• Rachelle (7/5): Nice accomodations and customer service but wish there was an elevator for our large suitcases. - The room was nice and large, with amenities such as bottled water, chocolates, side tables, and comfortable bedding. The breakfast was nice (made to order), and the service was good. The environment was very inviting. There was no elevator, so we had to carry our bags up and down the stairs. However, there was someone there to help upon request. They ran out of towels during our stay.

The staff were not very welcoming at reception they chatted a lot to each other and barely looked up when we walked in. This was most days at reception while we were there.

• Keith (9/5): All good, would recommend - Easy booked, great location, very clean, comfy bed and fantastic breakfast. Staff helpful, late booking but still managed a late checkout no problem. Thought the cost when booked at 7pm for that night could be reduced when hotel not nearly full.

Die Herren im Service in den beiden Restaurants waren sehr freundlich und aufmerksam. Personal (vorallem Damen) dürfte freundlicher sein. Bei den meisten jungen Damen hat leider der Charme und die Freundlichkeit gefehlt. Frühstück für den Preis etwas dürftig! Essen im Restaurant (Marmalade und Dulse gut)

• Rebecca1226383838 (2/5): Horrible service - Me and my friend got violently sick a few days before our trip and called to cancel. I asked if it was possible to get a refund, to which they said yes, as long as we contact the agent we went through to book them. I did that and the agent came back with that they refused the refund. I called them again regarding this and they didn’t have time to assist me and blew me off. Had we known they would have refused us, we could have given the stay to family or friends, since it was already paid for. Very dissappointing and unprofessional. We were thinking of coming to Portree some other time, but I know for certain that we won’t be using this hotel anymore.

From the moment we arrived we had an amazing time Stayed 3 nights with my wife to celebrate her birthday, the room we had was lovely and clean with a super comfy bed and stunning views. We had breakfast each day and evening meal in the hotel twice, delicious. So well cooked and beautifully presented. A mention to the staff, every team member was so friendly and helpful, it really made a difference to our stay. Special thanks to Chloe and Rachel who were great in the restaurant, and to Abi who sorted a couple of requests in our room. Without doubt we would stay again and have already recommended this hotel to others . Thanks for making the weekend so special for us both

• Taylor (10/5): Gorgeous stay on the Isle of Skye - Room had a lovely view of the garden and the harbor in the distance. Quiet, clean, cozy, and comfortable, with a good restaurant on site for breakfast and dinner and other spa-like amenities. On site parking and a fairly central location on Skye made daytripping easy. 10 minute walk to the center of Portree for shops and restaurants.

• Karrst (10/5): Excellent hotel with old and modern mixed. - We spent four nights at the Marmalade Hotel which was hotel number six on our tour of Scotland. Location - The hotel is only a 5-minute walk away from the centre of Portree, it's on a hill above the town in a quiet suburb. It is set in mature in mature gardens, commanding views over the village of Portree, the loch and the Cuillin Mountains, and breath-taking views of the coastlines. The hotel is a mix of an historic Manor House and contemporary modern architecture. We found both tranquil and bustling at the same time. Staff - Great staff the welcome at reception was excellent and check in in went smoothly. They were always helpful with any request even arranging a laundry pick up for us. Never short of a friendly chat and some advice on where best to to avoid the rush. Restaurant staff in the morning at breakfast were friendly and very quick with our orders. Room - Our room was in the modern section of the hotel. Large spacious with views over the gardens and the Cuillin Hills. There were tea and coffee available in the room, along with water and some delicious biscuits and a Nespresso coffee machine. The bed was very comfortable and slept well. The on suite bathroom was clean and had the essentials for your stay. The room was kept clean and tidy for the whole of our stay. Thank you. Food - We had an excellent breakfast every morning set in the older Manor House with garden views. There was a good selection of fruit, juices, yoghurt and pastries if you wanted a continental style. there was also a good choice of hot breakfasts. Full Scottish was excellent as was the Eggs Benedict, Avo on Toast etc. What ever we chose was delicious. This is definitely a hotel to recommend if you are going to stay on Skye. Being in Portree it is also central for all the attractions in any direction. In addition, its secluded position meant it was away from the main busy tourist areas.

• Campbell (10/5): Gorgeous property elevated further by fabulous staff - Incredible staff, so welcoming, helpful, and hospitable. The hotel is well-styled and comfortable, and impeccably clean. A reduced dinner menu was available (local cheeses, breads, etc) which was delicious and great to enjoy by the fire. We awoke to a stunning view of the well-managed garden and the faint sound of bagpipes playing in the town centre. Bliss. Parking was easy, too.

• Elissa (5/5): An adequate, clean hotel but overpriced for what it is. - The restaurant was surprisingly good. It was clean and friendly. Our room, though large, was cold and the bathroom needed serious updating. The shower trickled water. We had to ask the staff to bring in a heater in the evening because we were freezing. Also VERY expensive, especially for what it was which was essentially a 3 star property. I realize there is a dearth of hotels in the area but it was far more expensive that our 5 star Fairmont hotel in St Andrews (and a lot less comfortable). One more thing: the staff, while nice and friendly, all seemed new and as a result, couldn’t help us that much when I asked to speak to a manager. I will say that the person at the desk in the evening did provide us with a heater which was greatly appreciated!

Special mention to the gentleman i/c the restaurant, highest standard. We didn't have the opportunity for dinner but breakfast was one of the best cooked and presented we've enjoyed for a long time. Nothing to dislike. Suggestion - Hotel signage could do with a refresh to catch the eye more.

• CasualFriday (10/5): Perfect room, lovely staff - Comfortable, clean, modern hotel. Our room was spacious, with a great bed and a great view. Breakfast was ample and well prepared. The staff was lovely; “accommodating” does not begin to describe the level of service they gave to two not-young travelers who had a few special needs. Great location in Portree and easy private parking. We can’t recommend this hotel highly enough.
• Elissa (6/5): Very expensive hotel which tries hard to please. Doesn’t always succeed. - Nice clean rooms. Staff very friendly and efficient. Room size was good. The restaurant was excellent. Food was good and plentiful. Price was way over-priced for what it was. We were paying five star price for,at most, a four star hotel. Our second day (we had to switch rooms because our first room wasn’t available for two nights) we were at a family room. It was very large but it was chilly and we couldn’t adjust the temperature. So we were given two radiators. That helped quite a bit. But the shower the next morning was truly awful. It sputtered out water. (The bath the night before was excellent though.) Overall the bathrooms in both rooms needed a major overhaul as the toilets don’t work well either. Plumbing definitely needs an upgrade! The staff seemed very inexperienced. Most everyone we encountered were new and couldn’t really help us, even though they tried.

Staff dressed in suits/formal attire, but that does not a luxury hotel make. Feel really ripped off, avoid this overpriced hotel. Location was good, so at least that is something.

• Nick-Miami-FL (6/5): Not Worth The Expense. - Multiple Issues with this hotel. Rooms have paper thin walls - thought there was a bowling alley upstairs. Could hear family in the next room talking to their baby. Outside shabby - flower pots filled with empty beer cans, water bottles and cigarette ends. Pretty surly staff at check-in. Not overly helpful, nor would have eye contact with guests. At time of booking, was not informed restaurant was closed on a Monday. A little misleading on their website, as the restaurant is a selling point. Final thought: There have to be better places to stay in Portree in/around the same price bracket providing way better value for money and service. The hotel certainly doesn't provide a 4 star room or service. Saving grace: Hotel breakfast staff. The young girl from Newcastle was so pleasant and helpful.

Breakfast had a good selection choices to order. I got the avocado toast with eggs on it, yummy! Close to the town to walk for dinner.

The quality of food and restaurant service good. The room bore little resemblance to the photo. Tiny window, worn paintwork and headboard. Only a trickle of warm water from the shower and bedroom next to some kind of noisy generator (I wore head phones). And very expensive for the room quality.

Bagno pulito e ottima doccia. Buona la posizione vicina al centro. Prezzo alto per i servizi offerti, per esempio mancano ciabattine e frigo bar, che è legittimo aspettarsi in un hotel 4 stelle. Colazione deludente, nessun buffet e spazi ridotti. Abbiamo espressamente chiesto in anticipo di avere una colazione senza lattosio, ma ci sono state proposte e servite solo opzioni CON lattosio e quindi immangiabili per una persona intollerante. Dopo la nostra ulteriore richiesta di prodotti senza lattosio al personale di sala, non abbiamo comunque ottenuto nulla con la scusa che l’informazione non era stata passata. Visto il prezzo pagato per una notte e una colazione, ci aspettavamo di avere un servizio più completo e decisamente migliore.

• TripleDutch (2/5): Not worth the price due to poor service - Hotel Marmalade is about a 5 minute uphill walk from the lovely center of Portree and has sufficient free parking space. Unfortunately, our overall experience was very disappointing. While the room was modern, ours looked only onto adjacent buildings instead of the beautiful valley views some other guests had. From the start, service was poor: when we arrived before check-in time, the receptionist was unfriendly, refused to check if our room was ready and seemed more interested in chatting with colleagues. At this price point, we expected far better. There is also no elevator, which makes carrying luggage upstairs inconvenient. Breakfast was unacceptable. On the first day, staff arrived late and rushed to prepare things. On the second day, no staff showed up at all – we had to go to Tesco to buy croissants. Housekeeping was also unreliable: after returning from our hikes, our room had not been cleaned, and we had to chase staff to fix it. Although we did receive some compensation, the lack of professionalism and basic hospitality really impacted our stay. For the premium price charged, the service fell far below expectation. It is time for the management of this hotel to get their act together.

• Spectacle64 (6/5): Did not meet expectations at price charged - Portree is the ideal base from which to explore Skye. We chose the Marmalade as looked like good rooms and there was car parking - an issue in the town. Initially we liked the idea of eating in the restaurant but reviews were so mixed we decided again and had a couple of great evening meals in town - big shout out to Cuchullin and Sea Breezes! Our room on top floor was spacious and had views over trees with sea in background. But there were lots of oddities that made us seriously question the star rating and value for money. On arrival it was a bit strange to be shown to our room up two flights of stairs only to have to follow the receptionist back down to collect our cases and then immediately ascend again. Lots of chipped paintwork all the way up the stairs so no recent redecoration. But, worst of all, was that the hotel did not expect to service the room during our 3 night stay. We came back after our first full day hiking and exploring to find bed unmade, bins unemptied and towels damp/unchanged. We asked for this to be done the next day, which it was, but only at the most superficial level with a bit of debris from a previous guest still there on the carpet showing that vacuuming rooms is not a regular thing, despite all the chips on the stair paintwork! Although the hotel apologised and claimed the room servicing issue was an oversight, looking at other reviews, we are not alone with that problem. Breakfast was a bit strange as well. You get brought a tiered cake stand with various things on it but all jumbled - sometimes one yoghurt even though there were two of us. Always two croissant. And sliced fruit. But what are you meant to do with laughing cow and baybelle cheese? Toast was not offered - you had to ask and on one morning they had run out of bread. Juices not fresh either. Then there was a young waitress, who obviously had not been trained, who would walk up to each table whilst everyone was half way through eating and say "Room number?" (no please) and then write that on her hand before disappearing without further comment. So surprised by all this when paying the amount per night that we were. Disappointing.

• ProNomad33062 (4/5): Five-Star Prices, Three-Star Service and Amenities - This hotel is way over-priced for what it is. And they seem to have bad staffing problems. On arrival we found nobody at the front desk and had to wait for 10 minutes for someone to show up. The hotel restaurant is closed on the same two nights when most other restaurants in town are closed, leaving their clients high and dry. And on our third night they wouldn’t make room for us either. Thankfully we instead discovered the restaurant at the beautiful Cuillin Hills Hotel. That hotel, its restaurant, the service, and the views were wonderful, and we badly wished we were staying there instead.
• Sparkle3317 (10/5): Great choice in Skye - We loved the quaint feel and pretty decor of this hotel. Our room was clean and welcoming with a beautiful view! The breakfast was delicious and the staff so kind. There was always someone at the desk to help us with travel ideas and answer questions. The hotel is a quick and easy walk into Portree. We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this hotel to visitors to the Isle of Skye!
• berndkQ3062XC (10/5): - I didn’t sleep at the hotel but I went to the restaurant, the scenery wasn’t amazing but don’t let the looks fool you! The food was fast and tasted amazing! We had the 250g fillet and ribeye with French fries, red wine sauce and pepper sauce. It was delicious! The steak was flavourful and juicy. And the fries were perfectly crispy, the staff were amazing and the manager was the best! We also had the soup of the day which was carrot and cumin, it was so good I got it a 2nd time! Would come again.
• Nodrogthegreat (6/5): Marmalade without toast - The Hotel is very nice the room was clean and bed comfortable. The restaurant was a bit of a let down. The bar does not do cocktails, which in this level of hotel is unacceptable. The evening meal was a bit of a let down again for this standard of hotel. Breakfast was another disappointment. Very limited fruit juices or should I say fruit juice. There were no breakfast cereals on offer. We had the so called full Scottish breakfast, see photo, I did pass on the mushrooms. There was a venison sausage and haggis but no pork or beef sausages or black pudding on offer and the one and only potato scone was baked rather than fried which makes them rather dry. A full Scottish breakfast should include pork or beef sausages black pudding Haggis tattie scones egg tomatoes mushrooms beans or at least the choice of these along with toast and Jams and arrange of cereals and fruit juices. The owner or manager needs to consider the customers and not their particular likes and dislikes. It is obvious that these hotel have a captive customer base, unfortunately the visitors are not getting the best of Scottish hospitality
• andyww18 (6/5): Very good rooms but … lots to do on food and service for a 4* hotel at these prices - First the positives . The location has some lovely views from upper rooms and is quiet but just 5 minutes walk above Portree town centre . The beds and pillows are very comfortable with good bathroom with a standalone power shower . Great blackout curtains are useful in the long days of a Scottish summer. The hotel design works well in the spacious rooms . The modern wiring has plenty of cable friendly sockets However .. the breakfast leaves a lot to be improved . Service was very patchy most days of our 5 day visit , slow or not attentive enough to get the order right first time . The food itself is unimaginative , with no buffet and fairly limited choice . Avocado on toast was just mashed avocado .. no seasoning , feta , chilli… or anything one might expect from a modern pricey boutique hotel . No granola , limited yoghurts or fruits , limited bread choice , plastic babybel cheese. We didn’t try dinner as it needs booking months ahead with not even a couple of tables held back for guests . Based on breakfast it would have been an expensive mistake on an island with outstanding food choices . Neither is there room service . A fridge would have been useful Our room was not refreshed one day so we had to ask for teabags . The smart TV is not set up to be smart , surely again a miss in a contemporary hotel Overall this suggests staffing problems , the few staff were very nice and helpful but perhaps under-trained or over stretched Skye hotels are hard to book and this location works well as a base with lots of accessible walk out restaurants.. but I would struggle to book again at these prices ( nearly £400 a night in July ) unless this hotel raises its game … if they want to

• Deanna (4/5): - The hotel was very pretty and the people working in the dining room were lovely and somebody who was new at reception I believe her name was Mina was very kind and compassionate, but we had the worst most disrespectful experience and it colored our stay by someone named Kerry. This person should never work with customers. Apparently she has her own bed-and-breakfast on the side, but I can’t imagine she was absolutely shaming And inappropriate involving other customers in a disagreement in front of my young child. It was honestly the most upsetting hotel experience I have ever had because of this woman who was rude, disrespectful, and quite frankly seemed like she did not like people.

All the breakfast and dinner meals in their restaurant were very good. Mark, our server, was very attentive and friendly which made for a nice dining experience. The front desk staff were also great. Would stay there again.

• Ryan (3/5): Very poor, over priced - Location Massively overpriced, music blaring in kitchen below room 7 from 6.30am. Friends had ordered surprise bottle and gifts for our arrival and they forgot. Delivered it at 9.30pm when we had already had to go to town for a drink.
• The4Gs2014 (10/5): Perfect Hotel with Excellent Restaurant - We stayed at the Marmalade for three nights and thought it was perfect. The staff greeted us warmly and were very nice to interact with. Our room was modern, peaceful, quiet, very clean, and had all of the amenities (nice bath products, sparkling bottled water, delicious treats). We had dinner in the hotel restaurant on the night of our arrival after a long day of travel and really enjoyed having such a nice experience right on-site. Breakfast is very generous and features both cold items and a hot item of your choice, plus coffee. The restaurant staff were also very nice to work with -- nothing was too much trouble. We liked that the hotel is a short walk into Portree but that it was absolutely silent at nigh, which let us sleep very well after all of our outdoor adverntures. We would definitely stay here again!

• Rawat (1/5): Smelly room - impossible to stay - The location was good however the room was smelly and unbearable. We had to move to another hotel at 10:30 PM in the night. The room was so smelly we couldn't stay there for the night. After spending 3 hours in the lobby area waiting for the staff to handle the situation, it didn't work out and then we were shifted to another hotel at 10:30 PM. It was really disappointing to get such facilities after booking one of the premium hotels in Portree. The delay meant we couldn't spend our time in Portree as planned and had to cut down on some attractions in Isle of Skye the next day due to the fatigue caused by the transfer late at night. Even after all this, the hotel has not yet provided any compensation for the issues even though we were promised it will be sorted by next morning (18 June). One of the worst experiences of my life and would definitely not suggest this hotel to anyone.

Good feel about it The shower has no pressure and was difficult in get in and out of. Curtains looked lovely but weren’t practical at keeping light out. Service was poor, didn’t feel like there was a lack of staff but rather a lack of training and organisation. Waiting 45 mins for breakfast was too long

High Points: Sebastian at the bar Low Points: Staff: all staff is growing or having first day (restaurant at night and the male in the morning); Kerry at checkin "processed" me as per her duty, gave a tour to my room, and then passed me off to Sebastian for further inquiries, though he was swamped with training staff and restaurant diners Room: changed to an "accessibility room" on the main road highway with a main door opening OUT to the main road and no proper shower and never informed that I was NOT getting the room I booked for over 450 DOLLARS; how would the managers of this place feel flying from NYC to UK then to small planes and then five hour bus and then getting doused in rain and LIVING for a long hot shower in a great rated hotel to find the bathroom in these pictures; ANYBODY would be disappointed when having booked a different category room; nobody came through with assistance at this hotel for travel; no refrigerator or magnifying mirror and tacky signs telling guests not to take home the shampoo; no robes or slippers; my room #11 was ON the highway (see photo) and had noisy guests on the poorly padded flooring above me making for quite a noisy night; the website boasts a huge tv but mine is minuscule (see photo); neither the "high pressure rain shower" that I booked and anticipated for the price, nor the "bose speakers" came in my room. This is FALSE ADVERTISING. Arrival & Ground and Company Pride & Cleanliness: after walking or driving to the hotel, the one is welcomed with the dirty floor parking and trash bins next to the Marmalade signs: how horrible is this (see the photos); the hotel has NO view in ANY direction from its location, despite being on top of a hill Concierge or Assistance: neither GETTING TO OR LEAVING FROM this property; although Sebastian tried his iPhone told him the same that mine could tell me; New Staff: why in the middle of June should be hotel have so many new hires for a hotel rated thus? Why can't it can't keep its staff? The girls at the breakfast area with long hair need to park their negative attitudes at the door before entering work and prepare to SERVE both nice and difficult individuals; rolling their eyes when they walk away from tables is something we can all SEE, and this brings down the breakfast room that's already disappointed from the "tower" of cold, dry, old croissants everyone gets without ordering; Unique Points: guests are invited to sit in a common room "lobby" area between reception and restaurant; the toilet paper roll was PRESSED with a logo and this was the first time I saw this in my 60 years of travel. BRAVO! F&B Big Threes: Food: I paid for the mac & cheese even though I said it clearly had been made days prior and reheated in its own grease; pepercorn sauce was exquisite; need to bring back the puree potato in lieu of these mac and cheese till you perfect both; broccoli was lovely Service: trainee both at dinner and at breakfast; this isn't fair to Sebastian to open and close the bar and run tables and oversee a new staff that's more afraid that helpful to him. Ambience: no music or feeling of "you're at home in good hands and we got you" Breakfast: please tell the male whose day was TODAY his first day 14JUN24 that "relax and treat everyone as a friend and eventually everyone will get what he and she and they need; no need to be frantic or scared or nervous at all." He was so nervous running like a chicken that nothing got done, and the girls certainly did nothing to help bring him along. Summary: It was sad and uncomfortable to watch the restaurant dinner and breakfast during the middle of June for an episode of training and unraveling where there comes included breakfast and you do have good accolades and reviews. However, this did cost me 450US dollars for no useable shower after all and no good night sleep. Housekeeping will tell you that I never even attempted that shower. Changing rooms to guests is unacceptable in the hospitality industry without some conversation and compensation or commiseration.

• doriskN8374CU (10/5): Stay in Isle of Skye - Helpful staff, spacious room with nice outlook. Best breakfast ever - porridge with drambuie and berry compote.. Portree is good central area to tour Isle of Skye. Didn’t particularly enjoy the dinner I had there but my husband enjoyed his.
