Guest Reviews
- Sonja (9/5): Very nice - good food, friendly owners, very clean. Although a bit out of date, the rooms were spotless and obviously maintained with loving care. The bed squeaked with every turn.
- Alan (7/5): -
- Ali (4/5): Disappointed, but a good place for a hotel in such a rural area. - Breakfast was good. The hotel was cheap for me and in the rigfht place when I needed it. There was no atmosphere in the hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful but not smiley or chatty.
The mattress was very lumpy. no need for that these days of rolled up cheapish toppers.
- Jane (7/5): Not too expensive, beds were comfortable and breakfast was good. - The breakfast was good. Freshly and nicely cooked. There was a funny smell in the bedroom and it was not brilliant sharing a bathroom.
- Sethu (7/5): Fair accomodation in the single room for a single night stay. - Breakfast was good especially how well the mushrooms were done. I could hear noise from the passing vehicles on the streets.
- Phil (9/5): - Friendly staff and locals, excellent food. Good value for money Nothing
- Earnshaw (7/5): Friendly and comfortable - Breakfast great staff great, pub great, we had a lovely time. We have been before and knew what to expect, so we have no issues.
- Alan (7/5): -
- David (8/5): Cheap - Very reasonably priced if all you want are the basics. Very small room (I obviously appreciate I booked a single), antiquated radiator was either hot or cold. All very dated and in need of a refresh. The whole hotel was cold and not very welcoming.
- stuart (8/5): Great little stop off with good food good staff - Value for money Nothing
- Graeme (9/5): - Very nice stay, owner made us feel very comfortable during our stay Couldn't ask for more for the money
- Merijn (6/5): Interesting place, bit worried when we checked in but got better over breakfast - Good location, good food options in neighbourhood, good breakfast service Old, run down, smelly room, in need of some tlc
- Ashley (10/5): I would definitely recommend stopping here ,I was cycling and recommend it for a stop - Breakfast was good and owners great. None
- James (6/5): -
- Adam (7/5): -
- Svt (7/5): -

- Farquhar (2/5): - bed mattress was poor.
- Margaret (10/5): Handy stopover on concert tour - Location perfect for a concert that night just along the road. I was the only resident, so shared bathroom was not an issue, but not something I would usually book. Breakfast was delicious, everywhere spotlessly clean, friendly owners. there was nothing not to dislike.
- Alan (8/5): -
- Charles (9/5): Comfortable stay . Will consider staying again when next heading north. - Breakfast was delicious.
Carpark is good.
Value for money very good.
Nice quiet village considering hotel is on the main road north. Shared bathroom is unusual these days but price reflects the situation.
- David (10/5): Perfect and hope I can stay here again when working up this way - The staff were amazing I was out much too early for breakfast so they packed me a lunch instead which was very nice. Nice food and a nice bar too.
- ALFRED (7/5): -

- Emily (7/5): Good evening in a friendly pub - Very friendly welcome. Good food (had venison burger), beer and fab whisky selection.
Thanks for the good craic. A real community pub. Rooms a bit dated and mattress not the comfiest. I had a room with shared bathroom and the rooms are very close together which means they were a bit noisy. All in all for the price though I felt it was fair value.
- Richard (7/5): -
- Ian (6/5): A stop over en-route north. - Stop over on way north.
Shared bathroom.
Dog friendly, although charged extra.
- Norman (7/5): - Location Shared bathroom

- Victoria (10/5): A well appointed, comfortable stay in a great location. - This hotel was very comfortable and a perfect spot for the halfway point in my journey. The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Nothing.
- brian (10/5): - Fantastic stay at the Belgrave.great hospitality. Breakfast is first class.very good value for money.i will stay again.
- Horia Agarici (10/5): - All was good and perfect value for money. All ok.
- Curnow (9/5): -
- Konrad (10/5): Definitely worth to visit - Great location and prices, tasty breakfast, good fish and chips, worth to visit again Old windows and noise from the street but location right in center
- paul (9/5): Welcoming - Value for money
- Paul (5/5): A night satisfactory night stop at a functional rather than comfortable hotel. - Location, breakfast, friendly staff and guests Room was old and needed renovation.
- Naveen (7/5): -
- Kristoffer (10/5): -
- Ronald (6/5): Ok but room exit dangerous - Hotel is aging but room was adequate except for the room door. There was no handle on the inside of the door, except an external Yale deadbold. The bottom of the door (room 1) dragged on the carpet enough that my wife could not open the door using only the deadbold……a serious fire and safety hazard.
Food was good and the staff cordial.
- Cameron (9/5): -
- Susan Pater (10/5): HHG - Very friendly folk lovely place to stay 4 days 3 nights
- Enric (7/5): -
- Chris (9/5): -
- J. (9/5): - Leuke bar Kok was ziek dus ergens anders gegeten
- Claude (8/5): - bon accueil pres de la route
- MacCaskill (9/5): highly recommend - Friendly staff, great breakfast, clean and great value for money. ideal for a quick stop off needing no unnecessary luxuries all gd
- vincent (7/5): Overall pleasant enough. Just a shame about the breakfast ! - Great location and friendly staff The breakfast I had made me I’ll. I had to go hospital. They said something in the breakfast was definitely off
- Tim (9/5): Good hotel in a great historic town - Good hotel, room was quite small, clean, shared bathroom, staff extremely helpful, I was flying home so I had to dispense of a gas canister and the lady helped me.
- Lucas (10/5): - Very peaceful stay here, in the lovely village of Helmsdale. I recommend it. Nice music in the breakfast room by the way.
- Dorothea (9/5): Great vegan breakfast options, helpful staff, handy location! - The breakfast was fantastic! Continental options as well as a customised cooked Scottish breakfast (I got the vegan version including vegan black pudding and sausages).
Would definitely recommend, especially for solo travellers like me.
- atkinson (8/5): -
- David (8/5): -
- Matthew (10/5): Home comforts - Food top quality
Very quick breakfast served within a couple of minutes
Duvet lovely MAybe a fridge in room.but that would probably be noisy.
Pepper and Salt on every table would be great so I didn't have to keep asking people to use it.
- Brandon (10/5): - The employees were great. The area was quiet. Room was clean. It did get a bit warm at night as only 1 window opened and only at the top. Overall was a good stay!
- Lukas (6/5): -
- Alan (8/5): -
- Ivanic (9/5): Very good value for money and excellent breakfast - We stayed in the en-suite rooms and they were extremely comfortable and served our purposes perfectly for an overnight stay on the way to the ferry for Orkney. The ‘icing on the cake’ was an excellent home-cooked full Scottish breakfast with home made jam. Very good value for money. Some aspects of the hotel are outdated, but they are part of the charm, and reflected in the low cost.
- Gary (1/5): Please avoid - Free escape coffee Bed was old and springy . Room was akin to a prison cell and dirty , the whole place should be closed down and totally renovated. Shared bathroom seriously. Breakfast was extremely poor and the whole experience was unbelievable 😢. I had a better time camping up in scarsferry
- Morten (10/5): -
- Erik (10/5): -
- Peter (6/5): -
- Christine (8/5): -
- Iain (9/5): - Fantastic location on the NC500 driving the anti clockwise route. Friendly service, welcoming small bar and delicious breakfast. Facilities more than adequate for a solo traveller with shared bathroom facilities.
- Claudia (9/5): -
- Claudia (9/5): -
- Dorothy Angela (7/5): Friendly accomodating staff. Good breakfast, value for money. - Handy stop for ferry, 1 1/4 hrs from Gills Bay.
Did a cooked breakfast early for me.
- Barry (5/5): Not impressed - Nothing really, breakfast was fairly good. Shabby, dusty - enormous cobweb in room, dusty lampshade. Bedside light didn’t work, light above mirror didn’t work. Very dated bedclothes, and an awful smell of ‘bed freshener’!?
- Simon (8/5): -
- Paul (8/5): Excellent value for money. - Excellent value for money, tasty evening meal and breakfast with good service. Shared bathroom facilities (but to be fair was known at time of booking)
- Lachlan (10/5): -
- ritchie (8/5): ok - ok
- Joachim (8/5): -
- Ian (10/5): Great stay - Enjoyed the staff , very polite n helpful and going out the way to help.
- Wolfgang (10/5): - Unfortunatelly only common bathroom
- KARINE (10/5): Great place - Everything was top notch. Nothing.
- Derek (6/5): OK for a one night stop. - It was a comfy bed When we got there we were warned that the room was above the bar and would be noisy until 11pm. In actual fact it quietened down at 10.30pm and we then had a restful night. Water pressure in the shower was quite low but still did it's job (albeit slowly !!)
