Guest Reviews
- Catherine (10/5): Warm friendly accommodation that is a Kyoto experience in itself. - Traditional Japanese inn in a quiet residential area of Kyoto run by Tome and her husband, who both speak excellent English, and go out of their way to be welcoming and attentive hosts . The building is beautifully maintained, full of antiques and has a charming central garden courtyard. The daily breakfasts were fine dining standard - the best meals we had in Kyoto- sensational. Tome gave us daily tips on places to visit - places out of the way that we wouldn't have found otherwise, helped with a daily itinerary that suited the weather, and booked local restaurants for us in the evening. She even washed some of our clothes without charge. If we come back again, I will book Ryokan Mugan again. Really can't think of anything. Worth noting that beds are futon style so may be tricky for those with difficult mobility as low set.
- Iryna (10/5): A truly memorable and authentic Kyoto experience with exceptional hospitality. - Our stay at Ryokan Mugen was truly exceptional. Our host, Tome, was incredibly warm, welcoming, and charming, and made us feel at home from the very first moment. The atmosphere of the ryokan, the beautiful room, and the peaceful location were all absolutely perfect.
Tome also recommended several local places to eat, and every recommendation turned out to be amazing — some of the best experiences we had in Kyoto.
The next time we return to Kyoto, staying here will be an absolute must. We highly recommend Ryokan Mugen and sincerely hope to come back again soon. No
- Natalija (10/5): If you get a chance to book this ryokan, do it. - The room, the vibe, the host - everything was so lovely! The room was so beautiful and had everything you need for a short stay in Kyoto. Tome, the host, was so helpful and kind and made our stay unforgettable!
- ALBERTO (10/5): Alojamiento excepcional -
- Judy (10/5): - Tome and her husband helped us so much. They had great ideas and were so helpful
The rooms and amenities were fabulous. I loved the special little treats at night and the gorgeous dressing gowns.
We felt secure at all times. Nothing! It was all wonderful
- Emma (10/5): Incredible stay, the warmth from Tome is felt everywhere in the property it really is a special place to stay. We felt s - Everything! The room, the breakfast, the location, the peacefulness and mostly the host - Tome being so welcoming fun and positive.
- Maria celeste (10/5): A true game changer in Kyoto - This ryokan was the highlight of our stay in Kyoto. Beautiful, peaceful, and perfectly cared for—but what truly made the difference was the host.
Their suggestions were incredible: thoughtful, unique, and perfectly tailored, leading us to experiences we never would have found on our own. Everything was shared with genuine heart, intelligence, and a deep love for the city.
Thanks to them, our entire vacation changed for the better. This wasn’t just a place to stay—it completely elevated our trip. Highly recommended.
- Rahul (10/5): - Great location and host.
- Janeen (10/5): Our Best Stay in Japan By Far! - All four of our party agreed this has been our favorite stay in Japan. The Ryokan is clean, comfortable and since it’s recently renovated, feels new. Breakfast each day was an extravagant treat. The little bar one evening was also lots of fun. Depending on our schedule, Tume made sure we had plenty of food and drinks before we set out in the morning. Tume is a great host and concierge. She not only has great sightseeing recommendations, but is a tremendous help on the practical aspects of managing buses, trains, restaurant reservations and directions. If this is a first time visit to Kyoto, she can make your stay interesting and much less stressful. Because so many extra services are included in the price, the Ryokan turns out to be an excellent value. Highly recommended if you’re able to secure a reservation. We liked everything except having to say goodbye.
- Constanze (10/5): -
- Andrea (10/5): - Simply one of the best stays we’ve had anywhere in all our travelling and certainly a highlight of our trip to Japan! Tome truly went above and beyond to ensure we got the most out of our short visit to Kyoto, including suggesting (and arranging) our sight seeing and dining options! We had such fun in the speakeasy too! Thanks Tome.
- Smith (10/5): Truly the best hotel I’ve ever been to. A once in a lifetime experience . Spiritual and mesmerizing , do not pass up ! - Everything Was only there for a day :(
- Bryan (10/5): a most excellent experience--felt welcome and cared for! - everything--breakfast and room and service and support and owners were beyond excellent! A most charming experience--cant say enough nice things!
- Caitlin (10/5): Excellent host - From the moment you arrive, the host was exceptional. Serving tea and orienting us with the area on a map, providing suggestions of what to do on our stay. The ryokan is a very cool building - former kimono shop. She served an amazing breakfast on a beautiful array of antique dishwater. She also offers an amazing whiskey spread while playing vinyl records in her bar! The former vault to protect the kimonos. Loved everything down to the colorful slippers. Bikes available too. Not in the downtown but we liked that.
- Maksim (10/5): A wonderful stay with a very caring host and an authentic, peaceful atmosphere - The owner of Ryokan Tome is incredibly caring and attentive. She has created an authentic atmosphere that truly immerses you in traditional Japan. The only minor point is the use of shared slippers. Individual ones might be more comfortable for some guests.
- DE LA ROCHEFOUCAULD (8/5): -
- Valerie (10/5): One of the most beautiful places I have ever been! -
- Freddie (10/5): -
- Paul (10/5): Just book and it will massively exceed your expectations - Amazing ryokan. The room, breakfast, location are all exceptional but what makes this one of the best places we have stayed in 45 years of travel is the hosts. Tome-san makes it seem like you are staying with a friend. Her warmth, advice, recommendations are superb. We just wished to have stayed longer. We will though return. If in Kyoto this is the place to stay. Nothing
- James (10/5): - Beautiful room, breakfast was great with a bit of variation each day. Nice quiet area with a lot of local restaurants and handy for public transport to go anywhere else. Tome is the best, very helpful and. friendly and made the stay all the more enjoyable, she gave us plenty of recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing which always hit the spot. Checking out!
- Gilder (10/5): A special place, and a host we will remember fondly forever. - Incredibly privileged to have stayed here. Tome was the perfect host & we enjoyed every aspect of her beautiful Ryokan. She was there to greet us when our taxi pulled up & couldn't have done more for us during our short stay. We wanted a traditional Ryokan experience and couldn't have asked for a more comfortable, spacious, beautifully kept room or surroundings. A must stay if you are in Kyoto!
- Giovanni (10/5): Perfect for a full imersion into the Japanese culture with an exceptional host. - It is clean, offers a great breakfast, is comfortable and stylish and much more. Nothing
- Sarah (10/5): Beautiful place to stay with a fantastic host. - Beautiful Ryoken & lovely room. Very good size with comfy beds and lovely bathroom. Good amenities provided. Tome is an excellent host and helped us plan our 3 days in Kyoto according to the weather explaining which buses to get to see what we wanted to see. Tome’s hobby room, a beautiful whiskey bar, was a fantastic extra!
- Amy (10/5): - Fantastic stay, lovely hosts who were extremely helpful with planning trips around the local area and very welcoming!
- Arjen (10/5): A hidden gem experience!! - Absolute wonderful experience. Mugen is a hidden gem in Kyoto. The rooms, the service, the personal touch, the little whiskey bar, the breakfast……I would prefer Mugen over any 5 star luxurious hotel immediately. Thanks so much Tome, for making our Kyoto stay a memory for life. Arjen Welsch None
- Joshua (10/5): - First of all! The hosts, Tome in particular, were so wonderful, warm and welcoming.
Then, the space itself is beautiful and clean, the breakfast was amazing, and all the tips and pointers given about Kyoto were extremely helpful.
Would recommend to anyone to stay here! All great!

- Davide (10/5): -
- Isabel (10/5): The best stay in Japan and the best host ever. - If you get the chance to experience a stay in Mugen Ryokan then you should most definitely take it, our only regret was that we only scheduled one night here.
Tome is a natural at making you feel at home and welcome. Not only is the Ryokan immaculate but Tome goes above and beyond to make your stay here is special. Whatever interests you may have or cuisines you may want to try, she'll more than likely know someone who can make it happen as she seems to know everyone in Kyoto!
She managed to reserve us a table at an amazing restaurant where we were the only tourists and the food was absolutely incredible.
The next day, she had a mini itinerary planned for us before we had to catch our train and let us use the bicycles so we could quickly get to all the places.
If we ever make it back to Japan, we are definitely going to spend more time here.
- Julie (10/5): A beautifully finished Ryokan with an especially personal and friendly atmosphere. - The personal touch that was added by the owners, especially Tome, who was so enthusiastic about helping us with anything we needed and suggesting places to go.
- Kristy (10/5): This is a superb ryokan with an excellent host. -
- Nansiri (10/5): Cozy stay with deli food (and drink) - My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Mugen. It is situated in a lovely neighborhood, only 15 min-walk to Nijo-jo castle and it was quite easy to roam around as bus stops are like 5-min walk away. The room was beautifully crafted and cozy. I personally loved the view of the little garden from our big window. The amenities in the room, including the washroom were of high quality. The breakfast went beyond par. In fact it was the best breakfast during our stay in Japan, in terms of taste, presentation, variety. Lastly, I'd like to mention Tome's restaurant and sightseeing recommendations were very useful and practical. While we didn't drink, we enjoyed the atmosphere of Tome's personal bar :) Really appreciated her generous hospitality. I'd certainly recommend this place to friends if they go to visit Kyoto. Nothing.

- Deb (10/5): Great location, stunning little Ryokan and Tome the host was an absolute delight! - Tome’s Ryokan was absolutely delightful. I couldn’t fault it in any way. I had read all the reviews and it sounded so amazing that I booked it. It was just as good as the reviews and even better! From the gorgeous rooms and comfy beds, to the incredible traditional breakfasts that were the highlight of my whole stay in Japan, to Tome’s hospitality, her incredible walking distance restaurants (one was a chefs choice dinner, only 6 guests and cooked in front of us!) to having long chats with her in her private speak easy and sipping sake! The whole trip was just wonderful!!! Thank you Tome for an incredible and memorable stay. Hopefully we will be back one day or you’ll be back in Australia for some Vegemite toast with us!! ❤️🙏 Zero!
- Nolan (10/5): Calm, quaint, fulfilling trip! - Tome and her husband were incredibly accommodating and knowledgeable about their area! She was so kind and helped us plan our trip, and even introduced us to some drinks in her small bar. Absolutely nothing. It was great!!
- Michelle (10/5): One of the most memorable places I've ever stayed - Tome and her husband are such fantastic hosts. Tome herself is truly one of the most warm and enthusiastic people I have ever met. The love and care that they have both poured into their ryokan really shines through -- in the decorations, the food, the sake tasting, the beautiful bar space, the antique store, and everything that they do. We enjoyed borrowing their bikes and getting recommendations from Tome on shops, restaurants, and temples away from the tourist traps. As a result, we got such an in-depth and authentic view of Kyoto -- now one of my favorite cities in the world. WOULD DEFINITELY COME BACK TO RYOKAN MUGEN!
- Tamara (10/5): Tome was an amazing host from the moment we arrived and all the beautiful details made Kyoto magic. - Overall vibe, small details, room was beautiful.
- Clarissa (10/5): Beautiful ryokan in a quiet area, friendly hosts and delicious breakfast! - We had a wonderful stay here at Ryokan Mugen. Tome was extremely helpful with giving us local recommendations and so kind. We loved the hidden bar, renting the bikes and the wonderful breakfast. 10000% will be back. Thank you! Nothing, wish we could stay for longer!
- Barnum (10/5): Boutique experience. Highest level of hospitality - I like everything about this place
- Cload (10/5): -
- BLJ (10/5): Ryoken Mugen should be on your list, it’s a gem! - The owners are wonderful, and they create an inviting atmosphere. Traditional Japanese breakfast, help with planning our days and transportation, and the hidden whiskey bar are a few of the stand out memories. My husband and I would absolutely visit again and will recommend Ryoken Mugen. Absolutely nothing.
- VladSG (10/5): -
- Joaquin (10/5): 100% recommend - Incredible traditional breakfast.
- Jessica (10/5): -
- Paul (10/5): The best part of our trip to Japan. Mugen magic - The stay was blissfully pleasant and enjoyable. The host was simply the best. Mugen is the best place to stay and everyone must try it. We loved every part of it Nothing. Everything was just perfect
- Daniel (10/5): A special experience in a once in a lifetime hotel - We had read the prior reviews and knew this was a highly rated property however staying here the experience still went beyond our expectations. Tome is brilliant and is not only such a nice person but is very helpful with different tips and recommendations across Kyoto. Whether it be delicious local restaurants or antique markets she was always willing to help. This feels like a 5 star boutique hotel, with a customer experience that is of the highest level. The breakfasts were special and both the presentation and quality 10/10. We had read the location was slightly out the way but we didn’t find this to be the case, you can access everything easily and you are central to all the attractions. More so there are very nice local bakeries, restaurants and shops a walking distance to the hotel. Nothing
- Jason (10/5): - Everyone about the stay was wonderful. I had high expectations reading the other reviews and my expectations were still well and truly exceeded. Tome was so friendly and helpful and gave us some great recommendations. A beautiful and calm place to get away from the hustle and bustle.
We will stay here again hopefully next year!
- Max (10/5): -
- Elena (10/5): Amazing experience at lovely ryokan with the most attentive and caring hostess - I can’t describe how thankful I am for the hostess’s hospitality. She went above and beyond to help us have the most memorable stay in Kyoto. She would create a personal itinerary for our stay each day, provided us with everything we needed, did it with so much kindness. The property is beautiful and the breakfast was delicious. Our favorite part was the bar - a private bar for the guests- we had so much fun there. We will definitely go back and will recommend all our friends to stay at this ryokan. Everything was excellent
- Ava (10/5): - The owner was incredibly friendly and attentive to all of our needs. She helped us plan each of our days and gave us super helpful recommendations. The traditional Japanese breakfast that she and her husband provided was also so delicious! We absolutely loved this place and would highly recommend it to anyone staying in Kyoto.
- Janet (10/5): Couldn’t have asked any more of hosts- they were fantastic- suggested places to go and were so helpful. The breakfast wa - It was beautifully renovated, comfortable and very clean. I liked everything!
- Ezgi (10/5): - The staff were amazing! So helpful and always smiling. We felt very welcomed
- Shauna (10/5): -
- Frank (9/5): Lovely Stay at Mugen! - Warm and hospitable residence that left us with great memories.
- Christophe (10/5): Absolutely fantastic experience - highlight of our trip - We were treated exceptionally well and writing that review is a genuine pleasure.
Our stay at Ryokan Mugen felt special thanks because Tome (our host) and her husband put so much thought and warmth into welcoming their guests. To name a few:
- The ryokan (a former workshop) itself is beautiful. and the view over the Japanese garden looks fantastic. The place has been renovated with a lot of taste and has a lot of character. The room was larger than I expected
- The location is slightly out of the city centre but nicely located to visit several of Kyoto's main sights (Nijo-jo, Golden Pavilion, etc). The neighborhood is very cute - old houses, plenty of small shops, etc
- The breakfast was really great - tasty, varied, healthy and properly Japanese
- Tome spent a lot of time helping us plan our stay in Kyoto (and further!). She really knows the city well and suggested places that we would otherwise have (unfairly) missed
- Her restaurant recommendations were great. Here again, she suggested great places that otherwise would have flown below our radar
- A lot of small attentions - for instance providing us hand warmers
- She spent time chatting with us in the bar, and it felt special Nothing. A huge thank you
- Lou (10/5): -
- Jesse (10/5): -
- Ben (10/5): Will come back again - Highly recommended, not only the logging itself is of quality - very clean, comfy, and tidy; but the owner (Tome) is welcoming and considerate, I feel genuinely happy and lucky to be able to know her.
We stayed in Japan for a total of 8 days at different locations, the breakfast of this ryokan (prepared by Tome) ranks the best among anywhere else. Tome actually would get up early and prepare the food/drink for you. The room is very comfy and we found ourselves culturally immersed in it when we stayed there.
Great location as well, a couple of really nice Japanese restaurants (Tome will let you know) within walking distance, and also close to bus station. Overall this exceeded our expectations, would give my five-star to the Ryokan and also to the owner Tome who made this possible and left us with the unique experience.
- Noelle (10/5): Ryokan Muger is an exceptional lodging option that elevated our experience of Kyoto. - Based on all the reviews of Ryokan Mugen, our stay in Kyoto was the most anticipated of our lodgings during our trip to Japan and the reality exceeded those expectations. Our room was beautiful with a goregous view out to the garden and the breakfast provided each day was delicious. What made our stay superlative was our host. Tome was absolutely lovely -- from her recommendations for off-the-beaten-path sightseeing to making spectacular local dinner reservations for us to hosting us in her absolutely gorgeous private bar. We couldn't have asked for a better experience, truly. We would go back to Japan just to stay there again. Absolutely nothing.
- nicola (10/5): Eine tolle Entdeckung im traditionellen Stil ! Großartige Gastgeber- wir kommen wieder ! - Super freundliche Gastgeber!
- Matthew (10/5): An exceptional traditional Japanese Ryokan stay in Kyoto, hosted by the most charming and hospitable couple, 10/10. - - hospitality from hosts/owners
- quality all around (food, amenities, drink) - nothing we didn't like
- Emily (10/5): - Can’t say enough about how brilliant this place is. Tome and her family are exquisite hosts. I’ve never seen so many reviews of a hotel mention the owners so frequently before… but now I understand why. Time was warm, welcoming, funny, extremely helpful, and unlike anyone we’ve ever met. Staying here was the best part of our trip. Can’t recommend it more highly.
- Tarah (10/5): The most exceptional travel experience of our lives — all thanks to Tome. - My husband and I have traveled a lot, but nothing… NOTHING has ever compared to our stay at Ryokan Mugen in Kyoto. It’s owned by Tome and her husband, and from the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn’t going to be an ordinary stay. Tome is one of those rare people whose warmth, humor, and genuine kindness completely transform a trip. She didn’t just host us, she shaped our entire Japan experience. Tome welcomed us like old friends. She shared her family’s history, how they poured their heart into renovating the ryokan, and the love she has for both her home and Japan was visible in everything she did. Every detail reflected her care: the immaculate, beautifully designed room, comfortable and cozy bathroom, thoughtful amenities, the tea and treats she surprised us with, and the personal connection she took time to build. Those moments will stay with us forever. Her Ryokan gave us a sense of calm during an otherwise whirlwind trip, a place where we could truly breathe.
Aside from the incredible room with the most comfortable beds of our entire trip, one of our favorite parts was her beautiful back bar area: cozy, stunning, and full of character. Tome taught us about local sake and gin (crafted with the precision only Japan delivers) and spent real, unhurried time serving welcome drinks we’ll never forget, making us feel like the only guests in the world.
Breakfasts were unforgettable, beautifully presented, delicious beyond measure, and filled with her passion for caring for others. We were genuinely excited to wake up each morning just to see what she’d created. Her attentiveness was the kind that can’t be manufactured. The ryokan itself is gorgeous- serene, meticulously preserved, and perfectly located for exploring Kyoto by bike, visiting nearby cafes, and finding hidden gems. On her recommendation, we visited a local sushi restaurant owned by her dear friend, which became one of our favorite nights in Japan. Literally nothing.
- Olivier (10/5): Incroyable -
- Kathryn (10/5): Just amazing. If you get the chance, stay here - Everything!!!! The room was authentic Japanese, clean and comfortable. Tome’s bar was amazing. Breakfasts were super good and Tome couldn’t have been more helpful. We would love to go back!!!
- Andrea (10/5): Perfect stay in Kyoto - Everything. Accommodation is newly renovated house from Edo period and very nicely designed. They paid attention to details. Host is great, can recommend daily activities and has a great bar. :) -
- katherine (10/5): Absolute perfection for a memorable stay in Kyoto - We LOVED our host, Tome. The room was spacious and the traditional Japanese housing was beautiful. Tome goes above and beyond for every guest, every time. The location was a quick walk to the bus stops and an easy cab ride to the train station. The daily traditional breakfast was also amazing. Would happily stay again and recommend to anyone. The highlight was the host! Nothing
- Peter (10/5): Perfect way to experience the beauty of the real Japan. - Tome (the host) was so welcoming and helpful, with excellent attention to detail and great suggestions for local attractions and dining. The ryokan was exactly the traditional Japanese experience that I was looking for. Conveniently located for visiting the beautiful temples, shrines and gardens of Kyoto. Breakfast each day was wonderful. I could not be more happy, and would rate it 6 stars if I could. Very highly recommended 🙂 Nothing comes to mind given how great the experience was.
- Mahena (10/5): - Such a lovely place, with the kindest people!
Thank you for your hospitality and support!
- Sheila (10/5): A highlight of our Japan trip! - Tome-san and her husband were the most thoughtful and gracious hosts. Their cozy hotel is warm and welcoming. Our breakfast was traditional Japanese and delicious – a perfect way to start a busy day of adventure. She helped us come up with a plan of action for sightseeing (by neighborhood) so that we weren’t overwhelmed and could make the most of our time there. We took advantage of the beautiful weather and had great fun navigating their bikes easily around the streets of Kyoto. Tome-san also provided recommendations for her favorite restaurants - they were outstanding and not touristy. She really is the perfect hostess and I highly recommend staying at Ryokan Mugen to have a truly special and memorable time in Kyoto.
- Stuart (10/5): Sublime. Can’t wait to be back! - Tome and her husband went above and beyond to make sure that we were at home and had an incredible time in Kyoto. This included local recommendations, a welcome drink (getting to know more about our host), and being made to feel at home. Nothing
- Yannick (10/5): - Tout.
Sejour parfait 😀 Rien.
- Sarah (10/5): - The ryokan was incredible- very well kept and clearly well cared for. We had such a wonderful time!
- Marianna (10/5): Value for money. Worth a visit! - Traditional ryokan, very comfortable stay and sleep. The space was very relaxing, exceptionally calming. The owner was very sweet, helpful and kind. She left us a very cute note on our last day with breakfast from a local bakery! I would definitely recommend this place!!
- Sandra (10/5): I would stay again in a heartbeat when in Kyoto. - All of the above was exceptional. Tomei was so gracious and full of knowledge. She recommended several places to visit which we took advantage of. Nothing

- Neil (10/5): Excellent location and beautiful house - Charming, clean, roomy, close to all the must-see sights and the best of Kyoto. The property was how we imagine a Japanese home looks like filled with beautiful yet simple furniture, antiques and unique storage areas. Tome, our host was very friendly, welcoming and efficient. She helped us to plan the sights to see including off the beaten track locations. She made us feel very welcome. Our room with en-suite bathroom was spacious, comfortable and immaculately clean. She also provided us with adaptors for our European chargers. Staying here made our visit to Kyoto extra special and the other guests we spoke to enthusiastically agreed. N/A
- Victor (10/5): Beautiful stay with amazing hosts in a quaint Kyoto neighborhood! - The property was beautiful! Tome san and her husband Kazu son were amazing host and made you feel extremely special. They are full of energy and you can feel it the moment you step into Ryokan Mugen. Tome San, cooked an amazing traditional Japanese breakfast each morning, gave great suggestions for sightseeing based on our interest and locations to each other, and even called restaurants to help book us reservations for dinner. We highly recommend Ryokan Mugen to anyone wanting an authentic neighborhood experience in Japan that you’ll never get from a hotel! Nothing. We loved everything to do with this property!
- Vilma (10/5): - Very cozy and calm. Best stay during our trip to Japan. Never imagine such place in the middle or Kyoto. Our host Tome is just marvelous! Nothing
- Delphine (10/5): A great experience in a ryokan - Our host welcomed us very warmly in this beautiful typical house. We had a nice room overlooking a pretty interior garden. Great calm. Delicious traditional breakfast. I highly recommend a stay with Mrs. Mugen. Nothing.
