Guest Reviews
- kristen (10/5): Great pre-flight stay, Comfortable bed. - Great bed! Very clean room and bathroom. We had the king overlooking the roof patio and it was perfect for us.
Very nice staff / family (seemed like a family run place).
I left myself no time before the airport and was sorry to miss the breakfast, as they make it to order.
No complaints, would stay again.
- Conor (10/5): - Stayed one night but if we were in San Jose longer, would have loved to stay here and use it as our hub. Clean, friendly, safe. Short walk to downtown.
- Cameron (10/5): - Extremely friendly staffs, really well talking care of guests. I had mismanaged my reservation and overstayed without knowing. Staff had been understanding and handled my mistake so elegantly and professionally. It was embarrassing for me, while the hotel manager had handled the situation extremely well which made me feel welcomed and appreciated. Personally i have never been more appreciated and welcomed. Would love to stay in touch and visit again.
- George (10/5): - Great
- Huxley (8/5): - Clean, convenient and good value
- Mary Jane (10/5): I would stay there again - The host was very friendly and the breakfast was custom made. It was delicious made the stay a bargain and a pleasure.
- Jessica (10/5): - Such a cute and safe space. My flight arrived late but i was welcomed and shown around. Comfortable room. Breakfast the next morning was delicious and interactions with owner and staff was so kind and helpful. Would stay again!
- bob (8/5): - Always clean.Staff is great and helpful
- christina (10/5): - Wonderful hotel! Wonderful staff and very clean. Would definitely stay here again!
- Juna (10/5): - Very authentic, kind, and gentle people. Very authentic place. Optimal location if you don't have a car.
- James (10/5): - Winston was an absolute legend. Great guy, felt extremely welcome. Thank you !
- Kim P (10/5): - Winston and his team were amazing - they were friendly and helpful. The property was great - reasonably priced, nice breakfast, clean, colorful and located very close to Barrio Escalante - great coffee and dining options. The train ran by during the day and early evening but didn’t bother us. We stayed for 3 nights and would definitely return!
- Graham (10/5): Lovely little stop in San Jose - Very friendly, helpful staff made us very welcome. Allowed us to leave luggage and use the communal areas after our check out time. Very good breakfast.
- James (8/5): - Great staff. Very helpful with transportation and accommodating an early breakfast.
- Heather (10/5): - My flight was late getting in and I arrived after 10pm. The host was very nice and accomodating and got me into my room quickly. Parking was tricky but he very patiently guided me into a safe spot. There is road noise because its a city but the hotel was very quiet overall.
Breakfast was great! All staff were so nice.
- Sanford (10/5): Excellent, comfortable boutique hotel - Casa 69 is a boutique hotel with the warm, homey feel of an Airbnb. The owner, is on site. The email communications were very good. Please note that the hotel payment must be made at the hotel in cash.
When you arrive, you are warmly greeted and shown to your room. The breakfast eating area is alive with colour and artwork as well as plants and a tree growing up beyond the roof. It is a perfect setting for a relaxing breakfast. Assistance for tourists is available all day. The staff, are particularly helpful in providing suggestions. If you have difficulty climbing stairs, just ask for a room on the main floor.
Breakfast consists of blended juices, warm, crusty rolls, your choice of eggs, rice and beans and amazing red papaya and sweet pineapple. The breakfast menu doesn't vary from day today and is always delicious.
There is a good-sized relaxing space with couches and a variety of tour books for this country.
We had an extended day of over a week and enjoyed the comfortable accommodations and service. Highly recommended!
You can walk into the city and see a small park, the national library and the contemporary art museum (MADC), all of which are great tourist sites. The library had two art exhibits. Two major train stations are nearby.
There is a restaurant area with many restaurants within a 10 min. Walk. Also try Sopitas for a lunch or light dinner. Please like this review.
- Gabriella (10/5): - The property felt private and safe, and the staff was accommodating and welcoming. The property has a beautiful rooftop area and outdoor dining room. I highly recommend Hotel Casa 69 when visiting San Jose.
- bob (10/5): - Excellent staff. Well decorated great breakfast friendly
- Lauren (10/5): - Clean, comfortable and ideally placed. Staff were friendly and helpful
- Jeanne (8/5): - This is a no frills property where rooms are clean, large enough but rudimentary. The common areas are nice but small and the people in charge are the real draw. Very nice and helpful. You feel like you are in someone's large home.
No pool or restaurant, and only takes cash but certainly I would go back on my way to or from the area.
- Zeenat (10/5): - Good location, decent facilities, hotel itself is beautiful and staff are so welcoming and nice. Breakfast was great. No aircon in room but the fan was sufficient. Would highly recommend.
- Adriana (8/5): - The hotel is quite centrally located. However, this makes it extremely noisy. The sound of traffic is deafening at night even with windows closed. If you are a light sleeper, think again.
The property looks lovely when you come in, the area where you have breakfast is very nice too and the staff are so so kind. Food was delicious too.
Cons: The worst part is that they only tell you they accept cash only payment on arrival. Not ideal and really inconvenient. Had to withdraw cash from an ATM nearby with a commission
The rooms need some work. There were some crusty stains in inside of the bed cover and I could not bring myself to use them which made for an uncomfortable night
- Troy (10/5): - I had a wonderful time at Casa 69. All of the staff were accommodating and friendly. Casa 69 is great for solo traveling, couples, or groups. The breakfast was amazing and they arranged pickup and drop off to/from the airport. I highly recommend and will be back again!
- Chris (10/5): A gem - I enjoy this hotel a lot! Its not a box hotel. Not a chain . Its 2 cute houses and an annex. Kurt ( the owner) and his great staff are awesome.
I have been going to costa Rica for almost 30 years.. this is the only place i stay when im in san jose
- Garshom (10/5): - The staff were extremely nice and helpful. The property is very tasteful and well appointed.
You can easily walk to barrio escalante, where there are a lot of restaurants.
Breakfast is included and is quite nice.
They only accept cash, so please plan for that.
- sam (10/5): - Great little hotel in a great location with terrific staff. Very flexible and made sure I was comfortable through my stay. Highly recommend!
- Paul (10/5): - Very interesting and beautiful gardens and rooms behind secluded walls. Didn’t look like a hotel. Loved the breakfast in the morning and helpful staff. I would stay there again
- jose (10/5): - Winston , Enrique and the rest of the staff provided the best service we received in our entire trip around the country.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Wonderful place, safe and secure... quiet and lovely courtyards, lobby and breakfast was excellent 5 stars. Hosts and staff like family. Room very clean and comfortable, with good english tv channels. Pizza Hut half a block and visible from #69 front door... best spot I've found in San Jose.
- edward keith (10/5): Great - Super nice property and people
- John (10/5): - We stayed on a Sunday many of the bars and restaurants were closed… we had a great dinner at a Peruvian restaurant just around the corner.. the trains due blow their whistles starting early in the morning not a problem for us as we are early risers
- martina (4/5): - Very loud music and party people in room next to us all night long. Hotel is old but room was clean.
- Charlotte (2/5): - Property and personnel are stellar. But next to a train...and night clubs. Very noisy til 3 am. And no street signs to hotel.
- Thomas (8/5): Good location and great service. - It was a fun stay. The staff are lovely.
The room itself was very hot, with only a ceiling fan to cool it - and oddly, the sliding door didn’t lock, only the security gate outside the door, which felt a bit odd.
Breakfast was lovely and service was good. As long as you don’t mind a bit ‘rustic’ then it is a good place to stay, easy walking distance to the city and Barrio Escalante.
- Robert (10/5): - Loved the inner oasis feel, art, friendly staff, and delicious breakfasts. Stayed 6 nights, would stay again!!!
- bob (10/5): - The staff is great, the breakfest is excellent
- Jigna (10/5): - Beautiful stay, clean rooms, scrumptious breakfast, excellent value for money.
Thankyou Kurt and team ❤️
- Manuel (10/5): - Staff are adorable
- Theo (10/5): - Warm welcome and helpfull with planning
- Viktoria (10/5): - The property is very safe behind a nondescript door accessible only by key. All the staff are so welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The rooms have no air conditioning and it is located in a noisy area, but the city cools down enough in the evening and coupled with the fan in the room, I didn’t think AC was necessary. I was also able to sleep fine with the street din. The property is gorgeous.
- Fabian (10/5): - Excelente hotel,Bien ubicado en la zona de San José centro,El personal muy amable y atentos.
- Dane (10/5): - Winston, the property manager, was awesome.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Super close to the central part of San Jose so the location is great. Also, the staff here are super friendly and helpful. Would recommend this place to anyone.
- dana (10/5): - Nicely decorated, Clean room, Nice friendly owner and staff
- david (10/5): - Really liked Winston. Really nice guy and made a great breakfast. I went out for breakfast on my first day and regreted it on the 2nd day when I found out what I had missed.
- Catherine (10/5): - Little gem on the edge of downtown. Tucked behind a walked entrance within walking distance from museums, shopping, restaurants and bars (Barrio Escalente).
- Renae (10/5): - Super friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful landscaping and art.
- ALEXANDER SMITH (4/5): - The hotel is very simple with simple old furnishings. It holds a certain charm amplified by the 5am rattle & squeak of an old train service. People were nice, Violeta their dog even better. Not a restful experience - airport transfer not paid for.
- Jorge (10/5): - Awesome staff - will stay again
- scott (10/5): - Great experience. Staff is amazing. Can't wait to return.
- Dale (10/5): Couldn't have been happier - A great place to stay with perfect staff very quiet surprisingly so when it seems to be full of guests.
Close to attractions a bank just around the corner restaurants nearby couldn't have been happier we'll definitely stay there again
- Jory (8/5): - It's not the easiest place to find, but the staff is nice and helpful once you get there. San Jose isn't the nicest city in the world, but all of the interesting museums and lots of places to eat are within walking distance. We only stayed for one night and left too early to have breakfast in their cool dining area, so we probably didn't have the full experience. We simply wanted a cheap place to stay downtown that was close to the museums and had a comfortable room for a night. Therefore, it served its purpose for us and would do the same for a couple or small family in a similar situation.
- bob (10/5): - It is always a pleasure to stay here. The rooms are always clean as is the whole hotel. The staff is great.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful property!
- Richard R. (10/5): The best staff in San Jose - It is a pretty hotel with an excellent breakfast and a very friendly & helpful staff
- Olivia (10/5): - Wonderful experience at Casa 69! The breakfast is very yummy and the hotel is very clean. There is an upstairs balcony that has a beautiful view of the mountains surrounding San Jose. The hotel is a bit hidden and there is not much advertising in the surrounding area which made it hard for our taxi driver, but the privacy is really nice in the bustling city. As for local restaurants to grab dinner/food, no cab is needed! We walked to El Jardín de Lolita which was a less than 5 min walk. Would come again!
- Mary (10/5): - Very accommodating staff, delicious breakfast that was included in the price, and charming, artistic decor.
- Katherine (10/5): Perfecto! - Angel made sure that I had a lovely stay. Excellent included breakfasts, even though I did not upgrade them on any of my 2 mornings there. I stayed at 6 hotels over the course of 2 weeks all over Costa Rica, and Casa 69 had the best hot water shower of them all! Very happy with the value, and $30 ride to airport. The noise level was quite quiet staying mid-week. I enjoyed seeing the resident dog.
- George (10/5): - Wonderful couple of nights there in September and October!
- James (10/5): - Nice place, helpful staff.
- Jane (10/5): Excellent - Wonderful place. Hidden Gem.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value for location - Pretty good - great location and friendly service. Decent breakfast.
- bob (10/5): - I never have a car when I stay there but I always see that they make room for the guest that do
- Raphael A (10/5): Charming, friendly gem in a great central location - This was amazing, central location, very cute and comfortable and a very beautiful backyard. The staff was really nice, friendly and forthcoming. They helped us organize airport transport shortterm in the middle of the night even though therw is curfew and therefore its hard to get.
A pity we missed the breakfast as we had to leave at 4 a.m.
- Manuel (10/5): Vacation top - Excellent
- Alfonso (10/5): - Wonderful all around!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We love the location of this property and the fact that we received an upgrade to the same hotel, across the street. We stayed 4 nights here, at different dates. The owner was very helpful. We got a daily breakfast (2 eggs, bread, butter, marmalade, fresh fruit, and coffee. You could also order “a la carte.” This property is about 12 short blocks from San Jose downtown, where there are a lot of restaurants and a street like a “corridor” (Avenida Central) with no cars, where pedestrians can walk more freely, just having to cross the streets on each block. As you walk about two blocks, from the corner of the hotel, where the Nicaragua Embassy is, you can start appreciating the historic architecture, museums, a park (next block,) and the view of downtown at the bottom of the hill. There is a Chinatown on Avenida 2, parallel to Avenida Central. The Streets (calles) and also the Avenues (avenidas) are numbered by pairs. For example: the calles start in 1, 3, 5, etc. The Avenidas start at 2, 4, 6, etc
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved the property and location! Great views of San José and mountains from the terrace, on second floor. Breakfast was included (2 eggs, bread, butter, marmalade, fresh fruit, and coffee. The owner was very attentive and helpful. 12 short blocks to downtown. Restaurants nearby.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very cute hidden gem. From the street, you wouldn't know there was such vibrant, colorful hotel inside. I really like that though, because theres no tendency for traffic to linger around. Perfect location, you're walking distance from many points of interest like the Jade museum, National museum, Museum of gold, barrio Escalante (which has many restaurants, bars and cafes). The staff is very friendly, making you feel like family. Breakfast is a plus, very simple and fulfilling. I would stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - 80 meters away from Nicaragua Embassy, is Hotel Casa 69 located, on Calle 25A, between Avenida Central and Avenida 2. The staff is very helpful and nice. It feels like being in your own house. The guests share a common living room and dinning room, but there are also other tables outside in a shaded area for the continental breakfast (2 poached eggs, coffee, fresh fruit, bread rolls, butter, and jam. You could also order “A la carte.” There are other rooms outside the house. From the top rooms, you walk right to the terrace, with spectacular views of the mountains and the buildings surrounding. From Nicaragua Embassy, WALKING West, down the hill, for 5 blocks, there is the National Museum of Costa Rica. From this museum, continuing on Avenida Central, for other 8 blocks, you will find downtown, where all the shops, restaurants, and banks are. Between Banco Central de Costa Rica and Banco Central de Costa Rica, there is a little kiosk, on Avenida Central that belongs to Banco Nacional de Costa Rica, which serves as a Money Exchange, but you need to present your passport for the exchange. On July 1, 2021, the bank paid 612.50 colones for $1 US dollar. Bon voyage! Like Costaricans (ticos) say: Pura vida!
- Richard R. (10/5): Love the hotel - Angel is the best host in Costa Rica 🇨🇷.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - .
- Eugene (8/5): We will stay there - Stay was good. Clean & comfortable bed and shower. Shuttle doesn’t run from the airport from 2pm to 7pm. So we had to take a taxi. But everything else was good!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice place to stay for LGBT
- nyala (10/5): - My stay at Casa 69 was splendid and I will definitely be back next time I am in Costa Rica. I almost feel bad to leave. The entire staff is so attentive, adorable and friendly. The begin to feel like friends or family! PURA VIDA!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very helpful staff. Grest breakfast. Great location.
- Rasaq (10/5): Worth it! - A great place in a great location for a great price.
- Patrick (10/5): Highly recommend! - The two gentlemen who run the place could not have been nicer! And their breakfast was amazing to have before heading out for the day or (in my case) going to the airport. The room was clean and large and the bed and bedding was super comfortable. Cute garden courtyard and a roof deck with amazing views. I would recommend this place to anyone.
- Allan (10/5): A hidden gem in San Jose, Costa Rica - A lovely 1930s home converted into a B&B with a fabulous host named Kurt who oversees every bit of the operation and still has time to interact with guests. The rooms are clean and comfortable, arrayed around an interior garden with a fountain. There are table and chairs just outside the room for lounging. The rooftop terrace has views of the city. The neighborhood is safe and clean, with a good choice of restaurants within walking distance. (Try the Peruvian restaurant around the corner.) Lovely continental breakfast included, or you can order a full breakfast for just a few dollars. Be aware that cash payment is required at check-in.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A charming hotel, wonderful hospitality, great breakfast. Overall, an excellent value.
- Eleanor (8/5): Nice getaway in the middle of busy San Jose - Nice getaway in the middle of busy San Jose. Beautiful courtyard, nice rooms with outside seating, friendly hotel staff and delicious breakfasts
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very welcoming and helpful manager. Very goid location. Nice and personal decoration.
- Don (10/5): - Staff is excellent. Rooftop views are great!
- Nikki (10/5): - Absolutely beautiful, the courtyard was breathtaking and the service was impeccable. The staff stayed up late to check us in after we'd dealt with two cancelled flights and were panicked, responded quickly as well as providing a drive from the airport. Can't say enough good! Will absolutely stay here on our next trip to San Jose :)
- Kathleen (10/5): Amazing bienvenida - Wow, everything about this place is amazing, just beyond the entrance is a new world, the décor, ambience, personnel, food and not to mention the owner, who is brilliant in hospitality. Never felt more bienvenida.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This property has it's own touch and look and it is different from any other hotels we were staying in San Jose. Under new management it become even more pleasant then before. Will definately stay here in the future.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I liked the courtyard space. The large tv in the room was nice as well. It seemed to be a newer tv!
- Cynthia (10/5): Best hotel in San Jose! Great price and friendly - Kurt and his staff made us feel like family. So very helpful and knowledgeable also. Breakfast was amazing too! If ever we are back in San Jose we will definitely stay at Casa 69! Within walking distance to downtown where lots of stores and restaurants. Thanks Kurt!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Wow. I can not recommend this hotel enough. Kurt and Angel are amazing, so hospitable and kind. I felt like I was welcomed into their home. The room was colorful, with tall ceilings and lots of natural light. I had an amazing breakfast each morning, and recommendations for great things to do in San Jose. Do yourself a favor and book Hotel Casa 69!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - the owners Kurt and Angel, along with their staff were extremely hospitable. All of them could not do enough to make you fell like a member of their family.
- Meche (8/5): - The place was nice, clean and the staff were all very nice. I recommend some earplugs if you are staying in the front two rooms as some of the guest might be a bit on the loud side when getting back after midnight.
- Andrew (10/5): - Welcoming, helpful, and kind: all the ingredients for a great stay!
- Martin (10/5): - Beutifully restored old San Jose inner city home with large trees in the ciurtyard. Exceptional host and staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is a very special place to stay - we've been there four different years and plan to go back next year. The staff is welcoming and attentive. The rooms are cozy and clean. The breakfast is good! It's in the city within walking distances of main attractions. Uber (Inexpensive) and taxis are readily available. It's everything we need when we go there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - First time visiting San Jose and loved my stay at Casa 69! Professional, friendly, and attentive, with clean rooms and an excellent breakfast! Centrally located, very walkable to neighborhoods like Barrio Escalante as well as all of the museums.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Always a pleasure - Second time here. 4 years apart. Excellent stay just like the first. Definitely will use it again on my next time visiting.
- Jose (10/5): - Excellent location, the staff were very friendly and accommodating
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The roof top patio and views, ambiance and decoration of the entire house.
