Guest Reviews

- Sarah (8/5): Well located traditional home - The location is amazing: a short stroll to Kodaiji Temple Bamboo forrest, Ninenzaka, Sannenzaka & so many beautiful temples. It was a fantastic experience living in a traditional home. We found the futon beds very hard. A couple of the beds were double stacked so a bit more comfortable but we didn't get the best sleep. Very narrow, steep staircase upstairs, it was fine for us & our teens but something to keep in mind when booking (we left our suitcases in the small room downstairs rather than lugging them up).
- Andreas (10/5): -
- Natalie (10/5): - The location was great, right near the iconic Sannenzaka slope so it was easy to visit early in the morning and late at night to avoid crowds. Its also close to the Kodai-ji shrine and its bamboo forest which had the best Autumn night time light show when we went in November. The apartment was so clean and cozy, and there were lots of special touches like robes, toothbrushes, razors, etc supplied. At the reception area, even more amenities were provided to stock up on before going to the accomodation. The washing machine also dried the clothes which was a big bonus. I would recommend staying here. The stairs are steep which was expected and was fine with me. The reception area is near the Kyoto station, and they deliver the bags to your accomodation for free. If you dont have anything to do in area, I would reccomend going with your bags to the accomodation before check in and exploring the nearby area, because otherwise you will need to take a taxi or bus at your own expense. The 2 rooms upstairs are really nice and each have a private entrance, but there is no soundproofing. This is also fine because the reception area provides earplugs if you need them. I love this area and would stay again.

- Danyelle (10/5): absolutely brilliant! Highly recommend - Everything! Clean, tidy and traditional The futons (only personal preference)
- brend (10/5): -
- ophir (8/5): - Great location - residential area close to kiyumizo tera.
Great apartment for a family of 4, good size, washer-dryer with soap provided was very useful. Personally, as I discovered, I prefer western mattresses to traditional Japanese ones, but this was part of the experience.
- Michael (10/5): A wonderful stay in the historic part of Kyoto - Absolutely wonderful staff! Checkin location near Kyoto station is far from the room, but the hotels taxi will take you there. The house is built in a very classic fashion. It had all amenities we could hope for. The location near Gion was fantastic because everything was easy to reach! The top floor (in the summer) can be a bit stuffy. Frequent ventilation necessary.
Casa in posizione tranquilla. Staff molto disponibile e cortese.
- KYRIACO (8/5): -
- Joel Martin (10/5): - Exactly what we were looking for: a traditional experience, close to the main streets, and with great service from the staff. I will definitely be back.
- Florence (9/5): Superb - Location
- Roman (10/5): We liked it a lot! - The location of the place is amazing - right in Gion, but in a lovely small alley - so it's quite and nice. But as you get out of your alley, it's close to everything - small restaurants, alleys and a bus station that will take you mostly anywhere.
The place was great, with everything we needed. Keep in mind that the sitting table is Japanese style, i.e you sit on the floor level. Might not be suitable for everyone, was fine for us.
- Anastasia (10/5): Exceptional - The property was wonderful. It was clean, aesthetically pleasing, and we were provided with all the amenities we needed such as microwave, kettle, toothpaste and toothbrush etc. The reception was close to Kyoto station which was convenient and the staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful. They transported our luggage to the house free of charge while we were sightseeing.
Additionally, they booked for us a taxi to take us to the train station after we checked out.
Overall, I am extremely happy with this booking. I liked everything about this booking but keep in mind that for older people this might not be a good choice given the steep staircase that leads to the bedrooms and that all the seating is close to the floor.
- Nakiesha (10/5): Amazing location! - The location was amazing! Right near bus stops and within walking distance to a lot of temple and shops. It was quiet and clean, overall just a really nice place to stay. Would definitely recommend staying here. N/A
- Jo (9/5): Perfect place for a 4-night stay in Kyoto. - Greta location. Beautiful heritage home. Nothing!
- Trang (10/5): Exceptional -
- Natalie (9/5): Superb - The traditional style. The location is top noch. Very clean. The cooking pots are all scratched unable to use. Good that we could live on convenient store food with microwave.
- Sonia (10/5): Amazing gem in the heart of southern Kyoto - The property is a Japanese style townhouse with bedrooms upstairs but all other amenities downstairs. It worked really well for us as we travelled with an older teenager so were able to have separate bedrooms which are adjacent and separated by a screen door which could be opened to join the two bedrooms together. Downstairs there was a lounge area, kitchen area with fridge, microwave and one cooking hob. The bathroom and toilet were separate, the bathroom had a washing machine which was great as we were mid trip and could wash essential items. In terms of location there are shrines in walking distance and the Gion area too. We were fortunate enough to see a Geisha. The bus stop just up the road also was easy to use for trips. There are also other train lines within walking distance as is the shopping area. Once we had our bearings getting around was really easy. Lots of places to eat close by. Just a couple of things to point out. You check in to the property at a hotel close to Kyoto train station and a paid for taxi is organised to take you to the property. Make sure that the driver shows you exactly where the property is and takes you to the door or you may struggle to find it. The property has steep relatively narrow stairs to get up to the bedrooms- we were fine with this but this may not work for everyone.
- Shu (8/5): Very good - Fantastic location, central to the old Kyoto area. We embraced the small living spaces typical of an accommodation like this. The main areas were ok but some areas were dusty.
- Linda (9/5): It was enjoyable. - The location was convenient to many sightseeing attractions, great eateries, and public transportation. The notch at the top of the steep stairs into the bedroom.
- Vincent (9/5): Another way of life. - Such an amazing experience, rather than just being accomodation. It gave a glimpse into another way of life and had lovely moments like staring at the beautiful shadows of the leaves against the windows at night in the bedroom or looking out at the little garden while in the shower. The upstairs bedroom doors could do with a sturdier clasp, as they opened onto a steep stairs and we had a one and a half year old daughter with us. By way of example, when you opened one door the other also opened without being touched.
- Francoise (8/5): Very good - the stairs were really steep - hard to carry the suitcase upstairs....
- Yuyin (7/5): Good -
- Jenny (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stanislav (9/5): Superb - Traditional townhouse Great location
- Basel (9/5): Superb -
- Norris (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dominique (9/5): Lovely typical Machiya in heart of Gion, cosy house. - We had to pick up te key at Hotel Rinn Kyoto station, which is only 10 min. walk from Kyoto station. The reception arranged a taxi for us to the house, so very convenient.
The house is a lovely Machiya, a typical small cityhouse from the past. But all modern and comfortably decorated. It is obviously pretty small, with a small living room a small kitchen and bath room. But all very cosy and nice and clean. In a small ( dead end) street and a 2m garden at the back. Very quiet!
If you open the windows, a green and relaxed atmosphere pops in from outside.
TWo bedroom, one with tatami mat and Futon and the other one with 2 Low beds on the ground.
The location is in the heart of Gion, close to supermarket and plenty of temples. Great location! IT is all quite tight, but with all the different rooms and doors very OK for 2 parenst and 3 kids ( teenagers)
- Nicholas (8/5): Great traditional stay in the heart of Kyoto. - The location was great, right in the traditional area of Kyoto. The street was quiet and safe. We loved the traditional feel of the accomodation. Nothing really. We understand that it is a traditional stay so you won't have your normal hotel / resort features. This may not be for everyone. The bedroom was really bright so you were unable to sleep in, and the staircase to walk up iq quite narrow so we left our suitcases downstairs.
- R (10/5): It was amazing, felt like home. - Free taxi, and it felt like home. Really comfortable and front desk was very detailed and accommodating. In my accommodating party one of our friends lost his passport on the way to the check in spot but the front desk still called the previous places to ask. They didn’t have to but they still did, which is above and beyond. I would definitely stay here again in the future. It was a little bit dusty, transportation is a bit far which couldn’t be helped but overall it was nice.
- Elizabeth (10/5): A cozy traditional stay in the heart of old Kyoto - The location was fantastic - it was easy to get around everywhere and easy to find
Staff at the Rinn Kyoto Station were super friendly and helpful
Such a lovely, cozy little house!
The bathroom facilities were excellent and the washer/dryer came in handy The futons in the first bedroom were a bit thinner than what we thought they might be but it was OK
- Rui (10/5): A beautiful experience in a traditional yet adequately modernised Japanese townhouse - The vibes were really nice. The place feels just like a traditional Japanese townhouse, and it was a really fresh and enjoyable experience. Of course, some parts (particularly the toilet) were very nicely modernised. It's also really convenient to be within walking distance to attractions such as Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine. If I really had to nitpick, the seats in the living room weren't terribly comfortable, though they add to the traditional townhouse vibes.
- Zanna (8/5): Great stay overall. With a bit of change it would be near perfect. Hope to visit again. - Very helpful staff, even brought umbrellas we forgot.
Great bathroom.
Great location even if you want to travel outside Kyoto, the bus stop is about 3 min walk and you can get to the main station in few minutes.
Hotel leaves plenty of guides and instructions to make the stay very comfortable. I write this with heavy heart because loved the place and hotel staff was amazing. But would like to point this out so there can be positive change. The amount of dust can be disturbing to people with allergies. The dust is swiped in most obvious places only (middle of the table) and the amount of it is weeks or months of “collecting”. Even decorative flower doesn’t look like flower anymore. Can be ignored but gets uncomfortable when you want to charge your phone next to bed, but you have to put your phone in lumps of dust to do so. Or have clean sheets get in it. Even the head-bed isn’t dusted when the sheet is changed. This is maybe minor problem to some but hope it gets fixed in the future.
- Lim (8/5): Enjoyable stay with cultural experience - Cute little traditional townhouse located close to a few attractions points in Kyoto. We enjoyed the stay very much. The stairs are very steep. Not recommended for group with older people because the bedrooms are all upstairs.
The pillows are a bit too soft to our likings.
- Jask91 (10/5): Perfect spot for old kyoto - Great place to stay. 10-15 min. Walk zu Kiyomizu-dera, 5 min. To kodaiji, 5 min. To gion, 5 min. To yasaka. The house is great and big enough for 3 adults, you can cook, you can reheat food, and even wash your clothes. And the bathroom was our dream. The check-in was smooth, the drive to the house was safe, and the driver was very helpful.
- Thibault (9/5): Superb -
- Kelsey (8/5): Very good -
- Tina (8/5): Good location and great facilities. - Great traditional accommodation with all facilities. Not too far from the key parts of Gion. Easy access to buses to reach other parts of Gion. Not enough coffee pods and the remote check in was a bit of a hassle especially with the additional fee for baggage delivery if you chose to leave your luggage in the reception area and make your own way to the accommodation. Check in after 4 was also quite late.
- Rosemis (9/5): Superb - Location was fantastic - super handy for early morning strolls to Yasaka pagoda and Kiyomizodera before the hordes of tourists arrive. Close to main road where taxis past by so was super handy. Great experience staying on a machiya in the private streets of Gion. Loved it. Stairs are really steep and narrow. Hubby has bad back so we ended up moving one of the futons downstairs for him to sleep on.
- Cooper (10/5): Exceptional - Great location with so many sites within walking distance. The apartment was clean and well stocked and the futons were comfortable. Nothing about the apartment, but my only comment is that it was difficult to find places to eat that weren't fine dining. A lot of places noted on Google maps weren't open.
- Helen (9/5): Lovely, cute, traditional Ryokan, great location - Lovely Ryokan stay. What you see is what you get. Clean. Functional in a small space. AC worked well. Walking distance to everything. Property owner very responsive. Right next to the beautiful Geisha district. Quiet.
NOTE: not for old people because the stairs are very tiny and steep to get up to the bedroom. And bathroom is on the main floor. There was no train or metro station near by. You need to walk at least 15-20 min to get to one. But there is a lot to see close by. We just happened to pick this as our base so ended up walking too much.
We wanted to try the Japanese futons experience but they were extremely thin just 1 inch thick so it was so uncomfortable. We had the impression of sleeping smack on the floor. Our body and back were so in pain after the 5 nights stay that we were looking forward to move to our next hotel bed. I think 2 nights here would have been perfect just to try the experience and see the Old Gion.
- Fiona (9/5): A lovely quaint property, excellent location - Location was excellent Nothing
- Rosario (10/5): Exceptional - Japanese house, clean, with the feeling to live in Japan.
Position
- Julio (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marek (8/5): Very good - surrounding of the appartment. there is a lot of landmarks to see. the stairs were the worst. they were way too steep. toilet was on 1st floor and bedding was on 2nd floor so if one has to go to toilet at night, it was quite dangerous. also light for the stairs was only on 1st floor so of you didnt leave the light on stairs on during night, you had to walk downstairs in dark. as i said, it was pretty dangerous.
- Karen (9/5): Superb -
- Tiffany (10/5): A Kyoto town house vibes with short distances to the famous attractions - Comfortable and the having the experience to live within the Tokyo neighbourhoods is so wonderful. Short walk to the Gion, and a few of the popular tourist attractions. Plenty of foods choices around, local Cafes are available from the early morning. You're greet with a torii on the main street before turning into the laneway to the accommodation. A little bit secluded but the direction map from the hotel helps. Working distance to the stations and bus stop.
House is comfy, warmth! Good size living and bathroom. The heated bath is the bonus where you can dip in after a long walking day on your trip. Great size bedroom and comfy beds. Carrying the luggage to the bedrooms can be very tricky. Recommend to have them at the ground level.
There is a little Japanese garden next to the kitchen, don't forget to pull up the blind to see them.
We enjoyed our stay very much and thank you for the hosting. Wishing you all the best! Perhaps a floor mat at the entry will help when the guests checkin during the wet weather. This is what happened to us, the wheels of the luggages are wet and we had to find a towels to clean the wheels before taking them inside the floors/rooms.
We suggesting putting the blind up in the kitchen area show the guest would see the landscape when entering the accommodation instead of facing the walls and curtains. The landscape is beautiful and calming!
- Veronica (8/5): - Beautiful home with traditional furnishings. Clean and well situated. The stairs make taking luggage upstairs a little tricky as they are narrow and steep. Only hiccup was instructions for controls/ washing machine unclear. Instructional pictures provided did not match actual machine and difficult to figure out. Tried to get help from hotel for transportation upon check out but was told to get a taxi on the street. Otherwise, very cute home to stay in, nice to have a livinroom and kitchen area.
- Veronica (10/5): Exceptional - a lovely traditional Japanese house experience and our family absolutely loved everything about it! it is located in one of the most historic and beautiful town of Kyoto, and it’s not hard to find the place at all. staff at the reception is very friendly and kind, always there to help you reach your needs. I am also very impressed by the amenities they provide for free to all customers, it really made our stay there much more convenient and comfortable. it’s a very beautiful house! near the bedside there were some dust. it didn’t affect my stay at all because everything else was perfect! but I hope they can clean it for the next guests.
- Liwei (8/5): Very good - the stair is slightly narrow, will be a little difficult for elderly.
- Minh-thu (9/5): Those seeking an experience living in a traditional home in Kyoto should definitely stay here. - This is my first time staying over a traditional home in Kyoto in the beautiful Higashiyama ward just a few minutes away from the Donguri (Ghibli) store. It was a lovely experience! We were in a townhouse with two floors. There were two spacious bedrooms upstairs, one where you have the option to spread the futon out, the other with two twin beds. My friend chose to sleep on the twin bed, me on the futon in the other room (for the traditional experience sleeping on the tatami!). Both options were comfortable as we both slept well during our stay. I also love the entryway and the living room.
I also want to point out how incredibly kind and helpful the staff at the reception desk were throughout our stay: during the luggage storage process, the check in/check out, whenever we called them to ask questions. They also responded fast and in english the few times I wrote to them before we arrived. The reception desk is not near the townhouse. It's at the Rinn Kyoto station. They however take care of calling a taxi for you at check-in that will drive you to your townhouse as well as cover the taxi fee.
I spotted a few stains on some walls in our home.
Certain appliances were not intuitive to use even with the explanations they provided on their guidebook, since the buttons were in japanese. However the google translate camera app helped us navigate through and the staff as previously mentioned were very helpful (there was a button on the wall we didn't know we had to leave turned on otherwise the water stays cold - so they came over to show us that).
Not all staff speaks english - they ensured there was a staff that can speak english at check in. After that when we had questions there, there were no english speaking staff. I communicated with them fine however in basic japanese.
- Robert (9/5): Superb - All Except that it was difficult to find the house
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
