- Oumama (8/5): -
- morgese (10/5): Beautiful place in a peaceful surrounding - The property was very well appointed with many private spa rooms to use as well as other amenities the surrounding area was lush and peaceful the food was very delicious and the staff were all very helpful and friendly There was nothing to not like
- Dirk (9/5): -
- Hawawark (10/5): -
- Cristiano (10/5): Perfect stay for 1-2 nights for relaxing - Very relaxing stay at the Onsen Ryokan. They provide 6 private Onsen for hotel guests and the public ones. We used three of the private Onsen and were very happy. The dinner was typical and of very high qualitiy, even though some of the local foods are uncommon for the european taste (which does not mean that they did not taste well).
- Eduardo (10/5): A fantastic stay with a super premium service level - to repeat again! - Exceptional room and dedicated service. It felt like having a host full time dedicated to us. Food was amazing and we enjoyed the family private baths so much
- Martin (9/5): -
- Chui Hong (10/5): - Everything was fantastic. Staff were friendly and lovely, 6 private onsens, excellent yummy food and cute resident doggies! Enjoyed the stay so much.
- Guest (10/5): -
- Marcel (10/5): - Six private onsen, so there was always at least one free to use.
Nice view from the bath onto the river.
- Catherine (10/5): Definitely a fantastic place to stay. Will come back for sure! - The location is excellent as the ryokan is located at a quiet and peaceful side of the village and yet it’s close to the train station and also the bus terminal. The staff are very friendly and make me feel so welcoming. The food is so delicious. Also, there is private onsen available for booking on first come first serve basis. There is nothing that I don’t like about this property. I only wish that I have stayed longer.
- Sea2Sea (10/5): Perfection - Yamabiko is exceptional. It offers a beautiful blend of tradition and modernity, with delicious and surprisingly large meals; two large baths that are open to onsen-hoppers; and 6 private baths that are available only to guests. The rooms are large and beautiful and the beds and bedding are high quality. We never had to wait to luxuriate and the staff was just lovely.
Kurokawa Onsen offers so many choices and it's hard to know where to go. With the onsen-hopping pass we were able to experience three other onsens. We chose very highly regarded onsens, and two were filthy. The third, Konoyu, was lovely but up a steep hill away from the river and shops. We feel so lucky that we chose Yamabiko. I thought it was expensive until I went there, and now I think it's very fairly priced. They have a shy, sweet resident Leonberger dog, but they could use a couple of cats for the cat lovers.
- Marie (9/5): Pleasant onsen ryokan experience - Comfortable room with a nice river-facing view. Tap water's drinkable. Sufficiently staffed with English-speaking staff. Friendly, hospitable service throughout—from the front desk to the restaurant. Onsen was well-maintained and clean; I loved the open-air bath and the wide variety of private baths, which weren't always booked out. Located at a corner of the Kurokawa Onsen village, but not too far to walk to the main street where the shops and river-viewing spots are. Really enjoyed our peaceful stay. Nothing, really. The place was all good, and we really enjoyed our stay. The price could be a bit steep, but for the level of care, it's worth it. E.g. of level of care: We drove and parked our rented car in their parking lot for the 2 nights we stayed there, and on the 3rd day, when we left, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that they had helped clear the snow, all ready for us to drive out. Amazing attention to detail.
- Hooy (8/5): It was a relaxing stay. The outdoor onsen water temperature was hot enough to meet my expectation. - Private dinning area. No shower facility in the room.
- Hung Ming (10/5):
- Ian (10/5): - Damn it felt good, even though i was a bit tired after my previous nights at fukuoka, yamabiko was the perfect place to rest in kurokawa onsen. Very kind staff too, especially at the restaurant.
Overall, even my room was better than expected. Well a small miscommunication for when to clean, nothing too bad really.
- Malachi (9/5): Gorgeous and comfortable stay, a perfect cap to an amazing trip. - We took the meals, and we were so glad we did; they were not only delicious, but offered unique local cuisine that we would normally not have had the opportunity to try. The staff were incredibly friendly, gracious, and welcoming.
- XuFei (9/5): -
- Valerie (6/5): - Private onsen and staff are very friendly. It is next to a steam. Very relax environment The property is quite old.
- Pek Hoong (10/5): -
- Acharai (10/5): - The best place i stay on this trip. Offer private onzen with 6 difference style. Super nice outdoor onsen which you must not miss to try on. Offer private dinner and BF. Very helpful staff. Non

- Siriporn (10/5): - I like Yamabiko Ryokan very much. Even the price is quite expensive but we can get all best things from this accommodation. The room is very nice and good view by the river. There is toilet inside the room too! We can enjoy all 6 private onsens which is free of charge. And the public outdoor onsen is very nice too! I tried all of it ha..ha.. :) The staff is very good service. They take care all of us since we checked in until checking out. Dinner and breakfast are served in private room too! I recommend this place a lot ! no.
- ARYUNG (10/5): -
- Kevin (10/5): Relaxing and recharging - EVERYTHING.
The staff are AMAZING. They gave us the full white-glove treatment and were very attentive. It's the small things like hand written notes and the custom name sign they made for us that go a long way.
The mixed wood/tatami mat style room felt very comfortable. They provided a lot of snacks, soups, water, tea, etc that is part of our stay. The tap water is even safe to drink!
Private onsens were great. They were even connected to the TV so you could tell if they were full or empty from your room. Each had a view of the outdoors and were super serene.
Public onsens looked great. We always opted for the private onsens, but the public ones looked great too.
The kei-seke (pardon spelling) was delicious. They gave so many high quality dishes and were portioned well. I am a heavy eater and I left satisfied. The bidet was not working, but very minor issue.
- Nogami (9/5): -
- Littre (10/5): - Tous N'avoir resté qu'une nuit
- CHE JUI (9/5): -
- yamei (9/5): -
- Casper (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ju (10/5): Exceptional - Yamabiko Ryokan is genuinely one of the very best i've been to. They have many in-house private onsen which is lockable) to give more privacy which is a bonus. Their public onsen is just amazingly relaxing and scenic.
To top it off, both lunch & dinner are absolutely delicious with impeccable service.
Truly a memorable and unforgettable experience, as an ryokan should be.
- Marcus (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful property in a great location. Very friendly and helpful staff, amazing food. The onsens are wonderful!
- Yin Ping (10/5): - This hotel is amazing, they provide indoor and outdoor hot spring. Their staff manner is very good, and the foods are so delicious.
- Samantha (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful location with the sounds of the river in the background. I have multiple tattoos and was able to use any of the 6 private onsens without issue.
- Joshua (10/5): - A perfect experience, great food and a wonderful Ryokan. Highly recomend
- Chanchanit (10/5): Good stay - Variety of onsen + the location, very quiet. Toilet in the room has unpleasant smells,
Not that it was not clean but may be more to do with the system where the smell flew back through the toilet.
- Takeshi (10/5): - Loved the availability of different public/private onsen options. A memorable stay.
- Tsz Hong (10/5): Good place - The hotel has around 8 onsens for you to choose from. Mean whiles, it would be a quiet place to live.
- Kory (10/5): Exceptional - Everyone there was amazing! Helpful, kind, and informative. For example, they booked a bus for us to get to our next accommodations in kyushu! Rooms were amazing, and baths were top tier. I will be returning in the near future!😊
- Denis (8/5): Very good - Location, facilities, room size, food Nothing
- Qian (10/5): would absolutely come again. great value for price. children allowed. - Wonderful personalized service (reception, choosing of yukata size according to height).
easy overview of private onsen rooms occupancy via TV screen.
the room was so huge and had a great view of the stream.
great meals as well.
the onsen rooms were wonderful as well. top tier. nothing
- Daniel (10/5): Perfect onsen ryokan stay in Kurokawa onsen. - This ryokan is exceptional. From the decor to the facilities to the friendliness of the general staff we felt welcomed and relaxed throughout. We had planned to visit other onsen ryokan on our visit to Kurokawa but quickly realised that we didn’t need to - it was all right here. There are 6 private unique baths on top of the excellent rotenburo (men’s and women’s outdoor pools separate but alternate each day) and with our limited time in Kurokawa (one night only) we were able to make use of 4 of the private baths and both of the rotenburo (one on each of the days). A great feature was the no booking system for the private baths - it was first come first serve but there were lights that showed you which was occupied. Even better, there was a screen on the tv in your room which told you which were occupied so you could plan which one to go to before you headed down. There was also public indoor baths but we didn’t have time to utilise these. Our kids (ages 11 and 15) enjoy the table tennis and the massage chairs as well as the baths. The views over the river from our room were beautiful especially at night with the illuminations in the river downstream from the bridge easily visible. We really enjoyed the food though some of the selections were a bit too challenging for the kids. Surprisingly though they both enjoyed the horse-meat sashimi! Front of house staff are a little bit gruff at times. Also, while there were plenty of instructions and labels in English the staff didn’t really speak much English. Not a problem for us as we have passable Japanese for these situations.
- Fred (10/5): - Good
- 1weltgeist2018 (6/5): Both pros and cons - The hotel is centrally located in the Kurokawa Onsen village. The facilities and rooms were spacious, big enough to accommodate a family of three. The baths were well-divided into a main bath (daiyokujo), an outdoor bath (rotenburo), and six private baths (kashikiriburo). A particularly convenient feature was that the private baths operated on a first-come, first-served basis, eliminating the need for reservations.
We appreciated that both dinner and breakfast were served in a private dining space allocated to each room. The food was typical ryokan cuisine, which we found satisfactory. Additionally, the staff were helpful and accommodating. I made the reservation through Booking.com, assuming that both dinner and breakfast were included, as is customary in traditional ryokan accommodations at the quoted price. On comparable Japanese booking websites, both meals were included at a similar price. However, the Booking.com website was unclear on this point. Based on other travelers' comments regarding dinner and breakfast, I assumed they were included.
After making the reservation—more than one month before my travel date—the ryokan contacted us to inform us that we would need to pay an additional 8,800 yen per person if we wanted dinner. With this extra fee, the total cost exceeded the prices available on Japanese booking websites including their own. I contacted the ryokan to request a cancellation, but they refused, citing their policy that only allows cancellations in cases of natural disasters. The exchanges I had with the ryokan during this process were not pleasant; the tone of their communication was very direct, almost to the point of sounding disrespectful. Consequently, we had no choice but to pay the additional fee.
Another minor issue was that most ryokans I’ve stayed at before would clear away the futons while guests were having breakfast. Unfortunately, this was not done here.
- Brenden (10/5): Exceptional - The room was incredible and the staff was wonderful. The variety of private baths available was the best of all the ryokans in the whole village, and the status screen in the room made it easy to determine when one was available. It was a wonderful experience that was worth the price. If you have a shoe size larger than about a US men’s 10-11, I would strongly recommend bringing your own sandals while going on the onsen tour or going to the meals in the other building. I wear size 13s and the largest size they had was way too small and made walking difficult.
- Lae (8/5): Good stay, great food, nice and private bath facilities. But no bath in room. - Food was great. Private family baths were a great option for shy first timers. The bath availability can also be easily seen on room tv. Service was okay. I did not realise the room had no bath, just a toilet and wash basin. So you are forced to use the public or reserved family baths outside of your room. Its a personal preference of mine to want a bath in my room.
- Daniel (10/5): Amazing hotel, amazing area. - A beautiful place to stay in beautiful surroundings. Hiroki-san took great care of us from the beginning, explaining everything and serving our meals. He was very kind, patient with my attempts at speaking Japanese, and welcoming.
The riverside room had an amazing view in the autumn. There were so many onsen to choose from, shared outdoor ones and six private ones, easily accessed. Extremely relaxing.
The food was kaiseki style - many, many dishes. Absolutely delicious dinner and breakfast.
The Kurokawa Onsen area is full of charm. We particularly enjoyed a local shop run by a man who makes pottery. He explained how they make the white glaze from a local plant.
There are more onsen that you could possibly visit, but other than Yamabiko, I highly recommend the cave onsen at Shinmeikan and the beautiful outdoor one at Ikoi Ryokan (bear in mind I’ve only seen the men’s sections).
- Vincent (10/5): Will be back. - Location, private onsen the design of Ryokan, service with a smile and helpful staff. Nothing comes to mind.
- Elzbieta (8/5): Pleasant but expensive. - Location and views from our room were stunning. Breakfast in a private room with tea prepared was a nice touch. Loved the onsen which you could use in private (there were also communal same sex onsens too). Ery friendly staff. Room was nice but furnishing somewhat worn out in places.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Koh Sing (10/5): - Very good private onsens
- Thamchesada (8/5): This ryokan give you a vibe of traditional one. One of the nice ryokan in Japan. - Everything is good. The atmosphere is superb. The food is nice. Many unique private onsen. One male Japanese staff is very friendly and helpful but another male staff who looks like a foreigner, was gossiping us which is unacceptable.
- Borvornwut (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (10/5): - Fantastic place. Staff were wonderful, hotel was clean and quiet. Food was great. A wonderful stay!
- Davide (9/5): Superb - The building location is perfect for a quick walk to either the railway station or the main city shopping area and arcades. Flat is clean, functional and with all the appliance required for a short/medium stay. There should be a direct support line with a property manager, in case a support or a clarification is required.
- Yiu Tak (10/5): -
- JasonRicy (10/5): - Good
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastinen ryokan. Erinomainen ruoka ja runsaasti onsen-vaihtoehtoja sis. kuusi perhe-onsenia. Erittäin ystävällinen palvelu.
- Mariana (10/5): Stunning hotel for a beautiful and authentic Japanese experience!! - This Ryokan is absolutely amazing, the facilities are very well maintained, you have the possibility of using different types of baths (private and public), the staff was great, the breakfast was delicious and attention to detail in every area. That is as westerns, didn’t have coffee available (except instant coffee)
- Boram (10/5): - good
- Ayed (10/5): - We had a wonderful stay. The atmosphere, food, staff, and hospitality are amazing. We loved the onsen available on site, but also managed to visit other onsen in town (you can get an onsen hopping pass from the town visitor center). Overall very tranquil and relaxing. One thing to note is that the pillows can be small and you may need to ask for larger or additional pillows. Highly recommend and would visit again.
- Ling Kit (10/5): 6 private baths with different themes - I've been to quite a number of onsen hotels. This one have 2 things impress me:
The room is big
6 private baths with different themes! plus 2 public baths, I just feel like i was in a water park onsen version
- Chi Chiu (6/5): - The changing area of private bath apparently was not being cleaned frequently enough so it was wet and with hairs all over the place.
