- Yasmina (10/5): A beautiful property in a great location with multiple facilities - The pictures of the property truly didn’t do it justice, it was even more beautiful in person, with great facilities. The location is perfect, near the station and not far from the Nishiki market but distant enough that there’s peace and quiet during the night.
A big mention that the host was so lovely and I can’t thank them enough for being so accommodating to us and communicating consistently before and during our stay. It made staying in Kyoto for our first time even more special!
- Claudia (10/5): Great stay in a traditional house - Check-in and check-out was very smooth & the location is great. We really enjoyed our stay at this property and we were happy to experience to stay in a traditional house. The facilities were great. Would be great to have a space downstairs to hang the jackets.
- niall (10/5): - Everything was perfectly clean and just as picturesque as it shows in the advert and location was perfect for wandering into the gion district or 10 minute walk to the train station for day out to Nara
- Julia (9/5): - Excellent location in the heart of Gion district
Authentic Japanese house experience - feels like staying in a local home
Fully equipped kitchen with everything you need Uncomfortable checkout experience - knocking on the door at 10:01 AM on checkout day. I was already putting my shoes on to leave and felt very rushed and uncomfortable.
Bathtub didn't look clean - visible marks/stains
No sound insulation - very thin walls, you can hear street noise clearly. Light sleepers should be aware of this.
Overall:
Despite some minor imperfections, we have great memories of our stay. The authentic experience of living in a traditional Japanese house in Gion was truly special.
I recommend this place if you want to feel like a local and experience genuine Japanese living rather than staying in a standard hotel. Just be prepared for the thin walls and street noise - it's part of the authentic experience!

- Tamsin (10/5): Perfect! Host provided relevant information in plenty of time. Would stay here again in a heartbeat. - Property was absolutely beautiful. More space than a hotel room which allowed us to enjoy some relaxation time after super busy days enjoying all that Kyoto has to offer. The location also couldn’t have been any better. Would have been great for our party of 4 if there had been a 2nd shower room.
For those with young children or mobility challenges - the stairs were very steep. Not an issue for us, but a consideration for others am sure
- Melissa (10/5): Amazing part of our trip, very relaxing and amazing central location for everything. - Beautiful property and amazing location. Owners were extremely helpful too It was a bit tight for 6 people but seems the norm in the heart of Kyoto!
- Ruth (8/5): Very good - Excellent location for exploring Gion. House was warm. Owner was very quick at replying to emails and very helpful. Appreciated the offers of luggage storage before and after check in/out. House was unique and lots of care taken to prepare it. Beds and futons very comfortable. For 5 people, we were short of drinking glasses and bowls. Self catering was a little difficult.
- Dixie (10/5): Beautiful, relaxing home! - This was such a wonderful part of our time in Japan. The home was stunning and well maintained. Would absolutely (happily) stay here again.
It is close to some of the major sites, or within 15 minute walk to a major rail station.
- Yuting (10/5): Exceptional -
- Khuong (10/5): Everything is perfect. - It is exactly like the image. Everything was tidy and clean. The host was responsive and helpful… This is the place which I would recommend to everyone and definitely want to go back. I think it would be better if some bath bombs are provided as complimentary amenities because there is a great bath tube.
- Jozhua (10/5): Exceptional - Location and feel of the machiya. Short walk from nearest bus stop. Medium walk from nearest subway station.
- Laurent (10/5): Exceptional - Traditional house in perfect quiet location close to the main sights
- Shomer (9/5): Superb - A beautiful house, traditional style though well equipped with modern appliances. You have everything you need. The place is very quiet and just a few minutes walk from the centre.
- Stephen (10/5): Comfortable accommodation in an amazing, quiet location - The location is amazing. Very close to loads of attractions, restaurants and with a supermarket 3 minutes walk away. And yet very quiet. 15 minutes walk from the nearest subway station.
The host is incredibly helpful with great communication.
We were here 6 nights and had a mid stay clean - this was a very useful (included) service and the accommodation was spotless. It was a bit light in the bedroom at night (light from the hallway). Bedside tables would be a useful addition.
- Carlos (9/5): Gorgeous, calming, best for adults - A beautiful property with wonderful bathroom facilities and a gorgeous garden scene overlooking the living room space. We would have appreciated more pillows and a space (i.e. drawers or shelves) to put our clothing/belongings but otherwise the stay was perfect. The property needs access to more pillows. The property could use shelves or drawers for customers wishing to lay out their clothes or belongings.
- Steve (10/5): Exceptional place to stay, would easily stay longer with great modern amenities - Excellent location close to Temples and restaurants, modern facilities, heated floors and ample space with two bathrooms. Car parking close by. Tricky to find without GPS
- Alleynian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dakota (10/5): - Amazing spot, if you are able to stay here would highly recommend it.
- Dawn (9/5): Tomomi the host was very helpful with recommendations and arranging taxis and very prompt with her replies - Excellent location
- Andrew (10/5): Beautiful Machiya Townhouse Stay - Check-in process was smooth and easy. The owner was prompt with their communication and professional.
The accommodation is a beautiful combination of authentic and modern, included is a beautiful bath with small interior private garden. Everything was as advertised and our whole party enjoyed our stay!
The location is in a great spot in the Gion District which makes it easy to visit nearby temples early and beat the traffic. There are great restaurants nearby and more of the city centre is within walking distance. The only issue we had was the internet speed which was on the slower side. However, we rarely used due to travel but this could certainly be improved.
- Barry (10/5): - This was hands down the best place ive stayed on the planet earth
- Amanda (10/5): Beautiful accomodation in a great location of Kyoto. - Great location in a quiet back street of Kyoto. Beautifully restored Machiya with a comfortable living area. Walking distance to Yasaka pagodo, Gion, nishiki markets and Pontocho Luggage had to be kept downstairs in the living area, made the small space more cramped with 6 suitcases. Could also do with some hooks in the entry area for hanging jackets, scarves, hats.
- Kheng (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marina (9/5): Incredibly property in the best location! - Beautifully renovated traditional house in an excellent location surrounded by shrines and historical charm; the amount of space you get compared is incredible! The property came with all modern luxuries, the kitchen is equipped superbly, heated floors throughout the property including bathroom! The host, Tomomi, was very helpful, friendly and accomodating, we were very impressed with the excellent service and communication! I don’t recommend using the washing machine if you are relying on it’s drying function - it doesn’t dry well (we ran two drying cycles). Clothes came out smelly as well (probably due to bacteria in the stagnant water).
- Nigel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Norris (9/5): Superb -
- Marion (10/5): The real Kyoto living. - The bathtub is fabulous! Hard to have to keep all luggage downstairs when rooms are upstairs.
- Hao Lyn (10/5): - Location is great. Only 10-15 minutes walk to Kiyomizu-dera and Gion. The house is very cute. Very roomy compare to hotel room. Had an issue with upstairs AC unit. Customer service returned my email very quickly to guide me through. It was an user issue 😂. Washer and dryer is all in one unit. We had hard time drying our cloth. But I think the trick is to leave the door to the unit open so machine could have better air circulation. Other than that, we had a great time staying at this property.
- Leana (10/5): Lovely restored machiya with an amazing Onsen, right next to Gion - Amazing historic property near Gion. I can’t imagine getting something better for the rate we have paid. Very clean, beds are super comfortable, nice Onsen in a restored machiya. Excellent communication with the owner, who always responded to my inquiries within minutes. What more can you ask for? I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Book this one! A very minor complaint, but a few hooks (for hanging coats) at the entrance would be nice. Also, this isn’t really a negative, but the property isn’t likely a good fit for families with very small children. The stairs are a bit steep, which is typical for a machiya. Our son is 12, so it wasn’t an issue for us, but I I would be nervous if he was younger.
- Samantha (9/5): Superb -
- Joanne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ben (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rei (10/5): - We had a pleasure staying at Reikaku. The house offers authentic machiya and modern mix vibes. We had a trouble using electric stove but the owner responded right away and able to figure out. Very helpful! Also the location is perfect! Just a block away from all tourist sites and our favorite Arabica coffee shop! We walked to Gion couple times with a stroller and it was very convenient for us.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The place is conbeniently located near Gion. It is quiet, very clean, and new in appearance. We slept on 2 beds and 2 futons. Lighting, toilet are high tech and wifi is superfast. Tomomi is a great host. I would recommend Wechat app to communicate with her if need be. 7/11 nearby for international ATM and quick takeouts. Highly recommend cafe Naty for breakfast (opens at 7am) and cafe garcon for crepes within 5 min walking distance.
