• thestandard2018 (6/5): Beautiful property, but lacking service - Beautiful property in the old part of Shanghai and we absolutely loved our villa, and the entire property. Very good experience in the spa, and a decent gym. Yet, our experience with the staff was relatively mixed and inconsistent. We have arranged transfers with the hotel but got very inconsistent communication (and lack of communication therefore) about departure time - as what we requested was changed by the hotel (probably with good intention as we had flight to catch) but no one communicated that with us, until by coincidence and in the last moment I double checked departure time. Finally, as we had to leave early we requested some packed breakfast which unfortunately was quite disastrous experience - from lacking items to iced instead of hot coffee - maybe due to language barrier but still, for the level of intended exclusivity of the hotel, some pretty basic things that went wrong.

Some of the activities were not available despite being advertised as being available, and there were no attempts to make up for the lack of activities, like the perfume sachets or the newsletters.

I’m not convinced about the room’s layout; at the end of the day you spend most of the time in your room that turns to be quitte small. The entrance salon and tv room are of little usage. Run down carpets is the stairs and around the bed; needs refurbishing. Another disappointing note is the hotel layout that never funnels you through the lobby; so little chance to interact with the charming GM. Outstanding service and location

Every interaction was flawless, and the room - the villa - was incredible. Spotless, stocked with delicious mini bar items, and so tranquil. I loved sitting on the rooftop in the morning and hearing the birds sing. I wish we had stayed longer than just 3 nights. It was a sanctuary.

• thenardsblue (10/5): Where do I even begin? - To say that I had an amazing stay would be an understatement. I was waffling between this and another property, and am SO glad that I chose this one for my four nights in Shanghai. Service is as hand-ons or as discreet as you would like -- Ms. Julie (I think that was her English name) saw that I really liked the package of nuts in the complimentary minibar, and gave me some extras on my last night. Each night I would come back to a different treat as part of the turn-down service: my favorite was the bookmark. I also loved how QUIET it was, for being in the FFC and in one of the world's busiest cities. My rate included breakfast, served in the Pierre Gagnaire restaurant. Food was flavorful, and as to be expected, the bread was great. I also learned that I like kale celery juice, haha. Sadly, I was in meetings and couldn't take part in any sessions of afternoon tea or happy hour... Again, I must repeat: service was excellent. I know, at this price point, staff are supposed to be, but I also feel that there was proactivity AND warmth behind each interaction. There was a minor problem with the sink draining one night, and staff came right away to investigate. All in all a wonderful experience; I only wish I had stayed much longer. Ahh, there's always next time, right?

The house keeping staff kept the rooms in really good conditions and especially Kelly, she was a credit to the hotel for the ways she answered our queries and helped with our sightseeing planning. • Michael (9/5): Unique hotel in attractive part of Shanghai - It’s a unique property and experience in an attractive part of the city. It was as good as we hoped it would be. All of the staff are very helpful and friendly and made the experience special. Just one thing. There was a Miu Miu promotional event going on in the hotel the whole time we were there, with their staff and clients milling around near where our room was and the hotel lobby. It detracted a bit from the seclusion and privacy of our experience.

• jeffbN5710BQ (10/5): Wonderful experience. Will stay longer next time. - Remarkable 55 room hotel sweetly crafted & curated in a 1930 Shikumen building block, loving preserved. No real check in desk. They come to you. Jaya Ibrahim was the designer and if you are not familiar with his work, check him out. Aman Resorts, The Puli-Shanghai to name a couple. Meals are presented in the Michelin Star Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire. Each guest room block is 4 stories, about 12’ wide, preserving the original apartment units. All the rooms face an exterior pathway lined on one side with your private walled garden, the other side is the back of another row of units used as a servant entry for room service, which is the original Shikumen organization. Enter through your private garden into a 14’ tall ceiling reception and small powder room. A short flight of steps up to a TV room and minibar. Up yet again an even shorter flight of steps (6) to the bedroom with exceptionally tall ceilings, sitting area and wardrobe. Up another very short flight to the spacious bathroom. And finally up a steep stair to your private roof deck. I was a bit nervous buying into a townhouse configuration but it is really well done and not tiring at all for this arthritic fella. The only drawback is if you forget something in the bedroom when you leave for the day. The interior finishes are best described as a masterful blend of Asian and Western, which the Shikumens are. A modern interpretation of painted wood panel and raw silk panels, herringbone wood floors. The service is exceptional and it is what adds to the ambiance.

Front desk staff Ethan is exceptional. Paid attention to our requests, assisted in restaurant bookings. Housekeeping staff and porter services friendly and initiative. Breakfast atmosphere/ambience excellent. Service was very good too. Poached eggs very good and pastissieries excellent. Shanghainese breakfast menu not too good. Highly recommend to stay with the western menu as it was excellent.

Y el gym no tiene vista…el spa no tenía algunos tratamientos disponibles y no lo usamos. La única observación es que el baño no estaba en el mismo piso, lo cual puede resultar incómodo.

• sowhoisgeh (8/5): - Our stay last May was heavenly - it was what started our luxury hotel journey as the service we received was out of this world. From the porters who would run towards me after noticing me without an umbrella, to our housekeeping lady who took note of our minibar consumption patterns and gave more of our favourite drinks, to the breakfast receptionist who would take the stairs just so that she can wait for us again on the 2nd floor after receiving us on the ground floor, every single staff member went out of their way to pamper us. Since then we were on a quest to see whether there's any hotel out there that could top this, that is until we returned for the second time in May and realized a significant drop in service quality. While Capella Shanghai will continue to be one of my favorite hotels in the world, I would probably not make it a mission to stay here in the future. Our stay started on a strong note, after I emailed the reservations team to enquire the name of the housekeeping lady whom we met last year so we could bring a little gift for her. The Culturist, Amber, went out of her way and dug through old records to find the names of the housekeeping ladies and arranged for them to serve us again. The rest of the stay was just as magical, that is until lapses in service started to happen. There were a lot of new faces this time round, and it was rather evident that they did not possess the mentality of the staff whom we met last year. For example, we gave a box of cookies from Hong Kong to the front desk lady to be shared with the team. A few days later when we met her again, she did not seem to remember us and made no comments about the cookie. I did not want to sound like I was fishing for compliments so I did not ask her either, but it made us feel like our efforts were not appreciated. Similar things happened when I was checking out. I had to leave early for work and my partner checked out and left our luggage with the concierge. When I returned to retrieve the luggage after work, the front desk manager did not seem to recognize me as a hotel guest and did not ask about my stay. The concierge, after retrieving our luggage, also did not offer to help bring it outside. The porter was also just standing there after clearly noticing me with a big suitcase. Eventually the Didi driver helped to load it up. There were some highlights though, like the lovely breakfast ladies who insisted on feeding us and kept coming back with more goodies, and the kind housekeeping ladies, who upon receiving our gift, left a note for us and two plush toys. However, the main thing that set Capella apart from the other luxury hotels that we've stayed at was the flawless, textbook service execution. I know people say this all the time, but it truly felt like we were staying at a home away from home. Every single need that we could even possibly have, Capella anticipated it, which made this stay all the more disappointing. The funny thing was, I posted my thoughts on two separate social media platforms, and Capella read them both, but no service recovery or follow-up was made. They did not even apologize or at least acknowledge these service lapses. Granted the language I used was not as harsh as this review, but it nevertheless proved my point, that they simply just didn't care as much as before.

They took special care to provide entertainment for our two boys, a value add that any parent should appreciate. After an initial small issue with our room, the staff immediately addressed the issue and made things even better than they were before. We enjoyed every moment of our stay, and would HIGHLY recommend this property to anyone wanting a wonderful Shanghai stay with a slice of a bygone era.

We asked for a paper box to pack our excess shopping and it was delivered with packing tape; our breakfasts were sent with all of our special requests; and we were met by Thomas on our arrival and Jonathan on our departure (with gifts too!) - I felt like I was staying with a friend (who has a very elegant home!). I really love your breakfast venue - while it does not have the usual breakfast buffet, the food was consistently of high quality and the team extremely polished and obliging (even when I turned up in my post-workout gear!). It’s a beautiful and tasteful parlour and the perfect place to start my day. Sadly we weren’t able to try the lunch or dinner service - but that is another reason to come back! Your Shikumen accommodations are such a unique offering. One cannot appreciate this until one has had the opportunity to experience it first hand. Having truly distinct spaces to dine, socialise, relax and sleep is a luxury that few hotels can offer - even in a suite. I am afraid you have spoilt us for life! Thank you once again for such a wonderful experience! We can’t wait to be back!

• chiara22colombo (10/5): Excellent - My husband and I started our honeymoon across China and SEA in Shanghai and we could not be more satisfied with this hotel. The room is an original shikumen villa, whose decor is just perfect and very chic (you can tell the furniture is high quality, as there are no signs of age nor marks despite the hotel has been running for over 7 years now). The staff has been very caring and dealt with the airport in order to get our lost luggage delivered to our room as soon as possible; they really made our stay smooth and cozy (they even prepared a special welcome to celebrate our honeymoon!). Breakfast a la carte is delicious, bed and pillows the most comfortable ever and cleanliness excellent. I loved all the tips that Thomas gave us to eat like a local (that’s what we wanted) and all the activities offered (although we didn’t have enough time to enjoy all of them). A big thank you to all the staff, we couldn’t wish for a better start of our honeymoon!
• jeffbN5710BQ (10/5): Well worth it!! - Nothing short of wonderful. We will return! Remarkable 55 room hotel sweetly crafted & curated in a 1930 Shikumen building block, loving preserved. No real check in desk. They come to you. Jaya Ibrahim was the designer and if you are not familiar with his work, check him out. Aman Resorts, The Puli-Shanghai to name a couple. Meals are presented in the Michelin Star Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire. Each guest room block is 4 stories, about 12’ wide, preserving the original apartment units. All the rooms face an exterior pathway lined on one side with your private walled garden, the other side is the back of another row of units used as a servant entry for room service, which is the original Shikumen organization. Enter through your private garden into a 14’ tall ceiling reception and small powder room. A short flight of steps up to a TV room and minibar. Up yet again an even shorter flight of steps (6) to the bedroom with exceptionally tall ceilings, sitting area and wardrobe. Up another very short flight to the spacious bathroom. And finally up a steep stair to your private roof deck. I was a bit nervous buying into a townhouse configuration but it is really well done and not tiring at all for this arthritic fella. The only drawback is if you forget something in the bedroom when you leave for the day. The interior finishes are best described as a masterful blend of Asian and Western, which the Shikumens are. A modern interpretation of painted wood panel and raw silk panels, herringbone wood floors. The service is exceptional and it is what adds to the ambiance.

Luxury, real luxury, is not merely a grand edifice or a dazzling concept. It is the profound art of making every guest feel cherished, seen, and understood, and in this respect, I regret to say the Capella Shanghai falls grievously short. It is not without a touch of sorrow that I recount my experience, for the Capella promises much and aspires to even more. Its design is undoubtedly a feast for the eyes—a vertical spectacle that speaks of ambition and architectural mastery. And yet, as one ascends and descends its many levels, one cannot help but feel a certain impracticality, as though the guest’s comfort was an afterthought in the grand design. This is no small thing, for when a guest arrives at what they believe to be a sanctuary of refinement, they do not wish to navigate inconvenience disguised as sophistication. They wish, simply, to feel at home. But where my heart truly aches is in recounting the dining experience—a space that should be the soul of any great hotel. At the Capella, this soul seems to have been replaced by a rigid concept, a clinging to past glories, and an unwillingness to embrace the profound shift in how we live, eat, and nourish ourselves in this modern era. The chef’s refusal to accommodate dietary preferences such as ketogenic options is not merely a failure of flexibility but, I fear, a refusal to listen. This is not about one particular diet or trend—it is about acknowledging that we live in a world where wellness, mindfulness, and individual needs have become paramount. At the Crillon, one could enjoy the finest pâté en croûte alongside a carefully prepared, health-conscious dish that celebrated the joys of modern living. There was no conflict, no contradiction, for they understood that true hospitality does not impose but rather adapts, listens, and anticipates. It is not enough to create a culinary masterpiece if it alienates the very people it seeks to serve. To cling to the notion that ‘the chef knows best’ in this day and age is to bury one’s head in the sands of time, and time, as we know, waits for no one. The Capella’s insistence on prioritizing concept over care, tradition over evolution, and ego over empathy reveals a profound misunderstanding of what luxury must be in this era. This is not the 1980s or 1990s when indulgence was measured in calories and decadence alone. We have moved into a time when people seek not just flavor but wellness, balance, and harmony—when they wish to be cared for, body and soul. To offer anything less is to betray the very essence of hospitality. What saddens me most is that the Capella Shanghai has the potential to be a sanctuary, a place where the beauty of its design could harmonize with the warmth of its service and the adaptability of its offerings. But it is not enough to create a beautiful façade, to build an ocean of ambition while forgetting the lifeblood of that ocean: the guest’s satisfaction, their comfort, their joy. True luxury, as I have seen it and lived it, is not found in Michelin stars or lofty design but in the quiet attentiveness of a staff that truly cares, in the small moments where a guest feels understood without ever having to ask. It is found in an establishment’s willingness to evolve with the times, to marry elegance with relevance, and to embrace the modern rhythms of life without ever compromising its timeless grace. And so I must say, to the Capella Shanghai: your intentions are noble, but your execution falters. You have built a beautiful property but you have forgotten the heart And without the heart, an empty shell. Luxury, true luxury, is not about what you wish to impose upon your guests, but about what you are willing to do for them. Until you remember this, you will remain a monument to potential unrealized, and that, is the greatest shame of all.

• NomadtravelerJ (10/5): Incredible stay in Shanghai - We have stayed in Shanghai before at the Mandarin Oriental, which had incredible views and one of the most wonderful buffet breakfasts we have ever had, so we were hesitant in going to another hotel instead. I wanted to stay in a different area and we decided on the Capella Shanghai. It is a little difficult to understand the differences between the main rooms and/or configuration on their web site, however we were pleasantly surprise as it was a room like we have never stayed before. The rooms consist of a townhome type room with 3 levels and a roof terrace. It was my birthday and they had an amazing array of sweets and surprise decoration, which was beautiful. The attention to detail was like no other hotel we have stayed at and Rose was amazing helping us with all the reservations and during our stay. The grounds are beautiful, the breakfast was good and "a la carte" rather than a traditional buffet. The gym was great and there is a steam sauna, the small pool was not operational during our stay. The amenities in the room, turn down service, everything was incredible.

Having a multifloor villa to ourselves was a delight and we loved the decor with wooden paneling and elegant art and floral pieces. Outside of our villa, the hotel property is highly photogenic, with ivy covered brick facades, calming pools, and a former water tower turned modern neon lighting at night. This neighborhood is very walkable too. When we return to Shanghai, Capella will be top of our list.

Helped me solved all my problems. Booked excellent restaurants for me and got me good seats, despite late reservations. Could not ask for more. This hotel goes to great length to make sure that their customers are happy. I have no hesitation in recommending it to those who look for good service from their hotel. Hotel is set in a very good surroundings and the villas are beautiful. A bit disappointed with the bathroom as it is located on a different floor from the guest room. But this cannot be helped due to the fact that the hotel rooms are fashioned from historic buildings and the size of the each floor is limited. The slight disappointment was more than made good by the superb service of the hotel.
