Guest Reviews
- Sonia (1/5): Disgusting - Absolutely shocking room filthy shower falling off wall. Once I made a complaint to see the manager no show. Then to follow by such an unprofessional email from the manager. Swan you charge to much you would have to pay me to stay again!! Not to mention the empty dug bag under the cup
- GERARD (1/5): Not good. - This time ...not much Mouse activity in the vents in my room all night. Mouse droppings in the toilet the next day. No one on duty to go to to request a change of room. I have booked the two people into The Swan on several occasions recently but I will not do so again.
- Glynis (3/5): Don’t expect 5 star…,. Basic! - The staff were lovely. The pub itself and the brasserie were pleasant. Lovely views. Clean linen and towels supplied . Sadly the outside is run down and requires maintenance. The accommodation hallway carpet needs replacing. The room was grubby. The bathroom wastes needed a good deep clean. The bedding ( duvet and pillows ) is past its best and needs replacing. It was nice to supply some wine and bottled water ( on the house )in the room fridge some glasses would have been helpful. We stayed four nights never had any basic house keeping like washed cups or new toilet rolls never appeared. The manager promised to come and reset the room safe. It never worked so not sure if he tried. The balcony needs repainting and the supplied furniture is shabby and needs repainting or replacing.
Why did we stay? The basics were fine it wasn’t hugely expensive. The staff were friendly but the place clearly needs investment and some good hospitality training. It’s perfectly placed to explore the area and it have us s as good laugh.
- Kelly (10/5): Beautiful place and the view especially at sunrise is stunning - Everything about the room was lovely Liked everything only thing I would say is that we got room service food was lovely but everything came in the small individual metal bowl things (curry) maybe a plate would be good to dish it onto
- Jacqueline (3/5): Very disappointing. - The rooms need a lot of attention.not clean, not maintained at all. Funny little pub.the restaurant had obviously been refurbished.we were the only two people in there at 8 o’clock on a Friday night.what does that tell you! Not clean. Terrible menu in the restaurant.no tea bags in the room. Had to ask for some.the to discover there was no milk.you don’t stay in a hotel to have to keep going to reception to ask for basic things that should be in your room.no one there to check you out or return the room key to.if there had of been I would of asked for some money back.come on, if you can’t get the basics right you might as well give it up.

- Marie (7/5): - Location plus the staff - the young girl Laila checked us in , served us at the bar, served dinner - she was very pleasant and hard working and an absolute credit to the place Constant smell of weed in and outside the annex, very poor communication prior to my stay and no response to any emails/voicemails
- Greg (2/5): -
- Ben (6/5): Good location but needs work. - Comfy bed, polite helpful check in. Unfortunately the hallway smelt of something people smoke. Check out was difficult as the pub was closed wasn't told where to leave the key, & the carpets were very dirty.
- Adam (5/5): - Can't argue with price. Place looks bit run down.
- Woodd (8/5): -
- Clare (6/5): Strange - The river ran along side the pub/rooms.
Staff lovely. It was a bit smelly and scruffy as you go to the rooms with smelling drain covers and bins by the entrance.
The bed is a double size so much smaller than we are used to. The room smelt very strongly of “febreeze”.
There were half used shower gel and shampoo in the shower left from previous occupant.
- Cerrie (3/5): -
- Michael Johnson (3/5): A disappointing visit. We would not recommend The Swan as a place to stay. - The lady behind the bar was friendly but she seemed to be the only member of staff on duty. The room was very dated and not very clean. The shower leaked all the time. There was a long wait for the evening meal and a limited menu. There was no breakfast.
- Katy (2/5): Not a pleasant stay- needs a good clean. - The location on the river has the potential to be very nice, and the staff were very friendly and chatty. The room was in a barn at the rear of the pub. Outside were three bins full of linen and a linen bag full of linen which remained there for the duration of our stay. The carpet was dirty and the bathroom was really dirty. Urine stains on the toilet. Hairs and dust on the toilet. Grime around the base of the tiles. And toothpaste stains on the tap and mirrors. There were brown marks on the towels. The room was very dusty and the walls were paper thin. We could hear our neighbours very loudly. The pub was full of locals and dogs and had a nice atmosphere, but the restaurant had barely any of the items on the menu and it was very average. They don't serve breakfast at all. We left the bar at 9:20 and the owner locked the door behind us. Nice to be made to feel welcome. Advertised closing time was 10pm! We only paid about £55 to stay, so didn't raise the issues at the time, because it was quite clear that when we were locked out as we left, that they wouldn't be available for us to raise issues. We got up at 8 and left. Definitely won't be coming back. We tried to be positive as it had clearly been a nice place to stay at one time, but things need seriously improving here.
- jennie (10/5): -
- Claire (6/5): Nothing like the description - It was fairly quiet and the bedding and towels were clean. Staff were helpful, but apart from that the description of this hotel does not match the reality. The room was dirty, the block with the rooms and the pub needs upgrading. Unpainted windows, dirty carpets and mirrors. Food in the pub was average. No idea where the 5 stars came from or the facilities mentioned in the description. No radiators, but they had installed an electric heater.
- Graham (7/5): -
- jennie (10/5): -
- Danny (5/5): -
- Loraine (9/5): - River view
- Bywater (10/5): - Friendly staff, location, comfortable beds, warm, modern bathroom. Good food. Location on the river. Decking needs lick of paint but that is being over critical as its the only thing that let's it down slightly.
- Martin (5/5): Short break - Nice location by the river, the staff were very helpful. Could do with so TLC
- Mullane (7/5): Great place & location but some small issues - Location
Friendly staff
Evening Meal was good
Realy nice room & also very clean No breakfast
No central heating so bathroom was cold even though bedroom was quite warm has electric heater supplied
No spare toilet roll ( we ran out ) had to use tissues that we had with us
Didn't no how to check out, has place was locked up & no one available, se we called back later in day to give keycard back
- Lynden (6/5): - The staff were delightful, Very reasonable bar meal. The accommodation seemed a little rundown. No breakfast. Sort of expected it to be a lot closer to Ely.
- smart (9/5): Altogether a very pleasant and relaxing and convenient stay. Shall be staying again. - Having a balcony was lovely, and the room was a generous size. The shower absolutely excellent. The staff very friendly and so helpful. Easy walk into town, great Indian Restaurant The Jamadi. Friendly pub. Ideal to catch the train to Ely which takes only 10 minutes for a visit to the Cathedral.
Didn't have chance to eat at the Swan but all looked very good what we saw.
Very reasonably priced.
- Tony (8/5): Peaceful and pleasant - The scenery and the staff were amazing for the price we could not of asked for more plus the steak was amazing. We have booked to stay again the 13-15th march for work would not go anywhere else. It was cold in the restaurant as the heating system had failed but they did there best to find an alternative solution in the mean time but the room was lovely and warm so not a huge issue.
- Martin (1/5): Very sub standard and lack of care and service levels - The location Generally the room was tired and unclean, stained bed linen, broken toilet seat, worn fittings, the bed hadn’t been stripped and remade and the sheets look like they’re were the sheets from the previous occupants,if you’re going to provide accommodation at least try to make the best of what could be an amazing stay, very poor and my initial room stank of cannabis
- Brian (4/5): Tired and dated place, could do with some TLC. - Staff friendly and helpful, easy to find. Place was very quiet and looking a bit tired and run-down. Lots of potential and some nice touches like wine in fridge on arrival. Food overpriced and not to a good standard.
- KOSTAKIS (9/5): - Warmth and friendliness of staff Indian food
- Latashia (5/5): Wouldn’t stay again - Nicely situated by the river Very run down, the bathrooms especially. It also smelt . No options for breakfast . Would be nice to offer continental as it’s not a cheap stay . Very remote so can’t just pop out .
- David (8/5): Exactly as we requested. We would stay again. - The amazing two young ladies who worked in the bar, they were polite, extremely hard working, and friendly. One young lady's name is Tenisha, unfortunately i didn't get the name of the other young lady, but they are both an incredible asset
to the owners of this pub/hotel. No lighting in the wardrobe area, it was quite dark to see into the cupboards and the safe.
- Sarah (3/5): Convenient location but won’t stay again I’m afraid - It was a good location for us visiting family The heating wasn’t working, the rooms are very tired, cold and the bathroom is very basic and not particularly clean.
- Wendy (2/5): Wouldn’t stay again - Their was no breakfast the food the night before was very poor The food the night before was overpriced
- Stephen (7/5): - Upgraded facility with nice views of the canal.
Neat and clean. The room had a slight musty smell
- Sarah (7/5): The room could have done with a refresh, but the location & staff were wonderful. - The room was spacious, and the view from the balcony was stunning. The bathroom was very dark as one of the lights wasn’t working, and the tap was also very loose and not fitted to the sink very well.
The carpet was heavily stained in places and it appears that not everything advertised was available in all rooms.
- Oeds (8/5): - De rust Kapstok
- Darren (8/5): Really enjoyed our stay in a great location with a great atmosphere and great food - No breakfast available The king size bed was two single beds pushed together and the mattress on one of them
Had a massive dip in the middle
- catherine (7/5): - Anna was lovely! Mattresses very old/poor
- Mike (8/5): A great little find convenient to Ely and with some great walks - The heating system seemed to be a bit odd. We were never cold despite the freezing weather outside but sometimes we were just too hot. Otherwise everything was great.
- Fiona (7/5): - The room was clean and comfortable.
- David (7/5): overall lovely spot on the river - the breakfast was good and delivered to our room as it was boxing day. the staff were lovely, our room was cold ,they should have put the heater on a few hours before we arrived.
- Liviu (8/5): Great place - Location, room size , room view etc N/A
- Clive (8/5): Great service and friendly staff - Great food and great welcime Nothing
- Ken (7/5): It was winter and Brasserie restaurant was closed due to low number, so ate in the bar. - It would be a fantastic place in the summer, rooms back onto the river, a lovely wooden decking area making it a great place for a summer beer. The property was fine. Had a meal there, there was a Sri Lankan menu which was outstanding but portions were very small
- adrian (4/5): Disappointing to say the least. - The location was good. Given that Booking.com gave it 5 stars it was hard to see how this could have been achieved,
Arrived within window - hotel wanted payment immediately
Restaurant closed first night / chef sent home ill second night - no food.
Curtailed stay and left on third day - sums it up
- David (6/5): The Swan is an unpretentious pub with rooms over looking the river . - We needed somewhere to stay in Littleport and The Swan would fit the bill, as it is on the edge of the village and can easy walk to the centre. Our room , in a separate block had no operational heating in the bathroom but was spacious and comfortable enough. Breakfast was not included but offered at a price on arrival.
- Bettina (8/5): Enjoyable Stay - The location is beautiful. Unfortunately the weather being bad we didn't make use of it all. The bedroom was nice worth comfortable bed. The shower was amazing, just a shame the heating wasn't working. The food is amazing! The only thing I would say is that it's a shame breakfast isn't served in the pub. They provide food and I seppuku have liked the option to have breakfast, but not in the bedroom.
- Brett (10/5): - Everything Nothing
- Alexandra (2/5): If it was £30 for the night it would not have been a bargain , but for nearly £100 it was bad. - The Staff were really helpful and polite. The location was good, with a good view of the river. The property was in quite a poor state, (broken Signage and just rundown) The Accommodation block was unheated (although there were new looking radiators on the walls. The same for the rooms, there was radiators on the walls just not working. They gave us a cheap convection heater for the rooms which took an age to warm the room, and did nothing for the unheated bathroom. The carpets on the floor were worn and badly stained in areas. We paid for Breakfast, which they said had to be served in the rooms! But there wasn’t a space to eat this comfortably, and meant the sole staff member on site had to cook it (a full English) and then bring the plates to us across the car park (All outside and to our rooms) The night we stayed the heater blew the electrics for the wall sockets, so there went the only heat and any table lights and TV.
- Ella (5/5): Overpriced for what it was. - The swan folded towel was a nice touch. Staff member was friendly and helpful. Bed was comfy. Dressing gowns in the wardrobe. Room was cold when we arrived, although it heated up fairly quickly with the electric heater. Bathroom floor remained freezing though. Some areas of peeling paint both inside and out, and the TV remote seemed to be missing. The room wasn't in the nice pub pictured online, but in a cabin round the back of the car park. Honestly it was a travelodge experience without the lower price.
- Caroline (6/5): Great riverside views - A lovely riverside location on the Fens with a cute little verandah with table and chairs overlooking the river. Room was comfy with everything you could need for an overnight stay. Sadly it's a bit run down and in loved. The images do not reflect how it looks now. The breakfast had to be ordered the night before and could only be eaten in the room. The bar was very very quiet. Such a shame for a lovely local pub.

- richard (8/5): - Location is great with a lovely outdoor patio overlooking the river. Staff were very welcoming. It would have been good to have the option of a breakfast on Sunday as the local cafes didn't open until 10am at the earliest.
- Susan (9/5): Restful , relaxing night. - The setting was beautiful. Restaurant on site for dinner. Walking past the wheely bins to get to the room.
- Shaun (9/5): -
- kristy (5/5): The restaurant and the food was nice and the rooms were clean and comfortable but the pub itself is run down and dated a - The rooms were nice and the bed was comfortable. Shower was lovely and a nice view to look out onto the river. The staff were friendly. The food in the restaurant was lovely. The pub was so rundown and looks nothing like the photos on booking.com. It’s old and dated and needs a compete refurbish. There is nothing around to walk too, the village itself is so rundown. Apart from the river to walk along.
- Kezpatch (10/5): - It was easy to find and the staff were helpful Nothing
- Nicola (10/5): - Me and my fiance stayed for a few nights and was absolutely beautiful xx
- Andy (10/5): -
- Eduin (7/5): - Nice hotel. All ok apart the bad communication and constant delays to send me a vat receipt.
- Olive (8/5): - Good size room with lovely view over the river. We had dinner served in the room with was helpful. The staff were very nice. The room had not been full serviced before our arrival as there were two empty teabag packets in the stand. We had the room serviced the next day in order to have that replenished. The carpet has a lot of stains and desperately requires shampooing. Could also benefit from a new mattress. Overall we enjoyed our stay in a lovely location , and admitted it was a fairly late booking, we probably found what we paid quite high for two nights at this time of year.b
- Eduin (1/5): I need my invoice - I hope after this bad review you send the vat invoice for my stay. I requested at least 5 times and nobody get back to me. I hope after this bad review you send the vat invoice for my stay. I requested at least 5 times and nobody get back to me.
- Sharon (7/5): -
- Tom (5/5): -
- Paul (8/5): did what we needed - didnt have any
- Ye (10/5): -
- Alison (10/5): Nice overnight stay - Great comfy room Nothing
- Annette (5/5): - No breakfast was on offer but we already knew that. Location good , nice outlook from our room onto the River Ouse. The carpet was filthy full of steins and needed removing .
- Iain (8/5): - Comfy room with easy access, good parking, and nice with the river outside. The pub was OK, not great. No breakfast option.
- Craig (9/5): -
- Alan (10/5): -
- Michael (7/5): Lovely Riverside property, with our own balcony overlooking the river. Bedroom etc could be improved - There was no breakfast which was disappointing. The view of the river was great. The bed was too soft and the duvet too heavy for the time of year. The bathroom was cold and uni nviting, too cold to use the shower. The room was clean as was the linen and towels. We ate in the restaurant on the first evening, the food was quite good, the music was better and provided a good atmosphere. The soft mattress on the bed and the heavy weight duvet. The unseated bathroom.
- Angela (8/5): Ideal location for night out in Ely - Lovely outlook across the river
- Maria (9/5): Clean, comfortable, friendly staff. - Stayed a few years ago. Not often you return to a place and find you still think it decent. Last time I stayed there was breakfast but not this time. Lack of breakfast only thing I didn’t like. Everything else was okay. I would probably stay again if I was in the area.
- Caroline (7/5): -
- Lee (9/5): - Great location, rooms look over the river.
Good selection of beers, food was lovely (go for one of the curries).
- Barry (9/5): -
- Mark (2/5): - Room had considerable stains, sticky areas, cobwebs and did not feel clean.
- Hayley (6/5): -
- Danielle (6/5): - View was beautiful.
Bed was comfy.
Nice bottled water and wine in fridge on arrival.
Tea and coffee facilities were good. Quite dated, needs painting and the outside furniture was really rusty.
No air-con in the rooms.
Took a while to check in because my booking was wrong. Took a while for staff to see us and check us in. Staff were very polite and helpful though.
- Amelia (7/5): - Small and on the river Misleading from the advertising online. Bathroom/shower area really needs some attention. Appears moldy
- Paul (8/5): - The room was lovely and looked onto the river with a balcony
The bathroom was tight a big shower though the door hung off a bit
- susan (3/5): - Beautiful location overlooking the River I was disappointed to see the mattress had a big brown stain on it. Also, there wasn't a mattress protector or pillow protectors!
Carpet was stained and dirty
Such a shame the location is beautiful the staff were really friendly and helpful.
Hotel needs a lot of work 😩
- Chloe (5/5): - Convenient location Dirty carpet, bugs in the room, funny smell coming from the bathroom into the whole bedroom.
- Teresa (8/5): Great view, lovely pub & room - The room was lovely and more than we expected. It was very nice to find two very large dressing gowns and 2 small bottles of wine in the fridge for us both to enjoy. The bed was comfortable and it was a lovely view looking out across the river. The balconies could do with a bit of redecoration but this didn’t affect our stay.
We ate in the pub and the homemade pie was one of the best pies that I have had out, could not fault the food or the young lady that served us.
Very glad we stayed here as a stop over on our way to Norfolk. The shower could do with a bit of new mastic to freshen it up but otherwise for the value, nothing.
- Adrian (8/5): - Evening meal was good wholesome food and very enjoyable. There was no breakfast service available which was disappointing.
- mitsy (6/5): - The bed was comfortable. Strong smell in the room like a blocked drain smell.
- Roy (9/5): Fine - I thought I had booked bed and breakfast. On arrival we were told there was no breakfast. No breakfast.
- Duncan (7/5): -
- Ian (10/5): - The service and staff were excellent as was the food. Rooms were comfortable and a lovely view across the river. A breakfast option would be better.
- Ann (8/5): - It was beautiful waking up and seeing the boats on the river, very quiet and lovely staff.
- Miriam (7/5): Friendly staff in a lovely setting - The location was lovely - a good aspect. In addition the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The bed was too soft for us but I realise this is very much down to personal preference.
