- Maureen (8/5): Perfect location and lovely apartment. - The apartment was situated directly above the port /old harbour town. It had a small balcony with views out over the harbour. Access by stairs near the property took you directly to the harbour. The apartment was clean with a very comfortable bed. The location was perfect for our short stay and we would highly recommend. Note if you stay on a Friday nite there is music played in the harbour by entertainers so if you are planning an early nite you will need earplugs. If not, enjoy the sounds . Loved our stay.

- Avouri (8/5): - The location of the room was exceptional. It was nicely designed, with a big and comfy bed. The jacuzzi added some extra luxury The room is very purely ventilated and as a result when we arrived there was an intense smell of closed space and mould. There was only one window but it was not enough to air the space. The owner assisted us with a dehumidifier which improved the situation but only slightly.
Another problem is that you are not allowed to park around the room as the area is reserved only for local residents. We were not warned about this when we arrived and so we got a fine ( the nearby sign that informs about this restriction is covered with stickers and so it's easy to miss).
- Corinne (10/5): Charmantes Apartment in zentraler Lage!

- Camila (10/5): Great stay - Loved the location. Quiet. Close to everything. The bathroom setup was a little strange. Wish we had a microwave for all the leftovers. Clean. Well maintained. Housekeeping came every day. Didn't have a microwave. Pictures made it look bigger than it actually was. The AC could be updated.
- Cynthia (10/5): My stay at Madonna del Mare was magical! - I loved my room — the lighting, the bedding, the bathroom— everything.
And the staff were brilliant!
- Ives (10/5): - Excellent location, right in the old town.
Room was exceptional, with the big jacuzzi bath. Felt like a real treat and we really enjoyed our stay.

- TRIANTAFYLLOS (10/5): - Τοποθεσία, διακόσμηση Υγρασία και ήπια αντίστοιχη μυρωδιά που βελτιώθηκε με το κλιματιστικο στη θέρμανση.

- pam (4/5): - Very noisy on a night, air con didn’t work or the hairdryer or the safe, needed a code for the tv no instructions, no one there when we arrived and the same with another couple and they had a code that didn’t work, balcony very small glass floor with constant light on, maybe ask people’s ages we were kept awake till 4am most nights. We are shattered we needed the doors windows open as not a fan of air on however that didn’t work so had to shut everything to bloke the noise. Really not a nice holiday owing to the room.
- David (10/5): So happy to have found this property. This is our second year in Chania and it was so much better this time. Convenientl - Beautiful modern room. Incredible view and plenty of privacy. It was perfect for our liking
- Familie Wiersma (9/5): Prachtige grote hoge kamer midden in oude centrum Chania - Prachtige grote hoge kamer midden in oude centrum van Chania met groot bad en goede airco. Dagelijks schoonmaak,, nieuwe handdoeken. Kleine koelkast, uitzicht door zijraam
- Alexander (10/5): Perfect central stay in Chania - Perfect central location in Chania with the most unique room layout and comfortable beds, we would definitely stay here again! Street parking can be difficult to find
- Catalina (10/5): Crete was the holiday of our holidays, we would always return to Madonna del Mare. - The room is impeccable, perfect for spending the day there and relaxing. The Jacuzzi is definitely worth the price. The location is extremely convenient, within walking distance to restaurants and shops but not in the middle of the action. As in all of Greece, parking is possible on public roads, but it depends on availability. The parking lot is reserved for locals (which seemed logical to us), and although we were always able to park in designated areas, and the hotel warned us and helped us identify the parking spot, it's something to keep in mind in a country where the best way to get around is by car.
- Pauline (3/5): False advertising, unhygienic conditions - The location was nice. The room we reserved from the Madonna Del Mare, the Frida Khalo room, was not hygienically acceptable and the photos and descriptions on Booking.com are misleading and incomplete, (on TripAdvisor, and on their website too).
All the previous, glowing reviews must have been from travelers who stayed in another room, or maybe even another building. From talking to the manager, I understand they manage several.
When we got to the building, things looked immediately off. The sign in front of the building is covered in graffiti and not the one in the picture. There was debris strewn about the entry way, and it smelled very strongly of cat urine. (I know there are a lot of stray cats in Chania. However, we did not experience such an odor anywhere else we went in Greece.)
Once inside the room, we were met with a very strong smell of mildew and mold (and a large, dead beetle in the middle of the living room). We tried to locate the source of the smell, and found what appears to be a patch of black mold up in the corner of the ceiling in the living room, and mold in the shower. The smell is strongest in the closet — which is not like the photos — and we did not want I to leave our clothes in there. We contacted management via WhatsApp. The manager said, “Tomorrow housekeeping will check it.” I asked when, and he said, “11Am.” Later he texted again, “or later.” After a long day of travel, we reluctantly stayed the night.
We also found a very thick layer of grimy dust on the light fixtures, and a layer of dirt and human hair under the mattress in the bedroom. When we woke the next morning, we discovered that the shower doesn’t drain well — and maybe that is another source of the mildew smell.
We decided to find another hotel rather than wait for housekeeping. We did not believe a single visit from housekeeping could solve all the issues. In the end, Booking has issued me a credit for the remainder of our reservation — but I would rather have had an actual refund.
- Deborah (10/5): Thoroughly Enjoyable! - Loved the size of the time and the location. I actually thought I was booking onto a hotel, but the rooms were more like Airbnb without kitchen facilities. The room was serviced every day, but reception wasn't manned.
- Fabian (9/5): Superb - Interesting design central to everything Never saw anyone no welcome or how was your stay
- Toska (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place to be!
Great location in the old city and reachable to everything: bars, restaurants and sea.
Great interior and outside design. Perfect room service & great communication.
Wish to be back again!
- Neville (9/5): Superb - Comfortable, well designed and well situated in the old city. Great views over the Venetian harbour. Very little not to like, though the music from the tavernas below in the harbour was quite loud one of the nights we were there. It didn’t go on too late, so not a big problem.
- Andrew (6/5): Noisy — couldn’t sleep! - Overall the place was nice with a balcony facing the square by the harbor. However, there was loud music from the bar in the square every night and even after the music stopped the noise from the bar was loud. We didn’t sleep for 3 nights and left one night early. Also note that there is no staff onsite ever — this is more like a home rental without amenities than a hotel.
- Wagner (8/5): Very good -
- Joshua (9/5): Superb -
- Lucy (9/5): Superb - Very arty place, beautifully decorated and quite unique. The location was perfect
- Gretchen (9/5): Superb - Very close to waterfront but very quiet (in early March). Set in the midst of beautiful ruins. Comfortable bed. Parking was available on the street, but the hotel doesn't have any specific parking. Also, be aware that there is no front desk so there is no staff on-site. However, when we had difficulty checking in, a very pleasant and helpful person came over quickly to help. (Google maps is slightly off so double check the address!)
- Florentia (10/5): Great location, and wonderful atmosphere - It was clean and beautifully decorated. The bed mattress was amazing for my injured back! Def coming back! Can’t think of anything negative to say.
- James (10/5): Peaceful and charming room in a beautiful Crete town. - Beautiful suite in the remnants of a monastery just a few yards from the harbor. Quiet and elegant with a sitting room. Chania is a delightful town in the off season. Full of history in its old city. It is remote entry but easy to use. Contact with the host was by messaging. Not really negatives just not a traditional hotel.
- Vlachos (9/5): Superb -
- Korina (10/5): Exceptional - We got the room with the balcony and sea view and it was perfect.
Bed and pillows comfy, the room was very nicely decorated.
Staff was very attentive and available for any questions we had.
- Mariana (10/5): Very relaxing stay. - The property is situated in the centre of the town and has a wonderful sea view. Difficult to find a parking place.
- Chelsea (10/5): Exceptional - Location, design, decor/ambiance It was perfect! I loved the soaps in the shower, too
- Yannis (10/5): Very nice room with very beautiful view in the city center - Great room, greater location, greatest view :)
- Calle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marius (8/5): Very good -
- Lindsay (9/5): Fantastic location beautiful building. Tastefully decorated with attention to design and detail - Location
Architecture
Attention to detail Very small detail but could do with a small table lamp in the living area near the sofa bed.
- Peter (10/5): Fab - A beautiful exquisite boutique hotel.
Tastefully renovated with every attention to detail explored.
Very comfortable and very clean , just perfect. Nothing to dislike.
It's a perfect place to stay.
- Joanne (9/5): Superb - Great location, beautifully decorated. Big and very comfortable bed.
- Emil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Valerie (7/5): Good - Its very well located. Tastefully decorated spacious room. Bed is comfortable. There is no reception so you need to coordinate for check-in. There was a very bad odor at times coming out of the bathroom. The remote of the TVs didn’t work very well.
- Cody (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jowan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anastasia (8/5): It was a pleasant stay but a bit pricey for what it offers - It was a spacious and very clean room in a very good location. There is no 24hour reception available which could be a problem if you need assistance with storing the luggage after the check out. There was no breakfast included which would be nice and there were no balconies so we couldn’t place the wet towels anywhere.
For this price it would be nice to have a 24 hour service of reception. It’s should be listed as an Airbnb not a hotel.
- Dragos (10/5): We wish we could stay more - The location is located very close to the centre of the city. The balcony is directed towards the port so you can drink your coffee with a nice view. Also the location is part of an old monastery so you can get a feeling of the old architecture.
- Nicole (6/5): ok - great location. loved the building heritage. there was blood on bottom of our sheets.
the safe did not work
then when cleaners came they left the top sheet so we had to make the bed.
- miguel (10/5): - Location and clean
- Ibrahima (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gracynthia (10/5): - Beautiful property and very convenient location to Old Town. The one downside is parking. I read somewhere that the property had parking, but it turned out to not have any. We were lucky enough to find parking nearby when we arrived, but then we didn't want to drive anywhere after that for fear of losing our parking spot. Otherwise, everything with this hotel was great!
- Laura Jane (8/5): - The room was good, bed was comfy and it was nice to have the jacuzzi in there. The location was great because it was so close to the port and shops. Our room was ground floor directly onto the street so it was a little noisy with neighbours. The reception is only open when you organise with Renia over Whatsapp, so you need to plan on advance when you want to check-in and leave your luggage. Only negatives were some days our towels were taken but we weren't given any more so we didn't have hot tub towels and only one large towel between us and no reception to collect more from. We also found out that there was an occupied building nearby by anarchists that had recently been taken back. There were then protests outside the hotel and riot police around for days. Not the fault of the hotel but I can imagine that will be ongoing.
- Wendy (8/5): - The room itself was stunning in design and function. Lovely oasis in the heart of Chania! My only issue was finding the place. For some reason my maps app didn’t like the link sent and I do better with Apple Maps. But I was stressed, it was getting late etc. Manager met me upon arrival and was very kind and helpful and sites to see, gave me a map etc. also directed me to a nearby parking lot where I was able to park for free! Manager also clarified the actual address which helped because then I was able to input that into my preferred maps app and found my way back easily every time I ventured away. Overall I recommend this place for a fabulous stay!
- Eva (4/5): - The property has a small window with some sea view.the aircondition was set to a fixed temperature that did nothing for winter times so the house was cold. the fridge was leaking water out on the floor. there was only one key for two people.
- Fernando (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lam (8/5): - We went during the off season so they only inconvenience was not having 24/7 service. We just had to let them know what time we were arriving so there was someone at the front desk. Didn't have too much trouble finding the place and it was an easy walk to the main square. Our room didn't have the best view but again very minor issue.
- Lisa (9/5): As expected. - So close to the old town waterfront
- Ellie (9/5): Superb - Last minute stay booked at Madonna del Mere which was absolutely stunning. Easy check in, fantastic area and lovely decor
- Lisa (10/5): unforgettable apartment, beautiful views want to style my own place on this - Absolutely stunning a work of art how they incorporated the historic building all gorgeous
- Paz (8/5): Great jacuzzy - A well-appointed room that exceeded expectations. However, noise from outside could be heard, affecting the tranquility. The check-in and check-out policies were unclear, and a pre-booking verification is recommended. Despite these inconveniences, the room quality made it a worthwhile stay.
- Donald (10/5): Great hotel in Chania! - Stayed for 2 days. Hotel is perfectly located near the heart of Old Town Chania. AC is excellent, great water pressure, and the team at the hotel is top notch. The hotel itself is a converted historic building so each room is unique and charming. Love that our room had a living room and a separate bedroom. Would stay again and highly recommend!!
- Louise (8/5): Unique - Unique location and property in the old town, but quiet enough not to be disturbed by noise. Some quirky design features and furniture. There was no air con so very warm at night. The room had no balcony, which was clearly stated in the description but in the photo it looked like there was seating outside the apartment for drinking coffee etc. In reality there were no facilities for sitting in the common areas but this would have been nice. We could not get the coffee machine to work properly so went without both mornings (instructions needed maybe?)
- Youssef (9/5): Lovely and quiet apartment, great for people looking for a comfortable place by the center - The apartment is spacious, with a bedroom and a living room with plenty of space. The hotel is conveniently located in the center and is walking distance to the town of Chania with all the shops and restaurants. The place is quiet and really comfortable. We even had a parking spot right outside the apartment.
- Zalika (10/5): - Beautiful Hotel ! So unique, and close to all the local shops and restaurants.
- Andriana (10/5): Exceptional - We originally stayed at this accommodation in 2018, and loved it so much that we stayed here again for this trip. Despite it being 5 years later, the accommodation was exactly as we remembered and had been maintained immaculately. I cannot recommend this place enough if you are visiting Chania. Location is absolutely perfect!!!!! located in old town, but on a quiet street which we always found parking on for our car. Inside is spacious, clean and decorated beautifully. Daily cleaning service provided and tea/coffee provided in the apartment which is a bonus! We would stay here again and again :) Nothing!
- Michelle (9/5): Superb - Absolutely stunning Breakfast should be available
- Katarzyna (10/5): Outstanding - I loved the place, its design and location. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Everything was very clean. The place is amazing Nothing
- Emmanuel (9/5): Excellent experience - Fantastic property in a great location
- Alex (10/5): - I absolutely loved this property! The location was ideal for walking to restaurants and local bars. The room was one of the most unique rooms I’ve ever stayed in. It was beautiful and clean, and had a nice view of the port. The staff reached out to me ahead of time to ensure that they were there to show us to our room. It’s a lovely boutique hotel with so much history. I would definitely stay there again!
- alissa ann (10/5): - Madonna Del Mare was a pleasant surprise upon opening the door. The room was beautiful. It was spotless. The bed was very comfortable. The AC was cold on the blistering hot 100 degree days. The location is perfect and walking to the shops and restaurants of old town takes only minutes. Parking was a bit of a challenge but that’s to be expected in this location. The front desk staff provided directions on where to attempt parking and we eventually found a spot that was not too far away.
- Helge (8/5): Great location - Great location Nothing
- Terri (10/5): - Great property. Well appointed. Website pictures don't do it justice. The staff is very helpful. Very close walking to shops, harbor and good restaurants. The only issue is parking is a nightmare.
- Osama (10/5): Exceptional - Well renovated structure with considering the historical value of the building.
- Laura (10/5): wonderful - Loved the location in old town. Room was large & balcony with sea view was excellent. The check-in process
- Natalie (10/5): An idyllic escape from London life into a greek haven; amazing restaurants and scenery at your feet. - This hotel is set in an absolutely STUNNING location. Our room had dreamy balcony views across the port into the sea and of old town. Gorgeous sunrises and tranquil vibes. Helpful staff 10/10 experience. The only thing was that we couldn't contact anyone to store our case in reception on our last day after we had checked out. A minor detail that really didn't detract from our experience - it was incredible from start to finish.
- Guy (10/5): outstanding once check-in done - large room, well furnished checking in process needs to be explained better
- Brandee (10/5): Great place! - The Madonna del Mare is a sweet spot, close to everything. Our room was spacious, clean and comfy. Our hosts were thoughtful and informative. Great view from our room!
- Pande1is (10/5): Exceptional - Everything.
- Abiola (9/5): Superb -
- Alissa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Milda (9/5): Superb - the room was fantastic, great view of the sea, perfect location near the harbor, easy access to restaurants and shopping.
- Adrian (10/5): Exceptional - The Best Property in the Town
- Jane (8/5): We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the property to friends. - Location and ambiance. Bathroom could do with an update
- Michael (9/5): Superb - Fantastic rooms No Breakfast but you don't really need it...so many cafes in Chania right outside your door
- Amanda (6/5): wet smell to the room :( - it was a good location. the complimentary water s everyday are nice. the AC went to 17C. cool staircase under glass floor in the bedroom. slippers. daily housekeeping. easy checkout the #1 complaint I have is the musty/ broccoli/ wet rock smell. no matter how long the AC is on it is awful. maybe because it was 80-90f while we were there? luckily it was confined to half of our room.
there is room for improvement in the place: bubbling paint, shower door coming off on top, smell. there was a balcony, we could only figure out how to get half the door/ window open so it was a tight squeeze. I read in other reviews there was a breakfast that was partnered with this place- there was none.
no concierge. it’s truly more of an Air Bnb than a hotel. recommendations weren’t very helpful. no Netflix set up on the tv.
- Brad (10/5): Very enjoyable and great location! - Very cute and as pictured. Could have used a bigger window looking out to the sea.
- Dina (10/5): - Very clean! Staff helpful. Area was beautiful.
- Douglas (10/5): Cool place - Very unique building and interior. Enjoyed our 2 night stay once we were able to contact the manager with the help of a resident in the building.
