Guest Reviews
- Trevor (8/5): Pleasant stay - The room was clean & tidy if a bit dated
The staff were very friendly & helpful
I had a meal Saturday night in the restaurant the food was very good & a good selection on the menu
A lovely full English breakfast on Sunday morning set me up for my day Northing really
- Gwendolene (3/5): -
- ROBERT JAMES (7/5): Very convenient - Olde worldly Some very interesting artefacts
- David (6/5): Convenient location but only reasonable quality this return - Location and dining Stayed before but the front attic room was not up to expectations
- green (10/5): - We loved the old feel to the building and the rooms absolutely loved it there
- Russell (7/5): Our overnight stay was OK. But without too much effort could have been made better - Good cooked breakfast. Nice friendly bar area. Excellent evening meal. Car park full of junk, which restricted the parking space available. Outside area very untidy and does not create a good impression of the pub. Bedroom decor looked a bit tired. Lots of steps/ tripping hazards for older people.
- Christine (1/5): Avoid - On a previous stay (18/12/2024) the allocated room had been used as a store room and was full of boxes. Once emptied the bed was very small and uncomfortable. Rebooked over a year later in error & tried to cancel but no response from hotel, either via Booking.com or direct email. Rude
- Rob (9/5): Great stay for 2 nights , the property has loads of history , the host was very informative and hospitable from the minu - The property had great history and character Nothing - Couldn’t fault anything about the property
- Karrin (8/5): Would definitely stay again - Fabulous host and characterful environment Parking was an issue
- Kevin (10/5): -
- Emily LA (10/5): - What an excellent gem of a pub. The whole pub is steeped in history and charm, and the rooms were no exception. Wonderful stay here for a Burns night supper and birthday party, which saw us using the pub, restaurant and rooms. Twisted staircases and wonky floors are part of the character here - and despite the age of the pub, the room was light and had a smart TV, tea station and a genuinely lovely setup. I would definitely book a room here again to visit the area, it's very central and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was a really tasty full English with a pot of hot coffee, and it really was delicious too. Recommend if visiting the area.
- Anthony (9/5): Weekend away - Room good breakfast good staff really nice and friendly Parking was a bit of a problem car park small and compact tight to get in and out street parking a little difficult. But would stay again
- Stephen (9/5): Overall good stay - Good Breakfast
Very nice room Waited for Reception staff at check-in and breakfast
Confusion over booking. Com payment
(Probably fault of booking. Com)
But I was asked twice about payment
- iain (9/5): -
- Rodgers (8/5): - Very friendly staff
- Amber (10/5): -
- Robbins (6/5): - The hotel has great potential and is in an ideal location for us It is expensive and dated in need of major TLC rooms are of an older style but basic care is lacking (for instance the dressing table mirror in room 5 is masively loose and could do with tightning up) facilities are dated with a modern price tag
- Barbara (7/5): Very nice overnight stay. - Warm and a good atmosphere. Car park was very small and untidy.
- Jemma (10/5): - Excellent service lovely facilities Nothing
- Olivia (10/5): Excellent and Very Vety Happy . - The Staff were so friendly and nice , very helpful . We had a lovely 6 night break and food was excellent. David and his wife were the Best … I have no complaints about this hotel . I would recruit to anyone.
- Ryan (10/5): -

- nicol (8/5): fantastic gem in the heart of Chateris - will definitely stay again - Old fashioned building, room and decor - loved it
Cracking pub and food was great value for money car park was a bit tight
- Smiley ☺ (8/5): Excellent value for money - Good full english breakfast, fresh & Hot. Opportunity to ask to for more or less. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. Opportunities available to have lunch and dinner if needed. Lots of history. I find parking in the small car park difficult at busy times, but plenty of free parking nearby.
- Onaolapo Samuel (5/5): It’s okay - Availability of tea, coffee, and hot water Illumination of the room is poor, the bed not stable as it moves while getting into it
- rebecca (9/5): - Comfortable stay in a historic pub with friendly staff and pub owner. Amazing four poster bed too! Nothing to dislike
- Keith (7/5): Adequate for one night - Breakfast ok, location good Nowhere to sit on bedroom only dining room chairs. Couldn’t see the tv over the footboard I’d the bed!!
- Rebecca (10/5): -
- Lloyd (9/5): Fantastic Pub/Hotel in a lovely little village, Super place for a weekend away or a night out to split up your journ - Lovely character , Great Ales and fantastic breakfast Nothing
- Dawn (10/5): - It was a quaint and qwerky little pub, room was clean and tidy and food was lovely as were the staff, very friendly and would visit again
- Smith (8/5): - Lovely oldy world pub great staff great breakfast great decor carpet on stairs was a little tired and dated

- Dave (9/5): Superb - Nice pub locatio good food and friendly staff. Nothing
- Aidan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sharon (9/5): Superb -
- Jude (8/5): Nice little town and a good location for Cambridge and Ely - This old historic pub is in the centre of Chatteris, and right opposite the picturesque church. Our room was comfortable with a modern shower room, and good facilities. Breakfast was good, but the atmosphere was awkward. Staff were friendly and pleasant The small breakfast room was a bit cramped, and it would have been nice to have had some quiet background music to counteract hearing other guests' conversations - it felt a bit awkward.
- Damian (1/5): If you want to stay in a smelly old building it’s great, if you want any sense of modernisation from the 20th century th - Nothing Dated, falling apart, poor power layout, smells horrifically of old people’s home.
- Shelley (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly staff Water pressure not great
- Angie (8/5): Nice place to stay - Decor of building fitted its age. Room was huge. Breakfast was nice. Room had everything we needed. Not fault of hotel but it was too hot to sleep. Had windows open so noise from outside was loud
- Jamie (4/5): Disappointed - Location Although old the property is in need of some upkeep. Unable to open bedroom windows as they are sealed and although there was a fan it was noisy. Evening meal disappointing chips cooked in old oil
- John (8/5): Very good - The staff were very friendly and atmosphere was good. Food was delicious. It was during an unusually hot spell amd rooms became quite warm quite quickly
- Brett (9/5): I really enjoyed my time at the cross keys - The staff were very friendly and welcoming My room was very spacious and comfortable
- WARREN (10/5): - We were on a 3 week tour of England researching our family roots and history. We were purposely looking for stays in smaller villages/towns. This fit the bill perfectly. Our bedroom was comfortable, the shower hot and the food delicious. The staff couldn’t have been nicer - my wife even felt like maybe we had found long lost family.
- Derek (10/5): - Very friendly staff.
- Finlay (10/5): Great staff...lovely quirky building - Great staff, and service - Anne was very welcoming and courteous....as were all ghe Bar Staff. The building is 13th century and lovely and quirky....though the stairs may be difficult to navigate for young or elderly
- Michael (9/5): Warm welcome and a good rest for a weary cyclist. - Very warm welcome from the proprietors of this old inn on the main road across from the church. Happily accommodated my bicycle in the secure storage area. Old style and cozy. Clean and comfortable bed. Small shower area. Good made to order breakfast. Would definitely stay again were I cycling through the fens again. Traffic on main road, but it quiets at night.
- Bruce (8/5): Very good -
- Jan (8/5): Good food, had evening meal and cooked breakfast. Very friendly, helpful staff. - Quirky, interesting building! Bathroom in our room definitely needs an update.
- Stephen (10/5): - Very friendly staff, lovely food and clean comfortable rooms. The carpark is small and can hold 4-5 cars at most and entry is via Station Street to the rear of the hotel. Loads of history on the wall of the pub and nothing too much trouble for the hosts. Would definitely stay there again.
- Neville (7/5): Good -
- Melanie (7/5): Very nice - The breakfast was lovely. The bed was comfort & the staff were helpful & friendly. It wasn't their fault as there was a problem with the water outage. The shower didn't get hot & the toilet leaked.
- Robert (10/5): - Loved the history, very quaint but interesting. David was very kind and helpful. Thank you
- James (8/5): Very good -
- John (10/5): - Stayed over for the night as was working local
Staff were friendly
And food was great
Will definitely stay again when working near
- D (10/5): - Charming little place, with a comfy bed and a nice breakfast!
- Neil (8/5): Pleasant quiet hotel in the middle of town - The hotel was central, right on the footpath (Greenwich Meridian Trail) and within 100 metres of a bus stop. There was a very comfortable bar area and the room was the best of the three that we had on our walk, especially for quietness - not only a lack of external noise but also no squeaking floorboards. It was a shame that breakfast was only served between 7.30 and 8.30, but we got a nice packed lunch to make up for it. My bed (Room 9) would have benefitted from a mattress topper.
- Alex (10/5): An amazing, character filled hotel with great food - I love this place. The hotel rooms are clean, comfy beds and nice bathrooms. The food is lovely (recommend the Stilton mushrooms) and the bar is well stocked and cosy. The staff and management were helpful and it seemed enjoyed the atmosphere. The whole place is filled with interesting antiques and bits of furniture. So much character. Give me this over a nameless boring chain hotel every time.
Thank you David and team at Cross Keys Chatteris. I’ll be back for sure.
- Louise (9/5): Charming and comfortable hotel, exceptional food and staff, well worth visiting. - We were so happy with our stay at the Cross Keys. The staff were delightful and incredibly helpful, even coming up with a solution when we all realised that we’d be leaving too early for our breakfast on the first morning of our stay. We ate dinner in the pub on both evenings. The food was fabulous and they had Timothy Taylor Landlord on tap - a personal favourite.
The room was extremely comfortable and a generous size. We were amused to have an extra ‘room’, complete with window into ours, for our coats!
The town itself was charming and we enjoyed wandering around the church opposite the hotel, and walking around the local area.
While our business trip is one we shan’t be repeating, we want to come back and base ourselves at the Cross Keys for a holiday while we explore the Fenlands. The shower was laughably dreadful, with barely a trickle and we were unable to get a constant temperature from it. We didn’t mention this to staff at the time as everything else was so brilliant. Besides, it was in a bath and the bath was fine.
- Dave (10/5): - I stay here at least once a year and it's always a great experience with friendly staff and customers. This time I got the room with the four-poster bed but with a very modern touch: a bathroom mirror with Bluetooth speakers!
- Andrew (3/5): Will not be staying again - Staff on bar at arrival were helpful regarding parking.
Service from bar staff was fine. Bedding very dated.
Shower took a long time to get to bearable temperature.
Breakfast had to be ordered night before and a time given.
With the delay for shower warming up I was 5 minutes late for cooked breakfast.
When I got down my breakfast had been put out on a table, no staff about to explain, other guests eating at a table nearby.
Finished my breakfast with no member coming to check whether it was still sat on the table going cold.
- Jane (7/5): Good -
- Anita (8/5): Very good -
- Trevor (10/5): Exceptional -
- Warren (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ailsa (10/5): Lovely hotel full of character - Room was full of character, and the breakfast was delicious. Owners were lovely, as was Leslie who checked us in. I would only say that the water pressure in the shower was quite weak, but that didn't dampen our experience massively.
We didn't get an opportunity to enjoy the pub due to our commitments elsewhere, but would definitely stay again and make time for a pint.
- Russell (9/5): Enjoyable and relaxing - The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The food was good, I had evening meal and breakfast.
The room was comfortable and much larger than I expected and it was in the ideal location for my follow on travel to work. I had no complaints about anything
- Sally (9/5): Wonderful weekend stay. - Great location, lovely old hotel / pub, spacious room, friendly, helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was superb. Also had evening food, which was just as nice.
We really had a great weekend stay here & would highly recommend. Shower was very slow, but the bath made up for it.
- Nicola (8/5): Excellent stay if you want great food. - The staff were friendly, the food was very good. Beds were comfy. Bathroom could do with an update.
- Sam (8/5): Very good - Meals where good value an room has loads of character Parking is a little restricted
- Gavin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Helen (8/5): Very good - Wonderful historical property full of character
- Nicholas (8/5): Very good -
- Wairs (8/5): Very good - Atmosphere
- Nigel (10/5): It suited my stay very well - They looked after me very well Nothing
- Cecilia (5/5): Staff great food very nice will not be coming back - Very nice breakfast quick and supportive staff very helpful. Enjoyed a meal there serving staff were really nice. They made it a pleasure and very resourceful. In the attic so any noise did not affect us. The shower room and the toilet. The shower is past its sell by date and awful red colour too. The shower just dripped no proper flow. The toilet for too noisy again awful red colour. If this had been new I would have rated this better.
- Paul (10/5): Comfortable and very friendly. - The staff were so friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Our room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. A good well cooked breakfast too … excellent service and good value for money. Nothing!
- Diane (8/5): Very good - Very friendly and helpful staff.
Large room
Clean
Well stocked
Coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, tea, kettle
First rate breakfast included Steep narrow stairs (I have bad knees)
Room got cold, but I did find a comforter in the wardrobe.
Mattress was adequate
- Gary (9/5): Charming place with bags of history - Such a charming place with awesome decor. Staff, food and beer were amazing. Water pressure in the shower could’ve been better.
- Neil (9/5): Amazing stay. Will definitely stay again - Everything. Lovely hotel with character. Great food and great room.
- Jane (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (10/5): Reception exceptional, good food, comfortable room - Good traditional town hotel
- Martin (10/5): - Reception on arrival was excellent and everything explained well. Room was very spacious and comfortable with free tea/coffee and bottles of water available. Breakfast was also very good.
- Caz7 (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely welcome. Lovely hospitality. Super cooked breakfast. Gluten free not a problem. Bent backwards to help... Room was amazing. Even a very comfy 4 poster bed. Will definitely stay again.
- Eileen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Graham (9/5): A very pleasant stay, and would recommend to everyone. - The breakfast was very good, . possibly a better choice of cereal. The location of the hotel was ideal for my visit to Ely. The hotel is very Olde Worlde, was very comfortable. The staff are very friendly, and could not do enough for you. The food was excellent, and a good choice available.
Would certainly recommend this pub hotel to everyone and would stay again when in the area. Nothing of any consequence.
- Roger (9/5): Superb - Extremely professional team led by David.
They made my stay very enjoyable.
The food was excellent "pub food ".
The pub was certainly "value for the money ". The shower head in room 14 could do with some adjustment.
- John (10/5): - Fantastic staym would definitely stay again. Only niggle which is to personal taste, was having to order breakfast the night before.
- Jonathan (9/5): Superb - We booked at last minute really because it was very reasonably priced so our expections weren't very high.
But we were very pleasantly surprised.
A very lively bar where people were clearly enjoying themselves.
Very organised pleasant breakfast.
But, the clincher was when my wife asked the owner about the property before we left and he said 'Do you hear that?" and it was people after breakfast chatting and making a bit of a nose in a function room "that's people enjoying themselves and that's what makes this all worthwhile". What more can you say. Parking. But very easy across the road.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastic staym would definitely stay again. Only niggle which is to personal taste, was having to order breakfast the night before.
- Philip (9/5): Most relaxing and well appointed to travel to several other counties - All the meals we had were excellent and certainly compared to lots of other areas of the country we've visited, in the past few months, very good value indeed Only a slight niggle, the car park could probably do with organising better as a mixture of vehicle types restricts the actual spaces
- Colin (8/5): It was an interesting and eclectic hotel - It was an interesting and eclectic hotel Nothing
- Kay (10/5): Beautiful property- friendly staff - Beautiful very old building - 14th century with loads of character. My room was very clean with comfortable bed. Some of the furnishings were dated but it was in keeping with the style of the property.
The staff were very friendly and professional and could not fault any of the staff at all.
Would strongly recommend this hotel.
