Guest Reviews
- Jessica (10/5): - We are so in love with Punta Caliza!
Everyone at the the hotel were so kind and wonderful to chat with. The pool, beach club and food were amazing! We can’t wait to return.
- Rebecca (10/5): Affordable luxury! - Staying at Punta Caliza was an unforgettable experience! The welcome mezcalita, the friendliness and eagerness of Leo, the room, the tower, the food and, of course, the pool! Amazing
- Hugo (8/5): - Beautiful hotel. Bed super comfortable, walk to the beach and someone is there to greet you with a drink. Breakfast was delicious.
- Amy (8/5): - The hotel is Very Unique and architecturally beautiful.
The staff was wonderful and very helpful.
The restaurant was lovely and the menue although limited is definitely worth trying for dinner and their breakfasts are wonderful and included with your stay.
The pool is really cute and their beach iclub s a short 10 minute walk away.
That being said I will say the following as a possible warning or heads up to certain groups who may be interested in staying here.
The hotel is very small and the little a frame cabins are open air at the top therefore you can hear everything from the cabin next door. Ie when they are going to to the toilet you can hear everything and vice versa.
Therefore if you are really modest or perhaps on your honeymoon and want a lot of privacy... This is not the hotel for you
Also, it rained for 2 days at the beginning of our stay and while the whole town was submersed in water and the roads basically impassible they all cleared the following day.
The two main roads along this corber lot hotel we're still impassible when we left after 8 nights
Small golf carts could not get to the hotel and there aren't any side walks to access it.
Therefore any one with mobility issues at all or probably anyone who doesn't want to have to cling to trees and use a flashlight etc this probably isn't the hotel for you as it rains a lot here throughout the year.
The hotel is really cute and we really enjoyed our stay though.
- Andrew (10/5): Divine - Punta Caliza is other worldly, a delightful escape from the pace of everyday life. It’s one of those places you don’t really want to tell too many people about, keep it a secret! July, Max, Leo and the entire team were incredibly accommodating prior to and throughout our stay. The room was very comfortable, amazing shower. The highlight is the central pool with private access from each room. Breakfast each morning was unique and tasty. We had dinner a few times at the hotel and enjoyed the entire menu (and the cocktails!) Caliza has its own beach club about 5min walk away, never too busy and great cocktails. We will return again!
- Nancy (8/5): - Very nice place to stay close to town
- Anna (10/5): - We loved our stay at Punta Caliza!! The staff were all Amazing. We will definitely be back!!
- Juan (10/5): - Enjoyed the staff super nice more of a chill spot. If you are trying to play music definitely not the place .
- craig (10/5): - This is an amazing hotel with excellent service food and rooms. Highly recommend
- Hilary (10/5): - The hotel was spotless and the staff beyond amazing! I would definitely recommend staying at this beautiful hotel!
- Savannah (10/5): One of our favourite trips - Absolutely 10/10. Beautiful property with such attention to design details. Amazing location steps from the beach, with a hotel beach club as well where you can use their chairs for free. All the staff were incredible, so kind, polite and attentive. The food and drinks were phenomenal and some of the best we had on the island. Thank you and we will be back!
- Spencer (10/5): - Perfect location steps from the nicest part of the beach. Staff was lovely, and the free breakfast was varied and delicious.
- Nicole (10/5): - This hotel exceeded my expectations.
The staff were amazing, especially Max and Julie who knew us by name day one. Julie provided us with recommendations to great local spots and kept us informed on fun local events to check out.
The included breakfast was delicious. The beach club was in a great location and just a short walk away. The bar and restaurant service at the beach club was also lovely.
The location of the hotel overall is great. It's a bit of a quieter spot than right down town, but it's a short walk or taxi to get there if you want.
Would go back in a heartbeat!
- Ella (10/5): - We loved our stay! The staff are amazing, it feels like a little oasis with an easy walk to centre town and the beach club. The breakfast was incredible and you have to have the coconut milk iced coffee in the morning.
- Jacques (10/5): - Beautiful
- Gabriela (10/5): - Amazing stay. Definitely will come back here.
- Erin (10/5): - The staff made this the best stay! The food, the beautiful room, the pool, the attention…omg!
- Teresa (10/5): - What a wonderful place to make memories with the family! The 7 of us stayed at Punta Caliza for 11 blissful days. What a dream:)
The staff and ambiance were incredible!! Such a zen setting.
The rooms were cool with a/c, and they had various shades to adjust for light levels. The beds were very comfortable. The architecture, complete with private dipping pool and large main pool, was so inviting. The food was amazing - those breakfasts were so good! The service from the staff at the hotel and at the beach club was exceptional!
Thank you so very much to Max, Irvine, July, Leo, Diego, and the other amazing guy at the beach club - plus others on staff - all of you, so wonderful! Thanks for looking after us, from start to finish, for a fantastic experience, Max! You are amazing!
Even prior to our stay, communication was prompt, helpful, and friendly.
We wish we were back at Punta Caliza again, already! Definitely book this place. You won't regret it. We plan to return asap:)
- Katie (10/5): - Hotel itself and hotel room were beautiful, clean and unique.
Hotel was 2 min walk from stunning beach and 5-10 min walk from town. 3 min taxi drive from the port. Really ideal location.
Traditional Mexican dishes to try for breakfast each morning which was so nice and fun.
Staff were always really friendly and helpful and spoke amazing English (and tried to help us with our Spanish!).
We can’t remember the lady’s name with the brown hair (sorry!!) but she was great - thank you so much for all your help we really appreciate it.
Overall can’t fault our stay we loved it and would come back in a heartbeat.
- Turina (10/5): - Beautiful architecture and incredible service!
- Cesar (10/5): - Recommend this place to everyone. It’s not too far from downtown.
- Jerold (10/5): - All the staff were so pleasant and helpful.
- Ivan (10/5): - Excellent people. Nice place and wonderful views.
- Dana (10/5): - We absolutely loved our stay at Punta Caliza! The hotel was the perfect blend of boho and chic accommodations and the staff was absolutely wonderful! The staff knew us by name and were extremely friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was amazing and the beach club had great ceviche. Our only disappointment was that the pool was a bit cold so we didn’t end up using that amenity. Would definitely stay here again!
- Kezia (10/5): - The hotel was absolutely beautiful. Loved our stay!
- Rob (10/5): - The property was as shown on Expedia. A little oasis in itself. Staff were excellent and were helpful and courteous. Breakfast was excellent, with many options.
- jose (10/5): - Quiet and the service was excelent!
Great staff
- Erenia (10/5): - Everything was pleasant! The rooms are beautiful!
- Josee (10/5): - Amazing architecture, very peaceful, and the staff was wonderful.
- Paris (10/5): - Isla Holbox is a little hidden paradise. Punta Caliza is a very unique and beautiful place to stay, it makes you feel like you’re in a remote jungle village deep in the island but with beautiful designed rooms made out of beautiful wood. The rooms have everything you need for the modern traveler but it still gives you the feel of being in touch with nature, especially when one can access the pool from your very own room. All the rooms come together at this lagoon like pool where you can interact with other guests or cool off from a hot day or after being at the beach. Family owned hotel where their focus is to make their guests feel part of the family, don’t be surprised to see the owners in the property interacting with the guests and improving their facilities. They offer a vast variety of services, including a daily breakfast where their focus on elevated cuisine flourishes, one can also dine on the premises with a full menu for both, the dining room and the bar, a beach club with a full bar, lounge chairs and a great view of the beach. In addition they own a restaurant just a few minutes from the hotel where you can enjoy great tacos such as pulpo (octopus), their signature shrimp tacos or the vegetarian option, the cauliflower tacos. If you like mezcal, they also have mezcal tastings at both locations. The hotel is just a block away from the beach but that little walk is well worth it. When it comes to transportation they make it hassle free. They arrange it for you.
- Ricardo (10/5): - The property is gorgeous and very unique
- matt (2/5): - Avoid this place. Power outages daily, and their generator only powers water. Neighboring hotels have full generators; choose one of them.
There were about 15 things that went wrong during our (Honeymoon) stay, but I'll just stick to the worst:
I made a cup of coffee in the room with the Nespresso machine they provided. I took a sip, and it tasted like alcohol. I had not had a drop of alcohol in over four years. My wife and I are both sober. We told them this when they offered us a welcome drink at check-in. I smelled the tank of the Nespresso, and it smelled like alcohol.
I brought it to the front desk, and an employee working named Irving agreed that it smelled like alcohol. My wife went back up a bit later, and he said that he and the rest of the staff figured out it smelled and tasted like gin.
**
Management refused to speak to us during our entire stay there, instead relaying info through the front desk staff. We told them we drank a lot of coffee and even requested extra Nespresso pods. I am trying not to think that the gin in the tank was intentional because we complained about some issues after we saw our room, but based on how we were treated the rest of our stay, I can't rule it out.
Additionally, the beach club included in the room's cost was covered in seaweed and unswimmable. The staff at the club told us the entire island was inundated. We luckily found out day 2 that Punta Coco had clean beaches, so we spent $100 a day on cabs and chairs elsewhere. Avoid.
- William (10/5): A True Oasis in Holbox. Mexico - Our recent stay at Punta Caliza in Holbox, Mexico was an absolute dream come true. This enchanting hotel left me spellbound with its extraordinary design, breathtaking location, impeccable service, delectable food, and inviting pool. The staff's attentive and personalized approach added an extra touch of magic to the entire experience. Punta Caliza is a true gem that we can't recommend enough and will return again and again!
- Alexandra (10/5): - 5/5 absolutely adored this beautiful hotel - the staff was so accommodating and everything from the rooms, breakfast, to the location was perfect. we agreed that this was the best place on the island
- rebecca (6/5): Overpriced - I’m just getting around to jot down my opinion of this place. Property is ok. Staff was ok. Food was good. We had an issue with the shower. The water wasn’t draining and it smelled awful. Long story short, my husband pulled out the biggest, grossest, smelliest hair ball I have ever seen. When we brought this up to the front desk he told us to send an email to the owner-which we did and never received a reply. Our room also had massive spider webs. The bed was comfortable. There are two robes in each room and one was used and hanging up outside the door to the pool. I can’t remember the young smiley staff who was practicing his English but his vibe was everything. We loved him.
- Diana (10/5): heaven on earth! - we adored our stay at the punta caliza — the food was great, staff was so friendly, and of course the overall ambience was so chic and stylish! the included breakfast in the morning was such a special treat, and we loved the beach club area as well. recommend it wholeheartedly!
- Ayala (10/5): - Just a perfect place with perfect hosts and wonderful design and energy. We absolutely loved it!
- Eve Abrahams (10/5): - We loved this hotel. It is on the quiet side of town and it is an absolutely beautiful property. The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly and helpful.
- Benjamin (10/5): Amazing! - Fantastic place, AMAZING food, wonderful staff and beautiful architecture! Don’t worry about it not being oceanfront. The ocean is a two minute walk away and they have a nice beach club for guests on the beach.
- Maximiliano (10/5): - Great location and beautiful property. We love the design and the quality of the property. Staff very friendly and helpful.
- Hannah (8/5): A true escape - The architecture was what drew me to this property. The beautiful red cedar, the gorgeous lines of the building… it’s so serene and well appointed. The service was also excellent. The front desk/bar staff did double duty but never made you feel like they were too busy to help. They were so friendly and attentive.
I only wish it were warmer when we were there because the pool was super cold and to be honest, didn’t look all that clean during our short stay. I would still stay here again despite the longer trek to Isla Holbox!
Oh, and Siena the hotel dog is so cute and well behaved. We loved having her around at breakfast.
- Erika (10/5): - Punta Caliza is absolute paradise in Holbox. We were welcomed by an extremely friendly staff (Cerillo, Brenda and Alex) during a rainstorm, with flowers in our room to commemorate our anniversary and welcome drinks. Our room was beautiful, very clean, quiet, and architecturally brilliant. We enjoyed our delicious morning breakfasts, talks over drinks with the great staff, we even met the owners who were also very friendly and sweet, we'll miss our lunches and late night snacking. The beach is also only a short walk away as well as the center of Holbox and their beach club is amazingly cute! This hotel and its people made our first stay on the island amazing! We highly recommend Punta Caliza to everyone.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The people, the place, the pool. All outstanding.
- Stephen (6/5): WARNING - unsanitary conditions - WARNING - We stayed at Punta Caliza for 2 days. When arriving at the Hotel we noticed that the pool, which was the main reason we choose this hotel, was dirty. The water was green which is a sign of no chlorine being in the water. Chlorine is essential to keep the water safe and free of dangerous pathogens that make you sick. It is critical to use the correct amount of chemicals, especially in Mexico where they use non-potable water to fill pools and in the main water supply for Holbox Island. After much hesitation I decided to put my feet in the water. I tried to step out of the room where there is a small 4x6 private pool next to each room. I stepped into the water and completely fell in to a 5’ deep pool. There was no step and no warning how deep the pool was. The next day when arriving at the airport I began to feel sick. I had terrible stomach pains. When we arrived back home in the US I had severe diarrhea and vomiting for 7 days.
I emailed the hotel and they very rudely responded that the “pool is safe”. But I know that the pool water was green and I didn’t see any moving water or filtration system working. The photos of Punta Caliza show rooms that are connected to the main pool. I believe the dirty unsanitary pool water made me sick and I had a terrible case of Travelers Diarrhea. Now I have to worry about some parasites growing in my stomach and it will be necessary to take powerful medicine to kill any worms! Photo shows green water and mold growing on walls!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing customer service. They coordinated the whole transfer to and from the hotel. Food at the hotel was fantastic. Breakfast everyday was 10/10. Highly recommend! Will stay there next time I am in Holbox.
- Leni (10/5): The coolest Hotel in Holbox - A very unique Hotel, the architecture is amazing so perfect for the island of Holbox the rooms are very confortable and beautiful surrounded with tropical woods and a soon as you wake up you can plunge in to the pool . The service is great so friendly and food is outstanding
- Anna (10/5): - Amazing. Great location. Unique design. Clean. Charming.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff is amazing! Very helpful and go out of the way to make the stay perfect!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved the beautiful architecture and laid back setting. Staff was very friendly and served delicious food and drinks
- Lorenzo (10/5): - My stay at punta caliza was amazing! I loved the architecture of the hotel, the breakfast each day was delicious and Alex was a wonderful and fun host! Will certainly be returning next year!
- Jasmine (10/5): - Gorgeous architecture, delicious food, helpful staff!
- Martha (10/5): Fell in love - It's a lovely place, so nice. The pool was a couple steps from my door and the room was amazing it has a patio and goes directly to the pool is family own and they are so friendly. Definitely I'm coming back
- Roman (8/5): - Over all it was a pleasant stay. Hotel’s beach area is a bit of a walk. Road access to the beach is quite dirty. I would not recommend walking barefooted through that area.
Breakfast was good and staff people are nice as well.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was like a dream. Beautiful room, the staff is super chill & friendly. Well versed in English & Spanish some even Italian. They wander away at times but everyone needs a break. The pool is amazing love being able to just walk out to the pool from my room & back.
- Arlene (8/5): - First of all, the concept of this hotel makes the stay worth it! with that said- I must say- the owner is not very friendly- there were several times I specifically said good morning or good night with no response- literally on their phone like no one else was around, that seems to be the culture also since another front desk staff member who seems to be very close to the owner (and works the evenings) shares the attitude. With that said, this place has two GEMS of staff members, Alex (who works the mornings) and Martitia, the cook, are so awesome and made our stay as wonderful as it was, taking away the bad experience of the others. Alex is so nice, he will serve breakfast and engage in conversation with everyone, he is very personable and quickly became like a friend of us. Martita is the cook and her food is AMAZING to say the least- we looked forward to breakfast every morning! If you stay here I recommend you eat all your meals here, Martita is no joke a GREAT cook and could make a billion dollars if she opened her own restaurant. She is a great asset to this place.
- JavierRuiz (10/5): - Friendly and helpful hosts. Cozy rooms. Great drinks and food. Great tour suggestions. Six out of five.
- James (10/5): Stay here - Stay was amazing. The hotel is very unique and definitely worth the price.
Highly reccomendations staying at pints caliza
- Elleser (10/5): Will come back over and over again - I am most likely coming back to this hotel. It's well designed and it's so special. I only wish their wifi is better.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is one of the most unique places we have ever stayed! Staff was super helpful. Hotel was super close to the beach. Will definitely stay again.
- Anni (10/5): - I really loved our stay at Punta Caliza. The staff were all so fantastic, nice and super helpful. The room, the pool, the dining area/bar, and the exclusive beach bar and beach chairs, the bikes were wonderful. They make a mean mezcal margarita and other mezcal based drinks that really turned me into a fan of mezcal. The only negative was that the WiFi was only available by the pool/dining/ bar area but that was just fine. Good to unplug on vacation anyway! Anyway, our trip was such a unique experience for us. I highly recommend staying at punta caliza. You won’t be disappointed.
- Melissa (10/5): - Punta Caliza is. beautifully designed hotel in a special place in the world. I love that is is family owned, and the staff are so friendly. I can certainly recommend the mezcal margaritas!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Punta Caliza is an amazing property. It has a small, intimate, boutique feel that is amplified by the warmth and friendliness of the staff. The rooms are very comfortable. The free breakfast every morning offered something new every day, and always delicious. Can't wait to come back.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Even when I was actually here I couldn't believe that Punta Caliza was real, it's just that incredible. The food and service is amazing but they do lack some of the things you might at more mainstream hotels like mini bars and coffee makers. Why you would make coffee in your room instead of walking the short distance to the bar and getting fresh coffee there is beyond me but I guess some people need all the standard hotel amenities to be happy.
- Laura Mike (10/5): - What a beautiful property! The architecture captures a feeling of privacy while still keeping you connected to the land and the space. The members of the team who work here are so friendly and helpful. From the moment we arrived at the airport in Cancun, they went above and beyond to make our time here enjoyable. The food was exciting and delicious and mezcal drinks very enjoyable. Overall, deciding to stay at Punta Caliza was one of the best of the trip to Holbox. We will never forget it!
- Susan (10/5): - This is the most unique boutique hotel I have ever been to. I picked this place solely on the photos I saw online. Seeing it all in real life totally met my expectations.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The best hotel in Holbox by far. The architecture and design of the hotel is gorgeous, the staff is friendly and helpful. Food is amazing. A must stop in the island.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Thrilled with our stay at Punta Caliza and definitely plan to come back. This place is a gem of a property in a beautiful and relaxing area, I can't recommend it enough. We shared a double as a group of 3 and it was fine, although I'd love to come back with my husband as it is a very romantic hotel and location! Bonus: by staying here, you're supporting a women and family run business.
- RomCasa (10/5): - The pool, the private beach, the food breakfast and also dinner the chef is amazing
- Heather (10/5): - All round fantastic. We had 2 rooms - for our family of 4 - superb service. We all had an amazing stay. Would return in a heartbeat.
- David (6/5): Ovarated - It seemed to me largely ovarated compared to other options available.
The rooms are comfortable and fresh with the swimming pool around and the bar is very nice to take some pictures for social networks. But besides that there isn't much more, you have to walk to reach the beach (and you have a lot of good options next to the beach), the service is mediocre and beach bar is poor.
You can find way much better options for this price range.
- MAYOLA (10/5): Punta Caliza is a DREAM! - Punta Caliza is a DREAM! 1 block from the beach and just far enough from the hustle and bustle of the town square so that there is peace and quiet at night. The hotel staff was amazing and super accommodating. The architecture is beautiful and Holbox is a total dream. I don't typically need the bells and whistles when I'm on vacation and PC offers just the right about of luxury to feel like a 5 star hotel without the fancy amenities. 10/10 - I highly recommend!
- Celina (10/5): Gorgeous property run by an equally lovely family - We absolutely loved our stay at Punta Caliza! The rooms, like the entire property, are thoughtfully designed and tastefully decorated, and the food and drink are beyond great. We loved chatting with the property's lovely bartender, Gustavo, who is incredibly knowledgeable about Mezcal and was happy to share other tips about the island with us. The owners' daughter, Claudia, is also a complete gem and really made our stay special. Highly recommend!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Perfect Holiday Getaway - Punta Caliza was everything we wanted in a boutique hotel & more. The staff is attentive & kind, the breakfast is delicious & made with care & attention, location is perfect & the facilities are breathtaking. Don't change a thing because I'm planning on coming back!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Each room has its own plunge pool which then leads out to the swimming pool - architecturally it was incredible. The staff were very welcoming. Breakfast was delicious! The beach area is a slight walk away from the property, but the beds are very comfy and the staff are also very friendly. Delicious food!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Punta Caliza is an absolutely beautiful boutique design hotel in Isla Holbox. It’s off the main thoroughfare and feels quiet/intimate. There are only about 15 rooms total so it’s the perfect sanctuary if you aren’t looking for a classic beach hotel. Food and cocktails were also stellar! Note, this hotel is about a 1 block walk from the beach road on a quiet side street and the designated beach area is another block from there.
The only constructive criticism I would provide is that the staff were rather lax when trying to book services (ie a massage at which we showed up at our appt and found out it was cancelled due to weather w no previous notice).
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The stay was fantastic, all of the staff were great. The fact that the owners and the chef were very present and approachable - even as far as them offering tastings from the bar & kitchen - made the stay even more enjoyable. I've already recommended Punta Caliza to 2 friends who loved photos of the hotel. I'll be coming back in the future, it was so great and some of the best food that we had during our stay on the island was at the hotel.
I only have 2 minor suggestions -
Cold water - it would be nice to have self-serve access to cold water throughout the day, perhaps the cooler/jug that's used during breakfast could be left out during the day with water. Not a big issue, staff were always available to provide it at request and there was a container of water supplied in the room - just not cold.
Hair dryer - it would be nice to have a little hair dryer under the sink in the bathroom in the future
The hotel staff were great in setting up all accommodations with day excursions and taxi/shuttle services. They had great (and extremely accurate) recommendations for food & drinks on the rest of the island and everybody knew somebody - which was a great touch.
The front desk staff were very clear and communicative leading up to our check-in and everything until we checked out - shout out to Perla for all of the help!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The building itself is amazing. Staff was cordial, but felt understaffed.
- Nancy (10/5): A GREAT choice - Punta Caliza is one of the most beautiful hotels anywhere....a simple, aesthetic beauty of wood and water. Honestly, I cannot speak highly enough about this piece of serenity. The staff was just so kind and welcoming. They treated us as though they had always known us! We expected some kind of basic breakfast since it is included and we were delightfully surprised with a chef created unique breakfast every day. I would go back here in a minute!!
- Leonardo (8/5): Beautiful hotel but don't book tours with them - The hotel is beautiful. The restaurant is not cheap but very good and the vibe is great - very relaxing, not many guests and the staff are really personable.
They also have a private beach which is really close and nice. It would be great if the opening times were better (10am-6pm at the moment) as we would have liked to use the facilities earlier in the morning and later at night.
However, our shower had a few issues and the water kept getting cold. We raised this and they sent someone to check it the day after but that did not solve the issue unfortunately.
The only thing we were really disappointed about was that when we booked a tour to Cabo Catoche which included fishing, snorkelling, etc. the hotel told us the agency charged 1,400 pesos ahead, but when we were on the tour, the other guests (from different hotels) told us they had paid 1,000, which did not seem fair at all. I recommend not booking through Punta Caliza for this but going to agencies in the centre of town.
The breakfast was very good but the service was extremely slow.
- Skoorb (10/5): - Punta Caliza is an excellent little hotel, great value for the money! I’m really glad my introduction to Holbox was through the eyes of Caliza. The breakfasts (included) were tasty, the room was comfortable and spacious, the private plunge pool was amazing and the interconnected hotel pool was a joy! I loved sitting in the hammock and watching the birds swoop in for late afternoon baths. Private beach section was very picturesque, we will definitely come back to this place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing intimate hotel. Very private. Very friendly. Gorgeous island. Would go back.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing set up. Design and comfort. Has to be seen. Rooms are rustic and sensible, with direct access to pool. Even enjoyed the brief walk to the beach. Would stay again.
- David (6/5): Style over substance, sadly - There’s no denying this place is stunning. The architecture and design of the rooms around the pool is really special, but once you’ve taken those Insta shots, we found the rest to be lacking any soul.
On check-in, there were zero island suggestions or details about the hotel (we later found out through fellow guests that there was an option to have dinner on top of the hotel’s lookout tower - would have been nice to know!); on hiring bikes we were given no recommendations of where to explore, and the bikes are in awful condition; on asking for directions to the pharmacy when my partner got ill, no one asked how she was or even if she felt better the next day; and on check-out, no one even asked how our stay had been - which is where we would have preferred to leave these comments.
On the positives, the breakfasts were great and the guys serving them were lovely; the designated sunbeds on the beach were super comfy (although the mattresses aren’t put out till 10, which is a bit of a wait as breakfast’s served at 8); and the two house dogs are awesome!
All in all, we just felt for a small, family run hotel it didn’t feel overly welcoming, and while all the staff were smiley, the hospitality and warmth just wasn’t there.
[For context, we’re a 30 year old couple from East London who both work in creative industries - and go on holiday a lot.]
- Verified traveler (8/5): (Mostly) Wonderful! - Overall we had a wonderful stay. The hotel itself is minimal and beautiful and serves the most perfect mezcal margaritas. Holbox is a beautiful spot, perfect for getting away and relaxing.
There were a couple of minor things that were lacking on the service side: we were, at times, a bit confused about meal schedules/availability, where the hotel's beach area was located, there was no bottle opener to open the water in the room, there was no way to contact anyone for help if you didn't happen upon someone...relatively small things, but they did play into our overall experience. We still had an awesome getaway and would recommend a stay at Punta Caliza—there's just definitely room for improvement.
**Don't forget your bug spray around dusk!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff were outstanding. The food was great. Anything we asked for we got. Amazing people.
- Lauren (10/5): Perfect Hotel - We stayed at the hotel for two nights and were extremely impressed by the service, cleanliness and staff. In particular, Alan was welcoming and diligent and went above and beyond during our stay. The hotel is immaculately clean and the breakfast is incredible. I would without a doubt recommend this hotel to anyone.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I enjoyed my stay here. The room was spacious, and the bathroom was terrific - amazing shower. The hotel is beautifully designed and is in a great location. though there are a few amenities missing from the room (hotel slippers, bathrobe, etc), it is a really lovely space. Staff is very attentive and the food is very good.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The family atmosphere. It's like spending time with relatives whose company you enjoy!
- Verified traveler (10/5): First Rate Boutique Property - I’m certain this is the most unique property on the island. The service is amazing, the boutique hotel is gorgeous and the breakfast was better than 99% of any we’ve ever had. The only flaw is that the entire place is constructed of wood(double height ceilings) and concrete, so you can hear through the walls. Both the toilet and the shower are open air, and opposite rooms face each other, which makes things worse. If you require quiet, this may not be the best option. If you’re easy going about noise, no problem. Everything else about this property is first rate.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Better than we could have imagined! Absolutely gorgeous family-owned
- Isaac (10/5): - Great hotel and people are always glad to help. Breakfast is amazing
- Philipp (10/5): Amazing experience in beautiful boutique hotel - My stay at Punta Caliza was simply outstanding. The design of the hotel is gorgeous, contemporary yet includes classic Mexican elements. The facilities are very clean and the rooms, mostly
made out of cedar wood, are extremely comfortable and cozy. Each room is equipped with a small private pool and additionally has direct access to the magically turquoise main pool. Alternatively, one can also make use of the serviced private beach area only a few meters away from the hotel. The owner family, who are managing the day to day business, were lovely, very helpful and put the utmost effort in facilitating a pleasant stay of their guests - you simply feel like home. I had an awesome time, received a lot of valuable recommendations of places to go, learned a lot about the Mexican culture as well as about their food and drinks (the margaritas are delicious) and had a tasting of the hotel’s broad Mezcal assortment! Overall 5 out of 5 stars!
- Barton (10/5): You gotta go - Beautiful hotel close to beach. Hotel has private beach area with a small bar with drinks, hammocks, shaded area, and lounge chairs.
Staff at hotel is wonderful and always helpful and cheerful.
Breakfast is included and always different. They also would make special order if requested.
You really should climb up the steps to their private overvation tower where views of the ocean and the island are amazing as is the entire hotel.
Rooms are very large and well appointed.
Each room has TV, private bath, private outdoor pool that is connected to main pool though private wooden doors that one can open.
The common area has hammocks, tables, games, wifi, bar.
They also have bikes to use on the island. They were a little rusty but being on the beach in salt water that's expected.
- Rachel (10/5): - We stayed here on our honeymoon and it could not have been a better stay! The accommodation itself is a work of art, and the private and shared pools are beautiful. The bed was huge and super comfortable, breakfast was delicious with local Mexican cuisine and the staff are incredibly friendly. It's run by a family from Tabasco and we felt so well looked after for our entire stay - Claudia, Cuauhtémoc and Alexa at the front desk are such wonderful people and so is Daniel who works at the beach bar. We honestly could not have asked for a more fantastic place to spend our honeymoon and would highly recommend it. If you have time make sure you do the whale shark tour - Wow!! Thank you so much!
- Carrie (10/5): - This property and location is fantastic. I've been traveling to Mexico for 20+ years, and Isla Holbox did not disappoint. Punta caliza is such a unique property, and unlike any 'hotel' I've ever stayed in. It's very quaint, and the staff does above and beyond to make you feel right at home. I truly loved everything about this trip. I hope to return in the near future. Gracias for an experience I'll never forget!!
- Ruth (10/5): Amazing boutique hotel! Five star service! - Punta Caliza is one of the most unique designs I have seen in a while. The hotel is beautifully designed. The rooms are minimalist and elegant. My room had a plunge pool, with another door leading into the main pool. There’s a beach spot with loungers reserved for Hotel guests within a 5 min walk. The boutique hotel is family run, with great service and attention to detail. I had an unfortunate event happen while in Holbox (outside of the hotel), and the hotel owners went above and beyond to provide me assistance and kindness. 5 Star treatment all the way. I would highly recommend!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent!! Every thing was great... coming back soon!!
- Robby (10/5): - I couldn’t believe that this little paradise existed until I experienced myself! Truly a price of art, architecture, and serenity. A wonderful staff and a one option breakfast that beats any restaurant. I shall be going back year after year! Thanks!
- Adam (10/5): Best Hotel on Holbox - Stunning hotel in the perfect location. Walking distance to everything - main square, restaurants, bars. Beautiful private beach area. Fantastic personal service and experience. Saw some other hotels nearby during our trip and couldn’t recommend Punta Caliza enough - definitely the best hotel on Holbox. Will return.
