Guest Reviews
- Eliana (10/5): -
- Ventura Travel (10/5): - This was a group trip with 11 people. The ryokan had a service to pick up the group from Matsumoto Station. There were eathquakes in Nagano, and the train was severely delayed. The ryokan was very kind about adjusting the pick-up time and serving dinner quite late. Their kindness and flexibility saved the trip!
- Wakashima (8/5): -

- satosi (6/5): -
- Preeti (7/5): - The staff were very welcoming, happy and helpful. We experienced an authentic cultural Japanese way of life including food and onsen. The view from the private onsen is gorgeous. The interiors are a bit tired looking.

- kouno (7/5): -
- Ross (6/5): Good location and facilities, but a little dated for the price requested. - Family onsen was nice. Good location and family friendly facilities. For the price, water bottles and more towels should provided. Bloodstains from previous guests on bedding was an issue.
- Tanun (8/5): Very good -
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Nicole (8/5): Nice Riokan - Food was excellent and staff were very friendly and helpful, although didn't speak much english. The only downside was the facility was a bit worn -stained carpets, peeling wallpaper, and musty smell
- Mark (9/5): Superb -
- Sean (10/5): - This is out of town, but I’m a sucker for traditional onsen ryokan. This place has aged well, rooms are spacious, there is a private onsen on the top floor for 40min usage, and there are a couple of great restaurants 10mins walking distance around. Lawson out the front. Staff were excellent. Only stayed 1 night but would go back. Great if you have a car.
- Selena (6/5): - This is a cute ver traditional ryokan. However it is in dire need of a remodel. Many stains on the carpets and walls, ripped wallpaper, more mold in the baths than I’m comfortable with. The rooms themselves are nice and clean but all the amenities are quite old. Has enough parking for only 3 cars so keep that in mind. Very very friendly staff though, and the food is wonderful! One big problem however is WIFI is only on the 1ST FLOOR! NOWHERE ELSE! So if you want a quiet device free stay, it’s perfect, if you’re low on data, maybe skip this one.
- Sergey (9/5): Superb -
- Daren (8/5): - If you’d like to experience an authentic ryokan with onsen and terrific kaiseki dining this place is a good choice. Although the facilities show some wear and tear, overall it’s clean and adequately maintained. The staff ensure guests feel welcomed and taken care of. I would stay again.
- Beth (1/5): We left after one night. No refund - The sleeping mat way to thin.
It looked like black mold in the hot bath.
- Colin (10/5): - This is a very well maintained traditional hot spring inn. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The baths were wonderful after a long day of sightseeing. We opted for the breakfast which was excellent. Highly recommend if you want a taste of traditional Japan. Matsumoto castle was beautiful and we happened to hit a day when there was a local beer festival.
- Kwok Sai (8/5): -
- Henry (10/5): - Yumotoya is a little long in the tooth, but still a lovely and comfortable place to lay your head. Staff was helpful and friendly, and the facility is kept clean and tidy, even if it is getting a little old (although we found the Showa Era charm to be part of the appeal). The private Onsen was wonderful, and offers views of the surrounding city and mountains.
- Tsun Ho William (10/5): - A traditional Japanese onsen hotel. Staff are experienced and served with heart. Very nice experience if stay, would definitely recommend to anyone who will travel to this area!!
- Leonard Teck Seng (8/5): - This ryokan has a rustic feel with its traditional design. The staff are warm and welcoming. The Kaiseki-style breakfast and dinner were sumptuous with a wide spread of traditional Japanese cuisine. Only complaint though is that the wifi access is only available in the lobby area and not in the rooms. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience at Yumotoya. Highly recommended for those looking at traditional ryokan stays in Matsumoto.
- David (10/5): Fantastic ryokan in a great area - We stayed here with a large group. Our rooms were comfortable, and the food was amazing! Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating and the onsen were nice. Close to all Matsumoto sights but in a quiet neighborhood. Id definitely stay here again!
- Jon (10/5): Very very warming and welcoming! - The personnel was really nice, they wanted to help us with everything. We couldn’t get the local bike rental app working, and we asked if there was any possibility’s for renting a bike. When we came back from our room, the two woman that worked at the check in fixed two bikes for us!
- michel (8/5): - I made a mistake in my choice of location
The ryokan was a little old and 20 minutes away from the city by bus
- keith (8/5): - What a great neighbourhood of Asama. An easy walk to the Asama Onsen and several quaint retaurants
(5/5): Passable -
- Laurie (10/5): - Arriving in a taxi, two men graciously took our luggage up to our room while we checked in at reception who greeted us by name which was posted on the door to our room. Slippers available for our use were stored on a shelf to switch out our shoes. The room was spacious with the futons already set out. There were two tables in the room - one with chairs near the windows and one between the table and futons at floor-sitting level set with tea and a snack. After dinner, fresh tea supplies were waiting.
The dining room is a beautiful space with slatted screens set up between some tables, giving the illusion of privacy. Tables are assigned for the stay. Our waitress was lovely. She explained everything (in Japanese.) Dinner and breakfast were both traditional meals - each plate delicious - some courageous bites on my part. For me, the highlights were individual shabu shabu and excellent tempura. The same woman served us breakfast.
After dinner, it was onsen time! On our floor happened to be a private onsen, but we opted for the public gender-separate baths. The women's at night had an outdoor bath. Beautiful night air. In the morning, the onsens were switched, so we enjoyed the other set of baths. The shower room was very comfortable.
We missed the bus from Matsumoto Castle because of a misunderstanding of exits, so we took a taxi which cost around 1600 yen. In the morning, the bus stop back to Matsumoto was right outside the door, and someone from the ryokan waited with us.
- Grace (10/5): I recommend this ryokan to any traveler through the Matsumoto area! - Everything! This place was an excellent tucked-away gem in a beautiful, small onsen town in the Chubu region. Highly recommend for any traveler or tourist. I have no notes. The entire facility was beautiful, the hot springs were luxurious, and the food was authentic. The best part overall was the attentive and warm staff.
- Elaine (6/5): - The staff were very nice, and the use of google translate helped bridge language barriers. It is 10min from Matsumoto driving. Regarding value for money , it was average given the facilities are also fairly dated. I am comparing to other stays at similar guesthouses .
- Ann (8/5): Value for money - Staff were very helpful. Also appreciated that the toilet bowl was separated from the sink and shower area, made it easier to share a room. The food was decent - not amazing, but given the price it was really value for money. Some areas were a bit dusty (like the heater).
- Takiko (8/5): Very good - staff are so friendly very nice bath
- Suzanne (10/5): Perfect day at a traditional Japanese Ryokan - We really enjoyed the dinner and breakfast.
It was so nice to have someone help us with parking our car. The service during our meals was excellent! We wished there was Wifi
- Pranote (6/5): Pleasant -
- Widyaiswari (9/5): Superb -
- Naoko (8/5): Very good - Very clean, staff are very polite, they consider covid 19 hygiene and good hot spring.
- KenichiT (10/5): - Very convenient location for hot spring and star gazing
- Ronald (10/5): - Nice Japanese style inn with two amazing meals a day. Hot spring in the hotel is very nice.
