- Clémentine (9/5): Lovely stay for our first night in Yakushima - The old couple running the Minshuku are really cute and friendly. I loved the wood features of the hotel which made the atmosphere so warm. Highly recommended! Everything was great!
- Anya (10/5): Exceptional - Great breakfast, clean and spacious room
- Yurika (8/5): Lovely encounter with the owner - Owner and staffs are all lovely. There are not so organized with bookings but gave us chill island vibes. It’s a bit pricy I found for this type of lodging with shared bath. But they had breakfast included so that made us relaxed a lot to eat together.
- Winter (10/5): Exceptional - I loved staying here and would like to return one day. The room was perfect and the staff friendly though no English. Loved the breaky and onsen. Forgot hiking boots and was able to hire them from the minshuku.
- Fabian (10/5): A very nice base to explore Yakushima - This is a really nice hotel, if you want to explore Yakushima. The owners are very nice and will help you with any problems, that occur. You should speak japanese though, because the communication in english could be hard. As I speak japanese I can not fully evaluate this though.
You can get breakfast and lunchboxes for hiking days from the inn. In theory there is also dinner, but as in many small japanese inns, just like breakfast it can be booked out sometimes.
We had both breakfast and lunchboxes and both were absolutely nice and not expensive at all.
If you go hiking you might as well rent hiking boots for a small price.
The inn has a community bath, that is a traditional japanese bath with showers and a hot bath. You might have to share it, though at later times it is often not used by many customers.
We were staying with three people, which can be a bit muggy in one room depending on the weather, but it is still a great inn.
- Andrea (8/5): Perfect for a Short Stay - Staff were very helpful and friendly. Perfect for our 1-night stay in Yakushima. No private showers.
- Andrew (8/5): Very good -
- Minh (8/5): Very good - Great breakfast
- Oshrat (9/5): We would happily stay there again next time - The meals were excellent, a real treat. They were both tasty and a chance to experience local culture. Even our 12 year old kid enjoyed them.
The location was very convenient. We arrived by bus from the port - there is a bus stop right in front of the minshuku - and rented a car for the next few days (convenient parking available in front of the minshuku).
The owners are very nice and friendly, though they don't speak much English.
Although we were told ahead of time that it is possible to pay only by cash, there was no problem to pay by credit card.
- Leonie (8/5): Traditional well kept and run Japanese minshuku, great location, excellent facilities kind and welcoming staff need to p - Fantastic concept the minshuku. Roomy deluxe double futon room excellent storage, facilities worked really well. Each room had its own wash basin, bar fridge and table. A washing machine and dryer was available to use The cost was excellent for room only but q high if adding breakfast and dinner ie $250 dbb vs $90 bed only. Very friendly and helpful staff. Seemed you could hire hiking boots, sticks, waterproof gear. There was a little water damage around the window needing attention.
- Rachel (7/5): Traditional (Vintage?) Japanese Experience! - Wonderful location in a traditional Japanese style hotel. Staff very friendly and loved the onsen shower experience! Fresh towels and yukata every day. Convenient location with bus stop right next door. Room not fully clean and could not contact the host via booking website - which made it impossible to amend our booking in advance.
- Zheng (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zachary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yuzuki (8/5): Nice to stay - Bus stop #32"高校前” just in font of hostel
- just 10 min walk to the supermarket. There have a few restaurants nearby but not always open, better to reserve dinner at hostel. Also, you can order bento at hostel
- The host is nice and very helpful, he drives us to the nearest bus stop for go to Shiratani Unsuikyo, but a little bit difficult to communicate with English
- room is clean and tidy, share bathroom and wash room.
- 100lawrencec (10/5): Minshuku Yakushima - We visited Yakushima in July 2024. We stayed two days at the hostel. We checked in in the afternoon and went to our room which had bunk beds for six people. The room also had a vanity, refrigerator, TV and a low table for 4 people. The window was facing north-west, with a view of the sea. The toilet was shared, but it was clean. On the first floor there was a large eating area, a kitchen (for staff) and a lounge, sitting area. The place was decorated with beautiful, large pieces of lumber. Also on the first floor was the common Japanese style bath (sento), separated for men and women. The bathing area was decorated with natural rocks and could fit three or four people. They also have laundry machines.
Although we stayed two nights, they cleaned the room after the first night, so when we came back from exploring the island, we found a nice, clean room, with fresh towels and yukatas (Japanese robes).
The staff was very friendly and we stayed until late at night talking with the part-time workers there.
The hostel also offers hiking equipment to explore the mountains (boots, backpacks, hiking sticks, etc.)
You could order dinner or breakfast ahead of time if you want (we order Japanese breakfast only once, for 1,000 yen each, and it was absolutely great!).
- Ying (8/5): Very good -
- Nina (9/5): Superb -
- Jihyun (8/5): Very good -
- Christine (10/5): Wonderful place to stay - Charming minshuku with super helpful staff and very many amenities eg free washing machine and dryer, good onsen, v good meals . My room was spotlessly clean and had a wash basin . The minshuku is about 40 min walk from the port though it’s also on a bus route . There is an Indian restaurant and a large supermarket within easy walking distance . Nothing
- Anna (8/5): Very good - Very good food. The personnel are very eager to help. Communication is very difficult if you don't speak Japanese.
- Miku (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christopher (9/5): A comfortable, friendly family hotel, with great staff, good food and good rooms. - The staff were incredibly helpful, going out of their way to assist with trekking information. The road was a bit noisy, but it went quiet overnight.
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- James (6/5): Overbooked and got sent to another hotel - Supplies bentos and hiking gear for rent. Staff was very nice When I arrived, they said that they were overbooked and brought me to a hotel down the street which was not as nice. I didn't protest too much, but it's hard for me to accurately rate because of this.
- Wayne (8/5): Great place if you're willing to sleep on a futon. Convienient to port and airport 15 minutes away. - A traditional place to stay. Roll up futons on the floor so many people could stay in one room which is suitable for hiking groups. They hire out walking shoes and snorkling gear if needed. Shared toilet but very clean. Showering facilities were the onsen downstairs but it was good. Breakfast and tea available but we didn't use these facilities.
- Christian (9/5): Very nice ryokan - Great Japanese breakfast and dinner, nice staff, nice location bath rooms and toilets in the alley
- Johannes (9/5): Superb - Very pleasant and hospitable people. The accomodation contains a lot of facilities (like a small onsen) and information and supplies for discovering the island. Had a very pleasant stay in a large Tatami mat room for 2 persons, would definitely recommend to come again!
- James (10/5): Exceptional - The owners were very welcoming and helpful. We felt like we were guests at their home.
- Rena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daria (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing hospitality (the host was sweet and caring), you have everything you need - enough toilets (2 per floor), onsen-style shared bath and all the amenities in the room. Perfect for Yakushima stay. Also, the room is insulated enough to keep off the nasty insects if you don’t open windows.
- Takako (10/5): Stay Minshuku Yakushima, you will know how we love those days! - The wonderful people whom in our unforgettable trip are the owner and all the stuffs of Minshuku Yakushima.
We are very thankful to them.
The property is on a hill from ocean and very clean and thoughtfully organized, and the meals are deliciously cooked local food. We even could ask the advice of hiking schedule and recommendations of local places by buses, means they know the activities very well and reliable.
The location is wonderful; wonderful Izakaya, local markets, even the town center is walking distance, also we can go major hiking places by bus from front of the Minshuku. (In addition, we can ask for packing lunch for hiking.)
Lastly, there’s some stuffs fluent in English.
You shouldn’t have problems. Nothing
- Anastasia-milena (7/5): Good - English speaking. Delicious Japanese style breakfast. The bed was super comfortable. It is possible to order a bento for 600 yen a day before until 7pm.
- Dgeethom (8/5): Very good - Amazing breakfast and dinners. Very good value, lovely people The bath was quite luckewarm, sometimes
- T (9/5): Superb -
- Griffiths (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful bathing facilties, very comfy tatami room with sea view.
The staff anticipated what we neeed to know about our hiking plans and even drove us to meet a bus one day. They were generous in many ways. I honestly can't think of anything.
- Samzen (8/5): I'd recommend it to those looking to do the mountain walks nearby. - The breakfast was good, a semi-traditional Japanese style. The room was pleasant. Overall a good stay for a few days in Yakushima.
- MishMish13 (10/5): Lovely christmas and new years - We stayed 7 nights, and chose this guest house based on previous reviews. Probably because of end of year timing, there were no English speaking staff. The guest house was run by a very lovely elderly couple who ensured we were comfortable despite language barriers. This was the main reason for 5-star review.
The tatami room was large and comfortable, but always smelt damp on entering. Had a sink in the room which was useful. The bath was just divine everyday after long hikes.
We were the only guests for a few days, and realised the walls were quite thin on days with other guests. Most people were considerate of this.
Free use of washing machine, dryer 100yen. Breakfast and dinners were great, traditional Japanese style - a must try. Ramen shop to the left of guest house is not on google maps - also a must try (just walk next door).
We are a minute drive from large supermarket and yen store, and across from that is an amazing cafe/restaurant with top quality pasta and pizza, plus other fusion dishes. Perfect for a rainy slow day.
Hired hiking for 2-days shoes for 1000yen. Very new and clean. They forgot to order our bento lunch boxes, and elderly gentleman was awake at 430am making rice balls for us that he would not charge us for.
Very deserving of 5-stars and great to support a local family.

- KimH168 (10/5): Best family hostel.... - Host Naruhito and his wife have the most beautiful and fantastic hostel in Yakushima.. My wife and I, with our 3 teenage kids stayed at this hostel and were only planning to stay one night and move but once we fell In love with this place we stayed an extra 2 nights.
Naruhito and his family picked us up from the ferry port and looked after us in every way. Gave us the best recommendations for the local food and drinks every day and night... Dropped us off and picked us up from these great local eats too. Gotta alive that !!!
The location is 5 minutes from port and close everything.
Every night we joined other guests in the meals area and chatted. Celebrated my wife's birthday in style. The hosts father who makes his own honey have us some to taste and if you stay here it's a must to try some of this local honey which has a distinct test of mandrinines.
The hostel has everything from laundry , hiking equipment hire, big hot bath house, laundry services and walking distance to town and super market...
- JunL335 (10/5): Amazing hostel - Was stuck on the island as all the ferry schedules were cancelled on 21 May. Luckily, Yakushima Minshuku had a place for us. The staff was very friendly and offered us pick up to and from the port nearby. Dinner is excellent. The room and toilets are clean.
- bubinam (10/5): The best guesthouse i have been so far - SIMPLY AMAZING!11/10!
The stuff is ultra nice, kind and always available. They also gave me a ride to the port when i had to come back to kagoshima. They also offer for rent shoes and tools for hiking in case you don't have it.
The place is beautiful and well decorated with charming wood decoration objects
You can choose to ask for dinner/breakfast or not for a higher price but even if you don't, you can eat in the lunchroom(+free coffee and tea!). There is a big supermarket really near where you can buy anything you need!
The place is also very clean and always smells nice. ATTENTION THOUGH: the bath is really goodlooking, clean and "japanese style" but There are no private showers.
The location is perfect! Only 20-30 min by walk from the port ( you can also take the bus) and really near to Shiratani utsukui the best place in yakushima! There is also a bus stop in front of the guesthouse that leads to the okonotaki waterfall and a bus stop that leads to Shiratani really near (10 min i think)
Finally the Room: a large, Japanese style, comfy room with television, Japanese table, the sink and more! In a nutshell everything you need to stay confortable.
