• Darren (9/5): We liked that the rooms were over a pub. - Good location. Food was amazing. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were lovely and the shower was powerful. The glasses for orange juice need a clean. We were woken early on the Saturday by them repairing the path outside. This started at 7am.
• Tim (10/5): Marvellous in Matlock - Red Lion ticks all the boxes - Central location in Matlock close to shops and restaurants as well as friendly staff and the best room in the property - room 6 where both the bedroom and en-suite were generous sizes. Nothing negative to say
• Julia (6/5): Facilities need updating especially as it was a safety concern with having no smoke detector in room - Breakfast was the best thing about this place. No smoke detector in our room. Too much noise and cigarette smoke coming from the beer garden into our room from the only window that could be opened. The TV only received 6 channels that kept dropping out all the time due to poor signal.

• Janet (9/5): Great location, staff & evening meals ! - The location, welcome & staff are great. The evening meals were absolutely fabulous! The 2 steak meal offer, teriyaki salmon & pork tenderloin were some of the best meals we've eaten, at a pub, for a very long time. We all would highly recommend them. Full English breakfast comes highly recommended too. Our only comment would be that room 2 would benefit from somewhere to put wash bags, in the bathroom.

• Lynda (10/5): A very friendly local pub that goes above and beyond for all their guests. - The whole experience of staying here is so enjoyable, we stay at least once a year! The food is amazing, great choice of breakfast items and excellent quality local foods. The pub is very popular with locals too, they are so friendly and just to the experience. The staff are absolutely brilliant, nothing is too much for them to make your stay enjoyable. They also have their own micro brewery. Ales that they sell in the pub and you can buy to take home. All in all just a lovely place to stay in a fantastic location, on hand for all the local attractions. I really don't think that there's anything about the Red Lion that we don't like. We just find it suits us down to the ground.

• Matthew (10/5): - The Red Lion is a very welcoming local pub in Matlock just a 5 minute walk from the centre through the lovely park , Lee and his team went above and beyond to ensure my girlfriend’s surprise birthday weekend was very special even organising some flowers and cake presented at Breakfast we would most certainly be returning ! 10/10 👌 Nothing it was perfect 👌

Location was in a safe area in walking distance of nice bars etc. If we were being really picky the bathroom door didn't stay closed and if you don't like pub atmosphere, it's quite loud til midnight. Didn't bother us as we went out etc but might not be for everyone

Staff were lovely. Breakfast was great. Kitchen was being refurbished so no food. However breakfast was still available.
• mary (4/5): - The rooms were nice warm comfortable and clean We had paid for having breakfast, we're told when we arrived what time breakfast is served , to only find out later on in the evening the kitchen was being refreshed and we couldn't have breakfast. I only booked about a week before sinthis musy have been known then but still offering that as an option! We booked a place we could have breakfast to relax we didn't want to be glimg out looking for some where to eat every morning . Also booked because the facilities listed you could have an evening to.fimd out when we sat down to order there was no food available. There were even dinner menus in the bedroom still !

• Colin (9/5): Despite the poor weather, we enjoyed our stay and were able to explore the area by car and bus. - All staff were friendly and approachable. Breakfast was exceptional. We found the bed very comfortable. The room appeared to be freshly decorated - the colours were very 'restful'. The furniture in our room was a bit tatty, especially the bedside tables. The entrance to the rooms from the public area was a bit 'tired'.

• Guest (8/5): Would definitely return and recommend if anyone in the area - Lovely location, parking at the rear which you access from the next street short walk (5-10 min) to the town and local markets. Shampoo nd conditioner samples bottles available to save you taking any plus an hair dryer in the drawer and tea and coffee facilities in the room, quiet location and really lovely food, we had a carvery on the Sunday and breakfast both were excellent Attention to detail on cleaning with thick cobwebs around the coving on the ceiling and curtain pole which was first thing you see when you lie down and the lamp was on them, also tv only had limited tv channels even after re-tuning it as only had access to channels through the antenna Ariel and wallpaper coming away from the wall. Bed was a bit hard for us but not a deal breaker still slept and you still return and recommend.

Good quality meals in restaurant. Excellent beer including Moot Ales brewed on site. Room, though compact, had decent facilities. Noise and light in bedroom. Streetlight outside shone through thin curtains, making room very light. This room (over entrance) also full of noise from bar until after midnight. So not the best place for an early night.

• JB5915 (8/5): Very enjoyable - Staff very friendly and welcoming. Very convenient for walking into Matlock and Hall Leys Park. Door on bathroom didn't shut properly. Wanted to book for one night in early December to visit the Victorian Market. Were disappointed when told we had to book 2 nights minimum which unfortunately we couldn't do due to prior engagement. Would have liked to stay here again butt are now looking for somewhere else.

• Peter (8/5): The Red Lion is an excellent base for exploring Matlock and surrounding towns - We had a very pleasant 4-night stay at the Red Lion, using it as a base while we explored local towns and attractions, and enjoyed a couple of evenings in the busy but friendly bar. The breakfasts were excellent quality and value, and the pub even has its own on-site brewery (Moot Ales Brewery). The bar sold a selection of beers, including 3 of its own Moot beers. The pub’s car park had limited spaces (about 12), which were available to all patrons, whether staying overnight at the pub or not. In an ideal world there would have been spaces specifically for those staying overnight, but it was only a minor issue on one brief occasion.

A jug of water with the jugs of orange and milk would have saved requesting a glass of water at breakfast. Lovely garden and colourful plants. Food service was quick and good selection of ale and whisky. Coffee from the machine was good. Would have been useful if the power point was near the mirror in the room, would have assisted when using the very good hairdryer.

• Coulter (8/5): Exactly what I need for a short break to Derbyshire for The Music Festivals I visit each time I come - I didn't have breakfast in The Red Lion. I had to travel to Swadlincote, on the Leicestershire border on Friday, & I just bought some food from the shops for my journey on the buses & trains, to get there. I noticed they have a pool table now, which I like, but I never had any time to play it. The prices are very reasonable for a short break, & it's not too far from the shops in Matlock. I also travelled into Cromford. I have friends who live there. They had a good bar as well. Everything was fine. It suits me to book The Red Lion the next time I travel down from Scotland, if it's available. ( p.s. I can't add photo's. I didn't take my camera with me).
