Guest Reviews
- carolwM3736UN (4/5): Overpriced and underwhelming - We stayed for one night during our tour of Scotland. We paid £175 for a very small double. The decor is outdated, shabby and very basic, although the room was clean. The wall are paper thin and it was possible to hear the occupants in the next room. The staff were very friendly.
Would not recommend and would definitely not stay there again.
- Jutarat (6/5): - Nice location room is small and very noisy at night.
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Hotel and its restaurant were very good and staff extremely welcoming and friendly
- Zach (10/5): Great stay in portree - Had a nice time and great location to explore the city
- Edward (10/5): - Had dinner at the restaurant, very good and the staff were very busy but did a great job talking care of everyone. Included full Scottish breakfast the next morning, the best.
- Arthur (6/5): - It was a nice experience overall
Door was great pub was great
It’s out there so everything is hard to supply
It’s rustic it has to be
Was in our bucket list
A hardy people live there
- Benjamin (10/5): - We loved staying here! The staff were friendly and helpful. Loved the live music in the evening.
- CHRISTINE (2/5): - Staff was horrible, they NEVER followed through and did what they said they were going to do.
The restaurant staff was great,though.
- ronaldjS2961CJ (4/5): Avoid the pie at all cost... - Rooms are basic, suspect theres a new chef as the food has gone downhill. Steak pie use to be fab but now its a soggy mess. Pastry was very poor, unedible, half cooked. Portion has also shrunk, only a few chips and over stewed veg. Avoid. Shame as it was fab up untill a few months back. Serving staff and bar staff are good at customer service, their good craic.
- hansv336 (8/5): Very nice place for a pint - We visited just the bar but were treated exceptionally well by Tommy. Very nice service and ideal scenario to have a pint and learn more about the local whiskeys and gins. Thanks Tommy!
- Marc (10/5): Fun place! - Convenient and affordable.
- Pedro (6/5): Overpriced for what it is – more like a hostel tha - The location of the Tongadale Hotel is decent, right in the centre of Portree. That said, Portree itself is incredibly crowded, which probably explains the high prices – but still, the value just isn’t there.
The hotel really feels more like a hostel with a hefty price tag. It’s situated above a pub, which tells you a lot about the atmosphere. The food was passable but significantly overpriced for the quality.
The room felt more like student accommodation than a proper hotel – basic, uncomfortable and not cleaned daily, which was disappointing. Overall, it just didn’t meet expectations for the price.
On a positive note, the service was very good. Special thanks to Caitlin in the restaurant, who was friendly and shared great local tips – she was the highlight of our stay.
Still, I wouldn’t stay there again.
- Abhinav (8/5): Comfortable stay with complimentary breakfast - I had a comfortable stay at the Tongadale hotel. It's an old building but well maintained. Room and bathroom were compact but comfortable. One thing to be careful about is the bathroom shower. Make sure you figure out how the hot and cold settings work before using the shower. Breakfast was really good and they had a vegan option.
- Katharina (8/5): - The bathroom and the room were very small, but clean and quiet in the night. It was a good oportunity for us to experience the busy Portree.
- Katwanya (6/5): - Location was good but dining options limited as most places required reservations prior to stay on the Isle of Skye. The shopping area was limited as well due to shops closing around 4pm or 5pm. The property itself was ok, no frills, you literally got a bed and breakfast. The true essence of a B&B.
- Ross (10/5): - The Tongadale is great value for Money, we had a great overnight stay with clean room, friendly staff and a very tasty breakfast.
- Adam (6/5): - good location, nice room, good breakfast, no option for free parking, quite expensive
- Gary (2/5): - Needs some loving.
Lots of little things that show it's not being cared for. Handle on the window snapped off leaving it stuck slightly open, the edges of the wall paper on the ceiling starting to peal off, TV on the wall didn't work.
Breakfast was nice.
But major thing for me was the live band playing in the bar till 11pm ment zero chance of sleeping they had finished.
- Diana Cecilia (10/5): - Great location, portree is very small but the parking area is close to the hotel. It is also very close to the colorful view of the coast buildings.
It wasn't a problem for us but keep in mind that there is no lift.
Beds where comfortable, staff was very friendly.
Clean bathroom, with good pressure shower.
- Amy (4/5): - The room was incredibly basic— the equivalent of a college dorm room. In addition to the sparseness of the room, our sleep was disrupted by loud noise that permeated the room, including noises from someone in the room above us, who was up at 5:00 am, as well as incredibly loud noises that emanated from the plumbing— it sounded like a freight train.
- Jasmin (8/5): - It was very clean for quite an old building. We booked and stayed in a twin room - it does the job if you're looking to stay near Isle of Skye. Nice shower. Breakfast was good. No parking available.
- Allison (8/5): - Olde worlde establishment
- Mark (8/5): - Ideal for a night stay while in Skye.
- Jason (10/5): - Perfect spot from which to enjoy Pitlochry.
- Glasgow3826 (4/5): Wouldn't stay again! - Booked for 1 night when in Portree but would not stay at the hotel again.
First off the location is great if you want to be near shops/restaurants within Portree it is on the main street so could not get a better location. There is public parking close by which is also handy.
Reception staff very nice and checked us in quickly.
Room very basic and for the price I would expect a bit more. It looked like the corridor and rooms could do with a revamp as very tired!
The main reason for the 'poor' rating is the sleep quality it was just awful. There was quite a lot of noise at the back (kitchen I think) right up to around 11.30pm we were on the first floor and I am guessing over the kitchen. The other reason was the heat in the room it was around 16 degrees outside but inside that room is felt like 100 degrees it was awful! The hotel had provided a fan but was possibly the nosiest fan I have ever heard. Very little sleep was had so would not be going back and will look for alternative accommodation next time .
- Karsyn (10/5): - Very very grateful for the staff here. We unfortunately got in late, and should have called ahead. Luckily someone heard us knocking on the door, and they checked us in after it was closed! Thank God - or we would have been sleeping in the car. Huge shoutout again to this hotel and for helping us out in such a pinch!
- Jason (6/5): - For the price and location in busy Portree I shouldn’t complain, but the stay wasn’t great. The restaurant was convenient and good, and they served a hearty Scottish breakfast. The parking was the biggest problem. With nowhere to park nearby, I had to do so at a car park five minutes away. The noise from the pub below could be heard until late. Part of the Scottish experience.
- Yun (10/5): - Good value hotel with nice location.
- Rajesh (10/5): - Excellent service
- Suresh (8/5): - Good place for a short stay. Frindly people
- Maryam (10/5): So cute! - Recommend! The tongadale hotel was great they offer a lovely breakfast and nice dinner as well. Right in the middle of town and really cute!
- Richard (8/5): - Parking is an issue as well as other properties in this area.
- eliane (6/5): - Very old building. A nice busy pub in the lobby with excellent choices of drinks. The second and third floor are quiet. Room was tiny with a very small shower and difficult to adjust water temp. There was a roach in the room. The best part of this hotel was the dinner atvthe restaurant. It was well prepared, nice variety and delicious vegetarian options. Breakfast was not great. Seems cheap - we asked for bread and recieved one slice each. Coffee was burnt. Hotel is in a very central location.
- Jane (8/5): - *
- Tammie (4/5): - Might be the area but expensive for how run down and small the room and bathroom were. Staff was kind. So loud and awkward trying to get to room through small bar.
- Jessica (6/5): OK for a night - This was a last minute booking and no other hotels had availability. Very old, not updated, and the most bare bones amenities. Tiny room with 3 beds crammed in, a desk, a TV, tiny bathroom with a door that would not latch shut, and a small space to hang coats. The beds were very hard and the pillows were terrible. It was an uncomfortable night, but it was fine for one night as a stop over. The breakfast was included and good, and the pub inside was cute with all very friendly staff.
- DM41Scotland (8/5): A Genuine Small Town Scotland Experience. - A hotel of it's time and full of character, it still has some atmosphere of the 'wild west' of Scotland: I have drank and had great fun in hotels like this all over small town Scotland - I bet it's a hoot in summer. Once upon a time it would have been classed as cheap and cheerful; but now it's inexpensive and cheerful because, post covid, nothing is cheap anymore. The staff are great and genuinely pleased to see you; the food is surprisingly guid. The rooms are small but adequate and are clean with fresh bedding. The hotel, like most, has no lifts. This is not a problem to me so why am I bringing it up? Because dear reader, if you wish to come and enjoy small town Scotland, that mahoosive suitcase that rolls nicely across plaza's and polished marble airport and hotel floors is a problem where there are kerbs, uneven pavements and steep winding stairs that you have to negotiate. I'm not looking at the USA in particular over this, no sirree.
- Heather (10/5): No glam and glitz, but traditional Scottish feel! - This was the best little hotel we stayed in while traveling through Scotland. I was skeptical based on reviews. But it was an efficient hotel. No frills, not fancy, older hotel. Could it use a renovation? Yes. Did it bother us? No!! It was clean. Restaurant was traditional. The staff was super sweet and treated us like family. Very understanding when the Texan had no clue how to turn on a radiator! 😂. We would stay here again in a heartbeat! The experience was worth more than fancy furnishings and glitz. We highly recommend!
- Marcel (8/5): Good experience - Well located and extremely friendly staff. Good quality for money even though the style was overall a bit old fashioned.
The restaurant offered good food and was packed as also locals came there to eat. Also the bar was a great place to connect with some locals.
Only downside is the noise from the other rooms as walls do not really isolate well. But this is probably due to the age of the building.
- Ritainthesky (10/5): Comfortable Stay with a Beautiful View - We had a wonderful experience at the Tongadale Hotel in Portree. Despite being on the 3rd floor without a lift, the stay was comfortable and enjoyable.
The bed was incredibly cozy, providing us with restful nights after exploring the area. Both the room and the bathroom were spotless, which added to the overall comfort. A highlight of our stay was the Velux window in our room, offering a lovely view of the sea—a perfect touch for a relaxing retreat.
Overall, we were very pleased with our stay and would highly recommend the Tongadale Hotel to anyone visiting Portree!
- Stephen (10/5): - Great value
- Jeffrey (10/5): - The old hotel pub and restaurant including staff were outstanding! The food in the restaurant was delicious. Everyone was incredibly friendly. For all these reasons, I return to this property!
- Eve-Annick (6/5): - Good location. The room was very basic but we spent a wonderful evening at the pub in the hotel with the staff and the people there!!
- Bob (10/5): - Right downtown
Complete room with all needed amenities
Cozy bar and restaurant
Friendly staff
- Robin (4/5): - The breakfast was nice, but the hotel was noice, the room was stuffy and limited but all you need.
- Kelsey (10/5): - The staff were incredible! Helpful and kind. Very convenient to walk anywhere in Portree. Older building but very clean. Food was great
- Woon Fun (4/5): - No fridge! Room is extremely small!
- Christine (10/5): - Breakfast and staff were wonderful
- Amy (6/5): - Hotel was a bit worn and the best was a rough sleep but loved Portree and the staff was nice. Walking in and out through a cloud of smokers at the entrance every time sucked though.
- Dave (8/5): Good - Lovely staff, just room are a little dated
- joanne (4/5): - The staff were helpful but the noise of the other residents was too much, it was so noisy.
This place made me cancel the rest of my accommodation on Skye.
The Highlands are better anyway.
- Pat (8/5): - Comfortable bed and delicious breakfast 😋😋
- Graham (6/5): - The property was clean but the room could do with a complete upgrade. Very shabby.
- Tanya (10/5): - Other than The Stairs (a common thing in older buildings) great little spot , staff were friendly and quick to help with any questions. Street parking wasn't easy but there was a long term stay not more than 5 minutes walk away which was good.
- Ian (10/5): - Great Location.
- John (8/5): - This place is right in the middle of Portree. I loved the staff and the location. The only reason I give it a 4 star and not a 5 star is the room was very plain and ordinary. It is convenient to everything around there, and the breakfast in the morning was excellent.
- siiri (10/5): - The staff were really friendly! It was nice having a pub downstairs and live music :) a good athmosphere!
- Helen (8/5): - Didn't like the price, very expensive for what you got, but it is a very old hotel. The main thing for me is it was clean.
- CincyOHTraveler (10/5): Clean and fairly basic (brekfast included) in the heart of Portree - A clean, basic hotel room in the heart of the town! Which includes a hot breakfast! Newer bathroom/shower, towels seemed nice, too. There is no parking, but the town long-term lot is two blocks away and cost 4 pounds for 18 hours. I didn't notice a lift, so we carried our luggage up one flight of stairs. I'd stay there again!
- Cynthia (8/5): - Old hotel with some challenges like lots of stairs. Upgraded rooms and amenities. Full Scottish breakfast included. Staff are friendly. Close to everything.
- Pierre (10/5): - .
- Tammy (10/5): - Tons of shops and restaurants in walking distance, the staff was super friendly, the room was very clean, food there was great for both dinner and breakfast.
- Sergio (10/5): - Staff was excellent , very friendly and efficient. Room was spacious and comfortable .
- Shu-Qiong (8/5): - The hotel has the earliest breakfast time, compared to other hotels I had stayed. I could have breakfast and still had enough time to walk to my day tour meeting point at 8am.
- Neha (6/5): - Noisy street
- saralynni (6/5): No frills, clean, small room - It’s a hotel that feels like a very nice youth hostel. Room was very small with minimal amenities, but was clean and felt safe. Breakfast was fine. Minimal interaction with staff but seemed friendly. There is no lift (elevator) so be prepared to carry your bags up one or two flights of stairs. The location is very central in the town. Despite being above a pub we had no issues with sound. Seems to be standard type accommodations for the town.
- Matthew (8/5): - This was a nice stay in Skye, the rooms were nice and the food was really good. The only downside was the difficulty in parking.
- Joseph (6/5): - Convenient location in town, but the room was quite old.
Separate hot and cold water outlets at the basin in which the water is either very hot or very cold.
- Alessandro (8/5): - I like all of this hotel
- Srinivas (6/5): - Not value for money.
- Doug (8/5): - Right in the centre of Portree - great location!
- Jacqueline (6/5): - Staff was very friendly, check-in desk was difficult to find. Room was clean. Good place to sleep. Finding parking was challenging.
- Vivek (10/5): - Great place great staff and while we were there the pub downstairs had terrific live music. Very reasonably priced given the location in the heart of Portree.
- Julie (10/5): - It is a great base for starting your Skye adventure. The staff is wonderful, the rooms are clean and comfortable (not fancy, but all you need for a night). Nice bar, nice hot breakfast (only goes til 9am though). You can walk to everything in Portree. Be aware there is no elevator and you have to park about 1/4 mile away. But all in all, recommend and would stay again!
- Peter (10/5): - Very charming in center of town
- Markus (6/5): - Rather poor room
- Lloyd (10/5): - Good accommodations
- robmM4711PY (6/5): Isle of Skye hotel - This was a fine place to stay for our time on the isle of Skye. Would describe as pretty basic but everything was very clean, well maintained and in good working order. The adjoining restaurant was quite nice and the folks who worked in the restaurant and bar were very pleasant and tried to make the experience pleasant. I am a tall guy and the bed was small considering I had to sleep with my head at the foot of the bed to be able to plug in my CPAP. Surprisingly I slept well as I think the ocean air made me tired. I would go back just have my expectations in check.
- William (6/5): - Perfectly functional and fine for a brief stopover.
- Kaung Myat Wai (2/5): - The worst thing is we checked in at 10pm and still the room was not cleaned yet. Then they did a quick room service and I highly doubt the cleanliness.
No noise-proof. The door lock is broken. Terrible place.
- Nora2012_12 (6/5): Great location - We stayed only one night here but everything was OK. Location can’t be better as it´s in the main street, half block from the waterfront. There is no parking lot, but you can park in a long stay parking car at three blocks from the hotel where we 5 pounds for like 16 hours. We stayed at the first floor (yes, one stair upstairs with the luggage, but nothing too complicated). Breakfast is OK, room OK and the bathroom is really comfortable.
- S2577FHrobm (4/5): Not much here to rate - The bath and bed are really why you are there. And honestly, it’s just 2 stars.
Old carpet stairs lead to a room that is as simple as a level above a hostel. From one screw loosely holding on the room door handle, to the last guest’s hair we needed to wash down the super slow draining shower before using, there isn’t much here to rate.
The included breakfast was nice. It offsets the stale beer smell as you walk in.
- Mairi (10/5): Overnight Stay Tongadale Hotel - Enjoyed our overnight stay at the Tongadale Hotel. Second visit and going back in September. Had a meal in the restaurant, menu had a good selection, was freshly prepared and reasonably priced. Rooms clean and fresh. Breakfast could have been warmer but again good selection to choose from. Overall good value.
- Katrina (6/5): - Very relaxed, good for a stop over night. Basic but ok.
- Charmayne (10/5): Loved it! - Breakfast and restaurant food was fabulous, staff were fabulous. Just pay overnight parking only 5 minutes walk away. It’s summer, our room was quite warm but I removed the doona from the cover and left the window open. Being above a pub on a Saturday night I thought it would be noisy but we didn’t have any issue. I can’t wait to go back.
- Lynda (8/5): - Tongadale is a very convenient hotel with good facilities. It has a bustling bar and live music. The staff were professional and friendly.
- Debra (10/5): - Friendly staff and good food
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very central in Portree. Comfortable, if a little dated in its decor. All the staff were very friendly and worked hard to help us when needed. Breakfast below average.
- ANDREW (8/5): - Ideal place to explore lovely Skye and Portree from.
- Brydon (8/5): - Phenomenal location, right in the middle of town and easily walkable to all the greatest bars and restaurants. Room and bathroom were a bit small, but not crazily.
- Alan (8/5): Decent place, a little over priced (but it’s Skye) - This was a decent place to lay our head. Room was clean. Food was good. Lot of noise from the surrounding venues/streets at night.
- Yvonne (6/5): - -
- jsknc (6/5): Clean and great location - Because we are on Skye it is rustic here. It’s clean but has no AC. The stairs are very awkward carrying luggage up and down 4 flights. The breakfast is okay. It is located in a very good spot. The overhead light would go in and off. Not sure if that’s a wiring problem or a haunting. I would stay here again just to see Skye
- Siok Hoon (6/5): - Tongale hotel is right in the city centre and 2min walking to the colorhouse viewpoint. The tap is a big issue. The hot and cold water comes from different tap and the hot water is scalding hot and the cold is ice cold. No mixing hence we have to stick to washing our face and brushing tea with ice water. Otherwise nice having bf provided
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Clean hotel. Definitely on the cheaper-feeling side. Bed wasnt very comfortable.
- Bingbing (6/5): - The location is perfect and walking distance to the restaurants and supermarket however the facilities are kind of old and no lift but stairs only to the guest rooms. For one night only it shouldn't be a problem.
- Andrew (8/5): - Breakfast was good.
- Ayman (8/5): - Nice area
- Kathleen (8/5): Cute - Very cozy room, had all we needed. It was very clean.
- Leave (8/5): - Not fancy, but Good location in center of Portree. A little amusing going thru the pub to get to rooms Parking available nearby. Restaurant and pub pleasant enough.
