Guest Reviews
- David (7/5): -
- Raymond (7/5): good enough for what we needed - good value for money
evening meal was fine
breakfast good value for money
staff were friendly and polite
good location for catching the ferry there was NO sea view despite the name and location
the whole place was very tired and in need of updating
- Mike (8/5): Perfect location for an overnight stay. - Bedroom was clean and bed was so comfortable. Perfect location. Bathroom was a bit tired, had to juggle the shower door to stop water escaping into bathroom floor.
- Neville (6/5): - The location was great. Can barely get any closer to John o Groats.
The food in the restaurant was excellent in quality, quantity and value.
We had issues with the room but the staff came straight away and tried their best to resolve it. The shower tray was blocked and when we tried to use it, black gunk came back up the plug hole. The staff tried to sort it but were ill equipped to do anything.
The staff in the restaurant are quite slow but there is nothing to rush around for that far north.
- Tracey (8/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): excellent location - excelent staff nothing

- Andrew (10/5): fantastic location - excellent staff and facilities nothing
- Julie (8/5): -
- Peter (8/5): - really nice staff, not too pricey. tea and cookies in the room. Brewery is also not far off and worth a visit. had a rather small room, but sufficient for our 1 night stay.
- An (6/5): -
- Colin (4/5): - It took over an hour to get dinner.
- Ruth (8/5): -
- Sheila (6/5): All right for an overnight. - Convenient location. Barking dog at 4.47am in next room.
Waiting an hour for an evening meal only to get the wrong order.
- Anthony (8/5): -
- Carlotta (7/5): A nice stay - The kindness of the people
- Savita (2/5): Not happy - Locations Not clean unfriendly staff
Had email confirmation saying check in at 3 website says the same, however we arrived at 15:10 was told check has always been 16;00
- Walter1952 (10/5): - Great place. Comfortable room with a great view to the Port.
Awsome breakfast
Parking in Front of the house
Our hosts very nice freiendly and informative.
Felt very very good.
Very good Personal experience
Ilona & Walter Nothing to complain
- Daniel (5/5): Would recommend staying outside of John o groats - Staff extremely helpful and polite, couldn’t do enough for you. Breakfast nice as well. Was expecting to be in the main building in the picture, was in a room across the road, no view out the window other than a brick wall. Beds not great and pillows very flat had to use a 3rd pillow to get comfortable. Tea tray very dusty and dirty and had to wash cups up in the room. Value for money wise you’re paying for the area you’re staying in in my opinion
- Pamela (7/5): Good room, excellent location. - Location good, newly refurbished room opposite the main hotel. Enjoyed the comfort and space of the zip-link bed. Not given enough information about the hotel at check in. Not told about hotel bar or restaurant on site, as staying over the road we only discovered them at breakfast.
- Geoff (8/5): -
- maureen (8/5): Overall very good & convenient for us to get the ferry over to Orkney - Breakfast & evening meal was very good…
The staff were friendly The bathroom was a little tight squeeze, like walking into a wardrobe
- John (4/5): We enjoyed leaving the hotel - Food was good but generally a bit disappointing but staff were very friendly No hot water, not good when motorbiking, breakfast was a bit flat. Was assigned a family room when we needed a triple and it was tiny for 3 men and luggage
- John (8/5): - Clean and tidy. Staff helpful. Accommodation could use a bit of attention and sprucing up.
- Carl (6/5): -
- Audine (7/5): Warm room but cold shower - We had to book last minute because of another cancellation. Happy that we found a room. Basic room but was warm and bed was comfortable. Great evening meal in the bar. Our shower was cold. Tried again in the morning but was still cold.
- Andreas Berengar (8/5): -
- Kenna (8/5): Simple but OK John O'Groats hotel - Nice big room, big windows to two aspects, huge, comfortable bed with excellent quality bed linen (paid extra for bigger room/bed). Very close to end of John O'Groats route. Pretty good dinner options and convivial atmosphere in the bar in the evening with fellow cyclists. Bike storage in garage. Breakfast was disappointing. Continental was extremely basic and not everyone likes a cooked breakfast. Would have liked options of porridge, natural yoghurt, berries, rolls, cheese etc. Not just toast and boxes of sugary cereal.
Bathroom in need of updating and decorating.
- Jill (7/5): - Location
- Judy (2/5): Avoid this one- so disappointed - Very little but -
The staff were helpful and attentive in the dining room and the food was lovely so great as a restaurant Unfortunately this wasn’t a great experience. The room was located over the road from the bar where reception was so when I needed to get some milk it was a trek back over the main road. The room was more like a hostel room and not particularly clean. The cups were chipped and there was tissue in one where it had been wiped so we had to use our own. The bed was uncomfortable and the quilt was thin without an extra blanket as back up and it was cold enough for us to need to keep our jumpers and socks on to sleep in. The headboard was tatty and worn and there was dust across the top too. The shower was mouldy in the corners and the mirror in the bathroom was rusted with a rusty bin to complete the set. The tv worked but was tiny.
- JULIAN (4/5): Good locations - Locations It was cold, the radiators weren't working, the bathroom window couldn't be closed, and the shower water was stagnant.
- Keryn (6/5): Fine for one night or to use as a base - Good location, room was relatively clean, hairdryer and heater provided. Although menu stated ‘gluten free option’ next to a few things, I was told on arrival that these things weren’t really gluten free as they were cooked in the same oil as gluten products. Everything else in John o’groats closes at 5pm leaving options for coeliacs super limited, which meant having to do a 40 min round trip to Tesco in wick. Keep in mind if travelling while coeliac! Room was also very cold (heater provided though which did heat it up after a while) and the curtains don’t close properly so quite bright.
- Ray (9/5): - Excellent all round service
- Rik (7/5): Voor mij ok - Vriendelijke bediening Niets uitgesproken, maar gezien de ligging en de beperkte concurrentie, mag er wel grondig geïnvesteerd worden in de infrastructuur!!
- Jeanette (9/5): Great place! - Very conveniently located. Great staff. The breakfast was amazing and the bar and lounge were a great place to meet fellow travellers. Nothing
- Louise (3/5): Didn’t enjoy the stay . Very noisy, dirty, cold, beds uncomfortable - Location It was dirty and small .was in bad condition . Bed uncomfortable and small . Very noisy , cold
- andrea (8/5): -
- Peter (8/5): -
- Caroline (6/5): Would prefer not to return - Breakfast was ok, cereal’s disappointing but cooked full breakfast good. Canadian waitress exceptionally good Tiny room over the road that felt very claustrophobic. No one offered help with bags ( I had disabled daughter with me)
Dinner was a bit chaotic, though waitresses were excellent
- Frank (9/5): Good stay, - Staff, food, accommodation and location. Was better than I expected. Warm, friendly
- Carnelli (9/5): L'hotel è collocato nel punto più estremo della Scozia - Considerando la posizione remota la struttura era moderna pulita ed accogliente. Nulla, abbiamo anche cenato nella struttura e ci siamo trovati veramente bene
- phillips (8/5): -
- Stephen (8/5): - The location
- Jenny (8/5): -
- philip (5/5): -
- Peter (8/5): - Staff were very attentive, friendly and respectful. Dinner was small portions and I felt not great value for money.
- Jill65 (10/5): -
- Eleanor (8/5): - We booked and arrived at the hotel within an hour, following a change of plan. Very helpful staff. Comfy room, very convenient for our day's plans,. Would recommend.
- Peter (9/5): - The staff were friendly and helpful
The area There wasn't anything that I can remember
- Peter (3/5): If you want to be warm, don’t stay here! - Close to John o’groats Cold, no heating so had to move room at 10pm
Tepid water in shower at best
Had to walk across the road as they weren’t using main building
Furniture old, head boards peeling.
- Susan (10/5): Hotel was clean and the food and staff were amazing big shout out to out wee Canadian waitress who was so friendly and w - The hotel was clean and staff were so friendly. Nothing
- Jeanne (9/5): -
- Ceri (8/5): Cosy stay, gorgeous food and brilliant staff - Great location, and brilliant staff
- Jennifer (6/5): -
- DOROLE (8/5): -
- Claire (7/5): Great food, friendly staff tried to fix tv . - Great location, comfy bed . No television, no hair dryer . Unfinished decoration .
- Rama (10/5): -
- rebecca (7/5): - Basic but clean. Good staff. Breakfast was nice.
- Timothy (7/5): - Location was good Rooms were a bit cold although it was cold weather .
Very noisey with other clients shouting in the corridor’s
- Amanda (6/5): - The area Boiling the kettle on the floor
The mattress needs replacing
No where to put anything down
- carl (8/5): -
- Peter (7/5): Disappointing and not really excusable. - Some context - this is a hotel that was woefully unprepared for a busy night when the Orkney Ferry was cancelled. There was insufficient food, insufficient room in the bar for dinner (why not open the restaurant space?) and insufficient staff. I absolutely cannot fault the efforts of the staff to find space for us when we arrived for our pre-booked dinner, (though hotel guests should be a priority and should be made to feel that way when booking a meal), but surely this can't be the first time the hotel has had to deal with ferry cancellations - there should be contingencies in place. The room was great, but I don't like not knowing in advance that we are being accommodated in a separate annex. Lovely view of the sea. Quiet accommodation. Well kept and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was poor and wasn't what I ordered. Poor planning and organisation spoiled the experience. I could overlook the evening chaos if breakfast was better, but the hotel bar isn't a suitable space for breakfast, crowded next to lots of other people. Just not a great experience. I suspect the hotels in Wick and Thurso are better value for money.
- Wendy (1/5): Not a happy stay - Errm...??? Dingy depressing room with poor decor. Mouldy unhygenic shower room with urine stains on floor, no window curtain in en suute. Hairdryer out of sight on high shelf which I couldn't reach anyway. No heating on in room when I arrived on a stormy, very cold day. Poor quality vegetarian cooked breakfast - tomatoes deydrated but undercooked, potato scone stale/couldn't be cut with a knife, no vegetarian sausage - very poor value for money compared with non veggie breakfast ( breakfast included in price of the stay). I booked online so my room for one person cost more than a room for two people with two breakfasts.
- Macaulay (10/5): The staff make a pleasurable experience even better! Book it! - The staff went above and beyond. Can’t recommend enough I had to leave!
- Stephen (8/5): -
- John (10/5): - Ideal location to finish a days travel if your doing the NC500. Bed and breakfast was exceptional value first time trying haggis loved it as well.
- Dave (10/5): -
- Nicholas (10/5): -
- Dek (7/5): Basic but what do you expect for your money - You get basic but the pizza was really nice and the young lady who was on at the night time couldn't do enough for you.
Only had a continental breakfast as I didn't fancy a cooked breakfast but it was nice and sufficient
- Munazza (5/5): -
- john (9/5): -
- Ewen (9/5): - Breakfast was great, it included everything.
The views from our room was fantastic
- Cantadori (10/5): -
- Ian (10/5): -
- Freda (7/5): - Some of the staff were really friendly and helpful
- Fabiana (7/5): - Camera accogliete, nella struttura c’è anche il bar. Il personale è gentilissimo. Colazione buona e preparata al momento.
- Phillipa (7/5): - Friendly staff. Room was small and cramped, evening meal mediocre, breakfast better.
- Gary (8/5): Staying over for work - Staff were great
- Benoit (9/5): - Super Emplacement. Très bon Accueil.
- Lisa (9/5): - Location was great, restaurant was lovely, staff were friendly I was charged more than I should have been (charged for dog twice)
- Daniel (9/5): -
- andrew (7/5): Ok but could have been better - Location The room and cleanliness

- Chelsea (10/5): -
- Thomas (10/5): A brief stay on he NC500 - Stones throw from all of the attractions of John O Groats. Good clue for money. Hot and powerful shower. Great bar and facilities. A lovely big Scottish fry up thrown in for good measure. NA
- Gerd (9/5): -
- Tony (7/5): - Both my evening meal and breakfast were very good. The bathroom appeared to have been "shoe horned"
into the bedroom.
All though I appreciated the advice to keep the bathroom door closed when using the shower. The idea that failure to do so could result in activating the fire alarm, was a little concerning.
- Andrea (8/5): Very functional and good for our short stay - Our room was a good size and just what we needed, Water tank directly over the bedroom was very noisey when cistern flushed
- Brian (9/5): - The staff very good had to ask to move rooms. Room 25 should be a store room. Thankfully Charley could move us. Very helpful young man. Food excellent and value for money. Heating in room very hit and miss. Not having any heating on second night.
- Shoan (8/5): Good enough for a night halt - The staff is very pleasant and the location is good. Of course, John O' Groats itself is a pretty shark place so it'd be difficult to have a 'bad' location. The food is a tad bit below average. Breakfast felt like it was from leftovers. The staff were very courteous and nice though.
- Andrii (10/5): -
- Andrew Cecil (8/5): - The bed was comfy and quiet the food was excellent. The room 5 was a nice size and the bathroom was spacious however the three days we were there it wasn't cleaned once. The TV didn't work very well, the loo seat was broken and the pluck for the sink wasn't on the chain although we could use it it was difficult to get it out.the bathroom could do with a table to put wash bags on.
- frances (7/5): Not a great experience - It was ok No lifts to rooms. Rooms were in need of refurbishment
- Sue (9/5): A great location, friendly comfortable hotel that serves good food. - Superb location, clean comfortable room.
Good service in the dining room & a good dinner menu, Great food both at dinner & breakfast. The staff even welcomed my little dog. The heater in the bathroom would not turn down making it very hot in there.
