Guest Reviews
- Rajat (10/5): Garston on top - Host is awesome, and allowed me to do early check-in and upgrade my room to ensuite attached. The coffee bomb truck is there to feed me up as its a small town and I got my veggie option as well đ
I stayed there because I am tired and want a break and the place is perfect. Thanks dear đđ None
- Anonymous (5/5): Passable -
- Laura (7/5): very good - the room was very nice and clean ! and the staff very helpful
- Sandra (6/5): Okay, a port in the proverbial storm. - Location good, not too far south from Queenstown, particularly after a late overseas flight. Lodge in complete darkness, no staff to open door after knocking on several doors and windows.
Finally found a resident who let me in and showed me to my room and the communal dining area.
- Arlene (3/5): Disappointing - Location is great. This could be a great little hotel with some substantial redecorating. Shabby. Classless. Grungy. Felt dirty.
- Talia (2/5): Very poor - The bedding and towels had stains all over them. Itâs right on a very busy noisey main road so anyone wanting a full night sleep think again, lots of bugs, definitely not a clean place to stay.
- Taher (5/5): Passable - Rooms were not clean and not even close to the pictures published on booking .com
- Al (3/5): This is not a boutique hotel - The coffee shop over the road. Mushrooms growing next to a leaky shower in the womans bath.
A women's toilet full of blow flies.
The sound of rats in the walls.
- Saowanee (6/5): Pleasant - Too narrow room
- Mandy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (9/5): Excellent Value for money and prompt reply to queries with regards to stay details - Value for money. Acceptance of our two dogs. Proximity and peaceful stay Bathroom light didn't work but not a big problem. Room was comfy and quiet.
- Brendan (6/5): Pleasant -
- Raewyn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrew (7/5): Good -
- Chris (8/5): Very good -
- Barry (7/5): Budget accomodation. - Lack of water pressure in shower made it unuseable.
- Elaine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ngee (9/5): A great place to stay in terms of value for money. - The service was top notch at this property. I was running late and the receptionist was so kind and understanding even though I had missed an email from them with regards to self check-in. Very impressed with their professionalism and kindness. There were also shared facilities to make our own food and get clean water. Fantastic. The bathroom was a bit cold.
- Hannah (7/5): Good -
- Dianne (8/5): Very good -
- Moana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sharyn (5/5): Passable - Basic accommodation, beds, wifi and location were good. No instructions for TV so couldn't get TVNZ news. Could have watched Netflix and others but totally unable to get basic TV though I can usually manage to work things out not able to here.
Shower took ages to get mixer sorted, needs replacing in room 6.
No hot water except with boiling the jug to wash any dishes in the common area.
TV in lounge but couldn't find the remote anywhere.
Had to help two guys find the males toilet and shower as no sign on the door. Female toilet had sign but bathroom beside I thought was unisex until finally finding the Mens toilet.
- Angus (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hope (9/5): Superb -
- Talty (8/5): Very good - Convenient, clean, wonderful views advised there was no food to byo
- Glyn (5/5): The place had a bit of a run down feel. Probably would not stay there again. - The place was clean and the lounge and kitchen area were large. There was only one low power microwave. There was no toilet paper in the toilet when I arrived, and the toilet light never worked at all. No milk in the fridge. The place is on a main road and so noisy with traffic passing all night. Also my room was very small.
- Kaiei (9/5): Superb - Good
- Shannon (9/5): Superb - Coffee bomb was welcoming, lovely.
Stroll through the museum was interesting, fun
- Petrus (7/5): Good - These are rooms in an old hotel. The room was small, but clean and comfortable and there was a handbasin. The shared bathrooms and kitchen were tidy and clean. Checkin procedure wasn't clear, especially if you don't have the app.
- Mcvicar (8/5): Very good - Excellent value for money. Comfy bed shared kitchen facilities with microwave, fridge, dishes and selection of cereal, tea and coffee for breakfast.
- Simone (8/5): Very good -
- David (7/5): Good - Kitchen and lounge facilities were fine. Room was adequate. No bathroom light. No hot water for shower in the morning.
- Nicolas (9/5): Superb - We got the entire place for ourselves with a self checking. The location is very remote and there are very few people in the small town.
- Sherry (7/5): Good - Quite comfortable room. Nice park across the street and good coffee from the coffee bomb airstream. Staff was non-existent and security was beyond lax. Cereal with stale. Be sure to prepay or you might get stuck outside for a long time.
- Jiri (8/5): Very good option for couple of nights near Qeenstown. - Good level, equipped kitchen, very good price. Problem to regulate warm water in shower.
- Michael (8/5): Very good - Never met the staff. All done remotely... Some light bulbs in the toilet area would be nice...
- Brian (9/5): Great value. - Fitted perfectly with my requirements for a nights stay on a bke packing trip.
- Veronika (7/5): Good - The location was great, we were traveling from Queenstown to Te Anau and didn't want to do the drive in one day. Pretty comfortable beds and a lot of appliances. I tried to call the staff two times. They didn't pick it up and didn't call back either. There was no hot water in the shower. It said to call the staff if that happens however they did not pick up.
- Paul (7/5): satisfactory - Breakfast No kitchen to use.
- Emily (5/5): Book te anau early! - The good- ability to check in late/ whenever you like and come and go as you please. You wonât see any staff. Showers themselves were clean-ish. Price obviously cannot be beat and we only stayed here given te anau was completely booked. The rooms were absolutely tiny, had no soundproofing so you do hear every road noise, bed is overly soft, and the worst of allâŚ. the bugs. When we entered our room, the windows were open. I assume this was done to prevent âdeadâ air as the facilities donât have great ventilation.
However, we killed no less than 4 spiders within 5 minutes of being in our room in addition to the flies. There were dead flies in the bathroom as well. When we woke up in the morning, we had a lovely additional spider friend crawling under the large blanket at the foot of our bed. Overall, the amount of bugs was just really uncomfortable.
- Richard (7/5): Quaint lodge with a great future! - Lovely old pub style accommodation run by an enthusiastic young owner. Excellent common areas with all facilities. Easy to find and quiet. Needs fly screens on Windows and better mattress.
- Jamilah (7/5): Good -
- Richard (9/5): Great place to stay if passing through Garsten - Nice shared kitchen and lounge area.
Older pub style rooms. Quite small but comfortable.
- Janette (8/5): Southland Otago border Delight experiencing good old fashioned hospitality - Brooke was lovely and so helpful. Enjoyed the communal atmosphere, dining room, lounge where there was a communal jigsaw to enjoy. The bed was a little soft for my liking but my husband liked it. The facilities were good value and location perfect for our riding the trails. Recommend the Roar coffee in Brookes coffee cart and the raspberry milk shake . Loved that we could store the bikes in the lounge. A light over the sink in the kitchen would be a huge improvement
- John (8/5): was nice place to stay after a 14.5 hour bike ride - breakfast nice to have as not much else around a little basic perhaps some bread for toast in the morning would have been appreciated
Nice to able to store bike inside
- Karen (7/5): Good - Bed was comfy. Good size room. Lodge itself in nice, quiet location. No working light in bathroom.
No full kitchen, which would be good as Garston is a fair drive from supermarkets.
Better sound proofing. Very little sleep had as could hear neighbouring tv very loudly. Also could hear people down the hallway open a d close door and stomp up and down hallway almost the entire night. Without all the noise, this would have been a pleasant stay.
- Ursula (9/5): We were pleasantly surprised with the lodge. It is old but provided everything that we neeeded. It was clean and spaciou - The lodge had plenty of space and facilities. Nothing
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kay (8/5): Great service . - The host gave exceptional service. She was very helpful. We arrived late on our bikes and she picked up a pizza for us from another town. The showers were great and the bed was very comfy. The host was very quick to respond and when I locked the key in the room it wasn't a problem. We were happy to have a warm shower and a comfy bed. We don't have any complaints.
- Marg (8/5): Short and sweet - Lovely hosts, relaxed atmosphere. Very clean and appreciative of being able to have our two dogs to stay.
- Callum (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Evangeline (9/5): Superb - Easy check-in, good location and parking.
- Kunihiko (8/5): Very good -
- Phil (10/5): We thoroughly enjoyed the Nevis and the Garston Lodge was an ideal base for our outdoor pursuits. - The Continental breakfast was available, and the kitchen facilities included a dishwasher, fridge and freezer. There was plenty of space for guests in a large communal area. Our hosts were friendly and helpful. We were totally happy with this accommodation.
- Noni (4/5): An interesting place for stop overs during cycle âAround the Mountainsâ tour or for exploring local mountain biking/ - The locationâŚit was near Kingston and we were booked on the FlyerâŚliked the rural small village setting. The place used to be an old pupâŚ.some updating and renovations had been done but not a lot. There was no hot water for doing dishes by handâŚ.weâre concerned about hygiene of thisâŚinstalling a zip to deliver instant hot water in kitchen would be good.
Also did not like how noise travelled freely âŚno insulation so could hear every creak, footstep, voice etc in sleeping area.
- Kiwa (8/5): Very good -
- Anunya (9/5): Superb -
- Jakob (8/5): Very good -
- Mbaudrier (6/5): Not our best experience of NZ but tolerable - Moisture everywhere in the bathroom and the room smelt really bad
- Luisa (6/5): Pleasant - There was no stove top and the room and kitchen were cold
- Astral (8/5): Very good - Helpful staff Older buildings, adequate facilities
- Francy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marjo (8/5): Very comfortable and enjoyable place to stay. Would definitely recommend. - Excellent place to stay in Garston. Nice comfortable room with ensuite. Kitchen and lounge provided - both excellent.
- Jozef (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sau (8/5): Very good -
- Kang-huai (8/5): Very good -
- Kang-huai (8/5): Very good -
- Lloyd (10/5): Awesome place to spend the night. - An amazing historic building and the Owner is awesome, just an all round amazing experience.
- Andrew (8/5): A perfect overnight stay for those travelling around New Zealand's South Island - The lodge was a great place to split our journey from Central Otago down to the Fjordlands. Check-in was easy, even though we arrive late.
Although a little rough around the edges (i.e., 'charming'), the place was clean and comfortable. Despite there being a bar (which was closed while we were there) and the fact we didn't leave especially early the next morning, we didn't see a member of staff, which was a little odd.
- Graham (8/5): Very good -
- Jonathan (4/5): I wouldn't stay there again. Not real value for money. -
- Kieran (9/5): Superb -
- Karl (9/5): Superb -
- Jill (8/5): Very good - Wonderful staff who was very accomodating with me. Clean room and on site communal kitchen. Nice location between Queenstown and Milford Sound. NA
- PaweĹ (4/5): Below expectations - It has complimentary breakfast for guests, but limited to different sort of oats and milk and peanut butter + jam. It supposed also to have toast bread, but we have found only last two slices in the freezer and it was not re-filled.
No problem with a parking in front of the building. The room was very small and not super clean. We didn't feel comfortably being there and some profound room cleaning would be nice. In the morning my wife woke up with bite marks and we were unsure what was that (it could be a spider which we have found in the room in the morning). The shared bathroom was ok with complimentary shower gel and shampoo, but there was no hairdryer in the men bathroom.
- John (8/5): Very comfortable. Like being home - The owner Nothing
- Floris (5/5): Passable - The room was relatively modern, convenient location. Had to wait around for 10 minutes on arrival before I could check in. Shared bathroom in the images is the womenâs one, the menâs bathroom has not been renovated. Quite noisy near the highway with poor sound isolation in the room.
- Veronika (9/5): Pleasant! - Authentic place. Surprisingly clean and well equipped. Very bright room, which I loved! Slow wifi
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Johanna (8/5): Very good -
- Donna (8/5): Good for those looking for basic accomodation at a very afforable price. - A nice affordable stop for basic accommodation when traveling to or from Queenstown. The bed was comfortable and room ventilation was good. Wifi was consistent and of good quality. Check in and out was easy enough. The light bulb in the shared ladies restroom was out so night time visits had to be done in total darkness. Too late to call for assistnce. Likely the bulb had just gone and the managers were unaware.
- David (5/5): Could have been a lot nicer. From an agricultural background, so understand working dogs, - however the dogs were fairly - Cozy, old fashioned, good beds. No hot water, very noisy, local pub, wasnât open - we were told to get a meal there as nothing available in Garston. But actually had to travel to Mossburn for a meal. Not the end of the world - but just not as easy as Athol would have been.
- Wen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Debra (6/5): Tired and Uncomfortable - Peaceful town, well positioned to Milford Sound and Queenstown. No one on site to meet you.
Breakfast meant to be included. Message states bread in freezer but empty. Booking site states you can use communal kitchen to heat your own food, however there is no plug for the sink to wash up. No hot water in kitchen unless you boil jug, but again no plug to put in sink . No tea towel to dry dishes.
There was a dish washer to use but you can't put in on till full.
Mattress needed replacing. We had to use pillows in the centre of the bed to stop from rolling into the middle all night.
Building has so much potential but is tired and needs updating.
Would not recommend đ
- Neville (8/5): Very good -
- Gloria (6/5): Pleasant -
- Hayden (7/5): Good -
- Karim (10/5): Excellent facilities - The location was very clean and was exactly in my way to Milford The bed was a bit soft for my liking.
- Lisa (9/5): Superb - The beds were super comfy and cozy! Had a better sleep than at home.
Easy as to arrive and depart and good facilities Nothing of note
- David (10/5): easy travelling - being back home feeling
- Rebbekah (10/5): Beautiful historic building. - The whole vibe of the place was awesome. The bed was old and a couple sleeping in it ended with them in the middle of the bed. It would have been awesome to have a heat source in the shared kitchen.
- John (4/5): Disappointing -
- Joe (8/5): Garston is NOT garstly! - Lovely vibe, historic wee town and hotel.
Best of all, very accommodating and pet-friendly!
Thank you Shame their pub / cafe isn't presently operating, as I would've easily stayed a second night.
In Garston, after 4pm or so you need to be self-contained for food & drink
- Michelle (7/5): Friendly staff and perfect central location - The oldie worldie charm Missing light bulbs in the hall and menâs toilet, no hot water in the kitchen or tea towels.
- Todd (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): Good place to stay will stay again -
- Andrea (9/5): Nice place to stay - The room was small but comfortable and the kitchen had enough facilites to make simple meals. Good continental breakfast available. Not too far from Queenstown
- Parth (9/5): Superb -
