- Ignacio (4/5): Not what we expected - The staff were super friendly. The pub downstairs was beautiful, but we didn't get the chance to enjoy it as it was closed.
It looks like a beautiful heritage building.
It does the job for 1 night. There is only 1 toilet and 2 showers for males and the same for females for all the room to use. There are 10 rooms that have to share this.
The Males toilet was flooded from the shower use.
You can hear everything between rooms.
The bed mattresses are super soft. The carpet in the bedroom was sticky and disgusting.
Location is alright, a bit out of the way if you are planning on going to the wineries around polkobin.
There is no parking from the hotel. Just park on the street.
It's definitely not a romantic place for a weekend getaway.
- sharyn (10/5): Staff were very accommodating. Room was spacious and the beds extremely comfortable -
- Jennifer (9/5): Great value country pub, close to all venues in lower Hunter. - Excellent value comfy room for three to share. Great location to Qirkz music venue, where we headed on the night. Clean bathroom with plenty of hot water. Nil
- Michael (7/5): - Old fashioned pub stay. Rooms are neat. Would have liked the bar to be open longer
- Phillip (8/5): Good value, comfortable and straightforward pub accommodation - The hotel was a straightforward good value for money pub. Had been renovated recently and was comfortable. The check in process was via a key box, but all went smoothly due to excellent communication via text. A small guest kitchen with a fridge and toaster and microwave was a bonus. Nil

- Lina (9/5): Great little spot, lovely hotel and lovely experience! - Very charming, lovely old hotel with beautiful rooms! And very friendly manager who was welcoming to our whole multigenerational family! The confirmation email said there was a cafe onsite for breakfast. It is closed (not sure how long for). Keep this in mind - you may need to drive ~10 mins to get some brekky.
- Richard (8/5): Comfortable, quiet, warm. - The phone contact with the owners particularly as they were with a family member at hospital. We found the instructions we were given were enormously helpful even though there appeared to be no staff on the premises. A very comfortable and quiet stay. Can’t think of anything. Although we weren’t able to get the air-con working it wasn’t really an issue as the doonas were superbly warm.
- Jason (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jakki (10/5): Exceptional -
- Natasha (6/5): Pleasant -
- Deals63 (8/5): Clean and comfortable - We really enjoyed our stay, the accommodation was lovely and clean, comfortable and convenient.
We had dinner there that evening which was ok ( think we should have ordered the pizza as looked like their signature dish) We were very disappointed to find out that although breakfast was advertised and breakfast menus were on show ( there wasn't any)
So we went searching Abermain high and low for a coffee next morning and a local said that the only place we were going to get one was Ridgey Didge pies.
We had to drive to Cessnock and 1hr wait for breakfast with children 😔
- Mark (10/5): Friendly country pub - Clean friendly N/A
- Geoff (7/5): Convenient location to QIRKZ. - Comfortable bed. Lots of water on the floor in the shower stall
Inadequate supplies for a cup of tea in the tea room.
- Greg (8/5): Very good -
- Jean (10/5): Fantastic night out comfy stay and delicious breakfast - We really liked the family friendly atmosphere of the hotel. Sharing a toilet with all other guests.
- Georgina (6/5): Gorgeous building and boutique feel - The hotel is a beautiful old building, full of character and I can tell a lot of work has gone into creating a really boutique feel. Having a little shared kitchen area is a great idea. The showers are hot and plenty of pressure and the soap smells good! The place was quiet and the owner was really friendly. Abermain itself is REALLY small so the hotel is somewhat of a community hub having a bar, cafe, restaurant and barbers as well as the accommodation. Personally, I found the beds a little soft (for me). There were a few bits of maintenance that wouldn't take that long but would make a big difference. There is a balcony that's being held up with three props - not surprised - the hotel was built in 1905 but it was sad to see (but would cost a LOT of money to fix I suspect)
- Mcmahon (4/5): Suited us for an overnight stay. - Friendly staff. Great breakfast & coffee. Poor old pub that needs some serious money spent on exterior and some updates. Clearly was a great building in the past.
- Leonie (8/5): Great value hotel accomodation - great large rooms with very comfortable beds
nice staff
good amenities a little far from town to walk and taxis don't show up
- Marisilina (9/5): Superb -
- VINCENT (8/5): - Great staff, clean rooms with nice mattresses.
- Leonie (7/5): Good -
- Andrew (10/5): We stayed for a wedding awesome set up - Great spot had a lovely time
- Jamie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tammy (9/5): Superb -
- Morgan (5/5): Passable -
- Kellie (6/5): Good and bad. - Set up and cleanliness of rooms was outstanding. Lunch was such value for money, most staff were lovely (shoutout to the bar staff on in the arvo) We had booked 4 rooms - unfortunately one of the rooms air cons did not work. Staff were aware it was broken and did not inform us. Fans were offered, but were insufficient. There appeared to be rooms that were not in use so unsure why we couldn’t use another room or another solution would be to provide some form of sufficient cooling. Very uncomfortable, hot night.
No compensation was offered, nor apology. Really put a dampener on our stay.
Insufficient tollets after hours - there was only one toilet for 10 of us and there were at least 4 others staying there.
- Kellie (4/5): Disappointing - It was clean. Lunch was good. Very unpleasant stay. Air conditioning did not work and it was incredibly uncomfortable. Staff aware air conditioning did not work and their solution was a fan which only pushed hot air around. No apology offered and no compensation. There appeared to be rooms not being used so unsure why swap could not be made or as were were a large group rooms could not be reconfigured to allow for a more comfortable sleep. As a group we effectively paid for 4 rooms and only 3 were usable.
Toilet facilities also insufficient - one toilet available for at least 14 people staying overnight. There were toilet downstairs but there were not accessible after hours.
- Maritza (7/5): Good -
- Tamara (9/5): Great room, clean, comfortable, convenient, and heaps of character. - Beautiful old pub, heaps of character and great food options for dinner, and breakfast. Air conditioning in our large 5 bedder would have been nice as it was a hot night.
- Scales (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nicole (9/5): Superb -
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Deb (10/5): Abermain Hotel - Delicious food, comfy beds, clean bathrooms - We stayed 3 nights in mid-January - Fri to Mon. Check-in process was simple at the bar.
We were visiting relatives that live in Abermain and were eating with them over the weekend so we only needed a place to sleep and shower, but we decided to have dinner at the bistro on Friday night after we settled into our room. It was delicious. My husband ordered the Friday night mixed grill special (it was a very generous serving) and I ordered the rissoles. It was so good to taste traditional country rissoles that reminded me of my grandmother's and mum's cooking. We noticed that dishes going to other tables were generous servings too.
Our room was surprisingly spacious (we were in Room 5) with bedside tables provided which have 2 decent size drawers that you could use to unpack your suitcase if you were staying more than just a couple of nights. Hanging space with coat hangers and other shelves was also in the room. They have a cute pull cord to turn the room light on in keeping with by-gone era.
The bed was really comfortable and the housekeeping staff gladly swapped my pillow for one that was better suited to me. The bathrooms are clean, offering a single shower cubicle and a shower over bath option. Shower gel is provided and there was a hair dryer in the cupboard under the sink in the ladies bathroom. It was unfortunate that staff thought it necessary to use a leaf blower in the beer garden before 8:30am on the Sunday morning. Our room overlooked the back section of the pub.
- Ebony (10/5): For a fussy homebody like myself I couldn’t have asked for better accommodation. The beds were some of the best I’ve sle - The property is in the process of some updates on the outside……..the inside is warm inviting and comfortable. The beds were like sleeping in the comfort of my own bed at home. The stairs………only because I have a knee injury that was being difficult the time that I stayed there. They do however add to the character of the place
- Ebony (10/5): Excellent value for money, fantastic accommodation. You will not be disappointed. For a country hotel they are top notch - Everything
- Anne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kirrilly (7/5): Good -
- Sornthida (8/5): - Bar and restaurant were closed unfortunately otherwise quiet and clean
- Ashleigh (8/5): Very good -
- Kevin (10/5): - Was a bit small for a room with 3 beds
- Ali (7/5): Great family short stay - You can tell the rooms have been recently updated and lots is happening at the hotel, it’s all been done very nicely.
The staff were exceptionally friendly especially those in the cafe. There were a couple of slights hiccups with our room but it was rectified by staff.
- Haydo (7/5): Low key comfort - The room, bed, linen, and towels were great, and the bathroom was good for shared. The shared kitchen? Was a mess, looked like the morning after a big party. Couldn't stomach making a cup of coffee unfortunately. Great that there is a kitchen but I couldn't use it.
- Sue (8/5): Very good -
- Sharon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (10/5): Excellent stay and very good value for money - Excellent stay and great value for money! The beds were incredibly comfy and modern, and the 120 year old pub was very charming. Breakfast at the cafe downstairs was also great!
- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rob (10/5): - Quaint, friendly.
- Sophie (10/5): Hunter Valley gem - Very pleasantly surprised by this little Hunter Valley gem. Tucked away in a back street, it was quiet and friendly. Staff were super helpful and friendly; food was good, beer garden catered to children and place was very clean and fresh. So refreshing to get good old fashioned customer service that hasn't become corporatised or automated by big business. Love also the history of the pub itself.
I'd recommend the Abermain to others looking for an affordable and friendly place to stay while in the Hunter.
- Kathryn (7/5): Beautiful old pub - Beautiful old pub, loved the history and character of the hotel. The room was comfortable and clean. Food in the bistro and cafe was nice. Lovely beer garden. Staff friendly and accommodating. The room was over priced, communal women’s bathroom had one toilet to share between all rooms. For the price we paid, there was no milk in the kitchen to make a cuppa and no tap for water to fill the kettle, you needed to take the kettle to the bathroom. If the room was under $100 I would have had no complaints. We were there for wedding and can only feel the price we paid was because of our circumstances. Not the best location but was perfect for us due to the wedding.
- Velma (8/5): - Lack of coffee , milk and sugar in the kitchen.
- Mandy (5/5): Passable -
- Lauren (6/5): - Overall bedroom was clean and tidy, the tea room however had a very rancid smell. Not sure it was worth the money paid for a pub experience.
- Emma (9/5): Great value - perfect for a stopover in the Hunter Valley! - Cosy room and perfect for a stay over in the Hunter Valley. Very friendly & relaxed welcome from the lady there. For the price, we were very happy and everything was nice and clean. Good selection of craft beers in the bar and the coffee shop downstairs in the morning was very nice, and the beer garden was lovely. All good!
- Fiona (10/5): - Staff were very friendly. The room and beds were very comfortable and the meals were excellent. We enjoyed our stay
- Robyn (7/5): Good - Location, cafe
- Lee (8/5): Very good -
- Stephen (8/5): Peaceful - Well looked after Closed by the time I finished work so couldn’t have a refreshing ale
- Kathy (8/5): Very good -
- Marlene (9/5): Superb -
- Stephen (8/5): Very good - Clean, and comfortable Wasn’t quite the location I had thought. Our event was in Maitland so a bit of a trip to get there.
- Kathryn (8/5): Enjoyed my stay the staff were friendly. Was value for money. - The Hotel was quant and clean. The shared kitchen could have more items for a quick breakfast and a sink and microwave. Walking to the bathroom during the night
- Trish (8/5): Very good - Great little pub, nice food and very relaxing Bar closed a bit early, this was our second stay and closed at 8pm
- Kerry-anne (7/5): Good -
