Guest Reviews
- Peter (10/5): Weekend break to EastSussex - Second time we’ve stayed at Wingrove House and it didn’t disappoint. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The room we booked was a premium king and had a large bathroom. We ate both nights in the hotel’s restaurant as we enjoyed the food there on our previous visit. The food was as good as we had before.
- Matthew (10/5): Hard to beat - Excellent in every way as always
- chris (10/5): - Beautiful property with very friendly & extremely helpful staff, especially Kathy at reception was so kind & amazing!
- Claire (10/5): - Great hotel with warm welcome from staff. Very picturesque site, very comfortable night’s sleep after our day of walking. Would def recommend.
- Anne (10/5): - Room clean and comfortable. Lovely bathroom with free standing bath and walk in shower. Perfectly located. Good quality breakfast.
- Michael (8/5): Wingrove stay - Very comfortable and lovely food
- BRENDA (8/5): Almost perfect - Our room (4) was at the front with the use of a verandah which was a bonus. The room was very clean and the bed and bedding were excellent. The only minor issues were the bathroom vanity unit was very tatty with warped wood and slightly peeling paint and the tiles behind the toilet were lifting with grubby grouting. A very good shower both power and temperature but possibly a new shower tray overdue. The bi fold doors to the bathroom did not work well! Several times one of us got stuck in the bathroom or couldn’t get the door open to get in and really noisy to use it during the night. Design needs a rethink. Lovely staff and excellent food. Lounge area very welcoming and comfortable.
- D J (10/5): Worth seeking out - We come back each year as its perfectly placed for Glyndebourne and it never disappoints. The village is also a delight
- David (8/5): Great place for time away - Beautiful village setting and close to everything. A few minor things that could be improved, the bed was so hard that it was hard to sleep and the noise in the hall from doors slamming from the automatic door closers and then load beeping when the doors didn’t quite close. So the food was good and the staff were fine but a lot of noise when you’re in the room.
- Peter (10/5): Birthday weekend in Alfriston - Great stay in a beautiful part of the South Coast. The room was spacious and clean, the food served in the restaurant was high quality and the staff were very attentive and caring.
- Sharon (8/5): - Lovely hotel located at the end of Alfriston High Street right behind an ancient church /churchyard. Friendly attentive staff comfortable lounge area and wonderful food. Also spotlessly clean.
- James (10/5): - Overnight in a charming country hotel. Good restaurant, super friendly service.
- Eric (10/5): Stunning hotel. - We love this hotel. It was cery relaxing with top quality food and service. We will be back alot more.
- Mark (10/5): - A lovely stay at a very nice hotel. The room was great, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the lounge etc are just wonderful. Breakfast was generous and made with excellent ingredients For some reason the whole building is really warm - which will be good for some people and less so for others - but that aside I wouldn’t change a thing.
- matt (10/5): - Our best stay in England thus far
- Alan (10/5): - Excellent staff and service.
- Lindsay (8/5): - A lovely nights stay in very pretty surroundings. Situated conveniently in the village and across from the church, we were able to make the most of the outdoor seating area due to lovely weather. Staff friendly and service good.
- D J (8/5): Always worth a visit - Always a great place to stay for Glyndebourne but patchy internet is an issue
- James (8/5): - We had a severely disabled, mobility scooter bound, guest. Access etc was not so good for him, otherwise good
- Gary (8/5): - Great hotel in a beautiful village
- Kristine L (10/5): Gem in Sussex - Great location. Good sized, well-organized bedroom with comfortable bed, plenty of drawers. Very large updated bathroom with lots of counter space. Staff are nice and helpful. Will definitely stay again.
- Brent (10/5): Superb - pure dead brilliant!! - Awesome place to stay for pleasure or business. My employee arrived early hours of the morning and were met with the most hospitable care.
Accommodation that goes the extra mile!
- Mary (10/5): - Delightful!
- Michael (10/5): family trip - lovely stay friendly helpful staff warm and comfortable
- Darren (10/5): - Wingrove House is a beautiful boutique hotel on the edge of Alfriston's high street. The property is charming with country character. Wonderful amenities including toiletries, fans in the rooms, on-site restaurant, plenty of storage, lounge areas for meeting/reading. It's a short walk to the middle of the village with great pubs, art, craft, book and souvenir shops.
Staff are helpful and well informed about local walking trails, restaurants, etc. Rooms and public areas are kept clean and there's plenty of parking in a private courtyard. The bed was comfy and they have built in USB charges for your devices. We would most definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.
- Victoria (10/5): - Fantastic staff accommodation and food
- Karen (8/5): Disappointed - Having stayed here several times before our expectations were high
Our room was a premium plus room
It wasn’t much different to the other rooms we’d booked before at much less cost
Although the bathroom was a good size
Later that evening around 10 jyst as we were settling down for the night we were stunned to hear extremely loud music coming from the room underneath us
After 5 minutes I rang reception who didn’t answer
I rang again 5 minutes later and I asked if someone could ask the people underneath us to turn down there music I was told it would be done straight away
It was a little while before the music was turned down slightly but it wasn’t fir another hour that it was turned off by which time it was after 11
We discovered the next day it was the kitchen underneath us and they’d been shouting and playing loud music I imagine whilst they were clearing up
Our room was also filled with cooking smells from the kitchen and there was a air conditioning unit outside the bedroom window
Not what we were expecting from a £230 a night room tbh
We’d stayed in a classic room before for a lot less and it was quieter didn’t smell of cooking and we weren’t disturbed by loud music late at night !
Slightly disappointed as it was a special occasion that had the Sheen taken off it
- Ronda (10/5): - A very attractive building with pleasant garden and dining facilities, beautifully kept and lovely decor. A very relaxed feel which made me think I was on holiday.
- nigel (10/5): - Great setting in lovely village.
Nice rooms V helpful staff.
Nice breakfast.
Wouldn't hesitate to stay again or indeed recommend.
- Margaret (10/5): Lovely stay - Lovely little stay we had booked it as we were attending a wedding nearby but wished we’d booked a few more nights as it would make a lovely destination in a scenic and picturesque village
- D J (10/5): Worth looking out for something special - Friendly service and very comfortable beds and modern furnishings in a delightful village.
- Linda (10/5): - Everything excellent
- Gary (10/5): - Very comfortable room. Wonderful staff & a great location. Highly recommended.
- Eric (6/5): Overpriced but comfy bed. - Room 7 was very hot when we arrived due to being in the sun. No windows open to air the room. Room was £200 but was way overpriced. No fridge so bottled water was warm. No room to put anything. The lights in the bedroom didn’t match. Tiny mirror provided as a dressing mirror. Not very good for the ladies. Trying to be “something “ but not getting there. Temple spa products were nice with a nice bathroom but low quality towels. Carpets were ok but nothing of any standard. When we first arrived we were stood for too long checking in. No invite to take a seat, just no professionalism. Breakfast was nice but for the reheated bacon! Staff were friendly at breakfast. If I had paid £120 for the room my feedback would be OK but at the price we paid it was well overpriced. Alfriston is beautiful though!
- James (10/5): Lovely food and ambience. - Lovely hotel in the centre of Alfriston. Easy parking. Very comfortable. Superb food - dinner in particular. Excellent room (premium deluxe).
- carol (10/5): - The staff were really helpful and seemed to be genuinely happy in their job
- michael (10/5): - Great stay as always
- Louise (10/5): - Lovely hotel, food was amazing & staff so friendly.suvh a peaceful pretty village & so close to the south downs way 10/10
- Maya (10/5): - So lovely but quite expensive
- Adam (10/5): - This is a lovely small hotel , very friendly, slightly quirky layout in a nice way .
Ideal for walking to Rathfinny vineyard and walks in the most stunning country side .
Great location to be able to pop into town -if you don’t want to eat in the hotel lots of choice .
Room - small but clean, well appointed, lovely comfortable bed and tea and coffee making in room.
Breakfast- included in our rate basic cold selection but great range on the hot side and some more unusual options .
We would definitely stay again
- Anna (10/5): - Fantastic place, very friendly staff, great breakfast, definitely will be back.
- David (10/5): - This is an excellent place to stay if going to Glyndebourne. It is handy, the staff are obliging, the breakfasts are good, the rooms are comfortable, parking is available, and the price is reasonable compared to a lot of the competition.
- David (8/5): Good stay but room was hot - Good hotel but rooms hot as no air conditioning and wet shower room splashed water throughput bathroom. Good breakfast
- David (10/5): - helpful, friendly staff, good value for money, close to Glyndebourne
- Ian (8/5): - Friendly and helpful staff, Very comfortable room and delicious breakfast.
Dissapointed that food stopped at 3.00pm until dinner time and the traffic noise was loud. Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
- Norman (8/5): - Virtually everything was fine except that there was a problem with supply of hot water, which took 24 hours to resolve. The restaurant food at breakfast and lunch was excellent.
- John (10/5): - The hotel is in an historic quiet village. The dining was incredible with An interesting menu. Our room was comfortable and spacious. All the staff were helpful and friendly. We will go back.
- David (10/5): - Excellent hotel very handy for glyndebourne
Overall in 44 years of coming to Glyndebourne this hotel is the best I have used
- Jennifer (10/5): Lovely hotel - Our room was on the top floor with restricted head height up two flights of stairs. However, very comfortable and some nice touches. Excellent breakfast and very helpful staff.
- Andrew (10/5): - Lovely staff, great service
- Philip (10/5): - We love Wingrove House. It's in a beautiful place, with wonderful grounds, pleasant rooms, and an excellent restaurant. Best of all are the staff. They are very friendly and always helpful.
Nothing we don't like. We look forward to coming back. And back.
- Babulal (6/5): Choose room carefully - Pleasant hotel with friendly staff. Slept badly as people in room above were making noise at midnight and even at 0410hours. Noise of cars in road through the night also disturbed us.Difficult to get air into bedroom to cool it down when heating too hot. Staff kindly provided light breakfast to accomodate our early departure. Need to avoid room 5 if you stay here. Otherwise, we will try the hotel again.
- Christopher (8/5): 2 night stay - Pleasant stay, very nice truly exceptional village,
- Stacey (6/5): - Beautiful property, staff very friendly, room spotless but heating didn't work so had a plug in radiator which made the room either too hot or too cold. TV didn't work, but was bought a TV in from another room. Breakfast on first day was medioca, 2nd day was much better. Would definitely recommend this hotel. If you want to pretty much just chill.
- Peter (10/5): - Really lovely, staff very attentive whilst professional, food great. We'll definitely be back!
- michael (10/5): - Great stay, lovely staff , the meal in the hotel was delicious
- Rupert (6/5): - The hotel is a beautiful property. My bedroom was well maintained and pleasant. The lounge area was very comfortable and inviting.
However my stay was spoilt by the staff insisting on wearing masks all the time, which I found very unfriendly, rude and intimidating. The rules that masks should be worn when walking around the hotel were thankfully ignored by most of the guests.
If you suffer from germaphobia, you will probably love this hotel. If not, then you may be better off somewhere else.
- Julie (10/5): Beautiful hotel with excellent customer service - A beautiful boutique hotel with great customer service. Rooms are beautifully furnished and comfortable with a few nice touches like fresh macarons on arrival! Good selection for breakfast and good quality produce on the full English. Only downside was Room 4 suffered with a little too much road noise (we live in a very quiet area at home so not used to it) but this was quickly rectified for our 2nd night and room 12 was perfect. Hotel staff were friendly and welcoming and nothing seemed too much trouble. Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in the area. Unfortunately we didn't get to eat in the restaurant but would highly recommend their "sister" pub the Plough and Harrow at Litlington.
- J K (10/5): Weekend Away - Had a lovely stay here, ambience is great, staff very helpful. Drinks, dinner and breakfast were superb
- Kevan (8/5): Quality boutique hotel - Very good breakfast, staff friendly and helpful good sized bedroom and bathroom, good location.
- Verified traveler (8/5): One night stay - Room was nice but unfortunately love coated right by busy road that was so noisy.
He restaurant service was slow in the evening and worse at breakfast, where there was no fresh orange by 9 o'clock.
- nigel (10/5): Great stay - Really friendly hotel with excellent service, good staff and a lovely ambience
- John (8/5): - .
- David (10/5): Excellent Hotel - Fabulous hotel. Lovely setting, great food and service and great location too.
- Sarah (10/5): Above and beyond - We booked for a member of staff working nearby, fabulous hotel in a beautiful location, staff went above and beyond for the comfort of our guest who thoroughly enjoyed his stay. Flexible and accommodating. Thank you very much.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff were friendly and helpful, the meals delicious and the general ambiance lovely. Great place to stay and explore the Downs and Cuckmere Valley.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful hotel for a quiet break. Our room was amazing, decorated to a high standard.
- Jamie (10/5): - Excellent on site restaurant very good
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. The room was spacious and comfortable and the staff were all welcoming and efficient. The only slight drawback was the lack of tea making facilities in the room, although there was a coffee maker.
- Louise (8/5): - Wonderful location, delicious food and kind and helpful service. A few things did not work in the room (lamps) and one of our rooms was noisy in the late evening as it was over the kitchen. But a happy stay - I would go again.
- Wingrove (10/5): - Staff very welcoming. Hotel in beautiful country surroundings in a quaint village. Inside hotel beautifully refurbished plus rooms are lovely with some rooms having super king size beds and wooden beam features. Definitely will visit again! Breakfast great.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Wingrove House is in a delightful setting. The bedroom was spacious and well appointed with a very comfortable bed. The outside terrace was a lovely spot for breakfast and an evening meal. I would highly recommend the hotel which is situated in the pretty village of Alfriston.
- Joanne (10/5): 25th Wedding Anniversary Stay - We stayed at Wingrove House for our 25th Wedding Anniversary visit to Brighton. We wanted somewhere really nice and were not disappointed. Staff were lovely and welcoming, room was clean and we had a lovely view over the green. Breakfast was lovely. Would definitely stay there again and highly recommend Wingrove House to others.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a charming hotel. The rooms are inviting and comfortable. The restaurant served lovely food and the service was prompt and pleasing
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very comfortable accommodation, clean, warm, spacious, good food and friendly staff. All set in breathtaking countryside, super.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful 100+ year, character filled property in postcard-perfect Alfriston. Room was super comfortable with a delightful walkout to spacious, US Deep South-esque balcony. Decor is iconic, modern but with a solid nod to its historical roots. Incredible restaurant with a chef who resets the bar on everyday standards (best quiche I’ve had in years, spectacular scotch eggs) as well as delivering top tier fine dining. Staff were delightful - friendly, thoughtful and hospitable. They laid on a complimentary buffet on our late arrival, took a personal interest in our activities and let’s us check out a late on our departure. An absolute gem.
- Margaret (10/5): Xmas 2019 - friendly and helpful staff. Very relaxed and comfortable place to stay close to local family festivities but gave us a great escape to some peace from time to time
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Overall we had a lovely couple of days staying in Wingrove House. A couple of points: We were surprised that there was no shaving point in the bathroom and the plug to the basin needed reattaching. We found the lighting in the bedroom much too low. A bath mat would have made getting in and out of the bath a little less hazardous! A couple of extra games to complement the dominoes and Chinese chequers might be an idea. However, the staff were all very pleasant, the food was delicious and the decor was lovely. We were comfortable and well looked after. We would book again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Stylishly decorated with relaxing, cosy lounge with log burner.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely place, very comfortable, well furnished - gorgeous breakfast :-)
- Verified traveler (6/5): Weekend stay; October 2019 - We’d paid for a superior room and the room we were given was on the top floor of the building and was very clean and cosy however it faced a main road and the windows were single glazed. There were so many cars going past all night that we didn’t sleep at all and the hotel were unable to offer earplugs.
It completely ruined an otherwise lovely weekend to the South Downs.
If you are a light sleeper it would definitely be worth calling the B&B in advance and requesting a room around the back of the building as the hotel in general was lovely.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Walking base on South Downs Way - Well positioned for South Downs Way. Waiting staff in restaurant excellent. Extra pillows provided on request.
Animal head in hallway rather off putting. Very good cooked breakfast but cereal packets and Scottish yogurt disappointing. Limited evening meal choice for vegetarians.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The location is beautiful, but unfortunately the hotel didn't offer the peaceful stay that I had hoped for. Most significantly, I could hear every footstep in the room above me, which woke me up during the night, and far earlier than I had hoped in the morning. During dinner in the restaurant, there was also an intermittent droning noise, like building work, that was very annoying. The food too was disappointing. I ordered chicken with goats cheese and prosciutto, and despite those strong ingredients, the dish was utterly bland, made worse by the accompanying risotto, which had the flavour and texture of wallpaper paste. The staff were friendly, but there were also service issues, such as forgotten drinks. Given these issues, I was surprised to see that I had unknowingly been charged a 10% 'discretionary' service charge.
One final annoyance was that the double bed was in fact two single beds pushed together, which is never comfortable. You end up having to sleep as though you were in a single anyway, so I wish i'd gone for one of the cheaper options elsewhere in town.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Stairs and no lift. Low ceilings in bedroom(hit head about a dozen times)
