The hotel’s location is excellent, and the wellness facilities, including the steam room, sauna, and swimming pool, were a great addition to the stay. What I did not like about the hotel was that some facilities and services did not meet the expectations of a 5-star experience. The steam room was out of order during my stay, and there were no staff available in the changing room to assist guests. The towel area was also difficult to locate due to the dim lighting. In addition, the coffee and tea machine at breakfast was out of service for all three days, and the beverage selection after dinner was quite limited, with many menu items unavailable. I was also disappointed that the reception staff could not provide a proper running track map despite it being promoted on the hotel website, which felt unprofessional.

• Emily Ross (10/5): - I love the Sukhothai vibe - a beautiful sense of Asian modern minimalism with extraordinary five-star pool, sauna and wellness services. The spacious rooms are beautifully appointed with chic soft furnishings, generous layout, desk and seating areas, generous wardrobe space and storage (hallelujah) wonderful bathrooms with separate WC, deep soaking tub and luxurious oversized shower. Housekeeping services are top notch with traditional tea at turndown and the concierge experience was above and beyond. The spa has dyson hairdryers and other amenities so you can dress up after a session in the steam room. We slept so well here and enjoyed the brilliant porte cochere access for all our sightseeing and adventures in the city and the deluxe shopping precinct for fresh juices, excellent coffee and all the designers (if you are into that) are on your doorstep. The clientele here is very international and uber cool - the lobby is a united nations of interesting global travellers and super stylish locals. Such a great hotel brand! The breakfast is not exciting. For some reason many doors in the hotels rooms are designed without latches so they have a habit of falling open!

• andridewe (4/5): A Clean Room, But a Cold Welcome – Not What Titanium Status Deserves - As a Titanium member, I arrived at approximately 5:00 PM, only to be told that my room was not yet ready. Despite having already completed check-in, I was asked to wait over twenty minutes. There was no warm welcome, and the front desk did not offer an apology initially. I was directed to wait in the lobby, but the seating area was extremely limited and already occupied by several other guests. Traveling alone with two young children, I received no assistance or acknowledgment from the hotel regarding a more suitable place to wait. It was only after I suggested the bar area that we were able to sit somewhat comfortably—on the outdoor terrace. To the hotel’s credit, the room itself was quite nice and clean. The more disappointing experience occurred the following morning, when I went to the reception desk to add breakfast and kindly request a late checkout—a published benefit for Titanium members. Without any attempt to accommodate, the receptionist immediately declined. He then called his manager, and while speaking on the phone, he began laughing and chuckling as he explained to the manager that “this guest” was requesting a late checkout. He may have assumed I did not understand Mandarin, but I understood enough to recognize the lack of professionalism. I calmly reminded him that as a Titanium member, I was hoping the hotel would at least make an effort to accommodate my family’s needs. Only after I raised my voice—prompted by his dismissive and mocking tone—did the situation change. I pointed out that it was unprofessional and disrespectful to laugh at a guest’s reasonable request, especially given that I had already waited past 5:00 PM for my room the previous evening. Only then did another receptionist step in and offer a 3:00 PM late checkout. To add to the frustration, my room key stopped working by 2:00 PM. For a five-star property, and especially as a first-time guest at this brand, I expected a vastly different standard of service—one that reflects genuine care, professionalism, and respect for loyalty members. Unfortunately, my experience fell far short of that expectation.

• BluffRunner (8/5): Decent stay. Convenient. - The rooms are pretty small and quite a letdown after moving from identically priced rooms at the fabulous Waldorf Astoria on the Bund. Everything in the hotel seems to have a grey motif and all the signage is very hard to see. Some of the doors are pocketed and you wouldn’t know they are there until you get cold getting out of the shower and feel desperate. From over function seems to be the rule. Very austere and Presbyterian. The breakfast is good enough but isn’t elaborate. If they run out of something, just ask the staff. The staff in general are very friendly and accommodating. I can’t say the same about the manager at the check in desk who seems imperious and contemptuous of guests, even Lifetime Hilton Diamond VIPs. I didn’t like his treatment of the staff. The hotel is in a really great area and the accessibility to the adjacent mall and thereby to the metro was a real convenience. The lobby bar is fabulous but it doesn’t seem to be used. We had to go to the very small Zuk bar which had great staff. The gym was very well equipped and fun to use.

• happy50more (8/5): Well deserved Small Hotel Award - What a delightful stay! From the moment we arrived, the attentive doorman set a welcoming tone, followed by a wonderfully smooth check-in. My room was spacious and thoughtfully designed—so user-friendly. I must compliment the property's signature aroma; it’s a fantastic, sensory touch that creates such a pleasant atmosphere throughout. The environmental ethos here is also strong and much appreciated. Breakfast was a real highlight with its great variety of choices, and the restaurant staff’s warm greetings made every meal start happily. While the live station chef could be a bit more proactive in engaging, the room service order taker was, on the other hand, extremely courteous. Our only tiny suggestion for an already great experience would be to consider upgrading the in-room device chargers. We truly enjoyed our time and can’t wait to return

• Angelika (9/5): Definitely worth a stay when in Shanghai. - We had a very pleasant stay at the Sukhothai hotel. The hotel itself is very modern and the materials used are of high quality. We were upgraded to the loft suites (top floor) and the room and especially the bathroom was incredible. Also the breakfast was great and offered a broad variation of different cuisines.

• Stephen (6/5): Experienced Traveller - Honest Review - When we had some issues with a few rooms the staff and duty managers were all incredibly friendly and helpful. They were very quick and did their best to apologise, fix things and find solutions, which goes a long way! The interior design is beautiful curated throughout the hotel. The standard rooms are actually the nicest in my opinion. Bath tubs in some of the rooms are lovely. The location is fantastic, and as many have said, the connection to the nearby luxury mall is a nice touch. The value for money feels fairly good (certainly compared to an equivalent hotel in the UK) though prices are a lot higher by Shanghai averages. In spite of other reviews, I found all the staff's English to be very good, from the bell boys to the managers (and significantly better than my Chinese) Encountered a few rooms which were hot and stuffy, but from changing rooms so often could see that this was not the case for all, so seems like pot luck. The air con systems have some issues room by room. Our first would randomly turn itself up from lowest (and quietest) fan speed to full power during the night, repeatedly waking me up with the noise. I also had to turn the temp down to lower than necessary (16-18°) to feel like it was actually making a difference, but in other rooms setting to the standard 22° they keep it at was fine. To the hotel's credit, they sent a manager and an engineer almost immediately to try to fix it, before moving us to another room for the night. If your room is near a lift, you can hear it beep as it arrives to the floor from your room, same with neighbours using their key cards. You can't hear the outside world, but internal soundproofing could use improvement. A small nitpick is also that the fire alarms have a blinking green light, and many of them are situated directly above the beds, a small detail but just doesn't feel well thought out compared to everything else in the room designs. The breakfast price is high, but seems good quality, however you can find equally tasty and better value at the mall opposite too. The last issue, is that Booking.com states this place has a hot tub, it does not, info needs amending.

• Valentin (10/5): Great rooms and location with extremely friendly and helpful staff! - Nice, large and perfectly clean room. Free non-alcoholic drinks from the fridge in the room, that gets refilled daily, plus two bottles of water. The staff was extremely nice and helpful. The location is also great, as it is close to a metro station with multiple lines, including line 2, which connects directly to two airports (including Pudong International Airport) and the high-speed railway station. It is also located next to a large mall with many shops and restaurants, and great cafes and bubble tea stores. Basically nothing. To nitpick: The king-size bed has only one large blanket and the pillows were not great for me (this is subjective, my wife did not have a problem with the pillows).
