Guest Reviews
- graham (10/5): very freindly staff - buses are a bit iffy my own fault should have downloaded bus times for the area staff and locals where very freindly take aways just around the corner will book again next year will make sure to get more information for the buses just want to give the staff a big thumbs up nothing to complain about to be honest
- Allen (10/5): Staff were great and welcoming. - Local Bed was little bouncy
- Josh (7/5): -
- Pete (10/5): -
- Susan (5/5): - There was no food available that I was aware of. The Pub overall was great & had great staff and the locals were very friendly. What I didn't like, was when we left on the Sunday morning there was no sign of any staff. We did not know how to exit & where to leave the key card. It wasn't until I thought about it on the Sunday that it dawned on me that we may have been alone in the building all night, so if anything had gone wrong, what would we have done? I have tried calling the pub to check if anyone was there as we did not see anyone. When I am staying in a hotel I like to think I am safe.
I look forward to your comments on this.
- david (7/5): - Room was a good size and very clean. Plenty of storage. Nice en suite. The noise. Could hear lots from the pub downstairs and the adjacent rooms.
- Langford (5/5): Nice one - Lovely Nothing
- Tom (8/5): Comfortable, homely, characterful - The location for me was fine. Room was awesome. Very comfy bed. Good size TV. Room smelt nice, of pine word or something. Clothes hanging area useful. Shared kitchen had fridge, microwave etc. Shared toilet fine. Near nice parks. Staff helpful and welcoming. I struggled to keep electric shower at right temperature. Seemed to be either hot or cold! Plates piled up in sink of shared kitchen, but due to other guests possibly not poachers. WiFi patchy in my room!
- Louise (9/5): - Very comfortable and amenities No dislikes realy good area with shops and accommodation nice clean and comfortable
- Alison (6/5): Reasonably priced for the area above a lively community pub - We needed a place to stay in Stevenage and this appeared to be reasonably priced for the area with good reviews. Initial access to the room was through the pub, behind the bar, up some stairs, and the landlady offered an alternative route through a utility room next to our room, this lead to an outside seating area then down an outside flight of stairs into a courtyard area and then off the property via a gate. It wasn’t ideal and as we were only staying for one night had limited luggage. Although the room appeared to be clean enough, we didn’t attempt to take a shower as it didn’t seem that hygienic and opening to the cubicle somewhat restrictive. There was also a distinct odour, possibly drains.
Although positioned above a pub in a lively community, the noise level was understandable but didn’t continue much past closing time.
- Clive (2/5): Warm welcome from the staff, clean room, but uncomfortable night and morning. - Very Friendly staff, room was clean, access to kitchen facilities. If weather was nice (it wasn't) access to roof terrace. No heating room was very cold, shower was uncontrollable and scalded, no cold water (very low pressure) in the morning, external access only, no staff out of hours to report faults to.

- john (9/5): - It was the staff Nothing really
- Gwillim (8/5): - Staff
- Tony (7/5): Just stayed one night. Was ok for this. - Clean room, nice en-suite.
Pub beneath ok to meet friends. Karaoke was a bit rough!! Very hot. Lady tried to turn down radiator unsuccessfully.
Bed not the largest.
- Ian (10/5): Brilliant!! - A great well equipped room, shared bathroom was very clean. Laura the landlady was lovely and so helpful. A great place to stay Nothing
- Fernando (7/5): Cómoda y tranquila -
- Gould (5/5): Expensive. - Location suitable for us, as family close by. Food unavailable, despite large 'NEW MENU' sign outside building.
Shower inadequate.
Unable to book in early as bar closed until 12.00am. We were in town for funeral so booking timing etc. was critical.
Access to rooms via rear, external fire escape in darkness.
- FREDERICK (7/5): - Friendly staff. Low water pressure to the shower.
- Bosha (8/5): -
- Karen (9/5): Excellent overnight stay - Super clean ensuite room on 1st floor. Wonderful helpful staff. The shared kitchen was fab for late evening chats while the pub karaoke was happening downstairs. 😄
- Neil (8/5): Good value, no frills accommodation - If you're not driving it's a bit of a walk to the Old Town or the station but it's a good value stay, the staff were very friendly and despite being part of a pub, I wasn't disturbed by any noise They don't do breakfast but that's a minor blemish
- Barry (8/5): VERY GOOD - FRIENDLY STAFF A
- Ruth (7/5): Back entrance to a pub!! - Clean and friendly Nothing
- Karen (10/5): -
- Chris (10/5): -

- Adam (10/5): A fab fun nite away - Grate location, great staff and great beer It was raining when we arrived
- Fell (8/5): Very friendly - Very friendly and accommodating staff. Good friendly pub atmosphere who made me very welcome upon arrival and during my stay. The room was clean and spacious but decoration and furniture could be better.
- Tracey (10/5): Suitable for either short or long stay. Homely. - The location was perfect for the event we were attending in Stevenage old town.
Easy access to local Suppermarkets, petrol station. Plenty of places to eat out at. Everything appeared to be within a 10 minute car journey.
The Poacher is also situated on a bus route too. Which would be a bonus for those not wanting to drive.
Presentation from the outside of the Poacher is very cute, clean and welcoming. Theres also a seating area directly infront of the Poacher.
The pub itself inside, is spotless throughout. And the staff and locals are soooo...friendly and welcoming.
Only regret was that we didn't get to have a round in the evening Bingo. Due to our prior commitments.
It sounded absolutely hilarious. They also had 🎤 karaoke after that.
So if you've got time, you can pop downstaires into the pub and join in the fun with the locals. Fantastic.
The accomadation is above the pub. And it again was spotless throughout. So welcoming and very homely.
The outside terrace has a seating area for guests to use. Its situated on a portion of the pubs roof
The is also very nice for chilling. It was nice to bask in the morning sun whilst haveing your coffee an toast.
Another bonus was that there's a car park, around the back of the pub you can use.
However theres also a small local shopping area at the side of the pub. Convenient if you need bits. And there's ample parking bays there too.
The Poacher a little gem, in the middle of a residential estate. And we would definitely recommend it to people. And we would definitely stay there again. Nothing not to like about the Poacher.
- Sunil (6/5): - Cleanliness Elec shower didnt worked. Even complained but still didnt fixed
- Leah (3/5): -
- Tracey (10/5): - It was a really hot day and there was a roof balcony where staying guests could sit out. The staff were friendly. Really clean. Excellent value.
- Parul (5/5): It’s ok good budget room but the price should reflect that - Good location, decent size room, comfy bed Check in was changed from 3pm to 4pm and I wasn’t informed so after almost 5 hours of driving I had to wait. No hand wash or mugs provided, milk pots expired a few months ago so had to go out to buy. Shower water pressure was the worst I’ve ever had, fortunately I washed my hair before coming or it would have been near impossible as even a normal shower with the trickle of water took ages
- Denise (10/5): - Gerry and Lucy….. what legends! Lovely pub, lovely facilities Nothing
- Rachel (7/5): Good budget stay - Staff were very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Bed was quite comfortable. The bathroom was a bit small, and not as clean or modern as it could have been.
- Paul (10/5): Brilliant - The room was very clean and tidy the owner Jerry and his future wife were very friendly and couldn't do more for me. I would like to wish all the best N/A
- Douglas (8/5): Ideal for a comfortable no frills overnight stay at a reasonable cost. - It was good value. Host was very personable. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. Good location.within easy reach of the Lister Hospital which was the reason for our visit to Stevenage. Plenty of parking available and quiet overnight. No in house dining facilities the biggest drawback. On the surface the room was very clean but if one wanted to nitpick one could find minor flaws. The shower wasn’t the greatest.
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Lee (8/5): Very good -
- Christopher (10/5): A very pleasant stay and will definitely be staying again - the staff were incredibly friendly and hospitable, Gerry was as described in previous reviews, nothing was too much trouble and the locals in the pub were warm and friendly There is no food available but three really good takeaways within a 30 second walk of the pub
- Johnl (7/5): Good - Wash room /toilet too small, the sink is miniature.
- Lee (10/5): Thanks for a great stay and hospitality - Gerry manger was very pleasant while staying at poachers pub.
Very nice updated pub for being a local pub.
All the local people were drinking, having fun and laughing.
Will definitely stay again here.
Fully recommend
Thanks

- Russell (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (7/5): Acceptable - Unfortunately they don’t provide breakfast Welcomed to the room which was clean but it was cold as the heating was on a timer when heating came on it was cosy only the radiator in the bathroom stayed cold , I think if they upgraded some of the furniture in our room it would improve the as some of it was suffering doors not closing properly and handles missing
- Evans (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kevin (9/5): Superb -
- Teresa (9/5): Superb -
- Bernadette (8/5): Very good -
- Christopher (9/5): Superb -
- Paul (3/5): Poor. - The person who let me in at the bar was friendly. There was no hot water in the bathroom in the evening or in the morning so having a shower was not possible.
The WiFi code was not accepted so no internet.
The room was cold at night and there wasn't enough warm bedding.
There was nobody around after the bar closed.
- Darienne (10/5): Outstanding English Inn - The Poacher is fantastic! From arrival to departure Gerry and his staff are legends. Large room spotlessly clean, shared bathroom is footsteps from room, laundry on site. Parking included, private entrance. The pub of an evening is warm and friendly. We’d come back in a heartbeat.
- Matthew (9/5): Shower issue - Peaceful and quiet. Secure and safe to stay in. We couldn't get the shared Shower to produce any heat for us to use... unless we risked a cold shower (but that not good for me).. . But the sink tap Did have hot water coming through it.
- Samuel (10/5): Exceptional - The rooms were lovely and spacious nice bar surrounded by take aways if you fancied a late night snack
- William (9/5): Superb - The room was one of the cleanest I have stayed in. The room had its own ensuite which was spotless. The bed was comfy. The location was a bit far out.
- Christine (9/5): Superb -
- John (10/5): Exceptional -

- Gary (7/5): Good -
- Jayson (7/5): good for what i got 😁 - was clean and the bed was comfy the toilet roll had finished in the bathroom and there was no spares, and no staff in the morning to check out or say bye and thank you
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (3/5): Terrible little room with shared bathroom - No Breakfast available On top of a pub which had a party till midnight music was so load my room shook
- Simon (9/5): Superb -

- Gardiner (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jasmina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional - Very comfortable room, beautifully decorated
- Damien (7/5): Good - Staff and owner very nice and welcoming. Facilities were basic enough for the price, but clean and fine for a day or two Location is not great above a pub and a 10 minute walk from the town.. But not much noise after 11 o'clock. Overall a good experience
- Kush (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sally (8/5): Friendly, warm and comfy - would recommend. - Friendly staff, warm cosy room, nice shower room
- all good 👍 Hoped for breakfast as did not realise it was room only but that was my fault for not reading it properly.
- Louise (9/5): Superb - Lovely big clean room. Welcoming staff. Great value for money. Even the room with shared bathroom has access to a kitchen. Everything you could need!
- David (10/5): Exceptional - The staff couldn’t have been friendlier or more happy to help. A great place I would heartily recommend!
- Omid (8/5): Very good -
- Susie (10/5): Excellent weekend at the Poacher - The rooftop garden was lovely the hosts were very friendly
- Adeyinka (6/5): Pleasant - No air-conditioning
- Mch (10/5): Exceptional -
- Foley (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent rooms and you won't find a friendlier staff and the owner is a gentleman tks Excellent
- Satsam (9/5): Superb - Made to feel so welcome - pleasure to stay in a clean and comfortable room. Everyone I met owner, staff, local customers and fellow guests were genuine and generous. Would highly recommend especially if you don't want the impersonal corporate hotel experience. What I liked might not be for everyone - the rooms are over a pub so lively
- Rachael (5/5): Passable -
- Lloyd (9/5): Nice people, nice room, plenty of parking and central location. Not a hotel though. - Room was clean with a window which could be opened and the bed was comfortable. Could access to the room without needing to go through the pub. Outside area where we could eat of takeaway (if not raining). Access to the shared kitchen too. The experience is similar to staying at a friends house. We had a problem with the electronic door and that was resolved by providing us with a physical key so not a problem, just a minor inconvenience.
- Andrea (9/5): Comfortable stay - The room above a friendly pub was very comfortable. The location was good with a good selection shops and takeaways beside it. The host was very welcoming
- Laura (10/5): Lovely room, helpful staff. Really nice stay - The staff were absolutely fantastic and so helpful. The room was stunning and very comfortable.
- Eve (8/5): I would recommend this for short stays - Friendly staff and room was really nice. Most of all the bed was extremely comfortable! Location wasn’t great
- James (9/5): Super clean, comfortable and easy to deal with. - Clean, comfortable and convenient A bit of a walk from the station but worthwhile for the price.
- Rosemary (6/5): Lovely owners, comfortable bed but not restful due to noise from neighbouring room - Bed was comfy and staff were very friendly You can hear the pub from below which was fine for us as it closed before 12, but getting an early night might not be possible. Also, the wall between the rooms is quite thin, so you can hear the noise from the other room, which meant we didn't get a lot of rest.
- Ruth (10/5): Exceptional - Bed was super comfy, I fell asleep earlier than i ever have, since i was a kid. Staff were very friendly. Room was fantastic.
- Walker (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gabrielle (9/5): It would have been a 10 but I couldn’t get hot water in the shower -
- Steve (8/5): Very good - Location and friendliness of staff It would have been nice to have a desk and chair in the room for using a laptop more comfortably.
- Ken (9/5): Superb - The staff were superb and very friendly and welcoming. The room was clean and comfortable. I can't fault the poacher. 10 out of 10. There was nothing to dislike.
