Guest Reviews
- Haroon (10/5): Best Host ever - The host at this place is most amazing guy. One of my drivers was stranded in Scotland and we needed an emergency room for him. The host allowed us to check in after mid night and even took my driver out for a meal before bed. I have never experienced such amazing customer service and will go stay here again just for the warm and friendly owner Everything was perfect
- calum (1/5): shite - location easy to get to but when asking a local for directions the first thing they said was oh that place is shutdown geez where do you start? hotel was closed when we got there, had some guy telling us by phone we could not get in till check in a 4pm even though i was just wanting to leave a case ( he just automatically thinks your the thickest people on the planet for turning up early and don`t understand check in times). there was no heating in the hotel , guy bled radiator when we got there, cobwebs everywhere, towels yellow and dirty , bedding also not clean . avoid if you can a halfway house would be a better option
- John (8/5): Great centrally located hotel, rooms were clean and comfortable. Danny the hotel manager couldn’t do enough to help us. - Great location, ideal for the town centre.
- Valerie (10/5): Lovely value for money hotel - We stayed here during renovations however this didn't make our stay less enjoyable. The owner Danny was so nice and couldn't do enough for you.
Although hotel is in middle of town there was no noise and was lovely and quiet Everything was acceptable even though the renovation was happening.
- Emily (2/5): - This place could be cool but is currently a dangerous fire trap.
- Bertus (1/5): Zwaar klote!!!
- Elizabeth (1/5): The worst hotel experience I have ever had. - Nothing. Do not let the location skew whatever else you read about this hotel. The worst hotel I have ever been in...avoid, and do not look at any good reviews; the hotel has since been taken over.
I was willing to overlook getting a single room when I booked a double. And was also incredibly forgiving over the misleading photos online.
*Only one towel for hands/body/hair
*One little bottle of body wash to be used for shower/hair and also for washing hands at sink.
*The shower stopped halfway through use and eventually came back on with colder water, made a horrible wailing noise throughout.
*There was no hot water in the sink
*The milk went out of date in February 2025.
*The coffee went out of date in 2022 and 2023 - no date on the tea bags but I'll assume they were out of date too.
*The bedding was dirty and had hairs in it.
*General cleanliness: cobwebs, spiders, dust and hairs.
Overall incredibly disappointing. Opted staying in my car over this hotel. How this place is still trading is an absolute mystery, a complete sham and disgrace to Scottish hospitality.
- Fiona (2/5): - This hotel is a scam - do not book. No access instructions provided, no confirmation from hotel, no contact phone number. Info provided after booking states need to contact hotel over 24hrs before check-in but Expedia provided this booking less than 24hrs before check-in. Then the only way to contact hotel is via Expedia message which states can take up to 72hrs for response.
Turned up and parked in the supposed dedicated parking area but no signage stating for hotel use, and a sign stating for another business only. Hotel building looked run down with no visible access point. Walked round trying any visible door but all unsigned and locked. No visible staff or window to grab their attention. No response to Expedia messaging and nobody to phone. Out of pocket not just for this hotel but had to find another hotel at 6pm for that night.
- Josh (10/5): Exceptional - Central location , good value for money , excellent staff , overall good place for a good price
- Colin (6/5): Pleasant -
- M (2/5): SLUM - Absolutely the most run down hotel I have ever seen.
Should not be operating.
Staff terrible - awful place.
- Lewis (10/5): Great stay on the centre of Dumfries. Been before and happily again - Central location
- David (8/5): Very good -
- James (1/5): Bad -
- Donald (2/5): - water leaking all over the place had to slam the door two or three times to close would not let a dog stay in there. cheaked out within the hour found another hotel.fire exit was jamed shut sould not be open.
- Marco (1/5): dey left me outside lost £99 - Nothing Everything
- Boluwatife (10/5): Splendid, welcoming and accommodating. - I love the fact that my Host communicated with me on direct call while I was on my journey and made everything possible for me to get the directions right and be comfortable as well. I loved the location and it wasn't far from where I was going. I slept soundly without any disturbance. I loved my stay and would recommend it 100% to others I can't think of any shortcoming, it was perfect for what I wanted.
- Ian (6/5): A basic room, in a somewhat unusual building - value for money given its central location - This is certainly an unusual place to stay. I'm not going to complain as it was pretty inexpensive for the centre of Dumfries. That said, the rooms are above what once was a bar, maybe nightclub - hard to tell, as all the ground floor is not now in commercial use (which was kind of a good thing, in terms of potential noise). Entry was by way of a phone call, the number written on a piece of paper taped to the door. The owner meets and greets, and then led me through what seemed like a maze of corridors (but also pointed out a quicker route via 'staff only doors'). The room was ok - and ensuite had a great shower. Basic tea/coffee facilities. The room was little cold overnight, the radiator did not work, and no way of heating up the room. The bed had no mattress protector. However, the owner said just to call him about the room heating to sort it out.
- Dominic (7/5): Good - The location was brilliant The amount of stairs to get to the room
- Iain (3/5): Would never stay here again, but it has given me lots of stories! - Very good location. The one member of staff was very pleasant and helpful. Kept offering me more tea and coffee sachets. Hotel shut up on arrival. Had to ring a mobile no. for someone to come to the door. Rooms not dirty but not as clean as one would like. No chest of drawers or similar for clothes, though there was a hanging rail. No soap in the bathroom (the member of staff brought me soap he had bought for himself). Bed light too dim and awkwardly placed for reading. No breakfast on offer. In the morning, shower dribbled to a halt. Rang mobile no. and, to do him justice, the young man got it sorted. Felt very sorry for him, and he did his best in dreadful circumstances. I think, I was the only guest. Not surprised.
- Claire (7/5): Good - I would like to thank Danny He really looked after me. I was lost on the one way system and he came out to make sure I found the hotel. He helped me with my bags and was so kind as I was on my own. My room Was very clean. Shower was really powerful. I will totally stay there again. Yes it was out dated but very clean. Danny couldn’t have been more helpful. The stairs due to my disability
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jason (7/5): Good -
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrew (1/5): AVOID AVOID AVOID DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR RISK YOUR PERSONAL SAFTEY - location was good for the reason we were there the hotel was not in great condition there was a bar under the rooms which was supposed to be open and yet it was never open the person who delt with us offered to show us the half eaten kebabs from previous guests and basically slammed the whole business as a waste of money
our room was hardly clean the towels had hand prints and stains the bathroom had loose tiles in the shower and the shower door was also faulty the position of the shower head ment we had to turn off the water in order to use shower gel/shampoo because there was no room to move out of the water in order to wash. the extractor fan was filthy which is a fire hazard and given the condition of the building this gives cause of concern
the toilet was barley workable with the flush handle very loose the kettle was very dirty so we didn't use it and the lock on the inside of our room was faulty leaving us concerned about safety there was only a chain to stop anyone entering our room which was very flimsy and not very secure.
on our second night as my partner used the shower the the water cut out completely due to uninformed maintenance although this was at around 10pm they kept turning off the water and turning it back on this left my partner being scalded as the water came back on without warning we tried to call the person to find out what was happening but this proved difficult at first as his phone was turned off so I had to go searching for him luckily he was in the building with the plumber he came up to our room to look at our shower and made inappropriate comments to us telling us to "not make any babies"
there was no offer of an apology but he told us we could have a hour extra to checkout (we did not take this as we wanted to leave as soon as possible) and even the process for checking out was simply leaving the key in a box attached to the wall this concerns us on a safety level.
- Shalaw (3/5): Poor -
- Tracey (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (1/5): Nobody deserves to stay in such a filthy, run down place like this. - It was close to where we needed to be and this was the only positive thing about it. Extremely outdated and ugly decor. The entire hotel and room was filthy (cob webs everywhere in the room, thick with dust, dirty carpets, smelly shower, dirty kettle surrounded by spilled sugar). Hotelier woke us at 2am with no apology because he needed our room key, his personal hygiene was disgusting and he was extremely unwelcoming. No parking at hotel. Kept awake during the night as he argued with other guests in the corridor. ‘I’m watching you’ was carved into the room door.
- andy (4/5): - A old hotel which is mostly shut down , has some rooms which are clean and comfortable, but you come in off side street and side door. I wouldn't want to stay here as a women.
- Linda (5/5): Avoid. - Central location. Dark interior, the bathroom floor didn’t feel stable when walking on it. Felt really unsafe in the place. Definitely will not stay here again. Very expensive accommodation for the standard of hotel. It should be investigated for fire compliance, also is it fit for purpose, who actually inspects these hotels. Feels like it’s a cover for ulterior activities, such a shame as the building looks like it would be a splendid place to stay in the past.
- James (1/5): Bad -
- Andre (8/5): If you go with low enough expectations they may be met - It is what it is, previous reviews pretty accurate, I expected very little and my expectations were met.
Great location The noisy seagulls from dawn
- Alan (1/5): Phoned number on door of empty building and got no reply. Never ever book here. - This property should be removed from Bookings.com Looks derelict and has a terrible reputation locally. Should not be on bookings
- Gillian (4/5): Disappointing -
- Brendan (1/5): Very rude staff who refused to accommodate a late check in even though this was initially requested - The original booking specified a request for a late check in. When the hotel was contacted (took a number of call as no answer for first two attempts) I was told that no late check in was available. The hotel then charged me the full cost for a stay they could not accommodate. The attitude of the person at the hotel was very rude and dismissive.
- Innes (10/5): good venue - quiet and looked closed - Good central venue, cheap Lots of stairs
- Martin (1/5): Not very impressed, looks closed from outside - The rooms were old and tired
- Gilleard (1/5): Worst hotel I have I have ever seen. - Nothing did stay.
Read comments below Looked like a council hostel.
The place was locked up
No lights on and a phone number on the the door to contact owners.
We made the decision not to stay.
We couldn't believe that Bookin .Com allowed to advertise this standard of hotel on their website.
- David (6/5): Pleasant - Comfortable bed, friendly and helpful owner No desk and no one on site overnight. I have serious concerns about fire safety. I will be contacting the fire service about this.
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Becca (1/5): Bad -
- Ian (7/5): Good -
- Anthony (10/5): I was touched by the kindness of the receptionist - I’m a cyclist. I arrived at 9.30pm. I was injured by a fall earlier in the day. The night receptionist was very helpful, he carried my bike upstairs to my room and made sure I was ok before leaving.
- Julie (2/5): - The most bizarre place I have ever encountered. There are no food or drink facilities at all and the room was basic in the extreme. It seems that 40-50 years ago it was a thriving hotel and restaurant but now looks and feels derelict. Do not ever book this place, I felt very unsafe as I think we were the only people in the building. I cannot understand why Expedia still have it on their website. It really needs to be closed for good. If it hadn’t been so late in the day when we arrived we would have left before we went inside.
- Damien (5/5): Passable - Comfy bed, powerful shower and quiet Very dated. Mould in bathroom
- Mark (8/5): Very good -
- Harry (2/5): Queensberry Hotel Dumfries is a dump. - The location was the only positive about this venue. The hotel is basically closed & this was confirmed by a couple of locals when I asked for directions. When I arrived the hotel was closed & there was a notice on the door asking to ring a mobile number for access which I did.Five minutes later a man arrived & let me in,the hotel was obviously not in use & was very dingy. He showed me to the room 14 a single & very basic bed, chair & clothing rail & a shower room.
He then showed me how to get in & out through the tradesmans entrance at the rear with a key fob.He then left through the same entrance.
The TV didn't work & the shower ran scalding hot or cold with no in-between.There was no bar or breakfast room & the communal areas were filthy.
Ther were no staff on duty at the hotel during my 2 day stay which I think is illegal as they are required to have a fire warden available at all times.
This is not the type of facility I expect to get through Booking.com it is a dump & was poor value for what I paid.In view of this I request compensation as it was not as described on your website.
Harry Bennett.
- Caroline (1/5): This hotel is completely run down and I can’t believe we had to actually pay to stay in it - Absolutely nothing, the whole hotel is a joke Everything
- Becca (1/5): Do not book to stay here. - Nothing at all went well, it was a terrible experience. The hotel should be removed from booking.com and no one should ever stay there. It was awful. Their phone line didn't work, it was impossible to get hold of the hotel. On arrival it looks like it is not open at all ever. There is a piece of paper taped to the door to call a number to gain entry at all times of the day. When someone turned up to meet my colleague there were rude and scary. The place was filthy, no lights were on. It is not a running hotel. It has to be a scam. Do not book to stay here. We couldn't stay there it felt horribly unsafe and had to arrange alternative accommodation for our stay.
- Lance (2/5): - This property is abandoned!! Arrived there on a Sunday night for reservation but hotel is empty. Don’t book!
- Michael (1/5): Bad - Unclean
Door didn't lock
Dated
Poor finish
- Hjc123 (1/5): Really poor hotel and rude proprietor. Avoid - The room was clean The hotel was drab in the extreme, just a warren of corridors up flights of stairs, dimly lit and tatty. The proprietor was extremely rude; he seemed to be mightily indignant that we hadn't turned up exactly at 4pm when the check-in time was "from 4pm". He had apparently been phoning me but my phone was (luckily) tuned off because we were eating at high-class restaurant. He showed us to the room , which was tiny. and after he showed us how the keys worked he then turned to our friend, who had helped us up with our luggage and said "you have to get out of here now" and "what are you doing here?" she said she was helping us with our luggage and he said "I could have done that you have to leave NOW" and something about health and safety. No idea what all this was really about.
The room, as I said was tiny with a very small double bed taking up almost the whole room; there was barely space to walk between it and the table on which there was a kettle and a TV. The TV didn't work. I cannot comment on facilities at the hotel because there weren't any (except a permanently closed coffee shop on the ground floor). Not worth the money
- Manus (6/5): Pleasant -
- Jason (2/5): Never again. And I’m the least fussy person. - Nothing Dirty and run down. Toilet was broken and shower head/ door etc were all broken.
- Karen (3/5): Awful sleepless night in a very strange locked in hotel. I seemed to be the only idiot staying there! - Not much, unfortunately from the moment I arrived and the doors were locked I had concerns. I had to ring a number to get any information.
I was told to come back at 4pm. So I had to tow my suitcase into the shopping centre and wait for 2 hours. This was after towing my suitcase 2 km from the train station. I was not impressed. The manager had to unlock the front doors to let me in. We the had to navigate three lots of stairs and dark dooming passages with my suitcase in tow and one staircase was a spiral staircase! The paint work was awful, purple , yellow and red which just added to the dreary atmosphere.
After all this, the room was small and cramped and again dark dreary walls and curtains. It was also freezing. I was put in a room on the second or third floor, at the very back of the building. I did not see or hear anyone else at all. I was shown by the manager how to get out the delivery entrance into a side alley which again meant navigating long dark passages and three sets of stairs. I was not impressed. I was booked for three nights but I slept in my clothes and left the next morning. It was absolutely awful. I called it the “ Bates Motel” to my friends. Don’t go there.
- Terry (1/5): I had to wait 25mins to gain entry, no staff working at all no bar or restaurant - Nothing Everything except the cleanliness of the room
- Leona (8/5): Good value hotel, centrally placed and helpful friendly staff - good value
- Gibson (10/5): Exceptional - The location was brilliant Very quiet too
- Karen (5/5): I didn’t stay, I spent one night there and had to get out - Location The maze of corridors and stairs everywhere.
The dark paint on walls and shabby brown carpet.
Really it desperately needs a makeover.
Recommend paint all walls a lighter colour and change the horrible carpet to lighten the place up.
Put in a lift or two !!
- Gunite (1/5): dirty, stained beds -
- Robert (1/5): Could not get in - Terrible It was appalling
- Brogan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (3/5): Poor - Not a lot Heating was inadequate
- Selina (2/5): Very poor - The pillows had someone else's hair on, the bathroom was dirty and was overpriced for what it offered.
- William (5/5): great location pitty rooms were cold - central location very cold rooms
- Jonathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (6/5): Pleasant - Good
- Marie-lou (6/5): Pleasant -
- Guest (1/5): Shocking !!! - Didn’t stay at the Queensberry ref below Nothing as when we arrived we were told there was no booking and it had been cancelled this is after I had paid in advance for the trip.
- Michael (5/5): great location shame about the rest of the hotel being refurbished - can’t fault the location being refurbished
- Tony (2/5): Disgusting - Arrived at property at3.30 as stated waited till4 o clock no one came hotel looked closed down and in bad condition I don’t expect to have to ring people to let me in when I’ve been charged £198 spoke to hotels.com not received a refund
- Jack (4/5): Disappointing -
- Aram (1/5): Bad - Very cold room I was asking staf he say everything not working very cold not nice no good
- Nicola (4/5): Disappointing -
- Liam (10/5): Exceptional - Owners sound we was working away made us feel welcome and even brought us a portable fridge.
Thanks
- David (8/5): - Very convienent for the town centre. Our room was basic, but clean with a very good shower.
- Louise (4/5): Disappointing -
- Gerry (6/5): Pleasant -
- Alison (1/5): Terrible it was like staying in a haunted house - The room was clean no staff no breakfast
- Merryn (5/5): Passable -
- Sidney (8/5): Very good -
- Maurice (2/5): stand clear unless you are unfortunate enough to be homeless. a shock to the system that’s for sure. - it’s not a hotel. it’s a doss house. where your given a key and a fob for a side door down a side street. there are zero facilities. the front door hasn’t been open since popeye was a boy. it’s like emergency accommodation or it’s like. that’s fine. but for£99 on a September Tuesday night. omg. it would be ideal for all the unfortunate homeless people but not for paying travellers.
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Danielle (8/5): Very good -
- Boab75 (10/5): Exceptional - Danny the host was very helpfull and friendly
Hotel very clean

Thanks Danny Nothing
- John (2/5): Never again. I was conned and robbed - There was no breakfast Had to phone to get access on arrival. Had to switch rooms second day. Said he would text me wifi code. Nothing received. Room not serviced at all . No bar facilities.
- Ian (4/5): Disappointing -
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok night - Comfortable bed, little bit noisy outside had to close the window, little bit dated.
- Keith (7/5): the location of the hotel, right in the centre of dumfries was excellent and made up for any shorts - the location was excellent, the room was very cosy and clean the owner was very friendly and helpful, the town of dumfries is a very friendly town and exceeded all my expections will be back again next year, there was nowhere to put your soap and shampoo when you were having a shower, apart from that everything was fine the hotel reception were not in operation, but we phoned the owner on arrival and he was there within 10 mins
- Alexander (4/5): We wanted a room and got it, no probs with the room. - room was clean, hot drink facilities and the tv worked. there was parking for the car though basic, and it was warm Had stayed before and there was a bar etc. The hotel is really closed with a hand written sign on the main door to call a number to get it. The guy came very quickly, took us to the room, and we had a key that separated the accomodation area from the empty parts of the hotel. There is no breakfast but plenty of food places around.
- Chloe (8/5): for a single night I really enjoyed and felt relaxed and ready for the morning. would recommend to visit - very up to today, clean and a lot of room. perfect for a single night to a few nights. location right on the dot to great food and bars.
- Alex (8/5): Very good -
- Audrey (4/5): Oh no - Got to hotel and thought omg what have I booked, place was closed, in darkness and a sign on door to phone to get let in. Had to be let in through the side door, stairs up,stairs down, doors n corridors. Knackered by the time we got to the room. Bed was clean but very very soft. Mirror broken. Wouldn't recommend this hotel at all.
- Thomas (7/5): A comfortable stay which far exceeded low expectations. - Very friendly manager who came and met me to show me the parking and show me to my room. Very clean room, new shower which was excellent. Street was surprisingly quiet at night as well. The location is very central for Dumfries. Nice bar and food place (The Granary) just around the corner. The fact that there is private parking is great, even if some guests might be initially put off by the location of the parking. There's no getting around the fact that since the downstairs bar is currently closed, staying in the hotel feels a bit strange--you enter through a side door on a scruffy side-street, and there's no resident staff. (That said, if the bar *was* open it might have been a noisy night). The location is actually grand but on first sight is very off-putting since there are a fair few closed and derlict shops and buildings around. Some guests undoubtedly will baulk a bit at this--but don't judge a book by its cover. The rooms inside are very clean and comfortable.
- Stuart (5/5): Passable -
- Neil (10/5): - Nice clean room. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Would stay again. Thankyou
- Ashley (10/5): Excellent stay - How excellent the room was spacious, very nice and quiet and worth the stay. Nothing.
- Judith (8/5): Very good -
- Adrian (9/5): Lovely stay. - Superb host ( owner, manager) even carrying my bag to my room, lovely clean room
