Guest Reviews
- David (2/5): - Dirty noise snooker club with rooms above
- Ricky (2/5): - An absolute shocker of a place! Didn’t stay.
This is, quite frankly, the worst “hotel”, I have ever had the misfortune of stepping into.
The lady who booked me in was lovely! Very friendly and polite.
That was the only good thing. Apart from her, in my opinion, the place is the worst hotel I have ever stepped into.
The place is in, what looks like, the extension of a local social club (think Phoenix nights without the funny side!). First impressions were bad! It smelled dreadful, was dirty, apart from the lady booking me in, the staffing was not exactly “hospitable”. I was out within an hour and will never return.
If you are considering the place, maybe have a rethink. It’s grim!
As I stepped into the “hotel”, section there was a distinct musty smell. Really dated!
I got to my room, the mirror smashed, brown stain on the blinds and the laminated flyers had stuck to them, what I presume to be, old food waste.
I asked to check out where the lad, who appeared to be the supervisor, insisted that I view another room or have my current room cleaned.
He offered a drink whilst this happened but I had a distinct lack in confidence surrounding the hygiene of the place, so declined.
The second room was slightly better but still dirty with some sort of, what appeared to be, black mould around the windows.
I left without staying.
The guy running the place said that he wasn’t allowed to give refunds and it would be down to head office. He gave me their details but no email addres
- Verified traveler (4/5): you get what you pay for! - Stayed for one night and the phrase “you get what you pay for” really does sum it up well.
Was a last minute booking as needed a nearby room and at £40 for the night thought I couldn’t go wrong.
The bed, well could feel every single spring finally get to sleep and woken up at 6.30am by banging of multiple other room doors.
- Jessica (8/5): - Really cheap. The room was clean and smelt clean but there was damp in it.
The area is really noisly with a motorbike driving around until around 2am. Guest were also noisy in the rooms next to me at both sides which isnt really the hotels fault but they were up until 3am so not the best nights sleep.
- Jeanette (2/5): - It was dirty we had paid for two nights but checked out on the Saturday afternoon wasn't going to stay on the Saturday night spoke to the manager who said that he'd look into it he apologised but offered no refund also no remote control for the television we asked a member of staff on Friday evening just said it was in the room but it wasn't and didn't seem interested in trying to help.
- Richard (2/5): Worst hotel in UK, period!!!! - The club had a DJ on all evening with music being played so loud that the window and bedroom walls were constantly vibrating. This continued till 12:30 am. Carpets were dirty and had a dreadful smell. The half used toilet roll provided had clearly been wet at some point as a water stain was clearly visible. Room had no bin. Bathroom had cobwebs and large spiders. No light shade. Had to sleep on top of my own towels as feared for my health using bedding provided. Hotels.com should ban this hotel from their site as it does your reputation no good. I would have felt safer and more comfortable sleeping on a park bench.
- Karen (6/5): Basic but adequate for one night - Needs some maintenance done but quiet location and good breakfast. Ok for a single night stopover
- Tony (2/5): - The staff are very friendly and helpful.
The food was nice and good value.
However , the room was extremely dated. The outside of the windows were filthy. The bed was shocking , you could feel every spring. A work colleague slept in a different room and could not sleep for the same reason.
Homelestky , avoid this place at all costs.
- JIM (8/5): Great Staff Friendy Place - Staff awesome, rooms basic but cheap and did the job, its low budget so not the Grand, Staff we spot on no drama there.
- Leona (8/5): Overall a good one night stay - For a quick overnight stay this place was more than adequate, we were in town to see a show. There were some minor issues such as the only mirror in the main room was broken, the window which led onto a small roofed area did not lock (I forgot to report this ), no mirror in the bathroom or hanging rail for towels, bedside table drawers broken. Also, the beds could have been firmer but I know some people like mattresses you really sink into. It was pretty clean but maybe a little rundown. Quieter at night than I expected but we did get in very late. Parked in their car park but it's not very big so I don't think guests will always get a Space. Took a while to find a member of staff to hand the keys back to at checkout. Overall a good experience for somewhere to lay your head.
- Catalina (10/5): - Got what we paid for, can't complain and staff were nice.
- Alex (4/5): - Outdated, not clean, damp, black mould in bathroom and uncomfortable beds.
- Paul (10/5): - Plain and simple check in , staff spot on
- Jayne (6/5): Overnight stay - Room rather shabby very dim lighting & overall quite chilly,ok for the price we paid but doubt would retain
- Benjamin (6/5): - Reasonable for the price, but the shower had black mould and we were given conflicting information about breakfast availablity. You get what you pay for.
- Eram (4/5): - The smell from the beds the very old sunken mattresses. The mould in the shower. The bathroom floor wet. And like no fresh air had ever been in that room
- Sarah (4/5): - Could do with refurbishment and the beds were uncomfortable, but you get what you pay for and it was very reasonable
- Denise (6/5): - The staff were lovely. But the room was dirty stained mattress, dead moth in draw, dirt behind the bed
- Lee (2/5): Be prepared!!!! - Check-in was a bit strange. Even after I paid previously via hotels.com they insisted I had not paid and proceeded to take the money from a card they said they had in there system. The card was not mine so I don't know who's card has been used to take the amount of £40.80 because out room was £44.16 both strange unusual amounts.
We was given the key and directions to our room and off we went. On entering the room we noticed the old musty smell immediately, the first thing we did was open the windows to let some air in and spray perfume around the room.
Looking around the room it was unkept and dirty, definitely in need of a refurb and a cleaner would have been nice.
The bathroom was mouldy and window sills was dirty with cob webs all over the room in corners, on doors and on picture frames etc.
There was holes in the wall , the headboard was hanging off the wall with holes on one side. The bed was like lying on metal springs directly, it was uncomfortable felt like it was only 10cm deep.
The noise from the neighbours started at around 3.30am. shouting loudly all around the building, outside the room and down the hallway. It continued for around an hour and was several people.
- Lisa (6/5): - Basic but friendly staff, not a place to stop for a holiday but great if you want a overnight stay
- Philip (10/5): - No problems apart from no teaspoon. Does what it says on the tin.
- Tintu (2/5): - Staff was not friendly.
- Philip (8/5): Avenue Lodge. - Nice warm room, clean and tidy. The TV remote was missing but quickly replaced. The only issue was that the shower overflowed flooding the bathroom floor. Altogether a decent, convenient stay.
- Paul (8/5): - Nice clean affordable
- Hassan (2/5): Bad management poor service racist manager - Manager was rude and racist got late for check in and they didn’t let me in the property as they said reception service is closed won’t recommend this to anyone requested for refund but manager refused and started shouting and he even asked Wht nationality are you as voice recording will be available
- Paul (8/5): - Its basic accomodation, but it has everything a fancy hotrl would have - good food, nice bar, snooker tables - the room was clean and warm, and the sheets were crisp clean linen. TV tea/coffee facilities as standard, and nice people. Absolutely nothing negative to say about it.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Does what it says on the tin!!! No luxuries, bit damp, kettle broke but did replace immediately, not very warm even though radiator was red hot, door handle hanging off, toilet roll holder hanging off wall!! But it was close to where we needed to be and value for money for what you got!!
- Maggie (4/5): - It’s important to say right from the beginning that the staff (and the other clients) were all great. They were helpful and friendly and pleasant. However the owner needs to spend some money on the hotel. Everything has been done on the cheap and there were things like mirrors that you couldn’t see into if you sat down, mattresses which were not very comfortable, things looked grubby (even though they were clean) because everything was old and needed a bit of TLC. Again, we had no criticism at all of the staff.
- Philip (10/5): - Seamless stay, easy check in, good room with everything you need. No problems at all.
- Robert (10/5): A gem in a great location - Very good to excellent, comfortable room with AC, good soundproofing loved the complimentary glass of wine between 5-7pm.
They have an odd relationship with the cafe right next door as you only book a full breakfast for about £20 but you can just go next door and pick anything from their full menu.
Overall very good would stay again
- Philip (8/5): - Great for a couple of nights.
- Philip (10/5): - Good for my one night stay. No issues.
- Thomas (8/5): Great staff and great value for money - Friendly helpful staff. Food was good and sensibly priced, rooms were a bit tired, but pretty comfortable. Overall it was great value for money. As long as you're not expecting the ritz, its a good place to stay.
- Nicola (8/5): - Lovely staff
- Shelley (6/5): Poor hotel - She shower room was very small and it had a large amount of mould in it. The room was very noisy and was quite small. The bed was very uncomfortable
- Amatta (10/5): - Everything was good
- Wendy (2/5): - Nothing was good about it unless you like football and beer!
Dirty! Not maintained in the rooms and Not the place for peace and quiet either!
- Nina (6/5): - I liked the rooms and how there was a convenience store just opposite the property, I enjoyed my stay but when I checked in I was given my key and I had really heavy luggage’s with me and not one person decided to help me move it up stairs I’m not saying it’s a must but it would have been nice.
- Tony (4/5): Room in very poor state. - The room was basic, cleanliness was not a priority as thick cobwebs everywhere. No pillow protectors on the pillows, quilt covered ripped and was to big for the quilt. There were holes in the walls in the bathroom as well as behind the bed, with wall paper ripped away in places. There was mould in the shower on the base tray, as well as the ceiling covered in mould, shower was leaking behind the wall into the room. Main door to the room the outside door handle coming off.
- Philip (10/5): Avenue Lodge - Best nights sleep for a while. Everything was good, the only little niggle was no spoon for the coffee. Breakfast was value for money.
- TANVIR (6/5): - .
- Philip (10/5): - No issues, good nights sleep. Everything I needed was there
- Kate (6/5): Ok stay - Nice staff, bed uncomfy and shower was mouldy. Great bar.
- Gwen (6/5): Edgbaston a safe and simple walk away - Clean room and r towels and nice touch of little sweets in room… however, only one mug in a double room? And a tv but could not find any TV controls !!
- Joel (8/5): - Quiet and Safe.
- Elaine (8/5): - We were made to feel welcome when we arrived. The room was nice enough for what me and my daughter needed between uni house moves. Breakfast was lovely and cook to order. Thank you guys
- Sylvia (8/5): - Overall stay was ok. My only issue was i paid for late checkout because we wanted to sleep in,but house keeping knocked on the door to wake us up. It will be a good idea if they know who is checking out late so not to disturb them. Thanks
- Karl (10/5): Avenue club and lodge - Very reasonably price .great staff. Welcome atmosphere
- MARCUS (6/5): OK but could be better - Room could have been better designed, but did the trick for just two nights. I'm not sure that I'd be that enthusiastic to spend another night here though.
- Neil (10/5): - It was ok, clean, friendly. Although the Kettle wasn’t good it was rusty inside.
- Elli (4/5): - Contacted the manager to discuss our stay but no reply. Staff at reception very pleasant but no hot water in the shower, property very run down and not the 3* £63 room we paid for
- David (8/5): - Stay was absolutely fine however an extremely selfish group of people were chatting fir what seemed all night. I know this isn’t the properties fault but it ruined the stay.
- Michelle (8/5): Friendly staff - Staff are great , very helpful & friendly.
Great pub on site for a drink . Good breakfast made to order .
Need bed side lamps and better ventilation to stop damp smell .
Also a mattress topper .
- Christine (6/5): - There room was pleasant enough. Clean and tidy. Felt old and dated. Mattress was thin and cheap. You could feel the springs. Pillows were thin but I always travel with my own so not really an issue for me. Definitely, not worth the £55.00 I paid. Hubby said he wouldn't pay more than £30. Thankfully we only stayed to sleep so was there less than 12 hours. Would NOT go again. Staff were lovely and friendly though.
- puneesh (2/5): - the property is next to cementery, with a very limited bus co nectivity. the property looks like really old and need refurbishing, toilets arent good, the rooms have damps and smelly.
- Samantha (10/5): - Staff were very friendly. Food both afternoon and morning were excellent and value for money.Had a game of bingo in the evening which was enjoyable and made to feel welcome amongst all the people involved, bar staff went above & beyond to help, will definately come back and stay again and would recommend to others
- Judith (10/5): Helpful, welcoming staff and convenient location - We found the staff really helpful friendly and accommodating. We were having a family crisis situation and we couldn’t fault them , helping us with local info, going the extra mile all the time. We are due back to stay as family crisis still ongoing.
- Aidan (10/5): Good find - Good value and very handy for where I was working
- Clifton (4/5): - The bed was terrible
- Hiu Leung (4/5): - No hot water in the morning
- Jose (6/5): General Review - Location is good, bus stop opposite the hotel alone with 2 x local shops, free parking onsite, no hot water in the shower, the water was pretty cold me and my wife had to shower with cold water, toilet roll holder hanging out the wall. The hotel needs troughout painting (hotel room doors specially) breakfast was OK.
- daniel (8/5): - Very quiet considering its next to a pub/bar,heater allowed the room to be comfortably warm,it's near a bus stop that the bus takes you into central Birmingham
- Rebecca (4/5): - Nothing like the pictures on hotels.com, the bathroom had mould round the shower and the mattress was high at one end and was on a slope
- KAREN (10/5): Very quiet excellent breakfast - Stay was good very quiet . Breakfast was amazing . Will have evening meal next time we stay have ready booked again
- Christina (6/5): - Very basic & hygiene standards poor, furniture, fixtures & fittings cheap & nasty, stained & things broken.
Do not be fooled, this is not a lodge, its a working mens club with rooms.
We should have realised that it wasn't going to be as good as we had expected because of the price. We would not stay again.
- Keith (10/5): - A great cost-effective place to stay. I was worried that accommation associated with a bar would be noisy, but even going to bed early I found it very quiet. Great shower; great (generous) breakfast options.
- Hany (8/5): - Nice and good location
- K (4/5): - Dead spiders in the room
- Lorna (6/5): - Parking not guaranteed, may have to park on the road. Room and shower a little tired needs updating. Breakfast good value although service was slow.
- Jan (10/5): - This is a brilliant budget offer. Room was clean and totally functional and the shower was excellent.
Food is great value and cooked to order.
The locals in the social club were welcoming and inlusive, gnerating a lovely (if lively) atmosphere in the evening! Above all, the staff were friendly and always extremely helpful.
This is a real value for money offer.
- daniel (8/5): - Good clean room..no fuss booking..very quiet even though it's next to pub
- Nicola (4/5): Not great - Staff nice. Room clean enough. Very cheap, but definitely not a 3 star accommodation. Restaurant not open on a Saturday for some reason, which we didn’t find out until we went downstairs to eat. We solved this by ordering an Uber in. Staff member bought us some plates to our room which was helpful. It is a social club and does hold functions, which may be why the restaurant was closed. The music was very loud until 11.30pm, but it was so loud it sounded like it was in our bathroom and I could hear conversations that’s were happening downstairs. It wasn’t even good music that I could enjoy. The sink was cracked, Window locks were broken with a flat roof outside. I wouldn’t stay again, I will book a hotel. Shame because it’s in the area we needed to be in.
- Kevin (2/5): Avoid this hotel - The room was not fit to be used. The door handle was loose, the roller blind had been pulled down and left on the floor, the wall heater was coming away from the wall, the smoke alarm was hanging loose from the ceiling and the shower spray holder was hanging off of the wall. The bathroom window would not close and the hotel front door was wide open when I returned allowing access for anyone to the room area without having to pass by a reception desk. Consequently it felt very unsecure. The room overlooked a pile of waste and flytipping.
The place is terrible.
- David (10/5): Great spot for good value accommodation - Loved everyone at this place and the accommodation. Very helpful. I left some stuff behind as I’d had a few drinks on my last night and the staff went out of there way to be helpful. I would highly recommend the Avenue Lodge to anyone.
- Erin (2/5): Really bad - Cold, damp, dark, mould everywhere in the shower, mould on the ceiling and window really disappointing holes in doors and walls. Woken up at 1145pm with someone emptying the bottles in the bin from the bar. No one to talk to when checking out to tell my concerns
- Verified traveler (2/5): Don’t go to this place!!! - Terrible service! Lied and said on the site there would be food when there wasn’t, we only got half of money back which was ridiculous!
Stole mine and my partners belonging - I lost a charger and my partner lost £50 worth of aftershave set
- Jose (8/5): - The place is in a good location, the staff very nice and friendly, the infrastructure is good but the bathrooms cleaning is not that great, carpet inside the room is very dirty and the room has very bad smells.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - There was stains on the side of the single bed, dont know what it is.
Also no spoon in the mug to stir to make a hot drink
Shower wouldn't turn off properly, the water was jus dripping from the head and sounded like the shower was fully on.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Value for money - Decent place, clean and quiet, old building, amenities nearby, cheapest place in Bham
- Verified traveler (8/5): Ok, but could be easily improved. - It was clean and comfortable. However, our room had a cracked mirror, a stained blind, the toilet roll holder was broken and there was no towel rail.
A very small investment could have corrected all of these and given a much better impression.
This venue is above a working mens club and is quite noisy. Whilst this didn't particularly bother us as we don't go to bed early, it could be a problem for others.
- M (6/5): not suitable for children ,but keen price - short break with my autistic grandson and daughter to visit Cadbury World. While the Lodge was quite easy to find and had parking, feel it wasn't for family's, as there was quite a lot of noise, loud talking when other guest where going to bed. not paying attention to others who might be trying to sleep, or get to sleep. Would be suitable for adults or people who travel for work. that's at the time we were there. Oct half term..
