Guest Reviews
- Jan (8/5): gezellig typisch engels hotel en bar. - sfeer, het eten, de gezellige accomodatie, goede parkeerplaats voor de motoren. erg smalle bedden, niet meer van deze tijd.!
- David Lee (9/5): Very pleasant and tranquil stay - Location and surroundings, character of property and food was excellent. N/A
- Melanie (8/5): Realistically priced stay in a period building set in a beautiful location - The Horsehoe Hotel is a beautiful old building in an absolutely gorgeous location, right on the C2C path which was why we chose it.
It has a lovely grassed area in front of the hotel which would be very pleasant on a warm summers evening.
The new(ish) owner is very sweet and welcoming, as were all staff, and we had a really delicious evening meal. We were very pleased to have something other than the usual pub fare for yet another night. Breakfast was also delicious (although scrambled eggs were somewhat overcooked).
The price was reflective of the fact that the hotel still needs some refurbishment. Saying that, we had a comfortable and enjoyable stay, and refurbishment needs are in my opinion cosmetic. Unfortunately the weather was unseasonably cold when we visited in mid May and parts of the hotel were a bit chilly - the room heated up quickly with the radiator on full, but the large dining room struggled to get warm despite a lovely wood fire. An open fire in the bar area would have made it so more inviting, and might have even encouraged guests to stay downstairs and spend more on a drink.
Since acquiring the property the new owner has apparently concentrated on refurbishing the kitchen but now needs to turn her attention to the rooms as they remain dated. Some things could be readily improved at little cost (such as replacing the cracked sink, or buying a pendant lightshade in room 6!), or with a lick of paint. Other things are clearly going to take time and £££ - our room windows clearly need replacing.
- John (7/5): - Mooie locatie en vriendelijk personeel Eten duurde enorm lang, we moesten 1,5 uur wachten
- Stephen (7/5): Warm & welcoming staff in a hotel that looks stunning from the outside but requires some serious tlc - A really good dinner and breakfast and the hotel is in a great place for walkers doing the Esk Valley Way or the Coast to Coast. Nice and quiet at night and a good spacious room. Friendly staff. This place looks amazing from the outside but inside is quite a surprise as is somewhat rough and ready. The staff are pretty rushed off their feet and are looking to recruit more staff with immediate effect, but the place is in need of some serious tlc, or at least a week of painting and decorating (and maybe a trip to an auction house for some bargain old/historic furniture and paintings). Our room was possibly in the process of being repainted, as there was green frog tape still stuck around a portion of the ceiling and a few areas that had been filled and sanded but were yet to be painted. Which was interesting. The telly worked fine but was the size of a computer laptop screen, and I sadly didn't have my glasses with me.
However despite giving strong Fawlty Towers vibes the staff were warm and friendly and the food was excellent. And if you're just after a place to get a generous meal and to lay your head after a hard day of walking you'll be fine. Just maybe not the venue for a romantic weekend or anniversary break...

- Marja (8/5): -
- ralph (3/5): - Staff where excellent Hotel is in need of updating . Wall paper coming off walls and ceiling shower rail fell off while taking shower due to having 1 screw in
- Vivian (6/5): Ok, close to C2C track, accommodating - Close to the C2C trail, friendly and accommodating Bed too soft (personal preference) too a long time to get breakfast. Dinner was ok, not as good as other places
- Terra (9/5): Perfect stay while walking coast to coast. - Palmy was lovely. She was always upbeat and attentive. Tiny bar area.
- Anita (3/5): - The location was lovely. Tea and coffee facilities in room were good. Shower was great. The mattress on left side of bed was broken. The right side was fine. Hole in the wall where door handle had broken the plaster. Window frames were all rotten. No shelving in bathroom for toiletries.
- Harry (5/5): -
- Sandra (8/5): Freundlich, idyllisch, leckerer Burger - Sehr freundliche Gastgeber, gutes Abendessen, idyllischer Ausblick in den Garten. Wir fühlten uns sehr willkommen. Schlechter WLAN-Empfang auf dem Zimmer.
- Jean (8/5): - Nice friendly polite staff. Lovely location.
Characterful public areas and nice garden.
Beautiful old building.
Although the menu was quite limited the food was well cooked and tasty. The bedroom was disapointing, it was very small and the twin beds were a bit narrow and uncomfortable. The bathroom needed a full refurbishment. It didnt seem to be worth the price.
Having said that we were told it was in new hands and the owners were working to upgrade the premises, so we could have just been unlucky with the room.
Its a very large building so it will be a lot of work.
I wish them well as they have the service element sorted.
- carl (9/5): Excellent - Lovely staff fantastic breakfast and a superb location Nothing
- Normilad (7/5): Ideal for a stay on the Coast to Coast walk. - Friendly staff, landlady/owner is a gem. Nice and warm, hot shower, good beers, excellent full English breakfast. Ideal for our stay on the coast to coast walk.
- Brown (5/5): I wouldn’t stay there again. - A generous breakfast Resident areas very tired, paintwork chipped. A cramped room, no bedside light, bathroom mirror light not working, no chair. Very limited dinner menu because they were catering for a wedding.
- Mia (6/5): - It looks adorable from the outside. But it truly needs some thoughtful renovation on the inside. This may have been the oldest looking (and feeling) place of accommodation weve ec
Ver stayed in the UK.
It served our purposes. We just needed somewhere in the area to sleep for the night. The place has huge potential!
- Grunwell (1/5): Appalling - Location The rubbish hotel
- Susan (8/5): -
- Simon (10/5): A lovely pub - A beautiful old pub conveniently located on the coast-to-coast walking route. I stayed in a lovely old room. The staff were very hospitable, the grounds beautiful, and the food was delicious!
- Sean (9/5): Perfect - Perfect location good food welcoming atmosphere
- Tim (10/5): -
- Linda (10/5): Fab joists fab breakfast fab sausages - The area character Not anything
- Debbie (7/5): Comfortable stay in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors - Beautifully situated Inn in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors by the River Esk. On the Wainwrights Coast to Coast route. Close to Whitby and other coastal locations. Popular bar and restaurant. Lovely substantial breakfast. The Inn was very busy in all areas, accommodation, bar and restaurant, however due to a shortage of staff wait times for food were lengthy. Staff positions were being advertised so waiting times will improve when positions are filled.
- Maynard (10/5): A warm welcome and a comfortable room - We received a warm welcome and our two large dogs were very welcome too. The room we stayed in was perfect, very clean and had everything we needed for our one night stay.
Breakfast was delicious too! The mattress was a little soft but it wasn’t really a problem.
- Jeffreys (5/5): -
- John (9/5): - Dog friendly, great location, friendly staff, lovely food, good sized room and nice shower
- Kathryn (8/5): Very friendly staff and delicious food room was clean and comfortable - Old fashioned and quirky N/a
- Mark (3/5): Wouldn’t recommend - Nice location Everything worn out and tired, mould on bathroom sealant , tv didn’t work aerial wire twisted together in two places, paintwork atrocious , seats in dining area threadbare
- Paul (10/5): - Fantastic
- Maria (8/5): Great value for money - a lovely weekend stay - It was warm and comfortable and the staff were really friendly and helpful. The location was lovely with some great walks nearby. There was a long wait for dinner and the food was nice but not exceptional
- Andy (7/5): Needs attention - Nice location Heating and hot water was off
- Andrea (5/5): Food was nice although when we asked for the dessert menu (at 8.30pm) we were told the chef had gone home. Breakfast was - The host and her staff were all very friendly and welcoming. They didn’t know much about the local area so we had to wing it a bit and rely on Google Needs a lot of money spending on it, I appreciate the owner has only had it since May but it was tatty, dated and not of a good standard.
- Daniel (10/5): -
- Nathan (7/5): -
- Joseph (10/5): Our favourite stop off! - We had the best stay here and the most fun evening of our coast to coast walk. We lucked out by staying during an open mic, jam night which was awesome. The owner and locals were all really friendly and the amazing Ellie, Guy and Joe behind the bar were particularly awesome, so thank you!
The pub itself is gorgeous and in a great location. Our room was comfortable, the beer was nicely kept and the breakfast was spot on. We would love to return one day and can't recommend this place highly enough. The hungover walk the next day
- Anthony (4/5): Needs renovation. - Staff were friendly. We arrived on a rainy day. The room was cold and there didn't seem to be any heating on. An electric heater was provided. The window leaked and water dripped in constantly throughout the night.
The food was not good. Fish and chips looked like something you would have bought frozen from a supermarket, not the battered fish others have shown pictures of. My wife asked for mashed potato with her dish, but they couldn't provide this despite some main courses coming with mash.
- Tom (8/5): -
- Amanda (6/5): -
- Jonathan (7/5): Overall good but hotel need refreshing which the owners are in the process of doing - Excellent food, very nice and friendly people Lack of a Blind at the bathroom window.
- J (8/5): Great stay for C2C! - Food was great! Excellent breakfast. New management is doing great! Verry welcome for us walking Coast 2 Coast. Bar was under construction, but for high season it will be fabulous.
- Julia (7/5): Enjoyable .. service , food and drinks were of an excellent quality .. - Breakfast …. Good quality food … pleasant service … very attentive Building was beautiful but in need of repair and decoration
- Laura (8/5): -
- Paul (6/5): - Staff very welcoming
Food drink
Location
Value for money Rooms and decor are tired requiring renovation
- Porritt (3/5): Very disappointing. - Log fire in the bar and a good evening meal The heating wasn’t on however an electric heater was provided but was inadequate . Bare light bulb on ceiling and curtain partially hanging off the rail.
Breakfast booked for 8am however no staff in attendance. Eventually someone arrived. A full English breakfast was offered but I was told that there was no bacon and no mushrooms so instead I ordered Smoked Salmon and Scrambled eggs. When it was served the eggs had been cooked with onions! This made it uneatable. I could only eat three small slices of gluten free toast. When I came to leave there was no staff despite my calling for assistance. I had to unbolt the front door to let myself out!
- Paul (7/5): -
- Lynn (10/5): -
- james (10/5): Lovely location and really nice staff. - The staff were excellent. Sarah was so welcoming, asking my opinion on the freshly laid natural Christmas decorations - they looks lovely, you could tell she was artistic type. The fire was raging all evening tendered by the chef and bar man religiously. Then in the morning, the breakfast was "chefs kiss" perfect. It's not a luxury resort it's a down to earth, get stuck in place, which I think is ideal.
- Gavin (8/5): -
- Jo (8/5): Great location - Great location. Friendly, helpful staff. Rooms were very tired, needs a bit of an upgrade.
- Christine (7/5): 1 night stay on road trip - Lovely meal in evening. We were there for curry night Needs a refurb or a repaint at the very least. Shame as lovely location and atmospheric.
- Applegarth (10/5): - Very friendly staff clean rooms lovely big bath towels good shower. We had dinner good excellent.
- Geoffrey (4/5): Overpriced and very tired property at the moment...... - Beautiful location The Horseshoe Hotel is misnomer. it being a pub with rooms and nowhere near a hotel offering. The new owners have a massive task on their hands to bring this lovely old pub up to today's standards. The room was cramped, dirty and very tired. Once a full refurbishment has happened this pub will have great potential given its location and character. Until then charging full rates left us very disappointed
- Mark (8/5): Stayed with 2 friends on a walking holiday. The place is owned by a lovely couple, Puminda and Russ - Excellent quality, good portions
- Pamela (10/5): Perfect - Friendly Nothing
- Stephen (5/5): - The hotel is set in a lovely location The amenities of the hotel were quite poor for example, the kettle did not work in the room and had been reported. The shower ran lukewarm at best. The TV was tiny and the rooms were up a number of stairs which would make it difficult for anyone with a mobility disability.
- Samantha (10/5): - The location, this b&b is so picturesque, with a pretty stream and stepping stones at the side, food and service was excellent Nothing, We would return, this is under new management who are in the process of updating the rooms
- Tanya (10/5): Had a wonderful stay for one night with my husband and father-in-law, Pommy and her staff went out of their way to make - Beautiful hotel in stunning settings. Really cozy uncomfortable. Nothing
- Yvonne (4/5): Disappointed with our room and felt we did not get what we had expected - Food was exceptional Room not to the standard we expected grubby in places the main problem was no running hot water unable to shower or take a bath the hotel appears to need some attention to detail in places
- Clarkson (3/5): Chaos when I arrived, the room not up to expectations as portrayed in photographs and editorial. - Apart from the location, I liked nothing Most things.
- Jane (7/5): We had a great time in this dog friendly welcoming pub. - The location is lovely. The staff are friendly and the food was great. The bar was full of friendly locals who gave us some great tips of places to go. Great place to take a camper van too as they offer hook up. They are renovating the property and it does need some TLC, that said the bed was clean and comfortable.
- Stella (10/5): -
- Jaq (8/5): - Character, staff and good food. Nothing
- Friday (10/5): Gem of a place located on the Coast to Coast route - Beautiful location on the coast to coast path. Lovely landlady and landlord. Gave me a tour of their kitchen amd introduced me to their chef. They went out of their way to provide vegan breakfast options. Breakfast was delicious and atmospheric as we took breakfast with an open fire in the breakfast room. I reported that a light was broken in our room and they responded immediately. On arrival we checked the dinner menu and their were no vegan options I think the bar staff could have done more to persuade us to stay at the hotel for dinner but she did not offfer any alternatives she only said that the chef had jusy left. It was a missed opportunity and we went elsewhere for dinner. In thw morning the landlady said they could have provided us with options so hopefully next time we can try them as the breakfast was delicious.
- Gray (8/5): -
- Andrew (9/5): -
- Frank (7/5): - Die Lage zum CTC Renovierung empfohlen
- Joel (6/5): Probably better options nearby for a stay. - Some of the best food we ate on the coast to coast. Overall condition of the hotel dining room and bedroom was a little rough. We were told there were new owners. However they were not engaged at all with us as guests which would have helped.
- Sarah (7/5): -
- RACHAEL (7/5): - Friendly staff Quite expensive
- James (7/5): -
- Chris (7/5): Wonderfully relaxing stay on the moors - Location was excellent, food was cooked beautifully and the staff were great. It’s comfortable but needs updating.
Even damp August days benefit from having a fire on in the evening.
I would prefer a more extensive evening menu I.e fish and chips, steak and pie(but I’m sure the new owners will already have plans for this)
- nicholas (4/5): - Property was being refurbished.was not told about pre ordering breakfast hence could not get a satisfactory meal, not even a fried egg, whilst I understand the property has recently been taken over, I think we should be made aware of this and this should reflect in the price.have been here a few years ago,but this time it was very disappointing.
- Louise (5/5): Promised so much but failed to deliver - Beautiful location The whole indoors: public area, dinning area and rooms from top to bottom needs major renovation. Improvements seem to have been made recently but unfortunately not enough for the price they are charging. From the outside looking in i would pay £200 from the inside looking out £70. Our room consisted of furniture which was far too big for the room (2) side table higher than the bed and wardrobe up against the bed resulted in numerous bumps in the night. The bathroom was also dated. breakfast was average even though you could tell they had gone the extra mile in terms of product quality. Unfortunately the beans were freezing and two of the 6 eggs were raw inside. There was also access water on one plate. This review is based on price mainly. The shortfalls are what i expect from cheaper establishments. The place has a real potential to be a gem with the idyllic building and surroundings and the very good outside area coupled with friendly staff but unfortunately it is let down dramatically by the above mentioned areas.
- Jacqui (3/5): Not recommended - Hotel was being renovated but we weren’t made aware of the fact that the restaurant would be serving limited meals when we booked. Hotel was very run down and seemed dirty
- HelpOnTheWay (10/5): -
- Sean (10/5): Excellent - Nice pleasant hotel friendly staff gorgeous location
- Stephanie (9/5): Lovely stay at this hotel - We were doing the Coast to Coast Walk and stayed here for the night. Excellent and delicious evening meal and breakfast. Lovely room. Met the owners in the morning who were very friendly. They have recently taken over this hotel and are doing it up room by room. The meals were excellent including the packed lunch they provided for our walk the following day.
- Julie (10/5): Fabulous free dinner, beautiful location - Although the owners are very new and the kitchen renovation was underway but not finished the owner with the limited facilities cooked us dinner. Her own recipe. Fantastic. Plus she did not charge us a penny !
You simply would not experience such a generous gesture . The location is beautiful. We will be back for sure The building is quaint. Some parts are about to be renovated so the decor is not perfect yet but work in progress
- gayna (10/5): Stunningly perfect - The location is stunning, a real hidden gem.
Beautiful food (dinner & breafast)
Very comfortable room with the lovely added extras (Taylor’s coffee, bottled water)
Staff were all very helpful and friendly.
We’ll see you all again soon.
- Tim (10/5): Lovely stay in Yorkshire - Short notice stay price was very good, location was lovely, the food was excellent and just a bit different and breakfast was good with a good range and choice
- Chris (10/5): A great welcome at this characterful Inn - A great welcome at this characterful Inn, recently under new ownership, from owners and staff alike.
Large spacious dog friendly room
Excellent evening meal and breakfast,
Thoroughly recommended
- Jules (4/5): Disappointing - Owner and staff were friendly. Needs a complete revamp. Pictures do not represent the current state of the rooms. Poor cleaning and DIY skills. Drink prices varied on each visit to the bar. The food was over cooked and dry.
- Jane (6/5): When the refurb is complete we will be back - Plenty of hot water and decent shower, comfy beds and quiet for a good nights sleep, breakfast was exceptional, dinner better than your average pub grub and they made our dog very welcome. The building is very tired and in desperate need of an upgrade and redecoration. We understand new owners are about to embark on a programme of refit and refurbishment
- Gillian (5/5): Interesting! - Location Very run down and tired decor. The website did not reflect reality. The very recent change of management promises to improve the situation and there are promising signs but it is very much a work in progress. Would have wished to be informed of the situation beforehand.
We wish the new owner every success .
- Mc (6/5): Pleasant - The building was probably over 150 years old and in need of renovation but full of character, lovely area steeped in history. Staff were great young and helpful, especially the lovely lady who served us a breakfast with a smile. They are trying their best to run a hotel/ restaurant/bar and do work on a very old house at the same time so expect some noise. The noise but it was only for a short while and had a good sleep.
- Amanda (8/5): Recommended - The location is gorgeous and convenient on the C2C. The new owner/manager is really wonderful. When we first walked in, we were concerned about the state of the interior and our room. The farm store was (permanently) closed and the hotel and pub did not seem nearly as nice as we thought it would be based on the website. In all fairness, they should take the website down as it does not give a fair impression of the place as it is now.
However, the new owner (who apparently had been there less than a week) went out of her way to solve a concern we had with the mattress and sincerely seems to want to breathe new life into the place. It has so much potential and is in such a great location. It just feels like it has been neglected a bit by prior owners. The new owner seems very industrious and caring and will no doubt be the right person to breathe new life into this hotel. We were so impressed with her customer service and care for us and the other guests that we would definitely recommend it despite it being a “work in progress.” I’m sure it will be completely turned around within a year.
- Stuart (3/5): Just no - Bed and bedding was clean Everything else was very dirty and old, service also a bit chaotic
- Pat (10/5): Holiday - The staff was lovely nothing to much trouble,, loved the garden so peaceful and quiet ,,food was amazing There was nothing I didn't like
- Simon (2/5): - This is not a very good place to stay. Has seen better days and is now being run as a way to make money for renovations I assume, or just to run it into the ground. Could use a significant makeover or lower prices. The worst place we stayed on the Coast to Coast. Only saving grace was the food was OK, not amazing, just OK. Service was poor mainly due to being understaffed I think.
- Mark_g. (2/5): DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!! - The location is great in a lovely village on the C2C route. It looks good from the outside..... that's where the positives stop, unfortunately! Mixed/weird welcome on arrival, not what we'd been used to. Pub itself is dark, dirty, and in need of a serious deep clean & refurbishment. The room we stayed in was awful, again, dark & dirty. The decor has to be seen to be believed and IS NOTHING LIKE ADVERTISED ON BOOKING.COM OR THEIR WEBSITE.
It's also massively overpriced for what it is.
Staff at breakfast were nice & and polite, and breakfast was OK, but that couldn't undo the damage already done.
I would NOT recommend staying here, and in my opinion, it should be closed and not reopened to the public until a full refurbishment has been carried out.
Very disappointing experience.
- Rosalyn (3/5): Place not welcoming, unclean, inadvertently staffed. Breakfast menu sounds good but not. - We were asked when we arrived what time we wanted breakfast and to choose there & then choices. 8.30 when we were expected asked again what we ordered it arrived 9.20, very small portion and not very warm. Service poor, reception poor, cleaners all over the place trailing wires. Stairs very steep no proper handrails a death trap for elderly and slightly infirmed people. Floor dirty bathroom sink dirty and toilet stained.
- Danxing (4/5): Disappointing - Free Breakfast is included with room booking, but I didn't have it since they start serving breakfast at 8:00 am, and I would like to start hiking earlier. Dinner was good. The room was dirty, it seemed like it hadn't been cleaned for a long time. The rooster crows start at 3 am ( Met a lady in the morning, she will be the next owner of the property, wish her luck, and the property will be better under the new management.)
- Bill (10/5): - The New Owner and Manager knows customer service and is a great cook too. Apologies, didn't get her name. Both our dinner and breakfast meals were delicious. We wish her well in her new adventure and we're sure the hotel/pub will continue to thrive in her hands.
- Sharon (4/5): Bit dark and run down but pleasant stay all the same - The property is lovely from outside It’s very run down inside but new owners had took over only 3days previous but was on with maintenance and making good improvements while we were there I think it’ll be a lovely place once it’s had some TLC new owners were very nice & obliging the food was really good
- Kathryn (2/5): Awful, won’t be returning. - Lovely breakfast but as a couple came 1 hour apart with different items. Bathroom wasn’t clean
Room really dated and needs a refresh.
Shower very small and bathroom terribly dated and unclean.
Food in restaurant is not what is advertised or what we’ve had before. Booked a meal and it was all frozen burgers! Didn’t stay and ended up down the road. This is not what we’ve experienced before. No complimentary toiletries/cake as we’ve had before. Told under new management for the last 2 weeks. We would ever have booked if we’d known.
Breakfast took an hour to arrive. Came 45 minutes apart!
Tried to charge us for drinks we’d not had!
- Marian (4/5): Would not stay here again - N/A Bed was very uncomfortable, room was dirty and we both got small body bites like flea bites.
- Lisa (2/5): Faulty Towers, hope it imorives as new owner is very nice - Location and pretty setting Very run down, food was a shambles. I understand there are new owners so hope for future travellers it improves.
- Katharine (6/5): Pleasant - Breakfast & Dinner were excellent. Staff very attentive & helpful. General decor a little tired, especially eg window frames.
