Guest Reviews
- Andrew (9/5): Super reception staff, very friendly and helpful. Whilst the decor is a little dated, the room was clean and food excell - Very helpful staff and excellent food (dinner and breakfast) A little tired and old fashioned
- Joanne (8/5): Enjoyed the hotel and food. - Food was delicious and the bedroom was lovely. Needs decor modernising in areas of hotel.
A passage way up to reception from the bar at the back and car park entrance would be better than dragging luggage around to the front entrance of the hotel to check in.
- Amanda (8/5): Good, but expensive. - Location
Room was comfortable
Restaurant food was very good, both for evening meals and breakfast. Room too hot
No fridge in room and no fresh milk for teas/coffee in room.
Disappointed with the complementary sherry, cheap and undrinkable (a wee dram of a local whisky would have been appreciated). The wait staff in the restaurant seemed disorganised.
This was the most expensive per-night accommodation on our Highlands tour and definitely not the best, so cannot rate highly for value for money
- Anthony (10/5): Relaxed atmosphere, attentive staff and great food - Welcome from staff, fantastic location and food. Really positive and enjoyable atmosphere. We enjoyed everything
- Glen (7/5): Practical and served a purpose - Practical and easy to find
Staff members were pleasant
Our room felt like it had recently been renovated
Parking good Felt like a pub which had rooms
- Gillian (10/5): Loved it - Staff were very good… room was lovely… food was good Nothing
- Rachael (8/5): -
- Deborah (9/5): -
- Christian (8/5): Great restaurant -
- Jayne (9/5): -
- martin (10/5): -
- John (10/5): All good except for the shower - Bloody good Shower was difficult to operate
- Peter (9/5): - Sehr gutes Nachtessen. Freundliches Personal.
- Giulia (8/5): -
- John (8/5): - No lift.
- Ruth (9/5): -
- Valerie (10/5): - Staff very helpful. Room perfect - large clean and comfortable. Breakfast very good. Liked their efforts to become greener, doing away with small plastic bottles of shampoo etc. Also proving fresh milk in reusable flask.
- Jonathan (8/5): -
- Robert (10/5): Great stay. - The staff at The Tongue Hotel was extraordinary. Always after my comfort and best interest. Great place to stay. In high season, parking could be an issue. Dinner/chef terrific. Breakfast good. I'd stay at the Tongue Hotel again.
- Elizabeth (7/5): -
- Alan (7/5): Traditional hotel, no real issues, but perhaps a bit of complaceny arising from lack of competition. - It's a reasonable hotel in a remote location where there is not much choice of accommodation. Menu was slightly misleading (prawn crackers supposed to be part of curry dish, but none available and apparently no intention of serving them). Staff a bit disinterested and uninformed (3.8% is not a low alcohol beer). Other guests were complaining over breakfast service.
- Jeff (8/5): - Excellent staff and great food
- laurie (10/5): Comfortable accommodation in a nice hotel. - Cosy hotel on the NC500. Room, bar, food all good. Packed lunch available if required. This was the most expensive of the seven hotels that we used on the NC500.
- John (9/5): - Clean and tidy. Staff friendly. Nice room. Menu is not as good as the sister hotel in Brora .
- Paul (3/5): Wonderful Stay Until the Bill Arrived - We stayed at Tongue Hotel during our NC500 trip and, overall, had a very enjoyable stay. The food was excellent throughout, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and the location is fantastic for exploring the north coast. The atmosphere of the hotel was relaxed and comfortable, and we genuinely enjoyed our time there. Unfortunately, the stay was overshadowed somewhat by a disappointing pricing experience. Due to an administrative issue, our bill was consolidated with that of friends travelling with us, which revealed that we had paid substantially more for an objectively inferior room with a poorer view and fewer facilities.
I fully understand that hotels use dynamic pricing, and I do not expect every guest to pay the same rate. However, the scale of the disparity was difficult to reconcile, particularly given the clear difference in room quality.
I raised the matter politely with management after the stay. While the responses were courteous, the hotel relied entirely on explaining the pricing model rather than acknowledging the guest experience outcome or offering any meaningful goodwill gesture.
It is a very good hotel overall, but this aspect unfortunately left a sour taste.
- Christine (6/5): A little disappointing - Location suited us.
Room was a good size Expensive, would expect more for the price. Hotel beginning to look a little worn.
No milk for cereal at breakfast despite asking twice. I thought I’d paid for breakfast but it only included continental- which was slim pickings. To pay for anything cooked on top would have made it very expensive.
On the menu it said sourdough but all we got was sliced white.
Was woken at 02.05am with a good 15 mins of scrabbling coming from above???? Rather disconcerting!!

- Edith (9/5): -
- Linus (9/5): -
- Claire (9/5): Not the cheapest accommodation but had everything’s by you needed for a comfortable stay. - Good size room and bathroom. Free sherry in the room, nice touch. Dinner was ok but nothing special, breakfasts very nice.
- Dean (10/5): Add this Hotel to your portfolio - The highlands comes through with another winner
Food was amazing the staff were very helpful and friendly. The room OMG beautiful and roomy the bed was amazingly comfortable the experience there I’ll be definitely booking this one in again 10/10
- Rita (10/5): - Loved everything . The room was cozy but had everything we needed I can't think of anything
- Simpson (10/5): -
- Deborah (9/5): - Fabulous location, lovely comfortable room, and very friendly, helpful staff. Bathroom quite small for the room cost, and overall cost was by some way the highest we paid on NC500.
I would highlight that I think it was very wrong for the hotel info to say there's nowhere to get lunch, to encourage you to spent £16 per person on a packed lunch. For the benefit of others, there are lots of cafés all around the coast, and we got a meal deal sandwich, snack and drink for less than £5 per person, at the Tongue village store, approx 100 metres from the hotel, each morning. I think, in the spirit of honesty, and supporting their local community, the hotel info should have said this (at least mentioned village store).
- paul (10/5): - The room was really comfortable and well thought out with a few lovely extras.
The staff were outstanding and our evening meal was 'fine dining' Nothing really but an extra half an hour's grace for breakfast would be nice as we are late risers!
- Emma (9/5): -
- Paula (9/5): Spacious rooms, set in a quiet location - Well-appointed and large rooms. Great location in a quiet setting and town. Walking distance to Varrich Castle, 1hr from Smoo cave, and within 1 hour of other beaches on north coast. Good food options in the restaurant, and staff very friendly and helpful. Thoughtful option to offer packed lunches.
- Juerg (10/5): -
- Nick (10/5): Beautiful place to stay whilst on the NC500 - Everything Evening menu had limited fish choices but the food was excellent
- Connor (8/5): -
- Esther (8/5): -
- Aimi (8/5): Lovely hotel in a great position and beautiful scenery. Great night sleep and good food. Super porridge! - lovely ambience and resturant. Room was comfortable. Harry was very good at looking after us at dinner and breakfast. Lovely young man. A great breakfast! Porridge the best in Scotland so far’ . Very good attentive staff.
Deathly silent at night even with the window open. very little - loud other guests at dinner! Maybe would be good to have some ambient music at dinner so you don’t have to listen others!
- Robert (5/5): -
- Lucy (10/5): Lovely stop off in Tongue - Very friendly staff in a lovely hotel with an amazing restaurant! Lovely room with very comfy beds! Parking was interesting!
- Kelly (8/5): -
- Andrew (3/5): Disappointing. - Food was reasonable Overall cost was very expensive for what was delivered. Small room with poor view. Cost more than £200 which is very expensive.
- Julia (8/5): Very enjoyable - nice atmosphere - Welcoming staff - food was very good Room was a little tired and quite small
- tim (9/5): -
- Michelle (10/5): - Good location. Comfortable accommodation. Breakfast was cooked to order. Not much around for more than a one night stopover.
- Ronnie (8/5): -
- Euan (10/5): -
- Marta (10/5): - Posizione comoda se state facendo NC 500 Camera un po’ piccola
- Kelly (10/5): -
- JAMES (8/5): Fantastic. - Large 1 bed apartment , separate bedroom , toilet , kitchen and dining room . Great pub onsite and restaurant and close to city centre. Plenty of room to stretch out unlike many hotel rooms. All good.
- Robert (10/5): Car got a puncture. Staff were excellent in helping resolve situation. - Location unbelievable N/A
- Petra (9/5): -
- Euan (10/5): An enjoyable and comfortable stay in a welcoming hotel. Highly recommended. - Dinner and breakfast, including haggis, were excellent.
Reception and welcome to the hotel were charming and informative.
Room was easily accessible and very comfortable. Nothing.
- Jason (9/5): -
- Rosemary (10/5): Brilliant - It was well set out. Being an old property made it a spectacular place to stay The lay out of the rooms
- Bryan (9/5): A very welcoming hotel set in a peaceful village. - The bedroom was beautiful and so comfy. The bar area was relaxing and the restaurant food was of a very high standard.
- Cameron (9/5): -
- Carol (7/5): Classic Scottish country hotel with superb food. - Great location with stunning views through the windows of our room.
The temporary manager was professional, friendly and clearly knew his job!
The other staff were all lovely, chatty, welcoming and working hard.
Good sized bedroom and comfy bed.
Special mention to the food. Attractive menu and everything we ordered was spot on. So well executed- scallops were cooked to perfection, pastry was so thin and crisp - immaculate. The property is tired. It needs a bit of a refurb this was most obvious in the en-suite which through clean was dated.
Windows, paintwork etc need redone.
- ping (9/5): -
- Simon (10/5): - Its a very nice hotel, with amazing staff, and an absolutely incredible onsite restaurant which is pretty much mandatory due to its remote location.
- Catalina (7/5): -
- Samuel (10/5): Great place to stay in Tongue - Well appointed hotel in a lovely setting. Very nice and comfortable room. Staff was friendly and attentive. Delicious breakfast. Nothing
- Alicia (9/5): -
- Anne (9/5): Staff and food great. We would return. - Breakfast great, quantity and quality. Room fabulous. Dinner great. Manager friendly and helpful. Staff friendly and helpful. Extra heater in room. Room was a bit cold but it is an old building with older windows. Possibly heavier curtains would help. Maybe new windows to suit the property.
- GregStrain90 (10/5): - This was my dearest stay on my NC500 trip at just below twice the price of my next dearest stay plus £20 surcharge for my dog, however, this is quite a fancy hotel, the rooms were very nice, clean and quite big. They also leave you a wee dram on them which is a nice touch, and for the £20 surcharge for the "doggy digs" fee you get a gift pack for your dog which includes poop bags, a toy and Upcycled Dog treats made from left over breweries which was a very nice tough. The bar/lounge area is dog friendly just not the dining area as expected. I would definitely stay here again.
- Rhona (8/5): -
- Chris (8/5): Great location friendly staff great food worth a visit. - Great Location old building with history good breakfast and food in restaurant very friendly staff. Nothing
- John (10/5): Beautiful hotel in a spectacular setting. Staff were fantastic especially Coll & Summer. In fact all the staff were - Beautiful hotel in a spectacular setting. Staff were fantastic especially Coll & Summer. In fact all the staff were wonderful.
Would definitely recommend a stay here.
- Vicsta (8/5): -
- Keith (10/5): -
- Phillip (10/5): -
- Anick (9/5): Warm welcome and wonderful stay - Wonderful stay in a hotel that was the only one open in the area during the low season, just a 2-hour drive from the sights. But aside from that fact, the welcome was warm. We also took a walk to the ruin that could also be seen from our bedroom. Bar where you can have a drink and a nice restaurant that is cozyly decorated.
- Walter (9/5): -
- Felix (7/5): Charming and worth the stay. Prepare for dated plumbing and noise. - Amazing staff, very professional, cannot fault them
Great old school vibe, worth a premium charm
Free mystery drink (sherry? Mulled wine?)
Fantastic tea and coffee in room Bathroom fan is weak
Shower drains exceptionally slow leading to a frustrating shower with pauses so it did not overflow
Noise: Stairs are noisy, doors need a slam from outside to shut so lots of banging all evening, and loud music outside till late.
- Claire (10/5): - Lovely room and location
- Balfour (10/5): - Very good food
- Hogarth (10/5): Would highly recommend - All aspects of the hotel were excellent - room with panoramic views, friendly staff and good meal choice Nothing - all good
- Tina (9/5): Excellent stay even booked another night! - Modern, well looked after comfortable stay. Great shower. Food very good. Staff excellent. Nothing
La. Ducha no salía mucha presión,
- Carrie (9/5): - Great hotel and staff, food was delicious
- Harris (10/5): -
- Thomas (8/5): Great and staff v helpful -
- Andrew (8/5): Very enjoyable and relaxing as a one-night stop doing the NC500. - Breakfast and dinner were both very good. We had a room upgrade, so that was pleasing. Very limited choice on draft in the bar - only lager (Tennants, yuck), stout or cider! Nowadays there are lots of good Scottish IPAs around, so why not offer those?
- Lorraine (8/5): Lovely hotel, friendly staff - Very comfortable friendly hotel
- Margo (10/5): Amazing place to stay. - We loved it all. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful with whatever was put to them. The room was excellent and spacious and very comfortable. There was nothing to not like.
- Clive Ormerod (9/5): good place to stay for exploring the area, - comfortable room. friendly staff. Excellent dinner and breakfast. Nothing
- Serhii (10/5): -
- Mandy (9/5): Well worth a visit - Great location, lovely food, friendly staff. We had a beautiful room with all the usual items in it. Perfect stay
- María Isabel (10/5): Cosy and fantastic experience - It was very clean and cosy. We had the poached gnocchi for dinner and they were absolutely fantastic, the hotel staff were lovely and in general the stay was really good. Hard to beat price-quality wise.
- Philip (9/5): An excellent hotel and one of the nicest I've stayed in during my Scottish tour. - Just a single night stay with evening meal and breakfast, staff are excellent, this is now part of a group of Scottish hotels focused on the NC500, the hotel feels special.
Evening meal was 5*
