichokes were rather overwhelmed by the pastry base, and my glass of rosé wasn’t chilled – but then I should have asked for that to be remedied. There was a good choice on the breakfast menu, including the croissant with smoked salmon, cream cheese and scrambled egg shown below. Service was pleasant and attentive. More could be made of the history of the hotel – I’m sure other guests as well as myself would be interested.
• johnbX5427CX (6/5): Disappointing - Booked for Diner,bed and breakfast as a Birthday treat for my wife. The room which was described as a De-Lux room was located at the back of the hotel with a view over outbuildings and a car park. It had a tiny bathroom with no expel air and a heated towel rail that did not work.Disappointing to say the least. The evening meal menu was very limited (4 main courses) but to be fair the food was very good and was backed up by first class service. The "Full English" breakfast consisted of One item ie Sausage,bacon,half a tomato and one mushroom with a small spoonful of scrambled egg. Not what I would call a Full English. With a total spend of nearly £500 we were left feeling very disappointed.

Would’ve been nice if there had been a couple of comfortable chairs in the room. Also, having only a small cafetière in the room means that it has to be cleaned out after each use. That includes disposing of coffee grinds. Where do you put them?

We came for an anniversary lunch and it felt so special. A very pleasant glass of fizz in the garden followed by a lovely lunch indoors. Staff were friendly and helpful and we had a lovely welcome as well as an anniversary card on our table. I just hope I will be able to stay one day!
• Fiona (8/5): - The room was quiet and cozy making us feel like we were really on vacation. The beds were the comfiest we experienced on our 6-day roadtrip. My only disappointments were that they charged for the paper in the morning but there was no mention of the charge when I ordered it the night before (I guess I'm living in a bygone era in my mind when papers were given freely), and my poached eggs on toast came out on burnt toast and the yolks were almost hard (not at all runny). Otherwise, it was a great stay.

• Inspector_More (10/5): Best in Class - We've stayed at a number of hotels similar to The Peacock and can say confidently that it is best in class. Located just outside Bakewell, The Peacock sits comfortably beside the Derwent and has well kept grounds. It's beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and somebody has excellent taste in period furniture. It fits with the 400 year old fabric and feel of the building. The welcome is remarkably warm and friendly, which sets the tone. Somehow they have managed to instil that je ne sais quoi with all of the guest-facing staff. That is a huge achievement in hospitality and not easy to either deliver or replicate. Well done team Peacock, it has been noticed and appreciated. Please keep it up. It makes a big difference. It's certainly worth eating here. The food is, without exception, first rate. A really nice touch was the unexpected amuse bouche with pre-dinner drinks in the bar. Breakfast also was fabulous and shouldn't be missed. Yes, it is a wee bit pricey. However, that is more than matched by the entire experience. I should also say that the pink SMEG kettle in the room was an inspired inclusion. It's light years ahead of the usual anonymous article placed as an afterthought in most hotel rooms. Quirky is good!

Our room had a 4 poster bed which was one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in. The staff were amazing, lovely greeting at reception too. We had booked in the restaurant for Sunday night and Sunday dinner was amazing. Sirloin of beef was outstanding, wine delicious. Service again outstanding in the restaurant and the same for breakfast. Highly recommend

We were looked after in our stay with passion from every member of staff we encountered. Our tasting menu that evening was truly wonderful and a fabulous wine and cocktail list that was very suitably priced and packed with some very interesting wines. We retired to our rooms for one of the best sleeps ever. The rooms had welcomed air-conditioning. Breakfast was equally good. Could not fault ThePeacock at Rowsley.

We booked through booking.com and according to the policy we were due to still pay in full due to the short timeframe which I appreciate. I phoned the Peacock to explain our circumstances and ask if our booking could be moved. They were VERY UNDERSTANDING and moved our booking without any hesitation. To me this is great customer service unlike the Star Inn at Harome where unfortunately we had a very similar situation last September on my wife’s side. They stuck to the policy 🙄. Thank you to the Peacock, we look forward to coming later in the year!
• DJMartin123 (10/5): Sunday Lunch - My Daughter bought me a voucher for a meal for last years birthday. During the changeover between owners I asked the new owner if they would honour and they agreed. The meal was superb, I believe they’ve changed the menu from Table de Hote to A La Carte. We had a wonderful starter of Salmon followed by the Beef. The beef was sublime in quality and cooking, the only issue was that we had no room for dessert which was a shame. We finished off with coffee and petit fours on the lawn at the rear of the restaurant on the lovely lawn. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the service provided by Valentine(hope that’s correct 🤞) She is indeed a credit to your restaurant. Not an everyday treat but lovely all the same.
• johncT5997ZO (8/5): Not quite the Peacock's Tail - We visiting the Peacock both to stay and to dine over nearly five decades. Under the ownership of Haddon Hall, and the terrific kitchen and front of house staff, the food was, in the words of the late food critic Michael Winner, Historic! An evcer changing choice menu cooked to better than Michelin star levels and with a great alternative bar menu of much better than average pub grub. Since being taken over, some changes have occurred and, sadly, not all quite for the better. The place has been given a very sympathetic makeover and the loyal staff are as warmly welcoming and wonderful as ever with nothing being too much trouble. In the tastefully redecorated restaurant the ambience is great although the over-music maybe a touch too loud at times. The menu has seen some changes. To start with, the bar choices have completely gone which has ruled out a host of deliciously well priced meals popular with many. The three or six course menu still offers choices with the single concession of a steak replacing the former bar choices. Having dined a few times since the change-over, it would seem that the choices are more fixed now which offers less variety to those choosing to stay for a few nights. One outstanding feature of the Peacock meals in the past has always been the amazing and greatly varied canapes presented free (obviously costed into the whole meal)with our pre-dinner drinks. Stupendous variety, flavour and creativity that merited an outstanding award on their own! Now, one has to choose these at an extra £5.00 each and we are not so sure if the chef's have been told to keep it simpler and probably cheaper. Bread is now a single offering of two slices of treacle or sourdough only per two diners. The wine list is OK. Different to the previous list and some favourite but more unusual wines are no longer available (such as delicious plum Saki so good as a lighter port alternative with after dinner cheese). The once terrific choice of cheese menu is no more and guests are presented with three or four, take it or leave it, cheeses After dinner drinks are also a bit odd. No Irish Whisky or choice of Grappas as in the old days and if you want brandy it's either cheap Spanish stuff or very a dear cognac at £37.00 a shot. Would we go again? Certainly, but maybe less often to stay or dine as a couple of nights stay more or less exhausted our food preferences on this menu which is likely to be in place over a longer period. Dining at the Peacock seems to have become more corporate management instructed than individually and fantastically creative. We know it's difficult times for the industry but surely it is better to reach for the stars than just sink into the average. The Peacock, after all, has a brilliant and unsurpassed plumage!!

Stayed overnight on Sunday, dinner was very good, had the sirloin with all the trimmings, perfectly cooked. The wall garden open to residents is such a wonderful peaceful space, very relaxing. Great breakfast too. The service at the Peacock was excellent. A special mention to Lee in the restaurant. Highly recommend this hotel.

• A5192YPchriss (10/5): Impeccable - I stayed at The Peacock in June 2025, it was the final stop on a 2 week European road trip that had taken me to and seen me stop at top class establishments in Koblenz, Baden-Baden, Strasbourg and Lièges. Without question, The Peacock was the top pick. Here’s why… 1. On arrival I drove into a large, out of the way white gravelled car park. Someone had obviously thought about its design. Spacious enough so that people won’t dink their expensive cars because they can park a reasonable distance from each other, yet small enough to feel like an exclusive overnight guest. Nice. 2. After checking in I wasn’t handed my key and given directions, I was instead shown to my room by a member of staff. My room door was opened for me and the room had been pre-prepared for my arrival - a soft light was on, as was a quiet DAB radio providing classical background music. Nice. Forward planning in evidence again. 3. Attention to detail. I was asked if I’d like a morning paper and alarm call. Would I like help carrying my luggage in? Everything was meticulously arranged. Items lined up. There was symmetry. Colours were coordinated. The furniture was expensive and in excellent condition. The temperature was perfect. The smell was pleasing. The staff were charming and in uniform. The dining rooms were beautiful. The plates were heavy. The cutlery was spotless. The wine glasses were delicate. Even the books on the shelves were spot on, hardbacks, and good ones… My point is, to achieve this level of excellence takes a lot of planning, carefully thought out and executed with precision over time. 4. My evening meal was superb. Quality ingredients that complemented each other creating dishes that worked. An excellent wine list too. The place I stayed at in Strasbourg had a Michelin star. The Peacock was better. I could go on, but you get my drift. The Peacock at Rowsley is the perfect example of a place that has got it right.
• Meghan (10/5): - Our stay here was absolutely fabulous from start to finish. The entire hotel and its grounds are gorgeous — every room is beautifully decorated, from their library sitting room to the onsite bar to each guest room. There were so many beautiful touches: classical music playing in the room when we entered, chocolates on the table, bath salts in the lovely modern bathroom, etc. The bed was extremely comfortable. Service was impeccable; you can sit and relax in the garden or study and someone will come check on you, take a drink order, etc. I would highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a beautiful, luxurious stay in the Peak District.

• Y607ICdianar (10/5): Best of British hotel, food and service - This is a very special hotel with some of the best service we have ever had. The hotel is beautifully furnished in comfortable country style with attention to the smallest details. The rooms are extremely comfortable. Food in the dining room is excellent, a really good selection and just delicious. And a fantastic breakfast. Combine all of this with just the most beautiful setting in the heart of the Peak District and this place is hard to beat. But it’s the excellent staff who are superbly trained that really makes the experience so good. I can’t recommend enough. Thank you to all at The Peacock for making our stay so very lovely.

Hilary dealt with the situation perfectly. You felt important as a guest and we used the Peacock as a base for a Fly Fishing Course, led by Steve, which was a truly brilliant day. Five minutes from Bakewell and a range of shopping outlets. Food was exceptional, though no longer able to eat in the bar. We will be returning!

The food, service and ambience couldn't be faulted, every single member of staff made us feel so welcome we almost felt as though they had invited us into their home! Can't remember everyones name but Lucas springs to mind, thanks Lucas and the Ops Director, so very friendly and just amazing service and thank you chef, the food was spot on!! oh ... and the gift of doughnuts, as a doughnut fan they are the best!! Not impressed with the lounge decor though, thought it looked much classier and expensive before the renovation ... sorry!
• RWilson147 (10/5): Lovely Luxurious Lunch - We heard the Longbow Group had taken over at The Peacock at Rowsley, so we thought we’d try it as an old friend worked there many years ago. We went for lunch as part of a day trip to the Peak District. We were greeted at the door and shown to our pre-booked table in the bar and given menu’s to select from at our leisure. The bar was an absolute delight with bare stone walls and timber fixtures and fittings with jazz music playing. The bar offers an array of drinks including a hand pulled Thornbridge ale Lord Marples when we visited an absolute delight and rarity at 4 star hotels. We had a light lunch of sandwiches followed by exquisite desserts. We were so impressed that we immediately booked for lunch with friends when we will be visiting The Peak District for a weekend in the near future. The Peacock is a new favourite, which we will be staying at and sampling dining in the restaurant in the future.
• anthonyh265 (8/5): Treat yourself, it’s beautiful - Nice warm welcome as we were shown to a lovely traditional yet modern room. Enjoyed an afternoon lager in the garden with polite table service. When we came down later for pre-dinner drinks we went to the bar area, sampled the wine and took the bottle out into the very relaxing garden at which point there were more guests. Our seating time passed by nearly half an hour so we made it known to the staff. No problem, we were brought menus and offered our canapés (everyone else seemed to now be ahead of us). We were taken into the beautiful restaurant where we mentioned we didn’t receive our canapés, this now being nearly 1 & half hours since our original 19.30 table booking. But we were in gear, the canapés and every single dish (we did the all in overnight stay package) were just out of this world. Some of the best food we’ve tasted. Unfortunately it was about 23.00 when we wrapped up so our nightcap (we love a few post dinner cocktails) had passed. We even took the last of dessert to the room and asked if we could settle up in the morning. The room and bed was very comfortable and clean (like the whole hotel) AC is available or you can open windows. TVs are modern, not that we bothered as the hotel is so nice with beautiful surroundings and pleasant ambiance. I would definitely recommend but unfortunately if you don’t speak up, you maybe left out. We felt other, larger groups, were a priority. But make no mistake, The Peacock is an excellent establishment all round.
• fayb2025 (10/5): Good staff, good food. - Car park next to the hotel is free for visitors. One spot for electric charging, an overnight charge is £25. Staff very helpful. Good sized room, very clean. Big comfy bed. Big smart tv, not logged into anything though, you need to log 8n on your own account to use Netflix etc. small box of chocolates was a nice touch. Breakfast was in a lovely bright room and was delicious. Cosy bar and library rooms to visit. Nice and quiet. All in all, a little pricey, but a lovely hotel and we very much enjoyed our stay.

We were met by friendly staff who showed us to our table. We were showed the lunch menu which had an excellent choice of dishes for a lovely 3 course lunch. The table service was excellent, Lee was particularly welcoming and also another young lady (whose name we didn’t know) both looked after us extremely well. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, served in a timely manner given the dining room was full. Congratulations to the chef for such a fabulous menu. Thanks again to Lee for looking after us so well. Highly recommend it to anyone passing by.
• Jewels801 (10/5): Perfect in every way - We have just returned from the most wonderful 2 night stay at the Peacock - we have stayed a few times now but this is our first visit following the change in ownership. Oh my word, it is even better (if that’s possible) - beautiful new decor with subtle changes in furniture and layouts and the same familiar lovely staff, some of whom remembered us, and everyone looked after us so well. We stayed in room 5, a junior suite with four poster as a treat which was wonderful. The food is absolutely exquisite, some of the best we have ever experienced in our years of staying in hotels around the world. Attention to detail is fantastic and my husbands gluten intolerance catered for perfectly in that every dish could be adapted with no problem or hesitation. We enjoyed dinner both evenings with the spectacular tasting menu on the second evening. Just fantastic - words alone are not enough to describe the experience. We were looked after in the dining room by the most delightful gentleman (sorry I didn’t get his name but he was very tall and slim - please express our gratitude once again to him) who’s professional approach combined with such a warm manner made this a very special evening which we will remember for a long time. Also for the first time we have visited when the weather has been warm enough to enjoy a drink outside on the terrace underneath the most beautiful cherry tree in full blossom. Overall we can’t give enough praise to the superb team at the Peacock. We love the changes you have made and can’t wait to come back. In fact we are now hopefully watching out for your new website with a view to coming back to celebrate New Year. Thank you.

• philipcJ9455EZ (10/5): Warm Welcome and Enjoyable Stay - What helps create a perfect stay? A warm welcome from courteous staff that continues throughout your stay, Superb customer service. Breakfast was excellent, as it as a Monday stay we ate at The Ashford Arms ( great food and service there too). The Room number 3, suite with four poster, had a comforting feel, as though you were part of history. Will visit again and sample the dinner menu. Blossoms lovely too!
• davidnM4490BC (10/5): exceptional in parts - I have known the Peacock for over 40 years, staying here for our wedding night 43 years ago, we returned recently for my birthday, the food is exceptional, but the refurbishment is straight out of 1976, why not push boundaries as you have with the food, Art and design that make you think, the food and service are in a different league, the refurbishment is a backward step, please think again and make the whole experience special.
• Sueandso (10/5): An evening to remember - Our family of nine - three generations - were staying just across the road and we had dinner at the Peacock to celebrate the Aged Grandparents' 80th birthdays. We received the warmest of welcomes at the front door, and we had a superb meal. The food all looked so beautiful as well as tasting delicious, and we were served with great attentiveness and style. Highly recommended for a special occasion.

Oh, and the grounds and garden are gorgeous—-right on a river with great views of stone bridges. Five stars all around!

The tasting menu was amazing, with delicious flavors in every dish. The wine pairing was spot on and made the meal even better. A big thank you to James for his excellent service—he was friendly, professional, and made the evening special. Highly recommend!
• ali123badger (10/5): Same excellent standard! - It was a real treat to return to the Peacock. This was our first visit since the new ownership and we were taking friends for a special occasion. We had the same warm welcome as always and it was great to see all the staff members who make the Peacock experience so special. The food was absolutely fantastic, between us we had the lamb, venison and duck - all fantastic. We then all had a dessert - again, delicious. Really great flavours. All in all, a perfect lunch with exceptional service in a wonderful setting 😍

• 397keithn (8/5): Great for a special visit - We've been here several times previously - to stay over (which was excellent) and for lunch in the restaurant. This time we ate in the very atmospheric bar. Overall, an enjoyable experience. The staff are always highly attentive, the food is very good, although a touch on the pricey side, for example coffee is £9.50, so this is special occasion territory.
• dawnmH660YJ (10/5): Superb! - Where do we start? Had lunch today and couldn’t fault anything. From the attentive yet discreet staff to the sublime food, everything was exceptional. We chose to have the canapés, which were amazing and managed to pack so much flavour into each one. Followed by the onion consommé and goats cheese curd. We both had duck followed by the chocolate, blood orange and prune and baked Mauritian sugars tart. Each course was superb and expertly served. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon
• pathW1735IA (10/5): Excellent Sunday Lunch - Delightful Sunday Lunch. Salmon starter delicious. Roast beef and all the trimmings cooked to perfection. Apple crumble for desert absolutely divine. Rounded out with a bottle of wine and home-made bread. Service and atmosphere is fabulous. Will definitely be back.
• mickeyt596 (10/5): Sunday Lunch - Have waited a long time to experience Sunday lunch at the Peacock as it has not been an offering for a number of years. 3 course lunch with a varied choice of options including vegan and gluten free. All the starters were accompanied with home made sour dough bread and home made butter. My chicken liver parfait was very tasty and light in texture with brioche bread. Roast beef (lovely and pink for me) with Yorkshire pudding and roasted veggies were all excellent and a good portion size. The desert selections were sumptuous with the chocolate rum and raisin outstanding in presentation and flavours. The service given by the staff was attentive and very efficient. The wait has been worth it and look forward to future visits especially in the summer with a beautiful outside area for outside dining and drinks

I've always avoided fine dining thinking I wouldn't like the food or it would be too expensive and this was the complete opposite. Lovely food, staff were so welcoming. Joel and Valentine took great care of us and provided great recommendations on wine and food. Beautifully decorated and a great place to go for a special occasion.
• Mr a s cotton (10/5): Best country hotel - Amazing! We were initially put in Room 3 which we found a little disappointing for what we had paid. We asked for Room 5 (our very favourite room) and we were delighted to change rooms (although slightly confused why we hadn’t been offered that one first?). Room 5 was stunning and impeccably clean and inviting, although very ( a little too) warm on arrival Our bar meal was excellent, the bar manager was wonderful and kept the real fire stoked all evening which enhanced the cosy pub experience. Breakfast was amazing and the staff as always were exceptional. The homemade shortbread biscuits which we enjoyed with coffee in our room were truly delicious. We live less than half an hour away and this has become our once yearly treat. A truly fabulous country hotel with excellent food and impeccable service. Thanks all!
• Fiona (8/5): - Lovely historic property, a very quiet and pleasant stay. Dog was allowed in our room only, not to eat. Very comfortable bed and warm room. No fridge in the room, but had tea and coffee facilities, you had to ask daily for milk. Close to plenty of sightseeing and rambling. Hotel also provides fly fishing in season, so will return for this, as perfect by the River Derwent.

• Stefan (10/5): Equipo muy profesional - El hotelito es una preciosa casa/palacio del siglo XVI, con fuertes muros de piedra y una hermosa terraza y jardín. El desayuno excelente y el servicio impecable, súper profesional.
• Tim (6/5): Tim Mills - The bed was awful, just 2 single beds put together , no topper so it was very uncomfortable and sloped into the middle , awful 😣
• Lucy (10/5): - Lovely hotel - very cosy and festive over the New Year period. Pretty gardens with a river running at the bottom. Slightly disappointed not to have had a dog bed or any bowls considering the additional dog charge. There was some confusion with the level of service between the restaurant and the hotel which left us waiting for our meal alone in the bar area. However, staff were very friendly.
