Guest Reviews
- Maggie (7/5): - the staff is very kind.
- Wendy (6/5): The place is tired and the rooms need a bit of a tidy up - The price seemed good. It was somewhat tired.
The sofa bed in our room had no mattress and we had requested 2 beds. We were given another room but with only a double bed. 2 single females.
- Jarrod (8/5): - Handy location for what I needed It was fine!
- Evan (8/5): -
- Carole (3/5): A very disappointing stay. We stayed in the studio unit a few years ago and that was lovely. - This motel is in a good spot, handy to Rangiora restuarants and shops. Warm unit. The room had no character, nothing on the walls. It could have had a coffee table, the lounge room was large but empty. The crockery and cutlery looked like they were bought from a second hand shop, nothing matched. Very disappointing.
- susan (1/5): Won't be returning. - The staff member I spoke withe barely spoke English and could not help me with my problem at all.
- Richard (2/5): Don't stay at Rangiora Lodge Motel. It's poorly maintained and has cleanliness issues. - It's close to the town centre. This is the worst accommodation I have stayed in anywhere in the world.
There is such a difference between what is advertised on Booking.com and the actual state of the motel that I took the operators to the Disputes Tribunal for a refund. I received a settlement of around 50% of what I paid.
The Rangiora Lodge Motel’s website, which links to Booking.com, and the photos for the motel on Booking.com contain misleading information including:
- The owners are not ‘Sam and Max’ - these are the previous owners. Public records confirm the motel is currently operated by Jatin Chopra and Deepak Sharma,
- The photos (motel website & Booking.com amongst others) show different fittings and furniture that are of a much higher quality than those actually provided, the photos also show well maintained grounds when in reality the grounds are in poor condition - the misleading photos appear to be from 2016 posted by the previous owners on Facebook,
- The rooms are not ‘well appointed’ - the fittings, furniture and kitchen items are extremely basic,
- Instead of the couches shown on the websites there are barely padded, very uncomfortable, waiting room benches,
- Both the motel website & Booking.com state there was Sky/satellite channels - there only appeared to be terrestrial freeview,
- The TV did not work and when I requested something be done, nothing was done to remedy this.
I spoke to some other guests who confirmed their rooms were just as bad, including poor cleanliness.
When checking out I said I wanted a part refund due to the issues outlined above and asked to speak to the owners. I was told I had to email Booking.com. They ignored all communications from me via this and other channels. Booking.com also sought a response from the motel but also received no response.
- Mciver (9/5): Lovely warm quiet and comfortable, central walking distance and driving distance to everything. - It was comfortable and nice and warm and quiet, had everything we needed and an excellent price.
Nice and central for us The couch is starting to come appart at the back and there were people having a few drinks in the garage behind our designated carport, this didn’t bother us and they were quiet but as we drove into our carport one of the group flipped us the bird before shutting the garage. A bit unnecessary to make that gesture but I certainly wouldn’t judge this place based on one rude person who was probably not associated to the owners who were lovely and very helpful when we discovered we had left a jacket behind.
He made sure we got it back and we are very thankful🥰
- Maree (1/5): Will not be back to stay. Do not recommend this place to anyone. - Location was great. Close to town center and restaurants. When we first entered the room it stunk. Had to open the doors to try to air it out. Unit was very dirty. Bathroom was appalling. I wiped a small ledge and it was filthy. There is hair stuck to the front of the toilet and the walls. There looked like urine marks down the front of the toilet. Water marks down the walls. Dirt built up in corners. We were only given 1 shower towel each and 1 hand towel. No facecoths .... no dishcloth or teatowel. Thr hot tap is broken and moves. The fridge had mould inside. Bed had the roll together thing happening. The front reception area looks more like a messy storage room. The whole complex is very run down and out dated. This is a very sub standard motel. Would not recommend this place to anyone.
- Schwellnus (10/5): -
- Timothy (10/5): Convenient, roomy, very helpful. -
- Tara And Nathan (8/5): Perfect place if you just need somewhere to sleep at night after being out and about all day! - Comfy bed, good location Old fashioned could do with a room update
- Cindy (3/5): - Not a lot really. Cutlery draw & draws in the kitchen were dirty. Outside the unit there was a lot of weeds very un kept. The seating in the living area was very uncomfortable but was clean. Bed was very comfortable & clean. The whole place could do with a makeover.
- Gavin (5/5): While you get what you pay for, a certain standard of cleanliness and modern facilities are expected - Beds were comfortable. Clean sheets and towels. Location was very handy to town The room was very worn and not very well maintained. Needs a whole refresh.
The facilities were not clean and the bathroom was dirty
- Trudy (8/5): Met my needs - Availability, spacious, warm Tv didn’t work, no option to swap it
Mould around window sill
Only kitchen chair was not stable
Strange combination of utensils plates etc eg one bowl, 4 cups, no teaspoon - just odd
- Glenn (10/5): - Everything
- Henry (9/5): -
- Samantha (7/5): -
- Joankb (7/5): It was OK. - Teabags weren't supplied on our arrival.
- Peter (7/5): Great location, friendly staff -
- Vicki (5/5): Location great bed ok but damp and very tired decor - Location Receptionist on the phone when I arrived and still continued on call whilst showing me the room and answering my questions. Very rude!
Very tired decor Double bed with a single electric blanket which wasn’t even plugged in!
The room smelt VERY damp which was unpleasant
Toiletries in bathroom or lack of. No body wash or hair conditioner and only just enough shampoo for one wash.
Due to the dampness the toilet paper was also damp.
Single bed had an electric blanket which when I plugged in and turned on did not work😕
- Phillippa (8/5): - Handy to amenities. Good value for money
- Nerys (5/5): - Friendly staff, reasonable facilities. Place seemed a bit run down and was missing some essentials e.g. soap in the bathroom and no teatowel put out. Random food and clothing items left in the room from previous visitors. Mould on the net curtains.
- aiden (10/5): -
- aiden (10/5): -
- aiden (10/5): -
- Gread (1/5): Terrible, only stayed one of two nights booked - Nothing Everything. Unclean, untidy, did not feel safe, no staff support when concerns voiced, room did not look like photos in the slightest.
- Jase-Ollie (10/5): - Friendly staff.
Tidy and comfy room.
- Rob Lorden (6/5): - A bit tired looking with some maintenance needed. Fridge freezer compartment had not been defrosted for months and we could not use it.
- Bruce (1/5): The mirrors were filthy, generally dirty, no facecloths, not enough towels. Lounge area barren with hard uncomfortable s -
- Stefan (7/5): -
- Sally (1/5): Walked in and just left - Nothing Had booked 4 nights. Was the most disgusting motel I’ve ever walked into. We didn’t stay. Was dirty and smelt of cigarettes or something!!
The office was a shambles on arrival which
Gave a good indication of the rooms.
- alexandra (8/5): Good value for money. Not a luxury, but warm and comfortable, perfect for a short stay. - Spacious warm unit with a very comfortable bed. The unit is secluded and private. Outdoor area where you can smoke . Generally clean, but some of the cupboards were untidy (but we were not there to inspect cupboards, so no complains whatsoever). There were no kitchen towels, so I could not dry dishes (again not a big deal - I am sure I could have asked for them, but we arrived late and did not want to disturb anyone).
- Jocelyn (5/5): - Beds were ok The location was quiet
We were out all day and evening visiting family so only slept there
It was suitable for that and our family were just 5 mins away so it worked for us. It was budget accommodation Photos made it look better than what we found No teatowels or dishcloth
Very old bathrooms and kitchen and hot water taps often didn't work
All the doors inside needs a good repaint
But for a sleep and out quick for the day and night it was ok.
- Christine (4/5): Disappointing - Location Tired, old & uncomfortable . Curtains hanging off rails. Paint scratched . Light bulbs fell out of lamp. Old plugs. Very very tired building. Gardens a mess. Used as Govt.Emergency housing tenants . Over flowing rubbish bins outside. Lack of tea towels & condiments . Three tea bags for 3days / 2 night stay. Large spider crawling on ceiling. Lack of Smart TV. Dark depressing out shower!
- Jacqui (3/5): - The sheets were clean Run down, uncared for and overpriced
- Marie (1/5): Black mould on door frames and mouldy shower - Location The mould and rotten towels lying in court yard. But mostly mould
- Nikoya (1/5): -
- Theunis (10/5): -
- Lindsay (5/5): -
- Ben (10/5): -
- JOHN (3/5): - Only the bed The place needs alot of attention, but I can tell by staff it not happening.
- Barry (8/5): Value for money. - Large unit, seperate bedroom and kitchen. Old school design but improvements being done. Would stay there again. Needed more milk in the fridge at arrival and there were no face cloths in the room.
- Gavin (7/5): - The bed was comfortable and the room was large. Our room seemed to be quite dated. Shower/ toilet dsarea nee to be brought into this century.
- Richard (2/5): - Not a lot to like The apartment is run down and nothing like photos. Out side has weeds everywhere and not kept tidy.
Power points in bedroom and lounge don't work. No light in shower. Would not recommend at all.
- Lydia (9/5): - Amazing staff.
- Rosemary (10/5): - Really love staying here. Quiet, safe, spacious and very comfortable bed. The new manager is so lovely Leaving
- Kevin (4/5): Do not recommend - Nice sized room There is a gap where the door handle is so you can see straight outside.
Rubbish was found around the room.
Heat pump didn’t work.
Took over 20 minutes to get hold of anyone at reception for checking in and again when checking out.
Managers were agreeing late at night with high pitched screams.
- Rosemary (10/5): - Everything is sooo amazing and I will be back. Leaving
- Rosemary (10/5): Excellent accomodation Rangiora Lodge Motel - I love staying here. It's so comfortable and peaceful.Bed is super comfy, shower is awesome and fully set up kitchen also in the unit. Heaps of room and very cozy and warm. The new Manager is so lovely and we have become friends. I've stayed in many motels etc all over the world and hospitality is my speciality.highly recommend. THANKS 🙏 Leaving 😭
- Rosemary (10/5): -
- Lance (2/5): AVOID - Great location. The room was large but that's where it ended! 1 Bedroom Studio- Room 7 has very a musty/mouldy smell that we could not dissipate. There were signs of mould on the window frames, shower and the hot tap in the bathroom was loose. The grounds were also unkept and certainly did not look like the photos.
We booked this fairly last minute. We did notice the relatively low review, but with such a convenient location we just needed a place to sleep and leave our bags, so gave it a try….. But it needs to be Habitable!! The smell and air quality felt very unhealthy. Lesson learnt with not delving down into the individual reviews which seem to have many similar poor experiences
We paid for 4 nights but ended staying just 1, and now find ourselves struggling through the refund process with booking.com, for a motel that really shouldn’t even be advertised on the booking.com site. The staff also seemed pretty unhelpful hiding behind booking.com booking.
- Daniel (4/5): - It was a good location It smells like smoke in the room and the TV didn’t work
- Sue (3/5): I was tired after a long day driving, needed to rest, bed was ok. Definitely NOT value for money, - Supplied own breakfast. Good location Office bell wasn't answered, had to ring mobile number, lady arrived in pyjamas at 645 pm, friendly, showed me to my room. Unit had musty smell, reasonably clean, badly needs redecorating. Grounds unkempt, a lot of weeding tidying up needed.
- Fiona (3/5): A very dated, run down motel. - Location was great The units are very dated, dark interior with poor lighting. The bathroom was very old, leaking, loose fixtures. No kitchen teatowels or dish cloth for washing dishes/wiping benches. A very large commercial sized container of budget soak left on the bathroom sink, for soap/shower use.
- Trevor (1/5): We found the room and facilities to be in poor condition. We couldn’t get the TV to work and the shower was in atrocious - It was located close to restaurants It was very run down and appeared unkempt
- Rebecca (8/5): - Location Not very clean
- Damien (1/5): Revolting! - Absolutely nothing!. Absolutely everything !
The first room we were offered smelled of mold and a strong curry aroma.
The Shower was in very poor condition and dirty
Bed old and very used, bedding ok
Toilet old and stained bowl
Old carpet, room was under their house converted to a bed sit.
Second and third room we were offered exactly the same very poor standard.
Lawns around unit not mowed and weeded probably several days to weeks.
We arrived at about 6pm and rooms had not been cleaned, rubbish and dirty linen still sitting outside rooms.
The duty manager was nice at first but as soon as I raised issues about the rooms was very short and snappy and then eventually rude. At this point I told him this was a dump and we left
- richardeL2698GS (2/5): The worst motel I have stayed in anywhere in the world. - This is the worst motel I have stayed in anywhere in the world.
The Rangiora Lodge Motel’s website and the photos for the motel on Booking.com contain a number of false representations including:
- the owners are not ‘Sam and Max’ - these are apparently the previous owners,
- the rooms are not ‘well appointed’ - the fittings, furniture and kitchen items are extremely basic,
- the photos (motel website & Booking.com) show different fittings and furniture that are of a much higher quality and the photos show well maintained grounds when in reality the grounds are in poor condition (photos of the actual state of the motel & some Booking.com photos attached ),
- the couches advertised on the websites were not there and instead there were barely padded, very uncomfortable, waiting room benches,
- despite the motel website & Booking.com stated there was Sky/satellite channels - there only appears to be terrestrial freeview (can't confirm as the TV wasn't working and despite asking for it to be fixed, nothing was done).
When I sought to get a part refund when checking out I was hung up on when I called the phone number stuck the door at the locked and empty reception.
The motel isn't answering its messages through Booking.com, or by phone, and didn't respond to Booking.com when they contacted the motel (Booking.com call centre staff were very helpful).
I spoke to some other guests who confirmed their rooms were just as bad, including poor cleanliness.
- Paul (8/5): - Lovely and quiet. Spacious room. Beautiful ho
t shower
- Cynthia (3/5): -
- Amber (2/5): -
- Rodney (1/5): Do not stay here. It is dirty and not worth the money. - Nothing It was dirty, not clean, only one towel for three day. Rooms were not cleaned during the stay.
- Laurie (1/5): Couldn't imagine what it would be like staying there. Shouldn't be allowed to offer it - Not applicable This was the worst motel i have booked. We arrived to find mouldy curtains, no toilet door, no kitchen sink and was generally a very unpleasant. We refused to stay there so now we are now $120 out of pocket.
- Diane (9/5): - Good location for what we needed Needs to clean up back section and no face clothes. Small tea towel for dishes,
- Kim (2/5): - The staff was friendly. The shower didn't work. It was filthy. Rubbish under the beds. The lounge suite was hard as rock. The dishes weren't clean and it smelt musty. Beds 0very uncomfortable
- Willie (8/5): Was a place to crash. Very very old and tired. - Convienence Needs a bloody good scrub and some new light bulbs, plus some new kitchen and bathrooms
- Tracey (4/5): - Location handy for work room smelt alot musty
Shower tiles broken
All kitchen facilities available no kitchen sink
For the price I paid very disappointed 😞
- chapman-cohen (1/5): -
- Lyell (9/5): -
- Peter (4/5): Poor cleaning standards mean I would NOT stay here again. - Central to town. Walking distance to hotel for evening meal. Very quiet property. Sheets and towels appeared fresh and clean, probably from a linen service. The room had cobwebs in the bathroom and bedrooms, dead insects on the floor of the bathroom, toilet and kitchen. A breakfast bowl in the cupboard had spots of dried food on it. On searching for a tea towel to dry dishes, I only found a small square cloth which appeared stained. The lounge furniture was very hard and not comfortable. Lack of Tv chanels - no sport or movie chanels. There was a dirty (used) ashtray on the outdoor table. Outdoors gardens and lawn were overgrown and poorly maintained. Very old buildings in need of renovation especially the shower.
- Debbie (10/5): Easy to find, quiet location, short walk to the centre of town, perfect accommodation. - In every way Rangiora Lodge motel was the perfect place to stay, I would thoroughly recommend it to all! Also appreciated the selection of free books in the office. Lovely staff too. Faultless property, nothing at all to dislike.
- Warrren (2/5): Just as well we are not fussy - Location was good. Nice to park our car under cover Kitchen and bathroom smelled bad Furnishings are very basic and worn
- Peter (8/5): -
- Constant (8/5): - Easy to book. Good location. Not sure
- Gail (6/5): - Close to where I needed to be to visit Charles Upham rest home. Shelves etc could of been cleaner, small stove work better.
- Rowan (6/5): Absolutely value for money ! A short wall to the city centre , so clean and tidy - So close to the city centre, we easily walked to town as we didn’t have a rental car , and he rooms where perfect so clean and tidy the staff so happy to help and made us feel at home . I definitely will stay there on every occasion from now on. The price was a bonus The only thing that I felt would need looking at is the couch in our room is was a little firm and not comfortable to sit on , this being said it didn’t bother us at as we only stayed there not sat around all day In the unit
- David (6/5): As above it was disappointing compared to photos and not a lot of service given until we had to ask. - No cleaning of the room over 8 days. Had to ask to get fresh towels etc. Disappointed as needs maintenance and doesn’t look like photos at all. Parking was an issue as well. Rubbish bins were all full and not emptied in the 8 days we stayed. Nothing like expected sadly.
- Janet (3/5): - Good location, a comfortable bed and warm Uncomfortable couches more like benches
Low pressure shower
No light in toilet
- Tony (3/5): To expensive for what you get - Old and dated, grounds were unkempt. Over priced
- Donna (3/5): Not enjoyable - The location was good for our visit. I have a list of complaints and I will not go back to this place
- Mackenzie (6/5): Lovely - How big the room was. There's wasn't a lot of parking room.
- Jackie (6/5): - The location was perfect for walking to and from town. We didn't have a,TV that went in our room. The cold tap didn't turn on and the shower drain was blocked so only had short showers. So in the end we were upgraded to a one apartment room.
- Annette (1/5): - Nothing Shower disgusting all tiles broken Gardens terrible . Didn't see any staff. Chair broken had to get a chair from outside . That was not clean. Laundry was absolutely filthy and untidy.
- Margaret (7/5): A comfortable stay. - Kitchen needs a bit of a spruce up.
Lighting was very dim in the front room.
- Luke (1/5): Bad -
- Peter (5/5): Satisfactory -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Yes we would come back and stay here - N/a Nice and clean and tidy and a good playground as well
- Emma (1/5): Bad - We arrived at the motel, to find the receptionist tell us that our booking had been cancelled due to a leak in the room. we were not contacted prior to this and they did not have any other rooms avaliable for us. we are from out of town and had no way of getting back. We were effectively left stranded, and the only option they gave us was to try find us a hotel room in Christchurch, which was not relevant as we needed to be in Rangiora for the night. it has now been nearly a week later and we have still had no refund.
- Jason (7/5): - Comfortable beds Bathroom not so good
- Amanda (1/5): Upsetting, distressing, disgusting, not fit for human consumption at a time when the four of us were already in a stress - Nothing, it was filthy, mouldy, unkempt, rubbish everywhere, solid freezer box with old food glued to the insides, toilet cistern that ran constantly, mouldy bed linen, our feet stuck to the filthy carpet, open units, rust holes in the shower, disgustingly filthy oven, ripped curtains, the list is endless. How booking.com can put their name to this is beyond comprehension. It was appalling and they should be ashamed and embarrassed. See above, honestly it was just disgusting and caused so much stress as we had booked two nights so we could attend a family funeral.
- Julie (5/5): - Location Facilities were rundown
- Marin (1/5): So bad I walked out and drove back to Christchurch and paid for another hotel. - Nothing I walked out and asked for refund Room was in horrible condition . Hole in wall in toilet, rust in shower . Paint bubbling and pealing off wall . I couldn't stay there so I drove back to Christchurch and paid for another hotel . Would rather lose my money than stay there .
- gypsy039 (7/5): well located in Rangiora - Well located for our purposes, 1 unit had 2 bedrooms and the other a large family room with 2 beds and a sofa, , good kitchens in units , shower ensuite , roomy , good undercover parking, close to Rangiora city centre and 25 minutes to Christchurch city ,or Cust and Oxford in the other direction - really nice welcome from the host when we arrived. Small onsite playground and picnic tables . its a bit dated but as we only needed it for a base to sleep in it served its purpose and we were overall very happy.
- Nanette (1/5): Disgusting and not worth the money people are expected to pay before they arrive. - Absolute nothing I stayed there a few years ago and it was lovely. It has deteriorated beyond recognition. The gardens are so badly neglected and it is obvious that no maintenance has been carried out in a very long time
- Jarrod (2/5): Frustrating - Comfortable Bed Staff not willing to help with getting a proper GST invoice or printing a 2 page document. After asking both office staff and the cell number that txt me. Still no reply
- Paul (1/5): Too expensive, obviously new operators, totally substandard - Nothing Totally inadequate, was so bad I moved to another motel after day 1 in a six day booking. No subsequent communication from the motel staff either. Shower was filthy, soap and shampoo dispensers were both empty, no mirror in bathroom, missing lightbulbs, no sink for dishes (except bathroom), no security stays on windows…
