- G6869TAcatherinep (10/5): Kleivstua Hotell Norway Magical Experience - A Magical Stay at Kleivstua Hotell
Kleivstua Hotell is enchanting even on foggy mornings. If you don't have a car you can take a bus from Oslo and get off at the nearest stop, Sundvollen. As avid hikers, we chose to tackle the steep yet stunning ascent to Kleivstua. Along the trail you'll find informative signs detailing the area's history. Be sure to carry water especially during the warmer months. The hike is a short distance of about 2.8 km and absolutely breathtaking.
On our way up we enjoyed views of Tyrifjorden, the lake, and its surroundings. Upon reaching the top of this hill we arrived at Kleivstua Hotell, a tranquil retreat featuring a beautiful main building adorned with glass windows that showcase the majestic mountains. The interior is steeped in history, although we weren't familiar with it, but became more so after learning about it, and it also exudes elegance, with tasteful table settings and a beautifully decorated bar.
Our room was incredibly peaceful, spacious, and cozy next to a fireplace, complete with available firewood. We enjoyed a fire each night, and the bedroom is separate from the Den, ensuring it stays cool for a comfortable night's sleep. The bathroom even boasts a private sauna! There's a wooden bucket and spoon for creating steam, and we could control the intensity. It was truly relaxing.
The den had comfortable chairs, a couch, and a television, which we never turned on.
Dining Experience
Now, let's talk about dinner! the four-course meals were absolutely exquisite and worth it. The dining room accommodates both large or small groups, and since we were a small group of two we were seated in a charming historical room away from the main area. The table setting was regal, making us feel like royalty!
The general manager, Andy Friedrichs, personally welcomed us and set the tone for our dining experience. His pride in Kleivstua was evident through his warmth and sincerity. We observed that he went to each and every group and spoke to everybody. Our chef, whose name may have been Alpreen, came to introduce each dish. While I can't recall the exact names of the dishes, I can describe them:
First Course: Tuna sashimi with salads, local vegetables, and berries.
Second Course: Veal accompanied by a special sauce, carrots, and asparagus.
Third Course: One night featured beef, while another showcased fish.
Dessert: One night we savored crème brûlée, and the next, a white chocolate cake with a delightful white chocolate sauce and local berries.
Though I wish I could remember all the dish names, each one was simply delicious. The chef beamed as he noticed the empty plates after each course. The meals were perfectly seasoned, not too salty or fatty, and brilliantly prepared—truly impressive!
Breakfast was equally delightful, with one morning offering a buffet and the other featuring table service. The breakfast spread was just as elegant, and the kitchen staff were always kind, smiling and engaging in conversation with us, which added a personal touch to our stay.
Hiking Experience
Although it was mostly foggy during our visit, preventing us from seeing the Northern Lights, Kleivstua is still a fantastic location if you can't venture further north to see the lights. You might get lucky here as they were there according to my App but it was foggy. There are hiking opportunities year-round, (snowshoeing) and of course, Nordic skiing in winter.
The hike to King’s View (Kongens Utsikt) was clouded in fog, but we look forward to experiencing the view next time. Regardless, the hike was enjoyable, lined with signs featuring photographs of local wildlife and historical information.
We attempted to hike to Kleivfossen (the waterfalls), but the rocks were slippery from the rain, and it was muddy. There are numerous trails in the area that we explored without knowing their names. We visited a few weeks after Storm Amy which had downed countless trees, but the trails remained accessible without issue.
Honeybees
Our main reason for coming here was to meet the beekeeper of Kleivstua, Andy Friedrichs. He is a beekeeper who takes pride in bringing honeybees back to the mountains of Norway and through his beekeeping he educates visitors on the need to protect and preserve the bees by planting honeybee friendly plants in our own backyards. Truly a magical place!
We absolutely adored our time at Kleivstua Hotell and eagerly anticipate our return!
- I5211EEellenl (8/5): Excellent view and very good foo - Excellent view and very good food with friendly staff and a historical site. Worth a visit! If you’re looking to spend the night or just have a nice meal in spectacular surroundings this is the place for you. The restaurant is associated with a hotel but there are also camping grounds nearby with the same spectacular view.
- Jan (8/5): Historisk sus over Kleivstua - Kleivstua er absolutt å anbefale. Praktfull beliggenhet, historiske omgivelser og mange flotte turmuligheter. Praktfulle bygninger og en flott stab.
- silverdiver13 (10/5): Magic 🪄 - Magic.
This word describes this place best.
Every wish you could have: not even thought it already came true.
It just brings one surprise after the next. The surrounding woods are beautiful and rough. And Andi ist just the most guest oriented and friendly person to host your stay.
Perfect stay for us.
Nothing to wish for.
10/10
Lokasjon / hotel leverte godt over forventning og anbefales.
This is a very cost hotel on top of the hils, up from Sundvollen. This is an old hotel on the vintage road to Oslo. There is a fantastic view from the top.
I was seriously impressed by the friendly staff, the exceptional food with local touch. We had lamb and cabbage as super tasty main dish.
The rooms was clean an nice.
Overall a cool mix of new and old buildings.
The meeting rom and conference facilities were in good condition and worked well.
Overall this exceeded expectations and is a short drive from Oslo (45 min).
- H7200UJcindym (4/5): Nice staff, but bad room - Old worn out rooms and furniture, dusty radiators, narrow stairs and not easy access to rooms.
The lamps are old and shaky (the ones in the bathroom are loose and seem like a fire hazard), use inefficient warm light bulbs (halogen), where they could have switched to LED which would be cheaper (electricity wise) and give a better light. Dimmable lighting would also be good. The night lamps are way too bright, and the ceiling lamp is way too weak. These are things it’s easy to do something about, if the hotel wishes to make a better impression.
The floor and furniture is worn out and squeaky and the radiator is filled with dust. (See attached picture)
There are no televisions or other screens in the room. The bathroom is very small, yet OK. The mirror is little too.
The rugs (which are charming yet old and worn out to go with the style) on the shiny wooden floor are falling hazards. It is possible for the hotel wonders to buy some strips from ikea to place under the rugs.
The staff, which mostly are Danes speaking Danish, are very nice and service minded. The staff deserves five stars!
When I was little going to a hotel was always better than being at home. It was a treat. Modern, neat looking, better quality than the ikea furniture at home. Now it’s often the other way around, especially in this hotel (but also in other hotels I’ve been to)
To get to most of the rooms and toilets you must climb stairs. Not very accessible. That is also a minus.
Beautiful surroundings and view, I must say. But the quality/feeling of the room is just too bad for me.
It was a room in the main building.
It is a beautiful place with a lovely staff, but I’m afraid I can’t recommend it because of the quality of the rooms.
- gionatav417 (10/5): Excellent staying - unusual business venue - We hosted a company board meeting at the hotel. The staff was helpful and the meeting room was well efficient. Rooms are spartan (most probably too much for a board meeting) but nice and stylish. The area around the hotel is signed by hiking trails and a couple of lakes.
- 698kristiang (10/5): Restaurant - Went there with my wife for a 4 course meal. The location is wonderful, the service impeccable and the food was amazing. If you're looking for something special we can highly recommend this place! :-)
- Knut (10/5): Fantastisk - Service, mat, beligenhet, renhold - alt var helt fantastisk
- HansKUpp (10/5): Absolutely perfect wedding at Kleivstua - We held our wedding at Kleivstua. 90 guests, 3 days. Amazing!
- Pre-party with excellent barbeque dinner
- Concert
- Wedding seremony
- Wedding dinner and party
We used all buildings and guest rooms. You can feel the history and the tradition, this is really something else than the downtown hotels. All guests were excited with their rooms and cabins.
The food at Kleivstua was simply amazing! Barbeque dinner, breakfasts, lunch, 5 course wedding dinner and wedding cake. Our guests really appreciated the extensive use of local food.
We had wine and drinks based on recommendations from Kleivstua. Excellent!
We really appreciated the advises and support from Kleivstua in the planning phase and during the wedding weekend. These guys know how to hold a great party!
Highly recommended!

- dalun2 (10/5): Teambuilding - Very nice teambuilding. 2 days in autumn. Kleivstua is a unique place with genuine atmosphere. The surroundings are stunning and the food is excellant. ... and you get a lot of it!!!This is an old-fashoned hotel so do not expect TV in your room, A/C or a busy bar. What you can expect is a cozy fire lace nice sofas and excellant services. Perfect place for a birthday party, wedding party or as I said... a team building
- Abdulkareem (10/5): wonderful - It was a wonderful and quiet establishment and the most striking thing was the old furniture and the wonderful design of the hotel
- susanne (10/5): Unique experience - Absolutely fabulous hotel in a stunning location at the King’s view. Staff was really friendly, breakfast was great and room really comfortable. Would highly recommend to stay there. A total unique experience
- Tore (8/5): Stemninggsfullt tradisjonsrikt hotell - Et veldig flott sted, mye historie i veggene. Meget imøtekommende og god service.
