Guest Reviews
- Tetsuhiko (7/5): -
- Frank (9/5): A very familiar stay. - The host has welcomed us warmly. We got assistance in any way. His shuttle service was just great: At the start of the Golden Week we managed to get into he first line for entrance to the Toshogu Shrine.

- heerlijk ontbijt
- Louise (10/5): -
- Michael (10/5): - Nice and quiet away from the crowds but close enough to see everything. Owners were amazing and went out of their way many times. Highly recommend.
- Grace (9/5): - My partner and I had a lovely stay, the owner was so welcoming and hospitable. It was raining when we arrived and he kindly helped us dry our wet shoes and lent us an umbrella when we went out to dinner. The facilities are exactly as described and our room was very clean. Great value for money.
- Xinyu (10/5): Great experience - Great experience with all the cute things. As a women solo Traveller, i feel super safe and relaxed and cosy when i stay in the hotel.
With the kind reminder and a gift of warming patch from the owner, i am well prepared for a visit during a cold and big rainy day.
The wife of owner makes the AMAZING cookie in the world. the cookies are far more good than any cookies that i bought ever.
I am a light sleeper. I sleep super well in this family hotel during the stay. A-li-ga-do.
- Amit (10/5): Wonderful guesthouse & hosts - Lovely old guesthouse just a short walk from town (~20-25 mins through pretty, quiet streets). Wonderful hosts took special care of us. This was the perfect place to meet our needs for Nikko.
- NS (9/5): - Food and hospitality was very good. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. They were also helping in pickup and drop of their customers.
- Louise (10/5): We highly recommend a stay at Pension L’escale. - The property was very clean and tidy. Amazing amenities that were very comfortable.
Only a short walk to town and the Onsen. The Property owner was only to happy to drop you to town. The Staff were very friendly and accommodating they looked after our every need. The meals were first class prepared by an in house chef and the food service was amazing.
- rebekah (10/5): -
- alain (9/5): Relaxing - Very kind! Extra pickup and drop off
Great bath , private
Vraiment personnel super
- Déborah (8/5): - Very nice place with great owner, very helpful
- Kathrin (9/5): -
- Ure (8/5): Enjoyable and the scenery is great. - We were there in early November and the autumn colours were fantastic with surrounding mountains and ravenes. You need a car to get around as L'escale is part way up a steep hill. It was nice to be away from the tourist run. The accommodation is older style with a European feel, and had the softest towels we had in the 6 weeks we were in Japan. The staff were very helpful with the luggage and the parting hug set it apart for all the hotels. The hot water coming on at 7am.
- Dianna (10/5): Cosy homely and comfortably warm . The owner turned in the heater in the afternoon to make us comfy - The old world homeliness of the place Upstairs being elderly but the owner kindly and happily assisted with luggage! Even Gave us a gift of hand warmers when we left! Very friendly small hotel
- natalie (10/5): - Extremely clean, basic accomodation, in a great location. The host family is extremely helpful and speak English. You can tell they take great pride in their establishment. They went out of their way to ensure I had an enjoyable stay. I highly recommend this pension for your stay in Nikko.
- Julien (9/5): Omotenashi - Le personnel était adorable ! Très réactif et parlant très bien anglais ! Rien
- Raymond (10/5): Imagining becomes reality - It is in a beautiful setting. The hosts are outstanding. The breakfasts and dinners are exquisite. We can't say enough wonderful things about the quality of the stay. The hosts are so thoughtful and kind. Stay and make sure you include the meals in your stay. The hosts, the place and the food is the highlight of our trip. I wish we could have stayed longer!
- karin (9/5): We had a great visit . - Warm welcome , really clean , caring Host and family. Home cooked food was delicious.
- Hans (10/5): Perfect location - Excellent service, very good food, shuttle service to temples and station, friendly staff, Japanese bath free available
- ERIC (10/5): Vraiment parfait - Le cottage. Rien
- Nienke (6/5): - Locatie goed. Op loopafstand van 3 restaurants, wel vooraf reserveren. Personeel is aardig en behulpzaam. Voor ons te ouderwetse sfeer. Hele muffe kamer door slechte ventilatie. Keihard bed en hoofd kussen.
- Aleksandra (10/5): - Obiekt posiada prywatny Onsen , z którego warto skorzystać !
Właściciele bardzo mili i pomocni , bardzo dobre śniadania
- Iraida (6/5): - The staff were welcoming and attentive. The location is quiet and peaceful, and we had a nice green view out the window. Our room was clean (minus the bathroom) and the guest house overall was clean and tidy. The room was very outdated, which I knew to expect, but the bathroom had extensive mold, which was disappointing.
The distance from the train station and main streets was inconvenient, but that's on me for underestimating it.
- Gautier (8/5): -
- Valentina (10/5): Viaggio in Giappone - Super gentili e accoglienti
Molto buona la colazione
Camera e bagno molto puliti
Olía mucho a humedad.
- Lang (10/5): -
- Julien (8/5): Very good -
- Samuel (10/5): Kaz was a great host who went out of his way to make sure we had a great stay. Would recommend a visit! - Great, cute royokan a little outside of the center of nikko
- Ramiro (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was amazing! Lovely house and the owner was the sweetest person ever. I thought the place was a bit far away from the main area of Nikko but we loved a good hike through the forest and finish at the temples and shrines. And the owner offered us a ride to the station when we were leaving.
Awesome place.
- Joanne (7/5): The property had a old world charm and hosts were lovely and breakfast was great. - The breakfast was excellent and the hosts were so welcoming, we had a car and could park onsite which was great. There was a very good place to eat within walking distance for dinners. The rooms was a little dark and we had to be out of the room during the day which was fine as we were busy however on a bad weather day that can be a little tough.
- Yvonne (5/5): Good value for money. - The owner was lovely. So friendly and helpful. Didn't like the decor. Really could do with an update.
Location was not good, too far from town, couldn't really walk back at night.
- Lucas (8/5): Good for short stay - Very nice staff, nice breakfast
- Thomas (7/5): Overall great! - The owner is fantastic and gave us rides to and from the station (~7min ride). He was kind and explained things thoroughly on check in so there were no surprises. He asks us to be out of the rooms 10a-4p to clean. He was very respectful of our belongings. There is a men's toilet and women's toilet upstairs, and a bath/shower/sink downstairs for everyone. The pension/boarding-style house is well known to the community as "L'escale" and has a good reputation in Nikko. Most rooms are as spacious as the pictures show. Unfortunately, our room barely fit 3 beds and felt very cramped in the end. I believe this is the result of adjusting a 2-bed room into a 3-bed room. I am thankful accommodations were made to allow us to stay, but it was definitely shocking to open the door to our room to such a cramped space.
- Phansa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ariel (10/5): Amazing! 10 out of 10 - Kas was AMAZING! Wonderful hospitality! Went the extra mile to make sure we were well taken care of! I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in Nikko. Bathrooms were huge and had large tubs for bathing. Kas and his wife speak very good English so it made communicating easy. No complaints whatsoever.
- Philip (10/5): One of the best places I’ve ever stayed. - This is an exceptional place to stay in Nikko. The room was basic but had everything I needed and was very comfortable. The owner and his wife are amazing. They were so kind to me during my stay giving me advice, taking me to the station and even giving me some warming pads as it was unusually cold while I was there. The breakfasts and dinners are delicious and highly recommended.
- Alexander (10/5): Great hotel - I had a fantastic stay at this hotel! The vintage-style decor gave it a charming and elegant atmosphere. My room was exceptionally clean, spacious, and well-maintained, making for a very comfortable experience. The highlight, however, was the staff—extremely hospitable, friendly, and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure a pleasant stay. Highly recommended!
- Šárka (8/5): Very good - Very sympathetic owners, appreciated tea in the room.
- Kriti (9/5): Lovely and memorable - The hotel is close to Tobu Nikko and JR Nikko station. It is a Japanese style hotel and the owners of the hotel are incredibly warm and lovely people who ensured we had a comfortable stay. I and my family are vegetarians. They accommodated our food preferences and prepared a FANTASTIC meal.
- Eileen (10/5): Wonderful! - Very clean. The staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. It was a bit far from the sightseeing area.
- Luca (9/5): Superb - The owners, Fujita San and his wife, are wonderful host and people. You feel at home from the first moment you enter the door and don't want to leave. I booked originally 2 nights only but I took a 3rd spontaneously because I felt really welcomed. They brought me with them to a lantern festival 1 hour from Nikko and offered me the experience. Two people who do their job with passion and each customer is important. I loved the concept of the small pension because you are part of the business, not just a number. The accomodation is maybe a bit out of date but very clean, that's what matters to me. You can reach by bus from Tobu Nikko station (line 2D) but there are not so much trips, however for me that I don't mind walking, I have done also on foot, about 30 mins
- Samson (9/5): Superb -
- Aidan (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our stay in Nikko.
Nikko is the best place in all of Japan and pension L'escale is the best place to stay at.
The owners were lovely and very kind. They gave us a lift to the station with our bags and even little good luck souvenirs for our journey.
You can tell the place is looked after and the owners are passionate about their business and exploring Nikko.
We also borrowed snow shows for our January walk to the marshlands.
Hopefully I will get to stay here again! Leaving Nikko.
3 days was not enough.
- Bryan (10/5): Great staff and excellent food. - The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The owner/chef made excellent dishes and pastries (and I am a professional chef, so take that into consideration in this assessment). I’ve been to Michelin star restaurants that weren’t as good.
- Yu (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tan (10/5): Most enjoyable stay - Kazumichi Fujita San and his family are great hosts. They are very friendly and helpful. Fujita San gave us some hot packs for our sightseeing because the weather had turned cold that day.
Night before our checkout, Fujita San also offered to drive us to the station. But we didn't want to trouble them, because knowing they were busy with managing their business. On check out day, we walked to the station. Fujita was on his way back to the hotel. He spotted us on the roadside and insisted on sending us to the station. He told us that his sister texted him that we had just left the hotel.
We were surprised that they even packed japanese souvenir snacks for our checkout.
We felt so blessed to stay in this hotel with such hospitality. It would be wonderful if we could communicate in japanese to express our gratitude and thankfulness for such such a great stay. Nothing
- Alateras (10/5): Wonderful place to stay. Such kind hosts - Rooms are comfortable and bathroom was great. The staff are incredibly kind driving us to the station the next morning and helping with any questions we had. Would definitely stay here again. Nothing
- Robert (10/5): Great place - Delightful quaint and quiet pension. Exceptional service from the hosts who went over and above to ensure we had an enjoyable trip to Nikko. They were really knowledgeable of their area and gave very good advice to ease our sightseeing. Appreciated the lifts for our sightseeing, and the gifts given to us. Thank you very much. Nothing
- Alon (10/5): I enjoyed my stay a lot - Great rooms, and the owner is very nice
He offered to pick me up from the station and back Loved it
- GILBERTO (10/5): - Made me feel at home.
- Michael (10/5): - The service was excellent and very hospitable. The room was clean and comfortable.
- Morgane (8/5): Kindest host - Really comfortable stay and exceptional host, very kind, goes out of his way to help. Welcomed me with delicious ice cream and gave me a cute gift when I left. Thanks for everything!!
- Kesetzi (10/5): Exceptional - Very clean. Friendly, smiling, polite and helpful people . Nice place to enjoy the beautiful nature of Nikko.
- Eibhlin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bundit (8/5): Very good - Owner is very very good, he is very friendly and provide the exceed service quality. Feel like we stay with our friend's house. It may not have very good facility same as the hotel but it's good enough as we stay in the home
- Shaniya (8/5): Very good - It’s cozy and comfortable, kind staff who was helpful:)
- Heather (9/5): Great place to stay near Nikko! - We were so grateful to have such warm and welcoming hosts for our trip! It was an older place but very cozy. They were very kind and very helpful - some of the best hosts we had while in Japan. We'd love to go back some day.
- Sze (7/5): Good - Had a nice warm breakfast with omelettes, salad and bread. Would need booking.com to have more options by including meal plan.
- Aniket (8/5): Very good - Japanese style It’s more than 1 Km from Toby-niko
- Margaret (7/5): Cozy B&B with great food and host - Meals were some of the best we had in Japan
- Nigel (8/5): Very good - The owner was extremely friendly and helpful No place to sit. It is an uphill 2km walk to hotel.
- Gyuhwan (10/5): Exceptional - The owner was very kind and helpful.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very nice and helpful people running the hotel. However, the place is VERY hard to find and reach, especially at night time. Moreover the room was exceptionally cold, including the mattress, so that I was forced to put a blanket below and another on top so as not to freeze. On the upside, as I said, the owner was really nice and even offered me to take me to the train station in the morning.
- Nasser (10/5): Super Pleasant Stay - The owner was beyond nice. Most of the time when we wanted to go anywhere within the city he would drive us there and sometimes he would come pick us up. After the first night when he picked us up from a restaurant I did not call him again for pickup and kept asking him to call us a cab to go to town, but still most times he would drive us. The rooms were clean and roomy compared to other Japanese hotels. We had two rooms with private bathrooms, but I think most rooms share bathroom. We ate breakfast there two days, which was great. Two down sides to the hotel, no phones so we could not do room to room calls when we needed to and the location. There is not much around there so if you want to grab a bite to each or shop or something you have to call a cab or the owner has to drive you there. At the same time we felt like we were in a cabin in the middle of a jungle, especially with all the sound from toucan birds and such. The owner was so nice and accommodating that the location was not a big deal. Overall this was an exceptionally pleasant stay.
- Joseph (10/5): One of our best in Japan 😃 - The host made the difference!!!!
