- Brian (10/5): Loved every aspect of it. I will stay again! - My visit was in March 2026 with a family of four. The Villa was fantastic and positively beyond expectations. To clarify, the Machiya Villa Sanjo Shirakawa Koji consists of four separate rentals. I was in the Tori rental which has two floors with the first floor having a dinning area, small kitchen, clothes washing/dryer, a full bathroom (shower, Onsen, toilet), and a half bath (toilet only), and a small living room (Japanese style with TV). The upper floor had a half bath (toilet / sink) and two bedrooms. The overall space was just perfect; the bedrooms were spacious and the beds (both Japanese Tatami and Western) were very comfortable and clean. The other rentals were occupied and yet very little noise was heard (think noise through shared walls or outdoors). The entire villa was clean and beautiful. The exterior neighbourhood was absolutely pleasant and very clean. The locals in the area take great care to keep the streets and curbs clean. Plus there is a little shrine outside of the Villa! The location: This villa is tucked into a local neighbourhood; so away from tourists. More importantly, you are in the Gion district. This is a very well known and high end area of Kyoto. There are restaurants that are close by in walking distance (Shuiro Eat and Craft). The Shirakawa river is a block down that also has shops. Further down is Route 143 that will take you to the GionMachi Temple and the highly popular (and very crowded) Matsubara-dori. Additionally, you are 15-20 minute walk from the train station. Experiences: I highly recommend the Private Gion walking Tour with Ken-ji. It is a private tour (just your party/group) and definitely explore Gion and Matsubara-dori (before it gets packed with tourist)!

Keyless entry using a code lock, which is great for multiple people sharing the apartment. Excellent roomy shower and bath with bath tub Amenities, coffee , tea and water in the apartment. Western and Japanese style rooms and tables Very quiet residential neighborhood, so also be quiet yourselves. Location in Higashiyama is Great. If you want to travel around the city a lot, you will need to use city bus or subway to connect. A stop closer to the river to be near Keihan and subway would have been better suited in this case.

Very smooth check in process, the personnel are well prepared and the instructions were clear. Bathtub was great, with views to a small garden. Beds are really hard. This has been partially mitigated with mattress tops, but it does not solve the issue. I would recommend to replace them asap for softer options. Windows are not sound proof, anyone passing by and talking early in the morning would wake us up.

- Aiestel Mara (10/5): Charming villa in the heart of Kyoto. - This villa was a pleasant surprise for our group of four, especially in Japan. It offered plenty of space and bathrooms for all of us, with the flexibility of half Western-style rooms and half Japanese-style rooms. Fully equipped with everything we needed (and more), including a washer/dryer which was a huge help for laundry, it was located in a quiet neighborhood yet still close to the main attractions in Kyoto. The staff was so helpful and easy to contact for any inquiries. Nothing - was perfect.

Only partial handrail on steps was dangerous. Would probably suit young family better than 2 couples.

The stairs to the bedrooms were very steep and narrow which may cause problems for some. Also, you can easily hear the neighbors talking through the walls which wasn’t too bad as they stopped not too late.

Photos are accurate. The property seems to be recently renovated but is already starting to show some wear. It has train stations close by but we often chose to walk 15-20 minutes to reach places like Nishiki Markets which was a great way to see more of Kyoto. - Andy (10/5): Perfect Kyoto Home for a week-long stay - So glad I chose this place. Everything was perfect from the friendly welcome at the central check in office to the home itself. It’s a perfect traditional Japanese home, and has absolutely everything you need for a longer stay. Small kitchen, great washer/drier (very useful on a 3 week trip to Japan). Cosy rooms and a stunning bathroom. The staff even went out of their way to help us send over something we left behind in the previous hotel. Location was perfect. Central to many of the main sites in east Kyoto and a short walk to train stations to get around to other places. We found several excellent local restaurants as well. Absolutely perfect, can’t imagine staying anywhere else in Kyoto Absolutely nothing

Perhaps the guests staying in the neighbouring apartments are not as careful as yourself and they can make a lot of noise at early hours. But other than that I would say it was perfect.

- Abegail (5/5): Good location walking distance to sights and food. But facilities in the house was only fair. - Location was good. Easy to walk around to see the sights and get the food. The washer dryer was not good. Our clothes after washing for even a whole day did not dry we had to use an external laundry mart to get our clothes washed and dried. It was very inconvenient.

- Daniella (10/5): Comfortable stay in beautiful Kyoto - It’s in a very quiet location, with convenience stores near by. Plenty of room for a family and great amenities like stove top, washing machine and kettle. To be honest the bathroom was my favourite part. The bath was just incredibly comfortable so go buy some bath salts before you arrive! To exit the front door you first have to press a safety button near the kitchen then run to the front door to make sure it doesn’t lock again. It’s not a huge drama, just annoying.

- Cconiie (10/5): Perfect villa, HANA!!!! - The location is awesome!!!!!!! It perfect for either night walks or jogging in the morning. Convenience shops are everywhere. Rooms are neat, appliances are well equipped. I'll definitely stay here too by my next visit.

- H (10/5): A dream house and unforgettable experience - This is an old style Kyoto house, but fully equipped with modern installations. The location is great, a walking distance from the center and easy access to the metro. The staff was super attentive and ensured, even before we arrived, that we would have the best possible setup for our group. If you’re traveling in a group and you’d like to have a cinematography experience, this is definitely the place to stay. Nothing
- Robert (8/5): Interesting experience in Kyoto to enjoy the Japanese vibe. - The villa brings the Japanese vibe, which was great. Big rooms, however, the beds were not really comfy, and I still had back pain after 5 days. The worst experience was with the washing machine, I tried 3 times to dry the clothes after washing, and they were still wet (2 kilos of clothes only...). Not according to my expectations...

- Sandra J (8/5): - Nice place, clean, good location. Walking distance to a few temples. Thresholds are low, so talk folks might need to duck.
- James (10/5): Machiya in Kyoto - Great location, a favorite bfast restaurant Rose was close, and two of my favorite bars (cocktails and beer) were also a 4 min walk. Property in great condition. Futons were too firm for side sleepers. My little infant loved it, but as always be careful of stairs. Property company was excellent and arranged for luggage transport and taxi.
