They front desk people didn’t understand what we weren’t trying to communicate to solve the problems. The younger one had bad attitude. The receptionist the day we arrived on the other hand was great. Very skimpy with toilet paper and things like that

• Ian (9/5): Excellent boutique hotel in a good location - The staff were very friendly and helpful. The property is well located in a quiet part of the old city but just a short walk from restaurants and places of interest. I would certainly stay there again. Good value. My room was excellent and the bed very comfortable.

• Tim (8/5): Great central Chiang Mai location and fab value - Fabulous location for our needs. Comfy beds (not rock hard) Very helpful staff Room to park the scooter We have booked to stay again. Shower in our room was a little dodgy - needed a rose head repair *not an issue but be aware there is a 500bht, cash room/key deposit. (we've been travelling in Thailand for 3 weeks and this is the first time this has been asked for). Receipt given so again not an issue - just don't arrive without some cash.
• Leivers (10/5): Great Hotel - Very clean, room was lovely, cleaned every day if you want it and amazing for the price. Not a lot, it was great for us. Stopped in other hotels in Chiang Mai which were twice the price and half the quality.

Staff did not seem interested. Room was ok but shower was blocked and balcony was wet and dirty. Very limited TV channels.

• Adam (4/5): Not an expensive place to stay, but we’ve stayed other places which cost the same but were much nicer. - Very good location Bathroom smelt like sewage, along with the surrounding area of the hotel. Need to ask to have your room cleaned, the ‘please clean my room’ sign on the door isn’t enough- if no one is on reception then it just won’t happen. It was my financés birthday whilst we were there so I messaged asking if it was possible to decorate the room for him and how much it would cost. They didn’t reply to my message and just left some petals on the bed and charged me for it. It wasn’t expensive but I was given no choice.

• Kok Chiah (Rick) (7/5): Nice stay at The Velvet Orchid - Room is clean & comfortable. It is centrally located, easy to get around the old town. Saturday walking street, and Sunday Walking Street are just about 10 minutes walk. There is an odor in the bathroom. Informed the very helpful housekeeper and was swiftly sprayed and refreshed. There are also a few mosquitoes around in room.
• Silvia (10/5): Ich würde sofort wieder in dieses Hotel gehen. Ist was Besonderes. - Die Lage, der Charme, sehr sauber. Ruhige Lage in einer Seitenstraße. Es ist ein schönes altes Haus und daher - wie bei uns - etwas hellhörig mit den Holztüren und Holzböden wie ein Altbau. Die Fenster waren relativ neu. Ist nicht wirklich eine Kritik. Ich liebe Frühstück im Hotel, aber es gibt Kaffee im Zimmer und ein Cafe 3 Gehminuten weg.

• Reid (9/5): Clean, quiet, comfortable will stay again - Staff was friendly, rooms were very clean, hotel was tucked back in an alley and very quiet, very close to both Saturday and Sunday night markets The lack of a standard shower, there was a sprayer but no was to hold it up unless you did it automatically and the jets in the hottub did not work in our room

• Matej (1/5): - Hotel had good central location and surprisingly comfy bed. Night guard gave us good feeling of security. The receptionists were helpful in solving at least problems, they were able to. We ran into many problems with this accommodation and eventually got really fed up and would never return. After arrival we checked the rooms. Safe was not working in none of 3 rooms we had. Eventually they gave us huge backup safety key, which didnt work either, so they had to physically change the safe. But the new one also didnt work on password but we had to carry the key. Lack of Hygiene We had top floor rooms close to the elevator. The rooms were not properly cleaned - hair from previous customers/cleaning ladies was on the floor. The bathtub in the room was not properly cleaned in ages - it was really disgusting - dark, greasy stains from previous occupants were the reminder of the age and lack of proper upkeep in this property. Tap was leaking water (we were able to fix it on our own). 3/4 towels were dirty, so we asked staff for clean ones. One of the new ones was dirty again, so we played a game of changing them until we ran into clean ones. AC was not clened in ages, smelly. Terrible noise interrupting sleep - be aware!!! Biggest problem of this accommodation is (probably) water pump in the top part of the hotel, probably on the roof in the area of the elevator. Building is terribly sound insulated. So it turns on and on in regular intervals 1-2 min on, 1 min off. Because of noise from environment the noise is not annoying throughout the day, in the evening it takes over and this constant noise will not let you get ANY sleep, you will need earplugs just to fall asleep. All of our three rooms were very close to the source of the sound but basically whole upper floor can hear this. We discussed this with reception, they turned it off for one night (thanks god) and promised to fix it later. But eventually nothing got fixed and we were told its the water pump - so its a feature, not a bug. In the reviews of other travelers here on booking, this is a problem for a few years and accommodation is doing nothing to fix it.

• Sabine (5/5): Ich bin leider genervt und buche dieses Hotel nicht mehr - Entfernung vom Stadtzentrum soweit weg, dass das Treiben unhörbar ist und trotzdem in angenehmer Nähe zu Laufen. Gegenüber eine Baustelle. Arbeitsbeginn 7:00h, gleichzeitiger Beginn der ansässigen Schule um 7:00h mit fröhlichem Gesang. Aus meinem Fenster sah ich eine Mauer. Kein schöner Ausblick. Leider war die Hauseigene Pumpe während der ersten 2 Nächte kaputt und ratterte ohrenbetäubend bis 1:00 nachts.

Also just fyi - you cannot smoke in the balcony, so if you're taking the deluxe like me for that reason - know that a superior room will answer your needs instead..

Staff on 24/7 and a security guard at the front at night. My shower was occasionally cooler than I’d prefer but no complaints since the days are so hot.

Bathroom drain a bit smelly but got use to that, I was on the 3rd floor. They don’t give you water unless you asked or serviced your room. But nothing was a problem.

The room was beautiful, clean and comfy. No breakfast, but there are several nice options close by. Great value for the price. They were doing construction next door, which was a little noisy. I couldn't hear it up in my room, though.

• Jeffrey (10/5): Great place, excellent staff - No breakfast on site, but there are lots of nice places nearby. The hotel is in the center of the walled city, near Wat Chedi Luang. It's near a school, but my room was nice and quiet. The staff were excellent. I would have liked to have breakfast available at the hotel.

• Mia (2/5): Would not recommend, there are nicer places for cheaper without damage deposits - It was minutes walking distance from night markets, but no cars can get to the entryway. There is a 500 bhat damage deposit - cash only, and the room already had damaged infrastructure upon arrival. The walls were paper thin, being able to hear others use their bathroom. The beds were super hard and uncomfortable and the light switches did not make any sense. The safe was not working and the only solution was to leave us with the universal key. When I enquired about the use of the safe, 3 staff members entered the room to look around out of nosiness and this made us very uncomfortable and unsafe and we considered leaving. The fridge, despite only working when the key card was in, never reached colder than room temperature whenever we were in the room for long periods of time either. The photos online for booking are entirely different, and not at all where you stay. Additionally, the water provided was in dirty glass bottles!

There was no way to get to the property with taxi or car. Very frustrating and inconvenient. Property location, didn’t care much. Had to cut the stay there short, from May 14 to May 16 only.
